I did not buy my car here but it is a great place to look around and get a feel for what you may be interested in. The lot is big and crammed with just about any kind of car, truck, or SUV. The cool thing is they are all unlocked so you are free to climb in and out and get up close and personal. I was able to sit in a few different cars and SUVs and quickly cross of my list the ones I didn't like once I was actually sitting in them, which would've taken a lot longer if I'd had to visit different dealers. The sales people leave you all alone while you browse, which is awesome. The cars seemed to be priced on the high side but you don't see any of the scratches, dents, and dings that are common in small used car lots. Most seem to be in great condition though a few that I sat in still had strong smoke odors. I just came to browse so I'm not sure if there is any flexibility in the "no haggle price." The website also notes that they'll transfer almost any car from another CarMax location free of charge without any commitment to purchase it so that may be worth checking out if you have something very specific in mind. read more

I popped a tire and my rim was bent so I went to the service center to have it replaced and they told me they'd have to order it (no bid deal) the guy who helped me said he'd call me back in a few minutes to let me know how long it would be before it came in..a week goes by and no phone call. So I call back and they told me it's there and he would call me back in a few minutes to tell me when to come in..that was an hour ago. I needed a new to me car. I asked a trusted mechanic if he would look over a car if I found one. He said he would, but if I went to Carmax he wouldn't need to. He told me all the cars from there were in guaranteed excellent condition and that he had bought and sold several through them. A high recommendation! No pressure car buying experience 1st ever. We were in the market for a convertible. Found carmax had several convertibles. But not at my local carmax. (Figures right). Well I made a phone call spoke with a sales agent in Frederick Maryland my local carmax dealer come to find out he could have the car transported to Frederick. On the same phone conversation I was approved for a car loan. So one phone call loan approved, car put on hold for me and transported to my local dealer great for me Why 4 Star you ask? There was one issue with the car I pointed out. They will fix but I had to make an appointment with service to evaluate then do a follow up appoint if it needed parts. I was deeply disappointed that it couldn't be evaluated right away. I have the work order for the free repair. It's just the hassle to go back for something in my opinion could of be handled before I left the lot. Would I recommend and buy my next car from CarMax ABSOLUTELY. read more

The worst experience ever!! I bought 2014 Cadillac CTS Coupe. 32K miles. 3.6 AWD. $23899. I went to an independent shop to price custom exhaust. After the master mechanic put it up on the lift he asked to review some concerns. Rust everywhere, front axle slinging grease, power steering pump leaking, rear brake badly worn. How did CarMax pass MD state inspection? They do there own, that's how. They are a ripoff. 4 Pinch points on the body where someone tried to lift the car by the body and not the frame. 3 drill holes in the fender with a dent. The car had only 32K miles on it and they where charging me almost 24K. Buyer beware, this car was sold back to CarMax and is for sale again, for more money! read more

If I could give this garbage establishment 0 stars I would. We (my brother and I) have been getting the run around for over a week now. We were approved for the car on the first day, but for some reason they had to run credit 3 times for the same application!! Ashu was worthless in the process as well. He was doing nothing but giving us attitude and being unhelpful. My brother lives with my dad. All the utilities are in dad's name but they keep asking for proof of residence. We had his name added to the Comcast account and they STILL wouldn't take it because it also showed my dad's name. OF COURSE IT DOES! THEY BOTH LIVE THERE! I would rather walk to work than have to deal with an establishment so shady and unorganized. Save yourself the trouble and go somewhere else!! read more

I truly am not sure what to say about CarMax anymore this is my second time buying from them. The Salesperson and process to buying the car was great but the overall feeling just doesn't do it for me. Originally, the costs are based on a 4% credit rating... I just don't know who has that kind of credit rating and would buy a used car. I do have a excellent credit rating, but with CarMax auto financing they gave me a 7.5%....???? The oil hadn't been changed in a year, as was the sticker on the windshield when I drove it, but when I purchased it, the sticker was removed and thrown to the side???? I love the car I bought and I haven't made a payment on it yet. Today I received a email from the DMV telling the car is due for its emissions test.... Really! Just makes me question what is Carmax's true ethics policy. read more

Great experience with Brian Chanin as my sales rep! The process of transferring my new car from PA to MD was seamless and easy.

I grew up in the car business. I know how car dealerships work, how they make their money, how they like to squeeze every dime out of you that they possibly can. Carmax in Frederick is unlike any car dealership I've ever seen. I looked at their stock online, and picked out the perfect car for me. The make and model I wanted, a mileage that was good, a color I liked, and a price I could afford. I put a hold on the car, and later that day, Steve Valentino reached out to me about setting up a time to see the car. When I touched base with him about setting up the time, and let him know what I was looking for and my potential hurdles with an insurance payout, he worked with me to set up a time. He got me pricing down to the penny so I would know how much to take out for a loan, he helped me come up with a Plan B if my bank took too long to process my application. Basically all of the heavy lifting was done before I even got into the dealership. When I finally got to Carmax to actually purchase the car, Steve was there ready to greet me and get the process started on buying the car. He answered every question, didn't try to pressure me to look at a more expensive car, or add any additional features. I knew exactly what I wanted and he was there to help me. Overall with Steve, a fantastic experience. When it came time for signing the paperwork, Claryse was cheerful and happy, even though it was nearing the end of the day and about time to close up. She answered every question and kept a conversation going so we didn't notice how much time was passing, and how much our hands were starting to hurt with all of the necessary signatures. When we finally left Carmax with our new (used) car, I was in a great mood. I was happy to be driving my car, and amazed at how painless the process was. I know how dealerships work, and make money. Carmax is no ordinary dealership, and I'm completely rethinking everything I've ever learned about the car business. When it comes time to buy our next car, we will be going to Carmax, without a doubt. read more

Overall, it was a mixed-bag experience but good if you weigh everything. To be honest, I did not have high expectations for Carmax prior to visiting. I thought it was the Wal-Mart of car dealerships so you can understand my reluctance. Nevertheless, I was very pleasantly surprised by the facility and the staff. In all, the customer service is spectacular! Our salesman was good and their were many cars to choose from, so he made that process about as painless as possible. The one downfall we did experience is with their financing services. After we decided on the car we wanted, we went through the laborious financing process and received very poor offers considering my excellent credit score. To make a long story short, ironically enough Carmax financial services was able to give me the best (although very poor) offer but given I had 3 days to best this offer I just accepted it. 2 days later I exchanged the poor 6.95% offer through Carmax with a 2.99% at PNC. That is quite a difference. Something just didn't seem transparent about that process (although that's one of their pitches). Later we had to deal with the services department, and I can say absolutely nothing bad about that staff. Arguably the best service department I've had the experience to work with. Sold me a lemon and a useless extended warranty. 2 months after purchase we brought it to carmax for a faulty tire sensor. That is when they tell me that the car is still under factory warranty. So the extended warranty they pressured me into buying was totally not needed. So after wasting a day at carmax I then had to make an appointment at the dealership. So that gets fixed. 2 months later the car breaks down while we are on a trip. Towed to the dealership for a bad starter motor. Come to find out while it is there, there are 5 open recalls on the car that were never addressed. So we get the starter fixed and as soon as we get home take it to have all the recalls addressed. 1 month later the rear camera fails, back to the dealership. During that visit we also have them do an oil and filters change. 10 days later my car stops/dies on 15 north going 60miles an hour!!! Towed to the dealership...."catastrophic engine failure"!!! So a car I have had for less than 9 months has been in the shop 5 times and needed a totally new engine!!! Thank god Hyundai has a good warranty because Carmax took my money and washed their hands of me and the lemon they sold me!!! Nice job carmax.....you suck!!! Update- Car is headed back to the shop Monday....squealing noises when it accelerates. Wonder what will be wrong this time. Oh yea I forgot to mention. There was also a nail in the tire that Carmax failed to notice when the examined the tire sensor. read more

Went to get an apprasial on my 2013 Hyundai Elantra on a Sunday morning without an appointment. The staff was able to give me an offer in 15 minutes after taking a look at the car. They said the offer was good for 7 days so I went around to see if anyone could get me a better offer. Carmax was the highest one. I went back the next day with the offer and in under 30 minutes I had filled out the paper work to sell my car. I was amazed at how quick and efficient the process was. The whole time I was helped by several friendly staff who seemed willing to help answer any questions. I highly recommend! read more

After 15 minutes of watching 4 sales associates sitting at their desks talking to one another I had enough. Two stars because I understand it was late on a Saturday night and it's possible they were not all sales associates. Still, just a poor experience. read more

My parents bought a vehicle from this dealership May 29 2017 this is July 29 and still fighting with them to get a check to get the taxes and tags paid for in Pennsylvania. The customer service has just given us the response of we will see what we can do and blow it off. Now come here in person to handle it and the manager says he can't do anything on a Saturday. Are you kidding me you guys have had 2 months to handle this and haven't done anything. Absolutely will never buy a vehicle here ever again and don't recommend them for anyone else to either. First time in for service here at carmax. Was told the wait for a state inspection would take about an hour to which I decided I would wait instead of catching an Uber downtown. A hour later I kindly asked if the service would be done soon, to which the she responded with another hour of wait time! Chuckling "it normally takes about an hour and a half to 2 hours" proper communication is the key to good customer service and this location does not seem to have that. read more

I have to say that I am not very happy with the experience I had with carmax! I had purchased a car on June 23rd and that experience went well, at least I thought. Then I got a call on July 5th asking me to go back in. A mistake was made on the paperwork and I had to go back and return the car and buy it again. It was a huge inconvenience! So I left there thinking I hope I do not hear from them again! Well I got a call this evening about the car again. Apparently when I repurchased the car I should have gotten another set of tags. Since I am currently on vacation they agreed to go ahead and mail me the new tags and send a postage paid return envelope to send the others back. I have to say I love the car but not all the crap that has come along with it and no additional consideration given to me. I feel that when I had to repurchase, they could have at least filled it up with gas and washed it while I had to go through the whole procurement of the vehicle for a second time. read more
