I found DJ Computers on Yelp and drove over with my laptop this morning. Danny was very cordial (in a natural way), clearly knew his stuff, communicated very clearly the possible outcomes and associated costs. I said OK and paid for the $75 diagnostics. It turned out to be one of the main likelihoods he mentioned - Windows OS corrupted - and (with my pre-approval) he installed a clean new copy of the OS (I had successfully made backups). I dropped it off at about 11:15 this morning, and he called just before 3 to tell me to come pick it up, with clean-running normal Windows OS, plus a thoroughly cleaned keyboard surface, case, and screen.
