My Mom and I ate here for lunch when while my husband and the kids were at the beach. The food here was on of the beast meals we had on the island. I highly recommend eating here at least once during your stay at Emerald Island. We split the soft shell crab plate. Between the two of us we still couldn't eat half of it. The servings are huge!!! Their fries are amazing. They are fresh and crisp. The crab was just amazing. They even throw in a bunch of shrimp which was a nice surprise. They are very reasonably priced. I really, really want to like this place. I absolutely resent Big Oak for becoming a money printing machine, milking their old vibe. Like, so much that even when I want it, I won't let myself, because it just feels unethical. And Captain's Kitchen was so good. For a few years. But my last pass, the shrimpburgers were soggy and bland and nothing. Still better than most in the area. Just so much oil. And their hush puppies were beyond hideous. All oil. And sugar. You know the things people say about northern cornbread? That. I like the pre-wizened old sailor doing his angle. Appreciate the game. But get your teenagers to at least try to make good stuff. Your only competition is Big Oak, ffs. Get back to your glory days of a few years back. And I'm all for mixing ranch and offbrand sriracha as your special sauce. I can 100% see why this place consistently gets top marks. Captain's Kitchen is proof that you don't have to go to a fancy restaurant to get delicious, fresh and quality food. We walked over from the condo where we were staying around 1 o'clock on a Thursday, and there was a crowd but they move the line very quickly. The "Captain" himself takes your order, and he is literally the kindest and friendliest person. I urge you to go to their Facebook page and read up on his background - it only made me love this place more! If you forget to bring cash there's an ATM just steps away. We both ordered shrimp burgers ($7 each) and large fries ($4). There's also some sriracha ranch sauce available to pour into portion cups. Definitely get you some of that for the sandwich and the fries! The burger is jam packed with SO many shrimp...I almost had enough to make a second sandwich from what fell out the sides! So tender, so tasty, the breading was perfect and didn't overwhelm the shrimp. There was just enough slaw too. The fries could have been a little crispier, but I can't even take away for that because the sandwich was that good. Not surprisingly, I finished the whole thing and had to go for an immediate food coma nap on the beach. If you're anywhere near the area you must come here! Absolutely worth it! read more

It was located in the Island Consignment Shop parking lot when I came so make sure to check their facebook page for an up to date address. They run out of stuff early, so think lunch rather than dinner. Excellent fried soft shell crabs, great clam strips, good grouper, yummy shrimp. Fries were meh. Chicken was meh (I know, non-seafood loving kid in our midst). None of the staff were wearing masks so beware if this is something that bothers you. The shrimp burgers DO NOT DISAPPOINT!!! We were impressed! The shrimp were fresh, the batter was tasty, seasoned perfectly, and the portions were beyond expectations. What an amazing find! Got a tip from a local business owner to check out Captain's Kitchen and I'm so glad we went! Our family of four each chose a different sandwich (shrimp burger, soft shell crab, grouper, and crab cake) and some fries. Everything was fantastic, perfectly cooked. It's all fried, and that was exactly what we were looking for after working up appetites at The Point. Make sure to get the slaw. Don't question it. When he asks, say yes. So glad we chose to stop by! Checked out the Facebook page to find their location for the day. We got the super grouper sandwich, pork sandwich and fried pickles! The pork had such a wonderful Smokey flavor and didn't even need BBQ sauce, just their coleslaw and it was perfect! Kind of wowed by this food truck setup in a large, hot parking lot. Plenty of picnic tables ... have driven by many times over the years, finally tried it and wow, it was good. Shrimp galore on the burgers with tasty buns that held together just long enough through the grease to keep my sandwich together. We ordered the shrimp burger and chicken tender burger, hush puppies and fries. They have cold drinks in ice chests near the truck which for me, was awesome. Dare I say it? The best fried seafood on Bogue Banks? At a good truck? A resounding yes! A half pound of lightly battered shrimp in either a roll as a shrimp burger or in a paper tray. Either way. Incredible. Hot. Delicious and price-worthy. There is no ambiance or wait staff. No air conditioning. But no concern. Stand in line, order, pay in cash (no cards), wait a minute or two and take your brown paper bag home or to the nearby tables. Only complaint is the lack of trash cards, but try really hard and you can get over it the same way I did. Eat a magnificent oyster, or a marvelous shrimp, or even a mighty big bite of a massive fish sandwich. Your mind will forget all about the trash and will have a moment of bliss. We got shrimp burgers and a grouper burger. Seeing as they put a half pound of shrimp on a burger that's cheaper than I can buy a half pound of shrimp, I didn't think it would be amazing. It was. My kids are ready to go back and spend their OWN money for more. The shrimp is perfectly seasoned. It's perfectly breaded. And it's not super small wimpy shrimp. They're decent sized shrimp. I went to a restaurant on a pier near here and paid over $100 for some seafood that tasted like Gorton's from the freezer. This place is incredible and I cannot understand how they keep their prices so low. The folks are fast and friendly. Just go here. It's truly magical. I don't know how they pull this off in such a small space. Brilliant. Highly recommended. We bring a lot of food to cook here because there's just not many places to eat that are worth going to. I really don't like to hand out five stars unless a place is truly exceptional. We've been on the island for half a week, and we've had some good food. However I stumbled upon this place on Yelp, and we drove the 10 mi or so to get there. It is a fairly downtrodden looking food trailer parked in front of a hardware store, with a couple of picnic tables out front in the parking lot. This is the rare find, especially in a resort community, where a food purveyor over-delivers on your expectations by leaps and bounds. I had the shrimp burger and my wife had the fried fish sandwich. Both were exceptionally fresh, quickly fried to order, and simply delicious. At $7 each, they were also a steal. We both said that our sandwiches could have sold for twice as much back home and people would buy them and pay without blinking an eye. We've still got half a week remaining, and this is the one place that we are certainly going to revisit. read more

Were very excited to try this truck based on previous reviews. Ordered some grouper burgers, fries, and a side of shrimp. The grouper burgers were probably the best of the bunch - fresh fish, soft buns (maybe a little too soft for how much fish you get). Quality sandwich if you're a grouper fan. The coleslaw they gave you to go with the sandwich was just okay; it was lacking in depth of flavor. The fries were similarly lackluster. The most disappointing was the side of shrimp. Based on previous reviews we were led to believe the shrimp was worth trying. They were tiny and not really seasoned at all, served cold. It must come differently on the sandwich because these were not cutting it. Will say however, good value for money. Stick to the sandwiches though! read more

I loved everything about this place! Super friendly staff answered a couple of questions to help us decide what to order and their recommendations were spot on! We got the oyster snack, chicken tenders and onion rings. Oysters were fresh and the breading was perfect not too thick not too thin and crispy beyond belief.
