Worse service experience than the DMV! Bought a car on Saturday, CarMax has a 30 day policy to fix anything for "free!" Within 24 hours there were minor issues, 2 noticed before leaving the lot. I scheduled an appointment for Wed of the next week to have these easy things fixed. CarMax Serramonte: * Didn't even look at my car until 1.5 hrs after my appointment was scheduled * Didn't have the parts ordered that I had a signed service order for saying they were ordered, in hand * Had me wait for 3+ hours to tell me that they'd need to keep my car overnight (offered a non-comparable loaner car) * Finally filled my tires with air, saying it would take 15 min, it took 30 then I was supposed to wait for a service order printout - after 30+ more minutes of waiting I left. Bottom line: Waited 4.5 hours only to have my tires filled with air and be told that the 4 parts I needed would have to be ordered even though I sent pictures of the items prior to the appointment: 1 broken exterior light, 1 broken interior light, 2 headrests missing, 1 headrest broken, plus tires needed air. Have had much more pleasant and quicker experiences at the DMV! read more

I'm not a huge Yelp reviewer, but the CarMax team deserves a big thumbs up. Last week my truck came up with a bad head gasket, and I had a race weekend coming up and a lot I needed my truck for between now and then. A friend referred me, and so I started browsing their trucks, finding a few in the greater area that might work. I spoke with Frank on the phone, and we decided on one of the trucks I had been looking at based on my pre-approval, then on the same call we went through the formal approval and he initiated the transfer of the truck, and said they would also take my old truck. Frank arranged for me to meet with his fellow associate, Bill, who met me late Saturday night and we did the appraisal on my old truck, test drove and looked at the 'new' truck, did all the paperwork, and even though we got out of there a good 30 minutes after they were closed, at no point did they try to rush or hurry things. The entire experience was terrific. I was already very stressed trying to arrange to get everything done after my truck died, and working with CarMax was absolutely painless. In addition, they gave me more for my old truck than I was expecting despite the issues! If/when I'm ever in the market for a used car again, I will definitely be back. Between the pain free financing, selection, fair prices, and their extended warranty, it makes buying a used car a million times better than it has ever been for me in the past! read more

Had an issue with my car pulling to the left. Car was covered on the limited warranty. My car was diagnosed quick and it was told that 3 of the 4 tires I had on were worn pretty badly and that may be the cause of the issue so they decided to replace all 4 with new tires! I was scared about buying a used car. I found CarMax online and they had the exact car I wanted at a good price. Karen was very helpful and explained the process to me. I have only purchased new cars before so I was not sure how it goes with used. Finance with CarMax was so much cheaper then my bank. The car I wanted was actually in the LA CarMax. They where able to ship it up for me. They have a 7 day no questions return policy. They give you a CarFax report. They due a extensive 125 point inspection and a 30 day warranty. Plus they will send you a Lyft to get you to the lot! Once I bought the cars, I found 2 minor issues that I was able to come back and they took care of it. read more

Make sure the driver seat has appropriate car mats when you leave; otherwise, you could end up almost running a stop sign because the fake crap one CarMax installed, doesn't have the hooky-do to prevent the mat from slipping underneath the brake pedal. T. J. is great!! He's chatty without over doing it, friendly, and professional. After the purchase, the car was washed but hardly "detailed." There are still dusty spots and the windshield wasn't wiped down. If you think about trading in your car, be prepared for the lowest KBB suggested price. read more

Yesterday I traded in my 2008 Nissan Sentra to purchase an upgraded one. Turns out after all the car wasn't as great as it seems. I was so aggravated to spent hours and so much time at carmax from 1-6pm, to turn around and drop the car back off to them. The car I had purchased and spent my my money on was 2013 Nissan Sentra fe+sv. For one I take part I messed up on was I didn't test drive the car, but It wasn't offered to me as well. I brought it back because when I left with it the car was jerking going on 40mph. I came back and they were trying to put me on a loaner car. They said that technicians briefly check cars and there was none and they all left early since it was Friday. They called my insurance to get full coverage plus collision on the loaner car but my insurance only covers for liability. Carmax policy is that I can't get a loaner car without full coverage. They didn't really do much for me I needed my car so I left with it since I have no money I needed to find my way to get to work the next day. I told them I'll bring it back once a technician came. So I left after I came back now the car has completely became a wreck. I was at a stop sign the car wasn't moving as fast 2 mph I had to put my hazards on before somebody crashed into me. Then I put it on park I noticed the ac was on but I never turned it on I tried to put it in drive and I Was REVERSING. Now carmax had to call towing truck and get me a lyft to work. I'm so mad and disappointed to put my trust my life In jeopardy from the worked and techs of carmax saying they 'briefly' checked it. Again I spent my money and time. Not SATISFIED AT ALL AND I STILL LEFT THE DEALERSHIP WITH NO CAR BUT THEY HAVE MY MONEY . They could've went way beyond there job duty and get me loaner car! I received horrible service at this CarMax location. There was miscommunication on their end and they tried to make it my problem. I was not treated fairly as they prioritized another customer who wasn't even there and had no legit claim to the car I was interested in over me, who was standing right in front of them ready to purchase the car. Their argument during the situation made absolutely no sense. I felt disrespected and was appalled at how I was treated. The manager offered no resolutions to the problem and was very arrogant. I was contacted days later to see if the customer service person could resolve any of the issues, but by then I had already found another vehicle elsewhere. I would save my time by not going to this location and instead go to one of the many dealerships that are on the same street and within walking distance. read more

They refuse to give you an online estimate of vehicle worth, force you to come to the dealership, don't honor your appointment, rude staff that give you attitude for showing up for the appointment, they are vague about wait time, and understaffed. I seldom write reviews but feel compelled to share my experience. After waiting almost 2 hours, my husband and I were given an insulting "non-negotiable" offer. We then went to Honda of Serramonte and within 20 minutes, had our car appraised, paperwork done and walked out with $2250 more than what CarMax offered. We didn't even have an appointment! It was a fair offer and the process was a breeze. I cannot comment on the CarMax buying experience but I will say that selling to them could be a huge mistake. Don't settle and get ripped off by a company that spends millions on advertising at your expense. I walk around their lot and they have a 2017 WRX with 16,000 miles for sale for a NO HAGGLE PRICE of $26, 998. So, I'm assuming mine would be out there for over $28K. I was greeted by Steven J. and had a very smooth and pleasant time. Service was awesome but what got me to write this was how cool and interactive Steven was. It sort of felt like I was talking to a long lost friend that I was excited to see again! Also the offer I received from the company far exceeded my expectations and I left with a smile. :) All in all I would come back here again if I had another car that I wanted to sell. And if there are any people looking to appraise their cars, I would definitely recommend this place. On November 28 we first contacted Carmax in order to place a hold on the car we found 2017 RAV4 Toyota. We were talking to the sales person named Tio. We were reassured that the car is placed under our name and we proceeded with purchasing it. we initiated the transfer to Danvers Massachusetts. Several days later we were ready to go and pick up our new vehicle but in the morning of the pick up day we received a text saying that our vehicle was sold to somebody else. Carmax explanation was that it was a glitch in the computer system which allowed us to buy the car while it was placed on hold for somebody else. The system continue to update us about the vehicle despite the fact that it was sold to somebody else Pier CarMax. Multiple phone calls later where we had to explain our story over and over again and couple of days later we were told that we have to choose another vehicle and no compensation would be provided for our inconvenience, Lost opportunities, and aggravation. So far it was an extremely unpleasant experience with luck of communication and absolute no desire to take responsibilities. We requested multiple times for our case to be escalated to upper management and received no response. Sincerely hoping that this case would be well investigate it and Carmax will provide us a great service with proper apologist going forward But would definitely not recommend this website to anybody else read more

I truly wish they had minus stars I would give this dealership a minus score. We found a car which we were told they would hold for 7 days. This was on Monday, they were going to check on shipping to Salt Lake City and call us back as we live in Idaho and could drive to Salt Lake City easier than to colma ca. When we did not hear from them by Friday we called the colma dealership and was told they sold the car. Wow what great customer service. For your sake please do not not go with this company they will screw you over. When we called their customer service we were told how sorry they were, and that they would let the powers that be know what happened. But get this, they never asked for the dealership or our name or address or the salesman that we dealt with, so you know what, you guessed it, nothing will be done about it. Please be careful. I recently purchased a car, a 2018 Kia. Let me first say the buying/delivery process was great and easy (of course $$$). I really liked the car when I first got it, however from the first week I started receiving msgs on the screen " battery discharge warning" and I def was planing on taking the car to inspect it but the closest appointment was 2 weeks after delivery. I took it for inspection at the Kia dealership (as what CarMax encourages people to do) paid 250$ and waited 5 hours at the dealership. Both the car's battery and the tires had problems and they need to be changed (cost is around 1250$). I called CarMax ASAP after learning this to see if they will fix these issues and I was told they need to do their own inspection to see if the Kia dealership report is accurate. So why do they tell their customers to conduct these diagnostic tests at dealerships and pay this much money when they're not going to believe/trust the results? Not only that, but the closest inspection appointment at CarMax is in another 2 weeks ( in all 3 locations I called), by that time the one month trial/ return possibility would be over. So if they tell me we can't fix the battery / tires I can't return the car. I am pretty disappointed by their service, I asked them for advise and what to do but didn't get a sufficient answer. You have to know that if the car has any issues that's gonna be on you. I'm going to return the car and buy another one from another place. Even if it's a used car, they should def fix the problems before selling it. Don't trust CarMax! read more

Very satisfied with the CarMax car buying service. I bought a car at another dealer but received a disappointingly low trade-in number for my old car (I prefer a trade-in over the hassle of a private sale). The CarMax experience was surprisingly pleasant: from start to finish the inspection took 30 minutes. A sales associate explained the process at the start, but otherwise did not try to sell me anything. This CarMax location is new, and the waiting area was clean and comfortable. Best of all, the appraisal was $1,000 higher! Since the appraisal offer lasted for 7 days, I also tried Autotrader. The Autotrader "Instant Cash Offer" was so low that I did not even bother visiting the dealers listed to negotiate a better price. I completed the sale with CarMax the following week (the visit took another 30 minutes). Overall, a great experience and a better alternative to dealer trade-ins. read more

This is a review of the Serramonte CarMax in Colma on Saturday August 1, 2018. We had a wonderful experience there. We looked around the lot and found the car we wanted. Nobody followed us around trying to make us buy a car we didn't want. Richard Bailey, the sales consultant who helped us once we decided on a car was great! He was very friendly and helpful. He did not try to tell us what we should buy, and was not at all pushy. He did not race through all the paperwork, so we could actually understand what was we were getting into. When it was time for everything to be signed, Maureen helped us with that. She was also very nice and took her time explaining things. Also, I will mention that we did go to a regular dealership down the street first to see what they had. As soon as we got there a salesman asked what we were looking for, and when we told him he said "you don't want that, you want this", and kept trying to steer us to cars we did not want. Yes I bought a used car here but I should have looked at reviews for this location before starting the process. Everything was great when I walked in, but when I wanted to test drive, I had to wait 20 minutes because the person helping me was helping someone else. Finally, someone different helped me with the test drive. During the test drive, she was talking on the phone to her husband. Uhhhh....no. After driving two cars, my husband and I came back 2 days later to buy. The person kept saying "It'll be quick. Itll be quick." I thought we would be out within an hour -- she should have just said from the beginning it would take over 2 hours. I'm happy with the car but not with the service. My Carmax horror story and why you should avoid them at all costs: November 2019 Blair and I decided to buy a used 2012 Ford Fiesta from Carmax (after they assured me it was a good car and had a clean bill of health) because he was driving to and from DE for work and I needed a car because I was pregnant with Fallon. Within the month of having the car I had gotten a flat tire. When I went to have the tire replaced, I found out that the other 3 tires were dry rotted which thank God I found out before the tires exploded and I risked the life of me and my unborn child!!! Still within a month of having the car the buttons on the steering wheel panel were not working and the fan control knob for the heat/AC was not working. Then Blair went to drive the car to get me to the hospital only to have the door handle break off in his hand. Then once summer started and it started getting hot, I was traveling with my entire family in the car including my 2 month old and my 9 year old. The AC was not working at all causing all of us to be uncomfortably hot in the car. I called carmax immediately and they referred me to their outsourced repair shop. Took it to the shop only to find out the repair shop did no repairs to the car but wanted $200 out of pocket just for the diagnosis which I come to find out that the compressor was leaking and needed to be replaced. I called up carmax right away super passed off and explained that this was a faulty car and should not be having so many problems after not even having the car a year and I no longer felt safe driving my family in the car. Carmax did absolutely NOTHING to resolve the issue and refused to take their POS car back and basically washed their hands of the issue. Their only solution was either selling back the car to Carmax and paying off the loan upfront (which was $10000) or trading it in for another car and having a much higher car payment. After pleading with Carmax and saying that my family's life was at risk with their vehicle, they still did NOTHING!!! So I looked into seeing what it would be to trade the car in and get another car. After dealing with several representatives and managers, I finally found a car with a great offer with my mom as cosigner however the car needed to be transferred from NC (which took 2 weeks mind you). However the problem was that they put my mom as primary and me as cosigner which wouldn't have worked for insurance purposes being that it was my car and I was the driver. So we were told we would have to rerun the finance application with me as primary. Right away I got nervous that the offer would go away or come back with something worse. I spoke to several reps and managers that assured me the offer would remain the same and I had nothing to worry about. Finally I go into Carmax yesterday to get the car that I was so excited to get only to fund out that low and behold- NO OFFER!!! I explained to the sales person that I was promised by several managers and reps that the offer wouldn't be an issue. The girl just shrugged her shoulders and told me there was nothing more she could do for me and I ended up leaving carmax with the same unsafe POS car that they originally sold me!! The overall experience was great, as we were looking to get a car that weekend. We filled out the pre-qualification and got approved for a fair price due to our not so good credit score. The sales rep Robert Lewis was excellent. Very knowledgeable, and had a selection of cars ready to view based on the cars we were interested in getting. The only downsize was the wait time, as it took about 3.5 hours to complete, due to our paperwork not processing. When I came in I was greeted by a nice lady named Grace who helped me understand how the lot was set up.
