I heard a lot of good things about carmax and went to go look at cars after looking at their website for a few weeks. I put a hold on a car and a man called me to set up an appointment for an appraisal but did not return my calls for the following days and was not there when I arrived. Richard ended up helping me out. My old car was appraised while I went out on a test drive. We came back in to talk numbers and financing to see what I could afford. Richard was very knowledgeable and personable. He did his best to make sure my mother and I understood the process and and he answered all the questions we had. He was able to explain the maintenance plan as well as another insurance option to me and allowed me to make my own decisions without pressure. It is a very open process where you can feel in control. A woman named Maureen helped me with my paperwork well past closing and she took her time as well, never making me feel rushed or as if I could not ask questions. My new car is perfect and all I could have asked for. The whole process including test driving took about 3 hours which to me is very efficient for this big of a purchase. Definitely worth giving a try if you are looking to buy a car, I found it to be a much more comfortable place to shop than many of the other nearby dealerships. I absolutely recommend not going to Car Max. 2 major things I have come across car max. 2 and a half months ago, I purchased a 2017 Mercedes Gla, Frank was great, everyone was friendly however he did not disclose that registration is only good for 75 days. Frank told me to not worry about registration, we will cover it. Mind you the registration wasn't paid for 3 years, it still had 2017 tags and it is 2020. Went their yesterday, Frank was not there. I ended up talking with at least 3 different people until the manager finally came out which took her forever to come out. I didn't have this car for at least 3 months or 6 or a year. They couldn't at least pay half?? I was furious. We drove next door to Acura bc as of now, I don't want to do business with Car max. I don't want to help make them money. Acura serramonte did a quote on my car and pulled the Car Fax on the Benz. There was a report of an accident and damage on the front of the car. CAR MAX GAVE ME A REPORT THAT STATED NO DAMAGES REPORTED. now I'm heated, can I sue car max? No because I signed the contract stating I will take the car as is. Bottom line is, Car max need to disclose when registration works and PULL A CAR FAX. They pulled a phoney report called AUTO REPORT THROUGH EXPERIAN. Manager at Acura didn't even know what that was. VERY UPSET WITH CAR MAX. Never want to do business with them. CROOKS. Ask for CAR FAX before purchasing a car or take your business elsewhere!!!!! So many workers, still some people had to wait! I could write a long review about how patient Frank Demasi was in helping us with our car purchases. One being a Jeep Wrangler, and the other a BMW. That's fine, then they told me they will call Saturday and get back to me, there is no call back from Carmax, I called and they said oh the lease company is not open. I am like?! you should have told me that and not kept me waiting whole day for doing nothing just for the call. I asked if I could leave my car in the parking lot and they said they are not reliable for it which I understand. However, they never offered me an overnight sheet to fill in until I called Carmax today to ask! Now they told me Monday. The service is upsetting customers. On April 15, my sister, my boyfriend and I went to CarMax to look for possible options for a new car for my sister. She was considering a Mazda or a Lexus. We did not test drive that day so we went back on April 16 around 5:30pm. We got put on a list and then Timothy approached us. We could tell he was in a bad mood already. We asked to test drive the Mazda, cool we did it. When we went back to Timothy to return the keys we excitedly ask to test drive the Lexus so my sister could make up her mind. Timothy answered "well you guys are already reaching the limit of two. I mean are you really going to buy a car today?" we were shocked and didn't know what to say. As he was processing the information he rudely said "If you don't mind I have to sell cars to make money" My sister felt uncomfortable and asked to leave but I told her that we should just test drive it and not buy from him. When we came back we let him know we were going to pass and he sighed and said "yeah I figured" We let him know that he should not be treating customers in such way. This Carmax is run by young people who do not believe in working extra. Came here to sell my car but because I came an hour before they closed they refused to appraise it and work with me. Claiming they had families to get home to. Ridiculous. Anyone car business will stay open as long as needed if a sale is being made. All the employees were just walking around killing time. Waiting for that time to hit 7pm so they can go home. I understand that business have operating hours but when working in sales units have to move regardless. SELLERS BEWARE! This is the second car I've sold to car max and had zero issues the first time. The check I received for my first car (different location) I was able to cash no problem the SAME DAY. The checks they apparently give you now are not cashable checks. Wells Fargo (their check issuer) will not cash them, EVEN IF YOU BANK WITH THEM. Be aware you will have to deposit the check and wait 7-10 days depending on your bank before you actually can see the money from selling your car. Had this been mentioned to me, I wouldn't have been as upset. The fact that they don't tell you is very wrong and sneaky. When I called and spoke to the manager for the finance department she was extremely rude and has a bad attitude. Without explicitly saying it she basically told me to go f myself there's nothing they can do. I will no longer do business with CarMax based of my interaction with her alone. Didn't know what to expect coming here especially with COVID-19 guidelines but I knew I wanted to sell my car since it was sitting in the garage for months. I debated between selling my car privately or through a service like Carmax. I decided to get an appointment online for an appraisal which was incredibly easy. At my appointment, I checked in at the front desk. They had everything setup for social distancing and had hand sanitizers and masks out front. They told me to wait outside for an appraisal. I waited a few minutes and two staff members came out, both were super helpful. Shoutout to Juan and Tim for the quick and easy process. Both were extremely nice and to my surprise, I received a really good offer after 20-35 minutes. Literally had to come back THREE times to finally get all the information I needed to sell my car. For some reason they couldn't tell me this information the first time I visited. First time was for an appraisal and that was done so I came back the next time to sell it, then they told me there was a payoff letter I needed to get from my loan company. Came in for an appraisal for my car - AVOID AT ALL COSTS. The "certified" mechanic, Valter S. is a clown and looks like a kid trying to pay off his Wyotech tuition. Absolutely has very limited knowledge, don't bother with them (mainly Valter) for appraisals. If you do have Valter appraise your car, take your car and run to a dealership, you will 100% receive a better trade in deal. However, if you do want to buy a car, look for Frank. He's a friendly guy and will cater his customers' needs. If it wasn't for Frank, this review would've been an easy 1 star. read more

I don't remember when was the last time I wrote a review but I work in luxury retail as a manager and realised that lately people only love to leave bad reviews and forget to share the good stuff, sooo I wanted to give a huge shoutout to these two gentlemen who made my experience at CarMax so smooth and easy! I found out online that you could reserve your car for viewing through the app and that's exactly what I did. I was pleased that I had one of the sales representatives (SR) calling me to confirm the viewing probably in 30 min after I scheduled an appointment, he also emailed which worked for me best. Next day we came at the scheduled time and Frank, our SR, met us and started showing us the cars. He was knowledgeable, not pushy (we mentioned our budget) and fun to work with. He also was training one of the new SR and did a great job doing it! We drove 2 cars and looked at probably 3 more, we ended up purchasing 2017 Hyundai Elantra and were super happy with it! Less then 30 days of driving a car our battery died, it was when the COVID19 already got into the Bay Area and we had mandatory "shelter in place" and all the Car Max dealerships were closed. As Frank recommended to get an Road assistances through CarMax we called to get a jump, they were super easy over the phone and came in 15 min. On the other hand we had to pay $70 for this service.. everything would be totally perfect until our battery died again next day when I was on a run for groceries with my parents. We had to call again. Next day we were going to take our newborn to the doctors and the car didn't start again.. As I mentioned, all CarMax dealerships are still currently closed because of COVID and they hang up on you at the end of the call.. Gladly!! Frank gave me his business card and I decided to give a shot and call him (it was Friday). I explain everything, he was super pleasant, understanding and gave me several options to fix my issue in a timely manner. Maybe 20 minutes after I talked to Frank, his manager EJ called and said he will try to find a car repair center THE SAME DAY to fix/replace the battery. Mind you almost everything is closed now because of the shelter in place. Long story short.. EJ sent a tow truck from the car repair to get our car, they replaced the battery, he order us Lyft to drive us and pick up the car, all that was done in 3 hours. Yes, it was super frustrating to even deal with as we bought a car less then 30 days ago, had to pay and get a jump 2 times. But! I want to say that Frank was super helpful and nice to even pick up the phone during this time and connect with his manager. And his manager did a fantastic job in such a short time to help us fix the car and was super easy to work with. Thank you for fixing this problem and finding the resolution so fast! read more

Horrible customer service. There was no one to help me. So, I saw a car on the website at carmax.com And decided to go in to see the car in person. When I went to the lot showed the sales consultants the car I wanted to see. And he asked me, did I have an appointment or did I put the car on hold as it was not available. He then told me that I could go out on the lot and look at a few cars. If I saw a car I liked, I would have to scan their QR code to see if they were available and put one on hold. The majority of the cars on the lot were not available went I did find a car I liked a had to scan it on my phone and put it on hold, then it did not let me make an appointment until an hour later. When I went back in to find help, no one was available, yet I saw serval sales consultants just sitting around testing or talking to each other. I actually just went down the street to Volkswagen because I liked a Volkswagen on the lot. At Volkswagen, I got excellent service. Someone actually came out with me, looked at the cars, answered my questions, let me test drive the car. I ended up buying my car from them. While some people may like all this new technology of doing everything online. I'm old school, and I prefer being able to interact with a human and actually see the car in person before buying it. read more

I paid for their extended warranty, and my car still fall under the warranty. They don't want to pay for it. I am not sure what I am supposed to do with this vehicle if it is trashed. *Sales experience is stellar* If you plan to buy a car here and be done with CarMax, then this is a great place to search. No need to read on. My issues were related to service due to vehicle defects. *Service experience was surprisingly disappointing* If you plan on purchasing aftermarket warranty "MaxCare" offered by CarMax (which, despite the name and the sales affiliation, is not actually sold by a CarMax entity) please pay heed to the warnings offered by my experience. First, do not assume that simply because you're purchasing a used vehicle from CarMax, you're guaranteed a higher quality vehicle that is free from defects. It is a safe bet to say that you'll probably pay more than at the average used car dealer. I've purchased two late-model vehicles from CarMax, and both had quite a few issues that developed shortly after purchase. For that reason, I thought it to be more prudent to opt for the MaxCare warranty on the latter purchase. The vehicle in question developed an issue where intermittently, the turnstalk/signal would stop functioning properly. At first, it would behave erratically. I brought it in to CarMax shortly after, thinking that I'd be covered either by the standard recent purchase warranty, or by the MaxCare warranty. They told me that because it was an intermittent issue, and not reproducible, that they'd need to see some kind of evidence. Fair enough, I thought, even though I reiterated that this was an intermittent problem. I asked if I should try to capture the problem on video. Yes, that would certainly help, they told me. Recently, the turnstalk would suddenly stop functioning altogether. Still an intermittent issue (happens every 20-50mi), but a horrifying one whenever it would happen. Meaning, I'd be on the freeway, suddenly could not control turn signals, and either be forced to make turns without signaling or stick my arm out the window at 70mph on the 101. On one occasion, I made a safe stop and captured the problem on video. I went back to CarMax and showed it to them. Bad news, they still could not reproduce it, and were not willing to accept my video evidence as sufficient reason to try to help solve the issue: https://youtu.be/CUwyibDuomQ Even worse, I was given a stern warning, that if I brought the car in again for that issue, that they would start charging me, as if I were making random or frivolous claims (out of pleasure?) Anyways, I realized immediately that the problem was that these guys were simply out of their depth and didn't want to look at it. It wasn't even a problem with MaxCare, who honored the repair when I brought it to an independent shop nearby. They did a quick code scan, noticed that the turnstalk component was throwing up errors, and replaced it. No problems since. Props to Miko at CarMax for always being diligent and serving as a friendly point of contact. Props to G-F automotive for actually fixing the problem. The opposite of props to Jeff at CarMax for not only refusing to help, but threatening/reprimanding an otherwise loyal CM customer. read more

When they give you a detailed breakdown of costs, they list even the smallest details like "$9 tire disposal fee," and "$15 tile transfer," BUT THEY DON'T MENTION THAT, UNLIKE ALL OTHER DEALERSHIPS ON EARTH, THEY DON'T HANDLE THE DMV REGISTRAITON FOR YOU, NOR DO THEY MENTION THE $450 DMV REGISTRATION FEE YOU'LL HAVE TO PAY (AFTER STANDING IN LINE FOR 3 HRS) AT DMV. So when you're measuring their "all in" price, make sure you add $450ish for the DMV fee that's NOT included in their "all in" price but IS included at all other dealerships. Wow. read more

Buyer beware... the sticker of the BMW I purchased said it "may have a manufacturer's warranty" when I asked, the sales manager he said it was still covered by the manufacturer. However, when I took it to BMW the dealership told me it expired in May. When I called and asked to speak to the General Manager John Saddi. He told me that the car was inspected in September. You would think that they wouldn't put a balance of a manufacture warranty on the sticker when it's expired. If they really are that diligent, how would they miss that. Or maybe it's the misleading way they like to sell you the car He offered to do NOTHING to make it right. He also spoke with the person who sold me the car and they obviously denied it. He said there's nothing he can do. I would've paid less for this car without a warranty or wouldn't have purchased it. So shady. Typical used car salesman. Won't even let his boss call me. I wasn't sure whether or not I wanted to replace my car, and they didn't pressure me into anything before. They really do live up to their tagline: the way car buying should be. They audited my car in under 25 minutes and gave me an offer of $2k more than Kelly blue book estimated my car was worth. They let me look around the lot and didn't follow me or pressure me to get buy anything. All they told me was they're happy to help should I ever decide to purchase a car through them. It made the experience so much more pleasant. Once they gave me their offer, they gave me 7 days to decide whether or not I would take it. I took the offer. It was such a great place to buy and sell a car. First went in knowing I wanted an SUV with a third row, but when it was not being used wanted enough space to put a wheel chair and a walker in. Also told the sales rep that it couldn't be too high because my grandfather had to get in and out easily. He said he knew of three right off his head and he brought them up for me to look at and let my grandfather get in and out of them. Then I said I wanted to trade in my POS car for part of my payment for the SUV. I was shocked when they came back offering me as much as they did. I thought about selling it on Craiglist, but didn't really have the throughput to deal with making appointments with people, having them flake, the liability and pain of doing all the DMV paperwork, etc... Yesterday, I purchased a vehicle at carmax. I loved the vehicle and the value was great but the tires were bald. When I told the salesman he had them check and they said they were within legal limits. Barely.. When I got a little more vocal about it and asked for my keys back to my vehicle because I did not want to go through the sale, the salesman again asked the shop manager to look at them again, he was with an ear reach of me and told my salesman Antonio that he wasn't going to waste his time. Probably realizing that I heard what he said he then tried showing me the tire tread on a vehicle in the showroom to show me where they measured it. I asked him to show me on my car and he was very irritated. they went out and checked the tires again and found that one of them had a nail in it so I could not drive it home that day. I went through with purchasing the vehicle and will just replace the tires on my own but I will NEVER recommend or purchase another vehicle from CarMax in my life! He treated me like I was dumb and did not know what I was talking about probably because I'm a female. Probably thinking that I don't know what a bald tire actually looks like. As soon as I pick up my vehicle on Wednesday I will connect a picture to this review. I just wanted to let people know that CarMax tries to sell vehicles with unsafe tires. Carmax has probably been the smoothest and easiest way for me and my boyfriend purchasing our new family car. I initially requested the Toyota Highlander to be shipped to this location as it was originally in Roseville/Sacramento. Right after requesting for shipment, i received a call moments later to set up for financial informations. Less than 2 days our car was dropped off to serramonte. Made our appointment and was assisted with Dalia who was extremely helpful and kind. She made this experience not feel super uptight and was straight forward and honest with us which we truly appreciated! Our appointment was at 5pm and was assisted 10 mins early which was great. We were able to test drive the car for 20 mins, all while doing an appraisal on our current car. Which we managed to get a pretty good offer! After 3 hours our new car was all set and ready to take home! Dude gave me an offer that was $2k below the KBB value. Told me it was not negotiable. I thought it was a rip off and would have walked away if I had more time to be dealing with this. Very disappointed with the service here. Went online to get an offer on a vehicle for a recently deceased relative. I liked the offer they gave me so I called the business office and explained why the title holder couldn't be present. I was told to bring in my drivers license, title and registration for the vehicle and an original copy of the death certificate. Knowing this, I went ahead and booked an appointment to sell them the vehicle. The night before the appointment I contacted the business office again just to make sure I knew what paper work to bring. They told me my drivers license, title and registration of the vehicle and an original death certificate. They also asked me if it had been 40 days since the title holders death. I told them yes (Estate lawyer also told me I was able to sell the vehicle). The day of the appointment I take the 30 minute drive to their location. I check in and went to a desk to show them my offer code and drivers license. They took the keys of the vehicle to inspect. This took around 30 minutes. When the inspection was done they presented me with their offer which matched the offer given on-line. I was ready to sell and was instructed to go to the business window. I gave the guy at the desk the offer, my drivers license, the title and registration of the vehicle and the original death certificate. After a few minutes of waiting a lady from the office approached me and asked if the estate was in probate. I told her very sure it's not, if it was I think I would know. Then told her only thing I'm waiting for is for one person to sign a waiver of beneficiary. Thats when the whole deal fell apart. They refused to buy the vehicle. My biggest complaint is why couldn't have the question of is the estate in probate have been asked over the phone (remember, the answer was a no)? If I knew ahead of time the whole deal would've been off because of a person not signing a waiver of beneficiary, I wouldn't of wasted almost 3 hours of my time to go and sell them the car. I would hope their business office staff would be a little better about their knowledge of these situations. Be warned, the staff here might not know all the DMV laws. read more

I did a trade-in, and the new car was brought from Modesto. When I expressed interest, it was taken off line so no others could buy it. and I test drove it in Colma. The price I was offered on my trade was higher than Blue Book. Eric, the sales associate, and Gian, the paperwork guy, were helpful and patient. I have had the car about 45 days and have found no problems with it, although there is a 90-day warranty. Would I have done better financially at a traditional dealership? Maybe by a little, but I have no regrets about dealing with Carmax in Colma. It was the first time ever that I left a dealership with a purchased car that had a full tank of gas! I brought what I needed and they honored the quote they gave me online in its entirety. The people I interacted with were friendly, nice, and professional. Avoid this place at all cost! We purchased our family vehicle only to have several problems. They are very convincing to purchase the extended waRranty only for the waRranty not to Cover when you actually need it. Not because of the policy but bc the reps "feel" it's not necessary because we have 3K miles left on our waRranty. Our vehicle has been sitting at the body shop for almost 3 months bc waRranty does not want to approve transmission. We have not even drove the car, we purchased it right when Covid hit in March 2020. Sad times, they see a family with children and will smile in your face for purchase time, and not help when the assistance is needed for the waRranty they sell and customer purchased.
