Bruschetta

I have had this place on my list for a while and seen it on social media so we tried it the other day for my sister's birthday. Very loud inside and hard to hear and it wasn't packed. Staff were nice. A tad slow. I did not think the food was excellent. It was eh. I got the fettuccini cara Mia and as someone who almost only orders seafood I found this very fishy to me. I did not like the sauce or the crab or even the shrimp. The fried calamari was okay. I've had better. Mom liked her chicken pollard. The French onion soup was okay. The arugula salad was dry. The carbonara was very thick. Would not come back. Was disappointed because the reviews seemed great.

Chicken "Mello"

What a great experience on a lovely night. Parking is no issue as there's plenty of street parking and lot across the street. Upon entering the restaurant the friendly hostess warmly greeted us. We had a table for 4. Our waiter Jesus was amazing. It's BYOB and they were very accommodating with the ice, cooler and pouring. Now, what we came for, the food!! Amazing! We had the sea bass which was a special, two orders of their famous chicken Parmesan and one order of the chicken mello (breaded thin chicken breast in white wine and capers). The appetizers of lobster bisque and calamari were also amazing. We had desserts to go but we took early bites and can confirm the ricotta cheesecake and carrot cake are the way to go. The ambiance is perfect for date night, girls night or family.

$35. Tiny portion, dry and bland!

As soon as they brought us the complimentary crumbly dry Aldi bread and old cold fried zucchini stuck together I knew we should leave. The recommended chicken Parmesan was so nasty! Chicken was thin and dry, sauce bland. And for the price, a major ripoff. The interior is also very dated inside, worn and tattered. I do not recommend.

Was here for a Valentine's Day dinner. Place was packed to the max. Couldn't hear my significant other speak to me from the other side of the table because of the noise level. The food was decent though. Not sure if I would come back

Tuna special

I haven't had an Italian meal in a while where every single dish was a hit with everyone. Cara Mia did just that. First off, it's BYOB which automatically gives it a ton of points in my book. For appetizers we ordered the tuna special and the mozzarella. For entrees we ordered the sole special, tableside chicken parm and shrimp scampi (added angel hair pasta). We also got the cookie cake for dessert. Everything was fantastic. For me personally the chicken parm and tuna special stood out but like I said, everything was delicious! Highly recommend this spot for any and all occasions.

Everything about this restaurant is fantastic, delicious food, beautiful atmosphere ( gorgeously decorated for Christmas), amazing service, and you can't beat it's a BYOB. Amazing menu, don't miss the table side parmigiana entrees done perfectly... Make sure you call for a reservation definitely one hot spot all the locals know about. Highly recommend

I love this classic BYOB Italian restaurant. It has all the fan favorites but the chicken Parm served tableside has to be one of my favorite chicken parm in New Jersey. The gnocchi were delicious and the pasta dish you can't go wrong. It's BYOB so enjoy.

Tableside chx parm

First things first....my GF and I heard about this place via Instagram as a suggested post highlighting the table-side chicken parm. (Look it up, it's phenomenal) we walked in around 8:30 with no reservation and the place was packed!! The hostess was friendly and accommodating and the staff agreed that if we wait until 9:15 we could most likely be seated. No problem. We arrived back to a once again friendly staff to show us to our table. We order beef carpaccio and French onion soup appetizers and table side chx parm and steak au poivre as entrees. Our table was gifted warm bread and an amuse bouche of tomato bruschetta and fried zucchini chips and they were the perfect snacks to open our taste buds and prepare us for our first course. Both apps were delicious!! We literally polished our plates/bowls and our entrees were cooked flawlessly as well!! The NY strip was cooked exactly as ordered and the peppercorn sauce was delicious, intact and not broken/separated like lots of places would serve. I know chicken Parmesan doesn't sound like anything spectacular but when you order chicken Parm, it tends to get soggy, even though it's a crusted chicken breast. The way they serve it tableside keeps the chicken deliciously crisp on the outside, tender, and juicy inside and the fresh, hot and bubbly cheese and sauce poured tableside is visually pleasing and looks so delicious. I would recommend it to anyone anytime. If you're ever in the area and even if you're not in the area check it out. I would go out of my way to go there again. Between showing up unannounced, being welcomed with friendly staff and the flawless food received. I have zero complaints and highly recommend this place for anyone that enjoys good Italian food cooked properly.

Happy holidays!

IG has been telling me to try this place for some time, and finally we had the chance. I cannot express how lovely of an experience this was. One of my son's absolute favorite things to eat is chicken Parmesan, so we came here to celebrate his birthday. This meal was everything. Every bite, every plate, the service, the festive holiday decor... just perfection all around. We ordered various dishes and shared them family style, happy faces all around. This place is BYOB, which is an extra bonus and a perfect location for a pre-theater meal. Cannot wait to go back.

Garlic Shrimp

We were in town to see a play at the Paper Mill Playhouse and found this nice little Italian BYOB just a stones throw away from the theatre. I first have to say that this would have been a 5 star review if it was based on the food alone, however some other factors dropped this down a notch. Let's begin with the positives first and that's the food. We started with the Garlic Shrimp for our appetizer. While we did enjoy this, tasted good, it was rather unspectacular. For our mains, when I saw they offered a table side served Chicken Parmigiana, well it was a must get and it definitely lived up to expectations. I ordered mine with a spicy vodka sauce which was delicious, not too spicy. The chicken was pounded thin and cooked perfectly. All around a great dish. My wife ordered the Linguine Vongole made with garlic, white wine, tomatoes and little neck clams. My wife orders this dish a lot and she said this was one of the best she's had. For dessert we had a delicious Limoncello Cake with strawberries and whipped cream. The cake was light, moist, lemony and delicious. To wrap up I'll mention why I dropped my review a star. First of all we had an early reservation so we were one of the first to arrive. There were a couple of nice tables at the window which were for 4 so we understood when we were seated at a table for 2 more towards the middle of the restaurant. However we noticed a little later other couples of 2 were seated at the nice window spots. Off to a bad start right there. Not only this, there was a small group of 3 standing in the middle of the dining room speaking loudly with one of them telling them and the whole restaurant about their surgical procedures, not good, just so rude. What's even worse is I think he may have been the owner or manager. As for the decor inside, kind of blah, nothing fancy, kind of expected more at a restaurant in Milburn right by the theatre. The service was the real annoying part. Our initial waitress and I'll say initial because we didn't see her again till the end, was ok, not overly friendly, explained the specials, we placed our orders and like I said, we hardly saw her. After her, there was a parade of servers who brought and picked up our food, often hovering waiting for us to finish which is just so annoying. The whole time we felt like we were rushed. Just so unprofessional. Like I said, if this was just about the food, we'd definitely be back, but everything else makes this visit a one and done for us.

The staff gave ample time for my family and I to say our hello's before greeting us with drink options. Upon sitting down our server brought us fresh bread and butter with flakey sea salt on top. For appetizers we had The Ralph Piccolo Pizza, Ricotta Crostini, Cacio E Pepe Fries, and Prosciutto Di Parma. All were insanely incredible. Great flavor, crispy where it needed to be crispy, soft where it needed to be soft. For my entree, I had the Crest De Gallo Pasta. The pomodoro sauce was on the savory side. It was a set menu and I am vegetarian, it was my option. It was good! I would love to return to try the Spicy Vodka Sauce Rigatoni. I am a spice lover. For dessert I had the most wonderful, rich, smooth chocolate mousse. The dish was called The Chocolate Spuma. It came with crumbled pistachios and fresh raspberries on the side of it. The flavors and textures together were perfect. The staff were so kind, had great humor, and fabulous manners. They held themselves very professionally. The head server for the event and the manager were lovely. I just had to pull the manager to the side and compliment all. I live 1.5 hours away but I would gladly book a weekend trip up to Maplewood, just to eat here again.

Flatbread would be really good if it were had at the restaurant instead of takeout, however air frying it to crisp up the bread would definitely address that. My GF said the eggplant was good. And the MYO I got was really good. Nice flavorful meatballs, really good sauce, and the roasted garlic was perfect a perfect addition. There was enough of a portion of each dinner for two nights of meals so value-wise, this was an excellent dinner spot. May have to try dine-in next time we come back (and we will be back).

The Reservoir Restaurant - A True Old-School Italian Gem!…read more Met up with some friends at The Reservoir Restaurant in South Orange, NJ, and let me tell you, we found a real gem! If you're a fan of old-school Italian restaurants, homemade dishes, and delicious pizza, this place needs to be on your radar! The Reservoir has been serving up Italian favorites since 1935, carrying on a family tradition that goes back generations. They're even known for their original pizza pie! Walking into a place like this reminds you of the good old days when Italian restaurants were all about generous portions, familiar flavors, and bringing people together around the table. This is a classic, no-frills Italian restaurant and pizzeria with a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere. They offer a large menu featuring traditional Italian appetizers, pasta dishes, chicken and veal entrees, salads, and, of course, pizza. Many dishes are homemade, prepared fresh, and served hot. The portions are generous, so come hungry! It's also BYOB, so bring your favorite wine or beer to enjoy with dinner. Just remember, CASH ONLY -- no credit cards accepted! Let's talk about the food! For appetizers, we ordered: Calamari Marinara - Wow! This was so tasty and well prepared. The tender calamari paired beautifully with the flavorful marinara sauce. A fantastic way to kick off our meal! Tony Salad - And what a salad! Loaded with chopped lettuce, mozzarella, provolone, salami, pepperoni, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and olives, all tossed in a garlic Parmesan vinaigrette. This salad was packed with flavor and the perfect starter to share around the table. Definitely a winner! For dinner, we enjoyed: Penne Vodka with Chicken & Mushrooms - Penne tossed in a creamy vodka sauce with chicken and mushrooms. Rich, satisfying, and full of that comforting Italian flavor you crave from a neighborhood Italian restaurant. Two Cheese Pizzas - You can't visit an old-school Italian pizzeria without ordering pizza! We went with two classic cheese pies, and they did not disappoint. The crust was thin, with a beautiful bake and just the right amount of crispness. Simple, delicious, and proof that sometimes the classics really are the best! And somehow, we STILL had room for dessert! Ha! We finished our feast with a trio of sweet treats: * Cannoli - A crisp shell filled with creamy whipped ricotta cannoli cream and rich chocolate morsels. A classic Italian dessert done right! * Boston Cream Pie - A deliciously sweet way to round out the meal. * Brownie Cheesecake - Because why choose between chocolate and cheesecake when you can have both? LOL! Talk about a FOOD COMA! We definitely didn't leave hungry! Let's give credit to the service! Our server was fantastic! They were attentive throughout the meal, constantly checking on us, stopping by for refills, and making sure we had everything we needed. Great service makes a big difference, especially when you're enjoying a meal with friends, and our server really helped make the experience that much better. Final thoughts The Reservoir is the kind of old-school Italian restaurant that reminds you why these neighborhood establishments have stood the test of time. With its long family history, generous portions, traditional Italian comfort food, and classic pizza, it's a wonderful spot to gather with friends and family. The food was fantastic, the service was impeccable, and we had a great time enjoying a delicious meal together. Whether you're stopping in for pizza, sharing a few appetizers, or sitting down for a full Italian dinner, there's plenty to enjoy here. If you're in South Orange or the surrounding area, I highly recommend giving The Reservoir a try. Just bring your appetite, your favorite BYOB beverage, and some cash! I'll definitely be back! Restaurant details added: The Reservoir dates back to 1935 and is known for its historic family tradition and original pizza pie. Its current location is at 106 West South Orange Avenue.
