Top: fried clam strips and bits Bottom: hot buttered lobster roll
    The Uni 1.

I got a hot buttered lobster roll ($30) and fried clams. The clams were mostly breading. One of them had sand. The lobster roll was weird. Rather than chunks of soft white and red meat and visible claw meat, it was cut up big squarish chunks of white, brown, and rubbery meat. I'm sure it was lobster, but the preparation/composition was very different from other places. The lobster was overcooked and rubbery. There was not enough butter. It was in a plain hotdog bun rather than a toasted brioche bun. I had to add more butter. I think you should try a warm buttered lobster roll from Nolan's on Canandaigua ($25), the restaurant or the snack shack, to know what it should look and taste like. For this price the quality has to improve... I won't be back unless I see pictures that it's better. I was really really really looking forward to having a go-to lobster roll spot.

Fish & shrimp fry combo dinner

Fish & shrimp fry was very good, nice crispy fries and coleslaw. We also ordered 1/2 lb of fried oysters. They were ok for a frozen product, probably won't order again. We brought home smoked trout which was frozen also. That's sitting in our freezer. Would have liked to eat it with our dinner. Will go again sometime only for fish fry and shrimp.

Fresh fish, clean and cooked well. This was a first time visit, I have wanted to try this place for a while and so glad that I finally did. I highly recommend this place for those that enjoy a well done fish fry and friendly service. My dinner came with Scallops, shrimp, haddock, fries and coleslaw. Everything was delicious and fresh.

Captain Jim's Fish fries are always on point. Delish . The food never disappoints. The staff is friendly. We always get takeout and the food stays hot and crispy when we get it home. Packaging keeps it as if it was just served. I highly recommend that you get your ROC fish fry from Captain Jim's. Eat in or takeout.

If you're the type of person who doesn't care so much about the quality of fish you get when ordering a fish fry...And judge a fish fry by the type of fries you get with it....Captain jims is not for you! But if you're looking for the tastiest, most freshest, flavorful, non fishy fish fry....Then Captain Jim's is for you! You won't find a better in Rochester. You can also order your fish baked instead of fried..and with a baked potatoe instead of French fries. They also have a very nice selection of fresh fish to purchase for home..and other seafood as well. There is a modest dining room if you want to eat in...although I have always ordered to go. They do the fish fry's everyday, always from fresh...but Friday ..this place gets packed! So I recommend calling your order in. The people who work here are sweet as a peach too. Most places that do fish fry's in Rochester actually use cheap quality frozen fish...There really is only a handful that actually use fresh fish. I can also recommend Davies in North Greece. I always have gone back n fourth on who i like better...they are so similar..but I think Captain Jim's has them beat by just a scale ;)

I can always count on my fellow Yelpers to steer me towards tasty food. Captain Jim's is a good example of this. After being the consensus Yelper favorite fish fry in Rochester, I had to check it out. Captain Jim's is not much to look at from the outside or inside, but who cares when the main objective is good fish fry. The same goes for the plastic utensils and styrofoam plates. The service is friendly and prompt. The value is outstanding as $10 gets you a generous portion of fried fish, fries and coleslaw. I can't say I am a fish fry expert, especially in Rochester. My sole basis for comparison is Tap & Mallet's fish and chips. Jim win's the fish battle hands down, although I do prefer the fries at Tap & Mallet. Seemingly perfectly battered and fried, the fish is moist on the inside without being too greasy on the outside. The thin and crispy golden brown batter is truly something marvelous. Add some apple cider vinegar, a bit of ketchup and off to my happy place I go. The fries are nice and crispy, but not spectacular. The same goes with the coleslaw. It's a nice accompaniment to the fish, with some sweet and sour that refreshes your palate between bites of the fried fish. However, as individual elements, i've had better. Nevertheless, they serve to highlight the real star of the dish: the fish.

Great fish, prices seem slightly high but overall good spot. Hopefully ownership can make pick up more efficient, lines are very long.

tl;dr Go here for the awesome products and fantastic customer service, buy fish and seafood, post…read morepictures of what you make. How do these guys have no reviews?! Jess and Zach are the bomb diggity; I can't sing their praises enough! I have referred so many people to them and no one is ever disappointed. I look forward to coming here (almost) every week. The team is so friendly, payment options are easy, and, of course, the fish and seafood are all super fresh! Everyone is knowledgeable and even when it's crazy, Jess well spend a couple minutes talking to a customer to give recommendations or answer questions. They always have great energy and good specials (like giveaways and for holidays). You can even text her to have her put something aside for you so they don't run out before you get there (which happens often!). She knows me and knows my go-to (Atlantic salmon fillets), but she also knows I trust her and love a good deal (which she always has). The last time I went, I was eyeing her new prepared section (a game changer!) and she helped me in taking home three extra pieces than what I had planned to buy, with no regrets! The two pieces of parmesan encrusted salmon was a surprising preparation for me, but for $5 it was a no-brainer, and we quite enjoyed it (see picture)! I told her I wanted something quick for a lunch and she recommended the candy scallops (see picture)- again for $5. And again they were amazing. I had asked her what was her favorite in the case and she said it was the haddock with seafood stuffing. Ooh boy she was right. And because that put me at $15, she threw in an extra container of seafood stuffing! My (vegan) roommates may have hated me due to the lingering fish smell for days, but I'll never stop as long as Jess is my supplier!

The employees are really nice, and helpful. They can get pretty busy on Fridays, due to their fish fries. They are good. Good seafood has been difficult to find here in Rochester. But Davies has hit the mark for several years now, and if they clean it up, I will definitely plan to be back. We were there today for lunch. We ordered a fried clam strip dinner, and small lobster bisque. They called my name, bagged it up, and I was out the door. When I returned home, we found a fish fry in our bag, and not fried clam strips. We were not going to drive back and return it, so we split it and ate it. Disappointed is an understatement, not to mention I was kicking myself for not checking. The fish was good, French fries soggy, Mac salad, was fresh. Unfortunately, they added the Mac salad to the same container as the hot food. Be prepared for some of it to be cold and some hot, Mac salad on the soggy fries, etc.... I noticed today, The floor was sticky, and felt gross. The restaurant also smelled different, not sure why, it's hot or miss with seafood places. They were gearing up for their Friday fish fry's when we went in. We landed on the Friend clan strips because a friend recommended them to us. We were really looking forward to trying something new. Needless to say we were disappointed that we ended up with the fish fry, but at least we knew it would be good. The lobster bisque tasted sour, and we threw it away. The whole experience was disappointing, and subpar, compared to our usual experience. Which has not been our usual. However, since the start of spring we have been in 3 times, and all 3 times, were turned off with cleanliness issues. The sticky floor and wrong order, was kind of the camels straw. We went last week too, I was looking for specific fresh seafood to make Lobster Newberg with. The Haddock is always fresh, I also asked for scallops, and shrimp. I took the last of their shrimp, and to my surprise when she told someone the shrimp bin was empty, they took a bag out of the freezer, and added it. I was surprised, I thought that was always fresh, and not frozen, not the other way around. I also noticed that the man who handled the scallops was not wearing gloves, and after he went and handled something else. These cross contamination issues, sour soup, and sticky floors, is not usual for them, and my BF and I decided we will look for another place until they clean it up.
