This place was terrific. The atmosphere is romantic, and everything we got was absolutely delicious. It's also very legit Italian, if you're picky about that. If the soup of the day is tomato basil, don't pass it by--it's a super creamy delight, a total surprise. And the tiramisu is this darling, perfect little ball of coffee-bitter happiness, not too sweet. The service was what really set it apart, though. They stayed open late for us after I called, and our server was classy and attentive. My hubby and I stopped on a whim for lunch because I had heard good things and was excited to try. It was a stormy Friday afternoon, and we were the only diners. The ambiance is amazing-hits all the senses. Visually, you are transported out of Granger, IN. The music sets the mood, as does staff. Real or acting, the italian accents sound authentic and add to the experience. The smells are divine. Even touch-wood, brass, white linen table cloths...I could hardly wait to taste!! That's where the experience took a turn...sadly, and disappointingly for the worse. First came the bread-rolls, obviously reheated in the microwave because, while they had a nice crust, they were too hot to eat. I'm talking burn your fingers hot. Oh well, no worries, I thought. I hadn't come for the bread. First, we ordered Insalata Caprese-fresh mozzarella cheese made on site, tomato, olive oil and basil. The mozzarella was good, not amazing, but good. I enjoyed it. But what should have been the second star of the dish, the Tomato, failed. It's mid-July, and the weather has been hot, hot, hot and my tomatoes at home have come in and are amazing, so I was expecting a ripe, juicy, scrumptious Beef Steak Tomato but was served one just this side of plastic. It was forced red, under-ripe, tasteless tomato, likely from a chain food supplier vs from a local farm-which, by the way-are all around the area. It made me very sad. As our main course, we both ordered Linguini with clams. I ordered mine with white wine sauce, hubby ordered tomato sauce. Let me start by saying, we moved here from Rhode Island, and know and miss exceptional Italian food. We were both so hopeful we had found a place to go...but nope. The pasta was well cooked-al dente-and also made on site. But the sauce **heavy sigh** nope. I'll say the tomato was slightly better than the white wine, but it was nothing special. Tasted like lightly seasoned pureed tomato-the same tomato that the Caprese was made with- so edible, but very forgettable. And somehow the white wine sauce was less flavorful than the tomato sauce, which atleast had some spices. Lastly, the clams. I know better than to expect well cooked clams in the mid-west, but I did...and they were not. They were over cooked and slightly mushy...and, atleast to me, they broke a cardinal shellfish rule. I was served an unopened clam! We were the only people in the place, so there was no excuse like the kitchen being busy so they didn't catch it. Somehow, it was served. Unacceptable... and truly unexpected at a restaurant of this class. I know some debate that a clam being unopened after cooking does not mean dead before cooking, but to me, it is fact. Never, NEVER serve or eat unopened clams, quahougs or mussels. So, in conclusion, if you want delightful ambiance, but aren't so concerned with taste (or price as our food cost $44 for one order of Caprese and two linguni with clams) Capri will give you a great sensory experience...sans taste read more

Wonderful ambience and good service. One of the few local area restaurants where the music isn't blaring and you can have a conversation without shouting at your table mates. Second serving of hot rolls was very disappointing. Overbaked (almost burned) or microwaved or both, way too hot to handle and the crust so hard I had to use my napkin to crush it open. Freshly made pasta was perfectly al dente, cream based sauce not too heavy but a little bland. Otherwise very satisfying. Recommend and hope this place catches hold. It is truly a lovely experience beyond other offerings in the area. A little more skill with the food and this place will be my favorite go-to. read more

We were staying at the KOA next door and after a long drive took a walk to stretch out and literally walked into Capri. It is an oasis of unexpected architecture, interior design and remarkable food in South Bend IN worth going out of your way to find. Two of our adult children had just returned from a trip to southeast Italy with their foodie aunt and uncle and this meal was on par with what they had there. Yesterday my wife and I decided to try Capri. Upon entering we were greeted by the owner that escorted us to our table. The atmosphere was fantastic! High ceiling and dark woods along with a large selection of fine upscale wines and a well stocked bar. Our waiter was well versed on the menu and shared their specials. So many choices sounded good that choosing was difficult!. A variety of Frank Sinatra songs filled the room during our meal. The meal was delicious! I had a Veal dish with a wine / lemon gravy while my wife had an excellent chicken dish. Service was excellent. The restaurant is huge and was busy but the staff easily handled the guests. I got the idea that most people were Regulars. This is the best kept secret of Granger, Indiana. We will be returning to explore the many great meal choices. If you are looking for a restaurant that serves a large number of pasta dishes with red sauce this is not the place. read more

Small menu, high prices for the menu they have. Terrible sauces. Was told by one of the managers that they use fresh ingredients and everything is home made. 99% positive the tomatoes were canned tomatoes after he just told us everything was fresh. It would have been an upgrade if they opened a can of Chef Boyardee for us. I will bet money that when I am back up to Notre Dame in september next year, that they will not be there anymore. So if you want bad italian, get it while it lasts. read more

We visited several times when they first opened and food was just ok...so we went again after not having visited for a year and was pleasantly surprised how good the food was. They have changed the menu and the food was delicious! The hostess went by every table checking to see if people were happy, the tables have real tablecloths on them, wine menu is decent and the ambience is the best around. Hubby and I dined here for the first time to celebrate Valentine's Day the Friday after. Very nice ambiance, modern and yet rustic. Lovely fireplace although it was not burning that night which I thought was odd. Would have made it much more cozy and romantic. They don't have a "drink menu" which was also odd. Waiters reply was "we have a full bar, whatever you want I'm sure we can make it for you". A drink menu really would be nice, I love trying specialty cocktails that I don't have to "think up". Decent but pricey wine menu. A glass of Cabernet Sauv was $9. Their least expensive bottle was just under $40. Ordered calamari for an appetizer, a bit chewey but good with a side of marinara sauce. Caesar salads were good and our pasta entrees were good also. I understand they make their own pasta's which is impressive. Portion sizes are not huge which is fine with us because we "try" to eat healthy. Shared a spumoni for dessert which was fine. Overall a fine experience and we'll definitely go back again sometime! read more

The food was very very good, authentic Italian. The pasta top notch, aps and mains cooked well, sauces well seasoned, and the desserts quite delicious. The South Bend/ Mishawaka area should be glad to have this place around -- was in town to visit my parents. My partner and I are quite well travelled diners and found the service acceptable if a little uninformed. Waitstaff should be taught the proper direction to serve and when to clear. We were however lucky enough to have the waiter to ourselves for the majority of our dinner. Finally, the restaurant itself has quite a beautiful and impressive interior. read more

They've done a great job with decor but need signage and more training. We were a party of 6 and there were only 3 others when we walked in an they first seated us by the kitchen???? Appetizers were great the pastas were fair. Noodles tough, dry an sauce had no flavor. Same was true of the bread. We had oil but they had no seasoning for the oil. I really wanted the veal but all the main meals come with potatoes an you can't substitute for noodles. We all said we'd wait a while before going back. read more

Excellent food! I had the spaghetti bolognese. Simple, yet everything was so so good. The pasta was freshly made in house and you can taste it. The bolognese sauce was very lit. This was about the 5th time I came here. I was there with a group of 8 on a Sunday at 5 pm. We were the only table there besides one other 2-top which should've been our first giveaway. The wait staff was awkward and served us a rancid bottle of wine. They were apologetic and let us order another. One of our entrees didn't come out and when it arrived 7 min later, the pasta was completely raw. They offered a new entree and dessert on them. After the meal, the bill came and a bottle of wine that was listed as $37 was charged as $55. I will never ever eat there again. First, I will qualify myself and say that as a traveling consultant I've eaten at many mid and high-end restaurants across the country. It'd been a year between my visits to Capri which is local for me and some negative reviews popped up here on yelp. I remembered it being very good so I decided to visit again to see if things had gone downhill. We got takeout, so my expectations were not high for the food making it all the way home. In fact, the food was excellent - even sitting in a box for the 15 minute ride! While waiting for the food I had a glass of wine and I brought up the negative reviews to the new'ish manager and she was very attentive, personable and engaged describing the specific situations that resulted in the negative ratings. You can't beat honesty. We had the Chicken Valdostano and spaghetti Bolognese. Both were outstanding. We also got the caprese salad which had delicious fresh mozzarella that might have been made in house - it was so good. The price per plate is a little higher than I normally like to pay for takeout but the quality of the food matches the price. Top notch and five stars for this Granger gem. read more

Just had a delicious meal at Capri. In town for a Notre Dame event and the pasta was fantastic. Had the tagliatelle with chicken, asparagus and sun dried tomato in a cream sauce. This is the second time I've been to Capri. The first time we were there the service was extremely slow, we thought they were having a bad night so we gave them a second shot. Unfortunately it was a repeat of the first experience. The waiter was a bit more attentive but it took a long time to put an order in and we waited well over 45 minutes for the meal. We were celebrating two 65 year birthdays and asked for gelato. It took 20 minutes to get dessert. We were so disappointed. The restaurant was charming but I just don't have the patience to wait so long and have to ask every time I would like my water glass refilled. read more
