Yes, the hype is real. These empanadas were soooo good and soooo fresh! And please, get the green sauce. Like another reviewer said, I could happily drink the sauce. This was the first food truck that I tried in my week in Madison (went to the food trucks everyday). And it was definitely the highlight looking back. The food is flavorful and fresh.

Dang you, Caracas Empanadas! You're too good. I find myself craving you literally every Saturday when the weather is warm and I know you'll be available at the farmers' market. The plantain and garlic vegetarian empanadas are perfection. I am routinely lost for what to have for brunch when I make my way out to the cart and that's not an option. Nothing else sounds good after I've set my mind on those crispy, amazing pockets. This past weekend I gave in and tried the vegetarian offering of the day when my beloved plantain and garlic variety wasn't available for the second farmers market of the season (and leaving empty-handed last week). I think it was more or less their signature pabellon, sans meat: rice, beans, plantain, and avocado. It was super delish and super filling. I ordered the two for $5 and it was almost too much. Definitely a great deal for a meal on the go. Now, for as amazing as the empanadas are, what really puts them over the top is the guasacaca. In general, I hate cilantro (I don't have the dreaded soap flavor reaction, I just do not care for it at all). I will go out of my way to ask that cilantro be removed from my orders. However, when combined with garlic and whatever else goes into CE's killer recipe it becomes the most delicious thing on the planet. I want to take shots of this sauce straight from the condiment cup. Not a bite of my empanada goes by that I am not dunking it into the guasacaca first. You may have had guasacaca elsewhere, but it likely does not even compare to this green giant. If I somehow haven't decimated my container(s) of guasacaca with my empanadas the leftovers go in the fridge. It's too precious to chuck into the trash, even if I only have enough for two tortilla chips. I love you, Caracas Empanadas.

Every Saturday I stop at Caracas Empanadas after my farmer's market rounds, and I honestly look forward to it all week. Two words: DAT SAUCE. I should be upset that they use a flour based shell rather than a corn flour shell. In most of Venezuela, Caracas included, the traditional outer shell of an empanada is made with corn, for a nice thick but crispy outer layer. The owner told me once that he tried to do it that way originally, but the supply of Harina Pan (the cornflour of choice) is expensive and unpredictable. So to be consistent he decided to stick to flour. Bummer. But as much as I want to care about authenticity, I just don't in this case because it's so delicious. My personal favorite, the Pabellón, is slightly more expensive than the other filings, but the filling blend is spot on and is totally worth it. But no matter which filling you choose, make sure you get plenty of that amazing green Guasacaca sauce. It's the highlight of my day. No joke. I asked the guy today if I can buy it in bulk. He said yes and that plenty of people do, you just have to ask for it in advance via their Facebook page. Awesome. I've been eating here for years, the sweet lady working there even know my name, yet it had never occurred to me to buy their sauce in quantity for personal use until today. What a fool I have been! Anyway don't miss these guys. Venezuelan food holds a special place in my heart, and Caracas Empanada warms my soul. They will not disappoint. Just get there early if you visit them on Saturdays, before the lines get long and they sell out of options.

Oh how I love my empanadas! I have had the pleasure of tasting many empanadas over the last few weeks and while these may not be the same as the ones I had in Puerto Rico, they are might tasty. I highly recommend the plantain and garlic as well as the guava and cream cheese selections. The green sauce is also a must! I have yet to try the meat ones and am sure hey will be just as delicious. So when you se the bright blue truck with a rainbow of yellow, blue and red be sure to stop and check them out. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

The shredded beef and cheese empanada was my favorite bite from the 2014 Taste of Madison.

Shredded beef and cheese in a deep fried pastry shell and slathered with a zesty homemade Guasacaca sauce - how can you go wrong with that! The short answer: you can't. Caracas Empanada flat out serves up some of the best Latin comfort food in town. Chef Luis Dompablois grew up in Caracas and his food cart is dedicated to showcasing scrumptious Latin American street food. His most popular item, also the trailer's namesake, is the Venezuelan-style empanada that he serves fresh and crispy. Encased in a flakey flour shell, these industrial-grade treats come in a wide variety of fillings (ground beef and cheese, shredded beef and cheese, chicken, pulled pork, cheese) and pack serious flavor. While empanadas are exceptional, adding plenty of tangy Guasacaca sauce makes them otherworldly. Trust me on that. If you have a sweet tooth, don't forget to check out the dessert empanadas (chocolate, strawberry and chocolate, banana and chocolate, apple and cinnamon) - they are just as spectacular. On the other hand, if churros are more your thang, Caracas Empanadas serves up a fine, fine version of this deep fried treat.

Been a while, empanadas! Be it your ground beef, chicken or the sweet one: bananas and chocolate or only chocolate, you're always delectable! Get 2 for $5 for the former and $2 for any sweet one! The man has always been nice! Leave some tip for their delish food and sweet service! And your day will be so much brighter :)

Can you order empanadas without the peppers?

Sorry, we stew our meats in peppers and onions. They are slow cooked and not overpowering.

What days and times is the cart/are the carts out?

    Do they have tequeños?

Sorry but we do not serve tequeños at the moment. We have two carts now--an empanada cart and an arepa cart. Both are in the same locations and same times. Luis

Even bolder, they hauled everything over to Science Dr., which can be a wasteland for like operations. They can get away with it because it is obvious, based on their menu, they step their sliders up a whole 'nother level. Everything (even the vegetarian options) read so appetizing. The dribbles were making my way to my chin. It would be embarrassing, but I'm sure they see it all the time. Their service was very friendly and efficient. My order was styrofoamed in two minutes. I was in the mood for Italian, but also wanted something spicy to battle my sinuses. I opted for two mix/match sliders and chips combo. The sliders were; "Powerball" - homemade marina-soaked juicy meatball stuffed with gooey mozzarella with deliciously fresh basil leaves floating in the sauce & "Italy on Wisconsin" -- a roma tomato and fresh mozzarella slice topped with the basil, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Too finish it off, I had to snag the handmade thick-cut potato chips with garlic wasabi! The meatball slider was perfect old school Italian-American with a touch of class stepping it up with basil and perfectly oozing mozzarella. Even better was the incredible "Italy on Wisconsin" - AKA 'Caprese Salad on a Bun"; I never thought that it could work so well, but it was, so fresh and saliva inducing, I wanted more! Of course their buns are perfect (don't say that in the wrong company)! Finally, I finished with the chips. There was a massive mound of perfectly crispy, crunchy and salted real potato-ey goodness. The wasabi sauce was sinus-clearing and delicious -- the garlic was a light undercurrent, but added to its robust flavor. The budget gourmet lunch was only $8.00! It was certainly more satisfying than grabbing a Pop Tart from vending or walking further for a bland sub or a slice of grease-drenched pizza. You gotta have this. I will go as many times as they will return to Science Dr. I'm almost certain that I'll love everything they offer.

Paid $9 for jerk pork and chicken over rice and beans, walked it back to my office only to discover the rice was no good. :( I ate some of the jerk meat, and both pork and chicken were severely dry, minimal sauce and flavor. I thought maybe the heat from the meats caused the mushiness in the rice, so I sniffed it and was able to scent a foul odor. I haven't attended for a number of years, and I was excited to be back once again. This year we got there early on opening day. The weather was clearing, but there was a little rain still coming down. We decided to take one "lap" around the square to make a plan of attack for the many food choices. Fortunately, within that 30-45 mins, the weather cleared.... But it also brought a mass of humanity! The lines at all of the "blue ribbon" winning stands where extremely long. Pretty much a 15 min wait, which was a bit of a let down because we were heading to the Badger Game and just didn't have the time to wait that long at all the stands we wanted to try. I was also let down by the prices. Like everything, I know things have gone up. But $4.29 for a bottle of water? Come on... I'm used to these prices at many events, but why at Taste of Madison? Not sure if I'll be back. With each dish being $5-6 and drinks being the price they are, I'd rather just read the web sight and just go to the businesses that look most intriguing, without waiting in line and standing while I eat with a plastic fork. Maybe it was the day and time that I attended that led to the longer lines than I remember. This event is still something I'd recommend. The capital square is an awesome location for this event, and it IS fun to listen to the great music, and if you are going to make a whole day out it, the lines may not bother you.
