My oh my. Without a doubt Madison's best food cart. Let's get the logistics out of the way. Cool looking cart, with good service, and while it's a tad pricey it's not bad for what you get. It helps that the cart tends to situated either on the lovely library mall or capital square. Anytime you can get a decently healthy meal that tastes as good as this one it's a small miracle. Each component of the dishes I have tried are tasty, and they have a few sauces available to try that you absolutely should use as they are great. Dang those sauces are delishy! Conveniently already color coded green, yellow, and red in order of spiciness, these sauces were by far the best part of my meal. I was so sad that I was in a hurry because I only put a small squirt of each of them on the cilantro rice that I got. The rice was redonkulously yummy as well, but I definitely skimped on the sauce to rice ratio. I really wish I had isolated the taste of the sauces but I mixed them all up and scarfed it all down because it was so delicious. The rice goes so well with the salad and avocado, the perfect mix of fresh and creamy. Will definitely be going again to try some other things out TLDR: sip on that sauce! read more

The owner is always smiling and is so kind! I opted for the aji de gallina. Every bit of the dish was lovely - the salad was crisp, sweet, and complemented the creaminess and savoriness of the actual aji de gallina. I doused my dish in the yellow sauce the owner provides to add a layer of spiciness to the meal; it's the perfect, gentle kick in the mouth that balances out other aspects of the dish. This food cart is bomb! I've been twice and loved my dish both times. The chicken adobo is guuud and even comes in a half size serving for when you want a snack but can't stomach a whole meal. The chili chicken (Aji de gallina) is incredible... really fresh shredded meat, a delicious creamy chili sauce, and rice and veggies to fill you up. The dipping sauces are my favorite part! The green one is spicy and the yellow one is even hotter. They both add so much flavor to the rice, so if you like spice, get a lot! My top most favorite food cart. Every dish here is amazing but my all time favorite is the Arroz con Pollo. The chicken always so tender and flavorful. The slaw has a balance of sweet and zesty. And the cilantro-infused rice is like no other. The rice has soooo much flavor I would eat that as a dish itself which is available to get either as a small or large plate. It's too bad there isn't an actual restaurant you can dine in because I would be there all day and every day. Oh and don't forget the sauces. With all the construction going on this cart can be found on N. Lake St. as you walk towards lake mendota. I've only eaten at this place once so far but I would definitely come back. I got the chicken chili. But by no means is if like any American chili. I would say it is more like a curry. It is in a mild sauce with potatoes and an egg served on the side. There are two sauces that they offer that you can slather over your meal. One is green and made from jalapeños. The other is yellow and I couldn't catch what they said it was made of. But be warned the yellow one is the spicier one! The green jalapeño one is rather mild and less creamy. Both tasty though! read more

YUM! I'd been eyeing this food cart for a few weeks now, but there has always been another cart that I've wanted to try more..so I've been putting it off, and off, and off, until today! I'm still not quite sure what Peruvian cuisine entirely entails, so I just ordered something off the menu which I thought I could pronounce without making a fool of myself. Hence, the half order of chicken adobo (for only $5!). Let me tell you though, it was delish!! The half-size is perfectly portioned for lunch, and won't leave you with the post-meal food baby or the mid-afternoon coma. However, you also have the option of getting a full-sized serving for $7 if you are feeling extra hungry. The chicken with the lentils and the fresh coleslaw really hit the spot! The lentils were really soft and perfectly seasoned, but not so much so that they overpowered the chicken. I also think I tasted a hint of lemon juice in the jasmine rice, which was a nice counterpart to the heat from the marinated chicken. I threw on a few squirts of the green sauce for good measure, but after finishing my entire meal, I'm still not really sure if it was a hot sauce or yogurt-based sauce or what. There really is a lot of flavor in the adobo! Surco is definitely one of the carts to try if you are ever in the area for lunch. Very low on spice and full of flavor, they have 3 levels of spicy sauces that can be used to enhance flavor and add some heat! The tacu tacu is a vegetarian option and has a rice and lentil cake with their signature sauce and salad The Aji de gallina is called chilli chicken but is not at all spicy. It is flavored with a signature sauce (not the spicy kind). Comes with rice, boiled potatoes and delicious salad. I wasnt a fan of the potatoes since they were literally boiled potatoes, but were easy to pick out. The aroz con pollo was by far my favorite. The chicken has delicious flavor and comes with their signature jasmine rice and salad! I went here 2 weeks in a row - that us how much I enjoyed their food! The cart is by library mall at the park street end of state street and the other he said is usually at MLK Blvd (I havent check this one). Peruvian food is hard to find, so if you're looking for that specifically I guess this is the place. If you're just looking for a good lunch, there are so many options and I'm not sure this would be my choice. The food really wasn't that bad, just not my favorite. I got the large Adobo Chicken and it was really just medium, bordering on small. Another thing I didn't love was that the chicken was a little tough. Maybe I'm being picky, but I just thought it could be better. Lastly, the line was just really long and they only had one person preparing food. Food trucks are small, but they needed at least one more cook in there. Need to know if you come: they have three sauces out front: Green, Yellow, and Red. The green is the mild, red medium, and the yellow is pretty hot. Personally I liked all of them, but don't get the yellow if you're not ready for a kick! read more

This is a great food cart. They have a good mix of delicious vegetarian dishes and meat dishes. So far I haven't found anything I don't like, and I have tried almost everything on their menu, which is fabulous! My favs are: Chicken and rice -- cilantro-infused rice with chicken (don't remember if it's BBQ or grilled). For the vege option, they have cilantro rice (with avocado slices in place of chicken). The cilantro rice dishes go really well with their sauces. There are two, the green one is mildly spicy with a tinge of sweetness. Be careful tough, the yellow sauce is VERY spicy. Chilli chicken -- I don't remember this being spicy, so chilli probably means something totally different in peruvian terms. This is cream-based with shredded chicken, potatoes and egg. Very yummy!! Super lomo sandwich -- This is a heavy and highly-filling dish. Perfect to share amongst two small-ish eaters, or if you are feeling very hungry. This has Couple of things: 1) They do get busy during lunch hours. Avoid the period 12-12:30 if you really mind the longer wait. 2) I am not sure which days they are closed. Sometimes I would find myself craving for some good peruvian food and head over to the Library Mall only to find them closed. 3) Since the Library Mall is currently under construction they have moved to Lake St right beside Walgreens at the start of State. read more

As a disclaimer, I am a vegetarian. So, I can't tell you anything about the meat dishes. What I can tell you is that the Tacu Tacu ($7) is unbelievable. It is a rice and bean cake covered in a delicious sauce and fresh avocado slices. Several of us in my office are hooked on the stuff. If you get the opportunity, this stand is WELL worth your time. Just another one of Madison's amazing food carts! I am so jealous of you guys now that I live in the south side of Chicago, where great food (especially carts) is hard to find close by. Their tacu tacu and cilantro rice dish (I forget the name) are listed under vegetarian but they are both vegan as well. They aren't huge dishes, but they are packed with flavor! My favorite was the cilantro rice, which came with avocado and cabbage - I liked to dress it up with their hot sauce on the side. Extremely interesting flavor combinations, but I am completely unfamiliar with Peruvian food outside of this cart. A little expensive for a food cart, but they use organic and/or local ingredients. How have I not tried Surco's food truck before today? The gorgeous weather beckoned my hubs and I to grab lunch and sit on the terrace today. He had the lomo saltado (steak) sandwich which was served in a bread bowl. The perfectly marinated meat was topped with fried onion, lettuce, cheese and avocado. It was a whole lot of messy goodness. I had the tacu tacu which was this fantastic rice and beans concoction with a savory sauce. The accompanying lettuce and avocado had a light passion fruit vinaigrette dressing. I've been frequenting this Library mall food cart for over a year, and it's one of my favorites. For $7, the arroz con pollo features marinated chicken on a bed of really tasty cilantro-infused rice with a side of homemade slaw. I've developed a strong addiction to this green rice, especially when you add a generous amount of the green jalapeno sauce that the cart keeps in front. The yellow sauce is also spicy and delicious. Their super lomo sandwich is huge, with beef strips in a sourdough bread bowl, and they also offer Inka Cola, which is unique. I've tried a few of the other dishes, but wasn't a big fan of the chili chicken's sauce. That's just my opinion though. The man who runs the cart is always courteous and kind. Surco food cart is AWESOME! I've only had the "Chicken Adobo" and it is phenomenal. The chicken comes marinated in a red guajillo sauce. Not spicy but very flavorful. The lentils are cooked perfectly, white rice on the side, and a small cabbage slaw with a delicious dressing. There is a green sauce outside the window that is a bit spicy, but freaking great! I always make sure to top my chicken with the green sauce before I walk away. I buy the $5.00 half portion and that leaves me full. Best food cart in Madison! As a college student, I always miss home cooked meals and this food cart makes up for that. I always get the half order chicken adobo and it comes with lentils, chicken, a little slaw, and rice. It's the perfect portion for a small afternoon lunch in between classes. It is so nice to mix things up and get a plate of food rather than just a sandwich or salad. And its seriously so delicious.
