Live right around the corner and tried this place for the first time tonight and got the fish fry dinner. No nonsense type place, moving people in and out. Carryout only, but everyone very pleasant and efficient. Came with 2 sides - choice of coleslaw, fries, macaroni salad. Fish was really excellent. Very generous portion and not overly fried/oily. Would easily say it's one of the best, if not the best, I've had around Rochester for my taste preferences. Also enjoyed the coleslaw. Fries were just alright, could have been crispier but also didnt eat for ~30 minutes after pickup so that could be more on me. Only real negative was the macaroni salad which my wife got. Really lacked a distinguishable flavor of any kind and was really bland. Maybe just caught a bad batch of it. One other note - it didn't come with a roll or lemon wedges. Not overly important but would have been nice to have. Overall will absolutely come back and try some different things on the menu, for sure worth going for the fish fry. read more

The Owner is Extremely Rude!!! We stopped in to get fish dinners recently. After looking at their menu, my husband had a question. He asked the owner his question, and the owner replied, "Can't you read?". My husband said, "Excuse me!". The owner tried to change his tune, but it was too late, and we just walked out. There are so many places to go to for a great fish dinner (The Winfield Grill, Chick'n Out, Bill Gray's, Palmers,...), where you'll not only get great food, but far superior services and get treated with respect. In addition to this owner's terrible attitude, this place has a "Very Fishy Odor", and that's never a good sign when purchasing fish from a "Fish Market". I got a hot buttered lobster roll ($30) and fried clams. The clams were mostly breading. One of them had sand. The lobster roll was weird. Rather than chunks of soft white and red meat and visible claw meat, it was cut up big squarish chunks of white, brown, and rubbery meat. I'm sure it was lobster, but the preparation/composition was very different from other places. The lobster was overcooked and rubbery. There was not enough butter. It was in a plain hotdog bun rather than a toasted brioche bun. I had to add more butter. I think you should try a warm buttered lobster roll from Nolan's on Canandaigua ($25), the restaurant or the snack shack, to know what it should look and taste like. For this price the quality has to improve... I won't be back unless I see pictures that it's better. I was really really really looking forward to having a go-to lobster roll spot. read more

Now I have been here a few times... but I've never had the fish fry. I'm guessing this is something I should try. We came here to get some oysters for NYE. The inside of this place needs either a cleaning and or a refresh. Yea it's a fish place but when you walk in you are hardcore hit with that intense fish smell. They have cases but nothing in it ... We met who we thought was the owner but it was his son. He was helpful and knowledgeable a plus when it comes to seafood. What we got product wise was great but the inside has a lot to be desired and it was like this the last time I was here too. An absolute joke of an establishment. Went in at 1045 on a Saturday morning looking to buy some seafood. Cases were empty and the rude man working asked me what I was looking for. Ummm seafood?? They apparently "hide it". When I asked the price of crab legs he has the nerve to tell me, if you have to ask the price you can't afford them. Also how crab legs are expensive and he doesn't have cheap ones. Like I am some kind of moron. Absolutely would never even consider giving this place another chance. I can always count on my fellow Yelpers to steer me towards tasty food. Captain Jim's is a good example of this. After being the consensus Yelper favorite fish fry in Rochester, I had to check it out. Captain Jim's is not much to look at from the outside or inside, but who cares when the main objective is good fish fry. The same goes for the plastic utensils and styrofoam plates. The service is friendly and prompt. The value is outstanding as $10 gets you a generous portion of fried fish, fries and coleslaw. I can't say I am a fish fry expert, especially in Rochester. My sole basis for comparison is Tap & Mallet's fish and chips. Jim win's the fish battle hands down, although I do prefer the fries at Tap & Mallet. Seemingly perfectly battered and fried, the fish is moist on the inside without being too greasy on the outside. The thin and crispy golden brown batter is truly something marvelous. Add some apple cider vinegar, a bit of ketchup and off to my happy place I go. The fries are nice and crispy, but not spectacular. The same goes with the coleslaw. Flavor wise, the fish fry was just okay for me. My expectations were probably high because this night I had a taste for fish fry and I chose Jim's based on the positive Yelp reviews. Let me start with the pluses. It was a huge piece of fish fry. It must've been a foot lengthwise, at minimum. I liked the smooth and crispy batter. It was fried well until golden. The wait in line was short and the food came up fast. Luckily, we made it before the dinner rush. The place seems more like a takeout joint, but they offer seating near the front with about seven tables or so for those who want to eat there. The downside was that it came up too fast. The fish fries were cooked ahead of time so they were plating dishes off of their buffet food line behind the counter along with my side of fries. I would've liked it fresh from the fryer and still hot. With that being said, it didn't taste cold or not fresh, just room temperature. Also, I prefer a different kind of fish. This fish was fibrous. I favor flaky fish that break off in segments when cooked. The french fries were just fries and the mac salad was okay. The tartar sauce packs were simply Kraft brand and not even that tasty, but the flavor is not within their control. I've never been disappointed with anything I've eaten at Captain Jim's. Fresh seafood, great portions and good prices for what you get. It's a small building and can be very busy with some waiting time - especially on Fridays during Lent. There is a small area for dining at the restaurant but tables are taken up fast, so as a suggestion, if you want to eat-in plan to go early and be willing to wait. Another night of my friday fish tour. Captain Jim's is on the top restaurants in Rochester for great fish fries. I'm not from the east side of town so for me this was a little hidden gem. I have passed this restaurant plenty of times in my life and frequented bars/restaurants in this area for many years. How have I never noticed this restaurant?! They closed for a few weeks to pull things together and opened today, great! They're doing a wonderful job. Currently, they're accepting call in orders and pay over the phone. They give you a time and someone brings it out to a table, you take it off the table. This obviously wont work if the weather is bad etc. But it was efficient, easy and I enjoyed it. I think this is a great way to go in to summer. Now for the food. I am following all safety guidelines when ordering out. I'm putting my food in the oven/microwave before eating. The fish was just amazing in the oven. It was a large portion, I literally have food for 2 days or an early dinner and then a second dinner. It was tasty and flaky and just cooked so well. The fries in the oven turned a little hard. I had a higher hope for them but I could could leave them. The coleslaw was delicious. Nice and creamy and the cabbage wasnt too soggy, it held the fat very well. Currently, they're only doing a fish fry with french fries and coleslaw but I look forward to trying more of their food. BEST FISH FRY IN THE ROC!!! I ordered from here a bunch of times. I always order to go, and have never dined in. Friday night I torn my lower back. A fish fry from Captain Jim's was what I was craving for comfort food. My boyfriend swing by and picked up the order and brought it home. Most of the time to go food that's fried doesn't carry well. Not these fish fries! Crispy, crunchy and full of fish flavor. I don't know what they use for the batter, but it's delish and thick. And stays right on the meat, not falling off in one piece. Stopped in recently for a fish fry and scallops to go. It was my first time going there and I drove by it twice without realizing it because the sign out front is so faded it's unreadable. The fish was very good, but the breading on the scallops was way too thick and they were overcooked to the point where the breading was like a shell that had to be cracked open to get to the scallop. Just really tender fish fried crispy in a perfect batter. Exactly what you want and need out of a fish fry. The sides were okay, the baked potatoes are appreciated. I never want more fried shit on the side of my fried fish. I know I'm weird that way, but I can't tell you how the fries or onion rings are. My wife got the baked fish and regretted it. It wasn't great, and after a bite of my son's fried fish it seemed even worse. You're coming here for one thing, just do it: get the fried. Captain Jim's is a great place in North Winton Village to grab some seafood. I don't know much about their menu, but I do know that they have one of the best fish fries around. They have other seafood options as well as fresh fish to buy and cook at home. There are a few parking spaces in front, but people usually park in the Summit FCU parking lot next door. They do have some tables to eat at in the restaurant. This is not a "sit down" restaurant with a server. You order at the counter. Don't be turned off if the line is long. They are usually ready for a crowd and can get people through fairly quickly. Do not order ahead and pick up. I made that mistake once and my fish fry and fries were soggy from sitting in the container. If you wait in line, they box it up right then. Head straight home...do not stop anywhere if you don't want a soggy fish fry! read more

Just what we wanted. Delicious. Will defiantly be back for more. Just a great classic fish fry dinner. Fresh fish, beer batter was perfect, not to heavy or thin. No bones or a single tough bite. Not greasy at all. French fries were good. 2 fish fry dinners came to $27 ($$ but worth it for a quality meal) Walk in order, no line, took 5-7 min and we were out the door, don't order ahead, no need and it's hot/fresh. Order came with lemon wedge, tartar sauce and forks. Selection of fresh fish limited but of high quality, (salmon wild and farm raised, tilapia, shrimp, haddock, scallops) next time I'll be getting a shrimp cocktail as well. When I walked in you refused all of my business at 6:40, by placing a sign up at the counter that you are not taking any more orders. You were out of EVERYTHING? Your staff were extremely rude and clearly the only thing that matters to them is rolling out of there by 7pm. The counter boy told me that if I wanted to order from this place, I would have to put in my order at noon!!!! I AM HAPPY TO TAKE MY BUSINESS ELSEWHERE AND I HOPE OTHERS DO THE SAME. I went here last night with my boyfriend and his sister last night. I checked this place out based on yelp reviews and a friend who recently went and raved about teh fish fry! I am so happy we went. For $11 you get a GIGANTIC piece of fish, fries and mac salad (or slaw or potato salad). It was so delicious. I was also super impress with the fact that they have Smelt! My father and I love smelt and we cannot find it cooked anywhere, you have to buy it and fry it yourself, but not at Captain Jims! The fish fry was huge, but the batter (beer batter) was really delicious also. It was crispy and not too oily. We got pieces that were fresh out of the fry and we don't live far, so there was much time for them to sit in the Styrofoam container and get soggy, which was great! The fries were standard fries, but still really good. The fish its self was very meaty. I hate when you get a fish fry that is all batter, you won't have this problem at Jim's. I would definitely recommend stopping here for a fish fry. I think the sign said they close at 7pm on a Friday so we got there just in time! next time I am going for the Smelt dinner! read more

To my surprise they also do a very good job with their fried clams, which are fried in strips. And though they carry a good selection of seasoning ingredients, rather pricey. They do have fresh fish and seafood for home cooking, but for the purchase of raw items for home preparation, one is far better off with the vastness of selection as well as fresh quality shopping at anyone of the Wegman's Super Markets that you will find located throughout the Rochester area and which are all, to my mind, by far the finest super markets you'll ever find anywhere. read more
