Really wanted to like this place, and I feel like the service was 4 star, but the food was 2 star for us. The one lady who was cooking and serving was doing a great job, and we felt welcomed in and attended to right away. We had some trouble deciding what to have, as a lot of things on the menu sounded good, but it was unfortunately not to be. I ordered the breakfast garbage plate, which had hash browns, sausage gravy and two eggs (cooked medium). I added the house made hot sausage for $5.65 and got 1 approximately 4 oz sausage. The hash browns were fine, nothing special, and the sausage gravy was woefully lacking in flavor except for salt. The eggs were a little overcooked, but that's my fault...or the fault of breakfast cooks all over the country who don't do over easy eggs properly. I order over medium cuz I hate when the white isn't cooked. These were definitely cooked. The sausage was not good. It was sweet on the palate...like way sweet. It didn't taste much of sausage flavor, and there was a hit of heat on the finish. My sister had the sausage gravy & biscuit and she said the same thing about the gravy. I wish it was a better result-I'd love to give business to a local place that had good food. read more

Staying at Hampton for a girls weekend. Decided to have a better Bfast than the hotel. Glad we did this was much better! The 3 of us all got something different. I got the Bfast sandwich with egg over easy, provolone and bacon on the ciabatta with hash brown cakes. Delish! Just enough. Someone got the stuffed French toast with walnuts and someone else got the pumpkin pancakes. All were good we liked it and everyone ate everything! When I flew home for Christmas a few month back, the first place I went to before going to my parents house...was my sisters house, HA! Second place was this little restaurant located in downtown Geneva. A THRIVING metropolis! I saw 2 people on the street that morning! Watch out for traffic too! All joking aside, Geneva is hella tiny and traffic some times can be a pain in the arse, but they only in the "small town crazy traffic" sense haha! When I was a wee boy, I went to school in Geneva, New York AAAAND....one of the people I went to school with was this girl named, Jenny. I won't put her last name because I mean, come on, that would be creepy, lol! Sooooo, the day before I flew home, my friends asked where we should go to breakfast. One of them suggested this place and we all agreed to go seeing as none of us have ever been AND....Jenny owns this restaurant. We walk in and it was pretty quiet. Then again, it was like 10am. So breakfast crowds usually clear out earlier. However, a week later when I went down to the city, the bus was located just outside the restaurant. I was there at like 715am and the restaurant was PACKED! And why? Because the place is THAT good! And it must be, they've been there a long time. Last time I saw Jenny was in 1996. That's when I grad....oh never mind! I don't need to age myself anymore than I already have! That was the last time I saw her tho. Was she there on this day? Nah. She wasn't. So Jenny, If u actually read this, I'll see you in probably what...15 years? 20? Haha! Jenny runs a great restaurant. Food was great. Atmosphere is a homey little upstate NY diner feel...which is the best! National chains are the worst! Always support local diners and businesses like this! Staff was soooooooo nice! Our waitress, wish I got her name was very hard working, was on top of everything, didn't keep us waiting for anything. And when i told her I wanted a chocolate milk....she laughed. Then again, they all do because uhhh apparently it's funny when my um 32, 36, 30 year old ass asks for a chocolate milk! Who knew! Haha! Check this place out. You'll truly love it. And I'm not just saying this because I know who owns it. Jenny and I are friends on Facebook and have been for like 10 years. We've chatted maybe two times lol! So see, I'm not just saying this because I've known her for so long. I'm saying this about her restaurant because it's true. If it was awful, I'd either NOT write a review or do what I always do....lay it alllllll out! After all, Yelp is for reviews, right? Captains Cafe, y'all have a great thing going here. Three of us came to Geneva to embark on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail, over a nice weekend in July 2020 to escape from the stresses of work and COVID. Before we headed back home, we wanted to grab a good breakfast in town. After searching on Yelp, we came across Captain's Café and decided to check this place out. We arrived around 9:00am on a warm Sunday and were able to walk inside and pick a table at the front of the restaurant (or we could've sat outside at one of the tables on the sidewalk). Our server was a friendly, young woman who immediately brought over menus, silverware, and took our drink orders. We arrived right before it started to get crazy busy so our server got tied up cashing people out and checking in on other tables. That was alright though as it allowed us to browse the menu and decide. She did a good job making sure we had enough coffee throughout our stay though. I was pleased with the speedy service from the short amount of time it took to order and deliver our breakfasts. They were promoting COVID safety measures with social distancing and mask-wearing throughout the restaurant. After staring at the menu and their specials for the day, I decided to go with one of their breakfast specials: the Chicken Waffle S.O.S. This was excellent! The waffle was cooked perfectly - fluffy, soft, and hot. The piece of chicken was piping hot and juicy! The fried egg was cooked perfectly too and I loved cutting into it and seeing that oozing yolk! The sausage gravy poured all over this sandwich was soo good! I don't ever order anything with sausage gravy so this was a nice treat. With the sausage gravy on top like it was, I couldn't eat this like a traditional sandwich, but that was probably a good thing (slowed me down from eating it all in one or two bites! haha). The sandwich itself is deceiving as, to me, it looked a bit on the small side, but man is it filling. Having this with a couple cups of delicious diner-style coffee should fill anyone up for a while. And another thing I love about ordering breakfast food is how low-priced it is. All-in-all, we had a great experience at Captain's Cafe. I would love to come back here again for breakfast. I saw someone order their pancakes and they looked awesome, so I know what I'll be ordering next time! read more

A very, very typical and unimpressive diner in downtown Geneva. Linoleum floors, a single A/C unit over the front door, rather hokey decor (of CAPTAIN themed things - like Captain Crunch and Captain and Tenille record albums). Looks like it has been there 50 years and everything smells faintly of egg. The menu options are limited to two categories: High Fat and Heavy. When I wanted to order the frittata sans meat I was told it was not possible as it was already pre-mixed. Hmmm. OK then, could I just get a veggie omelet? Sure. Except what I got was an omelet filled with onion, tomato, yellow peppers and cheese that was so cold on the inside the cheese remained in its shredded state. This place is also owned by the same people that own the smoke and knife shop next door. Its kind of a slightly run-down place that appears to cater almost entirely to locals, even though it is located on the main drag of the town. read more

Normal dining experience you'd expect. Came to eat on a Friday morning at 9. The place was packed! There was only 1 server and 1 busser. We decided to sit outside which was our 1st mistake. Out of sight, out of mind. The busser basically took care of us. Regarding the food...great! I ordered a western omlette and toast. Everything was great. We did order coffee and was only filled the original time. She asked if we wanted more coffee upon delivery of food but never came back with coffee. But, I will chalk that up to being busy. It's just coffee. No big deal. Prices are cheap and food is good. I'd recommend this diner based on that. But if you are looking for speedy experience, maybe hold tight or sit at the bar. read more

Went here for breakfast while we were out that way. The wait was long, but we were willing to wait because the food looked very good. The waitress took my name and told us it'd be a 30 minute wait. The weather was really nice so we walked over to the lake to wait and came back after 25 minutes. The dinning area was pretty slowed down now, so we assumed we would be seated. Instead we were told that even though we were put on a list that they had closed. They wouldn't seat us and the girl who told us we were closed just kinda stared at us and didn't offer to see if we could eat or anything. So we had waited 25 minutes and weren't aloud to eat. Cozy little place for brunch. Hobby ordered the number one combo, very nice Italian toast, i think its toasted with butter or cream, its really crispy on the side but soft on the inside. We waited over a 1/2 hour to even get acknowledged, get a menu and coffee.... then about another 1/2 hour until someone returned to take our breakfast order , no coffee refill, no silverware and we waited again another 40 minutes for our food to arrive... still no silverware until we asked !!! What a disappointment. The floor had food on it throughout - disgusting. The paper ring around my utensils had a red smudge mark from other food. When I ordered a sandwich, that's when I was told there was no Jen's bread - should have said that upfront as I probably would have ordered something else. The BLT advertised as three layers is only 2. No pickle - they were out. I had to leave my seat to go to the counter to ask for the drink I ordered. Bad service. Unclean. Food not as advertised. The biscuits are scratch made as is the gray using locally made sausage. It had some heat to it which, in my mind, is perfect!
