Great pizza! Tried one with sundried tomatoes. Excellent. Cute cozy little dimly lit place playing Frank Sinatra in the city. Works for me. Caprese salad was pretty forgettable, but the pizza made up for it. read more

Capizzi - Caprese was forgettable... I'd skip it. - Pizza Near Me - New York, New York

Oh yeah, I saw Marlo Thomas tonight at the West Side Theater, in a great play called Clever Little Lies, and I wish I'd taken her some Capizzi pizza as opposed to the red roses so many people dropped at the stage footlights!!! If you're under 40 you have no idea who I'm talking about, and that's not your fault! I walked into this place by chance and found the following: Brick oven, decent little house wine list, around the corner from a few theaters, and a positively charming exterior and interior. This was a bit of serendipity, as I was walking the streets while waiting to see above play at West Side Theater. The staff makes very good pies, and they treat you like the family (yes, in NYC, and at 9th & 43rd no less!) inside this quaint, wood-floored, tile-walled pizzeria. With all the Italian-heritage kitsch on the walls, I felt like I'd walked into another era, say 1946 or so. Nice. Oh yes, the food: really delicious pizza, great crust. The only way to order here is one-size personal pies, 12". Lots of delicious toppings, and clearly made with a passion for good pizza. I had the Prosciutto and Fungi (one of the menu specials); the server told me I had made a great choice and she wasn't kidding. I would order it again in a NY minute. In case you're wondering, I could not finish my 12" pizza, so for about 16 bucks, I had a great meal. Cozy, rustic, romantic, charming with a capital C, and lots of food satisfaction. My only advice, and the only thing that kept this review from 5-star, would be to offer up a few more items on the menu, like some creative and over-stuffed Italian sammies, etc.... read more

Capizzi's pizza is kind of like the iPhone. I didn't know how much I wanted it till I had it, and now I can't live without it. At first I was skeptical of all the Yelp reviews raving about Capizzi's pizza. How could it stand out so much from the rest? Finally curiosity got the better of me and I ventured out and had a taste. I had the Prosciutto and Arugula Pizza. It was not your typical ubiquitous New York style pizza. It's more Italian. Its crust was ultra-thin in the middle but fluffy towards the edges. Only a hint of sauce and cheese lay on the crust. Then mild tender prosciutto, arugula, and fresh grated cheese graced the top. Light and delicious, a perfect balance of flavors and textures. Magnifico! That's it. I could bore you with details about the forgettable chianti, the dimly-lit hole-in-the-wall wine bar atmosphere, the attentive service, the cash-only policy, blah blah blah. But it's really all about the pizza, and if you've never had it you really just don't know what you're missing. read more

I had such high hopes for Capizzi, so it pains me to write this 3-star review. The Setting: I liked the feel, although the mishmash of signs was almost comical. A vintage milk sign (picture rural Iowa) and a Dinkelacker beer sign (Stuttgart, Germany) both made me scratch my head and wonder where the "Italian" themed pieces had gone. The Food: The antipasti for 2 was pretty damn fantastic - A wide variety of pickled/cured/brined veggies combined with some Italian cheese and a nice selection of meats served on a big platter. The pizza on the other hand? Simply average. The wood oven was great, but the dough itself didn't have as much flavor as I was expecting. Also, it wasn't as chewy as I would have hoped. The sauce was also fairly run of the mill, and the toppings were minimal for the $17 it cost. The Staff: There were two gentlemen taking care of us on the evening we went in. The gut taking the order was nice enough, but he was irritated when I asked for the wine list. My bad, I didn't realize you didn't HAVE a wine list. It was my first time, cut me some slack. I think if their prices weren't as high, I would have been happier with the experience. When I spend $100 with tip on 2 pizzas, 1 shared appetizer (albeit a HUGE one), and 2 glasses of wine, I want to be wowed. read more

Great food and ambiance. Decided to come again for dinner too. Fast and friendly service.

This place exceeded my expectations. I was expecting Capizzi to be a hole in the wall place based solely on the fact that it was right next to port authority. This restaurant was very charming, and cozy. There were tons on wine bottles all around the restaurant. All the pizza's are personal size and gourmet. The sangria is excellent, and the tiramisu deserves air kisses. Customer service was noteworthy. EXCELLENT EXPERIENCE!!!!!!!! read more

Still a fan, but a word of advice for those who choose delivery. 1) If you go directly to their website (not Seamless), you get better deals. 2) Order salads (arugula salad is still amazing), but skip the pizza. It's tasty, but soggy and cold by the time it gets to you. Still a great pie, though. **updated to say that the owner contacted me and said they are working on a solution to prevent cold and soggy pizza. great to see an owner tuned into customer's feedback. Will definitely be back to this place...for delivery and dine-in. read more

What a fantastic experience! Our relatives were visiting NYC. They were in Times Square but of course, us locals didn't want to take them anywhere in that tourist trap. We tried Capizzi, based on the raving reviews. And oh boy, it really lived up to its hype! Our waiter was Andre. He was so kind and helpful. Very easy going, charming, and attentive. Even one of the chefs came out to talk to us about their process of cooking food and how everything was home made. At times I thought maybe it was overkill, but then I think that they're just really passionate about their work. And that's a great feeling to eat at a place where the staff really cares about the food and your experience. The food was delicious. We got a meat and cheese platter, a margherita pizza, a prociutto pizza, a prociutto and arugula pizza, and tiramisu. All was phenomenal. I don't normally like tiramisu but I had to try it when the waiter was sincerely talking about it's amazingness. And sure enough, I wish I ordered my own for myself. The whole thing, and one to go. I WISH! lol After our meal, we asked the Andre to take a family photo of us. To our surprise, he gave us Capizza chef hats to wear and let us stand by the oven for a photo op! Can you get much cuter than that?! Whenever our relatives visit now, we will always take them here. I'm sick of taking them to tourist hot spots like Grimaldi's where the wait is forever, the service is hit or a terrible miss, and where the pizza comes burnt. Those people aren't passionate about pizza. All they care about is getting you in and out, and more money money money. Capizza honestly showed me what it's like to have an outstanding restaurant experience. I've never been so pleased by the food and overall experience like this before. Thanks for creating a great family memory! read more

This was some of the best pizza I've ever had!! We ordered the delicious burrata appetizer (they were out of spinach rice balls or else we would've tried those) and the prosciutto and funghi (mushroom) pizza. IT. WAS. AMAZING!! The prosciutto was top notch and the cheese and sauce perfectly complemented each other. It's a fairly small place off the beaten path, but it was well worth it. I totally understand why it has so many great reviews on Yelp! We had to wait about 15 minutes on a Sunday night at 8:45 PM, but the staff were great about checking how many people were waiting outside and giving us updates on how much longer til we would be seated. It was absolutely worth the wait! If I lived in New York, this would definitely be one of my go-to spots. The employees speak Italian (one said he was from Sicily) and the restaurant has an authentic Italian family vibe with high quality ingredients. If you have a chance and are looking for something more tasty and different than the typical NYC pizza, this is your spot! read more

This was our first dive into New York pizza. Being from Chicago, we weren't looking to change our minds about which has better pizza - New York or Chicago - but we did want to see how it measured up. The debate between Chicago and New York pizza shouldn't even be a debate because they are so different. New York is good, but Chicago is where my pizza heart is! As for this place, the owner is very personable and comes around to talk to his customers. Humble man with a great attitude. I would go back just to talk to him. The pepperoni was wonderful, according to my husband... made in house and sliced thick. This place is tucked away in a corner of Hell's Kitchen and is worth the walk through the great New York streets. read more

How often do you take it back and dine in Grandma's kitchen? Quite literally in the case of Capizzi as this easy to miss Gem is a transposition of her original hospitality -- by this I mean all aspects. An original refrigerator, potent olive oil from Capizzi Italy itself and homemade hot pepper flakes are just a few authenticities that add to the restaurant's charming decor. Like I said, the place is easy to miss as I rarely venture south of 42nd/north of the 20s on Ninth Ave; however, I do suggest making the exception in this case. The pizza comes out perfectly crisped from Joe the owner's uniquely designed brick oven. The tomatoes are perfectly flavorful -- try the Nonna pie to appreciate them in full -- while the Mozzarella Di Bufala is so fresh and perfectly melted. Add some original toppings and you've got yourself a wonderful gourmet pie of heaven. I appreciated this down to every last subtlety, which includes the flat, non-screeching cutting board/plates to enjoy your slices on. Last but not least, the most impressive, most authentically important aspect of my dining experience at Capizzi, putting it above and beyond, was the service -- the culture is clearly first and foremost. The people working at this homestyle pizza kitchen are as friendly and hospitable as they come. From incredible service and hosting by the owner's daughter, Brianna, to the prize fighter Italian boxing champion pizza man himself, Floriano, this group goes above and beyond to make your experience as at home as can be. My sole experience at Capizzi tells me I'll be treated like family again next time and the many times I return thereafter. read more

When I finally decided to write this review (I usually don't write reviews, either good or bad experiences) I wanted to make sure it wasn't out of indignation and waited nearly 4 months to let ample time pass and see how we still felt about our experience at this establishment. As a birthday gift, my wife got me a trip to NY. We talked about how cool it would be to spend time together in NY since both of us never been. All in all NY was great, the people were great and we definitely want to go back and do all the things we didn't have time to do. So, to our experience. We went there on a beautiful Saturday evening for a romantic dinner at a classic pizza parlor. Inside, the place had that nostalgic feel. When we got there the hostess was very nice but the male waitor was rude, he didn't say hello and immediately began to up-sell us (like a used car salesman) on their most expensive personal pizzas, which I actually went for on his recommendation. My wife a vegetarian went for the Margarita and Basil (one of their least expensive) and he appeared upset by her decision. We waited an extraordinary long time to served our food and were served after others that came in some time after us. When he finally served us our food, he had a dejected look on his face a just tossed the food and left in a very unprofessional manner. It was so bad that we thought about just paying and leaving without eating it. During dinner, not once did he come by to check on us, and it wasn't very busy. After 25 minutes we finished our food, and he never came by to ask us how things are or if we wanted water while asking the guests next to us. The pizza was average but not sure if it justified the premium price. When we asked for the check he came by with that same dejected look on his face and we waited another 10 minutes or so to settle up. What we hoped would be a wonderful dinner in NY,turned out to be a dud. Not sure if this individual is a fair representation of the restaurant but his lack of professionalism was so bad that every time we talk about our trip to NY,we remember it. My wife and I are not high maintenance individuals and usually give people the benefit of the doubt. The only redeeming quality about the place was the very nice hostess and the decor. We heard so many great things about this place but what we got was a $55 bill for two personal pizzas and a jerk of a waitor. In summary, the food was average and the service was very bad. read more

I had a standard 12" margherita pie and it was easily the best personal pie I had ever had. The crust was beautifully thin, perfectly cooked with a fantastic balance of cheese to sauce. The atmosphere was quaint, rustic and intimate; great for a quick romantic bite to eat on the west side of Manhattan. The strawberry tiramisu was amazingly fluffy, light and an excellent complement to the dinner. Service was great, and very authentically Italian. read more

My roommates and I have walked by this restaurant so many times since it is only 4 blocks away from our apartment. We always say we're going to try it because it looks adorable from the outside but we never had a chance. We finally went on Sunday night around 8PM. I already had unlimited beer and wings @ Calico Jack's for the Bills game (Let's go Buffalo!) so I wasn't too hungry but came along for the company. The other three girls ordered the #2 on the classic combos menu (Sausage, Sweet Roasted Peppers & Onions). I was going to order a small appetizer like soup or something, but they didn't really have a great selection. So I ended up asking if I can combine their homemade ice tea and lemonade together and sipped on that during dinner. At first, two of the girls ordered a glass of wine each (shiraz and pinot noir) then realized we can order bottles (they are against the wall w/ prices and names written on little chalkboards). We called the waiter over and asked to get a bottle instead, based on their prior orders, he recommended a wine that was between the shiraz and pinot noir which the girls loved! Since I didn't actually have any of the pizza, I asked my friend for her thoughts. She said it was just okay, although she claims that it takes a lot to excite her palette...but she likes sausages...so she didn't mind it. Between the 3 girls and the large pizza, we ended up only taking one slice of pizza to go. The waiters were really attentive and they serve you your pizza! They bring out these little ceramic circles that act like plates and when they see that you are almost done with your slice, they automatically come over and ask if you'd like to be served another one. During our meal the pizza chef came out and asked if we liked our meal. He was adorable! We told him that we lived in the area and always wanted to come try out the food and we were glad we finally made it. Towards the end of the meal, the waiter brought over two free desserts! A cannoli and tiramisu! SOO GOOD plus it was FREE! We're not sure why we got it since none of the other tables did, but decided it was because we told him we lived in the area. We're definitely thinking this could become our go-to place in the neighborhood! P.S. It's cash only! There's a Citi on 42nd and 9th and a Chase in the Duane Reade if you're looking for ATMs. read more

We got hungry in our hotel room and decided that we wanted pizza. We did some research and found that place that had good reviews. We ordered online and had the pizza delivered to our hotel. The process was easy and the option to give a tip online is a nice plus! It was about 10.30pm when we ordered and the pizza got there way faster than we were expecting it. It was a really good "european/italien" style pizza! And the price was very decent! read more

Tasted like cardboard. We ordered delivery one day because we were craving pizza and had wanted to try this restaurant out for awhile. We got the pizzas in about a half hour and when we bit into them, they were semi warm and flavorless. We finished eating them, only because they were kind of pricey and we didn't want to waste the $30 we spent on two tiny personal pizzas. read more

Who knew there would be such a great pizza restaurant near shady Port Authority!! Its such a cute place and they love to play old romantic love songs. For appetizers, we had the Spanish Rice Balls (you get 4 balls total). They are homemade fresh everyday! It was funny when we ordered our pizzas. They are 12 inches in size, so I recommend getting one pizza per person. We picked one of the combination pizzas combo #1 (pepperoni, portobello mushrooms and onion) which was absolutely delicious. The onions were caramelized to perfection, soft and sweet at the same time. We also picked another combination pizza combo #2 (sausage, sweet roasted peppers and onions) and the waiter told us that it was no good. We asked him for recommendations and he suggested the Euro pizza, which consisted of mozerlla, soppressata (Italian dried salami), sundreid tomatoes and fresh basil. It was pretty good, the sundried tomatoes were delicious but I still liked pizza combination #1 better. I wish I had more space for desert but eating a 12 inch pizza was quite filling. Maybe next time I'll skip the appetizers so that I can try the deserts, which are homemade. read more

One of those rare 5-star type places!! Certainly as good as it gets. I am a stickler when it comes to authentic delicious fresh Neapolitan pizza. This place has it! FRESH FRESH and wow so well made. Small little spot across from Port Authority. A bit hidden, nothing loud on the outside but totally worth it. Always a wait for dinner, sometimes a small wait for lunch. Margherita pies were on point - fresh mozzarella and the perfect amount of basil. Prosciutto and Arugula pizza was arguably the best one. Can't wait to try the others when I go back for a THIRD time. MUST MUST try. Super friendly staff and chef as well. read more

I just had some pretty remarkable pizza at a little place called Capizzi's on 9th by the Port Authority (if you're in town, I suggest it). Nothing too special, just a little old school pizza place, serving up wood fired brick oven pizza. Great decor on the walls, too, a little bit of everything contributing to a wonderful retro feel. But the pepperoni induced a chronal flux in my taste buds. Yeah, that's right, this was time travel pepperoni. It took me back to childhood with the good pepperoni my grandfather used to get from little holes in the wall when he worked in NYC. Actually, good doesn't begin to describe this heavenly spiced meat. This was REAL pepperoni. Thick, spicy and, as my wife said, will make you realize what GOOD pepperoni is. We also had great servers, who attended to our every need and made us feel welcome. The place played good music as well. I must express my sincere love for this place, and I will be back. read more

My wife and daughter drove down to NYC from Buffalo, NY this weekend. We stopped in here after reading some really good reviews online. WOW the reviews don't even do this little gem justice. It was absolutely amazing! The food, staff and everything about the place. The music playing was great and they were letting patrons try to flip pizza dough in the air. It was an awesome experience and the food was made with high quality authentic Italian ingredients. Real motz cheese that was so flavorful. My 10 yr old daughter can be picky about ALL of the food she eats and she said it was "the best pizza she ever had!" The pizza was cooked in a wood fired oven served crispy and slightly charred that just added to the already melt in your mouth flavor. Not a far trek from Times Square in the Hells Kitchen area of NYC, this place is not to be missed. You won't be disappointed! read more

I took my mom here for a casual birthday dinner before a show and we both loved it. The pizza here is delicious. Our pick was the Messina, which was topped with San Marzano tomatoes, garlic, roasted eggplant, olive oil, Parmesan and Pecorino cheeses. It was excellent and you could tell the ingredients were very fresh. We had a couple glasses of Sangria that mom raved about, but that I was less than thrilled with since it was overly sweet and primarily fruit juice. For dessert we had the Tiramisu. They were kind enough to throw a candle on there and write a nice Happy Birthday message for my fabulous Mother. We both enjoyed ourselves and Mom proclaimed, "Best birthday dinner ever!" Came here because of a Scoutmob deal with a couple of friends and I can't stop thinking about their thin crust, Italian style pizza. Mmmm...it's good stuff. They have such a good selection of toppings and their caprese isn't bad either. It's such a cute little spot, perfect for a low-key date. 3.5 stars. I need to get tough! Came here on a Tuesday night around 8; it's small, but with cozy, cute decor and some patrons trickling in after. I'm sure they had good wine as they had many bottles lined around the walls..I loved the dim lighting. Every night, they have specials and the waiters are sincere (albeit slow), and explains the menu if you haven't been here before... I wanted to like this place a bit better, though, the food came in a little short. Perhaps it's because at heart, I am a pasta fan, not a pizza fan. And perhaps because I prefer... more hearty pizza? Certainly, Capizzi offers traditional-style Italian pizza..very thin crust (a bit dry), but I'm talking PAPER THIN which isn't for everyone. The crust is super fresh (and homemade- which is the old endearing vibe of the place), but with all of the toppings, the pizza barely hangs on. My friend and I split the arugula salad- yummy with arugula, green apple, dried cranberries, walnuts, cucumber and delicious goat cheese. $9.50. We then created our own pizza- starting with the basic Margherita (which we didn't taste much), topped with whole garlic (yum), mushrooms (didn't taste much), caramelized onion (meh again), pancetta (the real cured meats way). They give you ample parm cheese and red crushed pepper, which helped bring things to life. The pizza is quite small though- perfected for two girls (my friend and I) but some fellas might want more..especially since the pizza as a whole is pretty light; not too heavy, greasy or cheesy (a good thing!). We only had two slices each. Apparently there is a coal oven in back which gives it that dry flavor. We shared the panna cotta for desert, and this is where the stars really plummet. The panna cotta was a) tiny, and b) didn't seem too fresh; it was very gelatinous and more like a flan, and NOT creamy, and vanilla-y, the way panna cota should be..boo. We used a ScoutMob deal which gave us $15 off for dinner, which came down to $17ish per person after tax and tip. Perhaps worth a return to try the various other pizzas, but would not necessarily go out of my way.. only if I was in the area, and well, am feeling light pizza. read more

After reading the reviews, the good and the bad, decided to give this place a shot as it's close to our Airbnb. Super good pizza, super accommodating (as I have an allergy to dairy), really cute traditional interior. I can see how some people might say the service was bad, as the server could have been a bit more attentive, but honestly he was busy. The restaurant has about 10 tables and the server was on his own to serve them all. For the hour or so we were there (830pm-930ish) the restaurant was full the whole time. The server was seating, serving AND clearing tables constantly. Kudos to him. A bit pricy but nothing unexpected as the toppings are fresh and the pizza is good. One small is enough for a meal. Sangria was also pretty good! read more

Capizzi - Pizza Near Me - New York, New York

Staying at hotel nearby, we ventured out to look for something to eat and we decided to go for Italian food. This restaurant is homey and welcoming and having a old fashion wood burning oven was the deciding factor. We ordered the Pizza dell Nonno (San Marano tomatoes, 3 cheeses with anchovies), the Margherita, and the Euro (sopressatta and sun dried tomato with basil) All 3 arrived as hoped for which to me means the bottom is cooked and the top is blistered which would be typical of a super hot wood fired oven. yes Yes and YES! What a great flavorful pizza dinner we had! We finished off with some cannoli's which were good and fresh. this is a wonderful, family style and unpretentious restaurant. It seemed i was eating in my grand parents basement enjoying great food and laughter. pricing is reasonable We also enjoyed the spinach rice balls but they are somewhat expensive at $8.95 for a dish of fried rice balls. They were the right amount of crispiness with the gooey center. Come on Joe make them $4.95 this is a great family spot as well as a nice date night spot. I am not sure why they call this area hell's kitchen but i did visit the oven in the back to chat with the pizzaiolo and didn't find any hell in their kitchen but a lot of love and warmth and the smoky odors of a oven read more

A co-worker wanted to come here for lunch, raving about the pizza. Three of us shared two combination pizzas and it's true, they are really good. Thin crust, fresh and yummy ingredients and the place was cute and cozy feeling. My only complaint is that two pizzas barely fed the three of us, and the bill was high for that. I really wanted more pizza, and to try a dessert or something, but the pocketbook would not allow. I recommend this place though, a suprisingly good find near Port Authority. read more

I landed in the city exhausted and famished. After a train trip into the neighborhood where I was to meet up with my friends I found out they were still at work. In need of food and shelter from the winter cold, I basically dodged into the first place I found... and what a serendipitous dodge that was! The wait staff was immediately friendly and welcoming. We chatted for a bit before I ordered a beer and settled into the menu. Everything looked delicious and I settled on a pizza with a little advice from the waiter. It was everything I wanted from my memories of living out east. As I chowed down on my pie, I took some time to look around the restaurant. It had the feel of a place that has been there for ages and passed from father to son. The black and white pictures on told me that if that was not the case, the owner was trying to create the perception that he was from a long line of pizza chefs anyway. The brick oven seemed to be dishing out round bits of happiness as the customers filled the dining room and not a bad word was to be heard around. Great pie, great service, great atmosphere. That is my trifecta for a five! read more

Fantastic food, intimate atmosphere, and exceptional service. The main pizza chef Joeseppi was absolutely welcoming, down-to-earth, and ensured that we had a great time. I visited the restaurant with my parents and 6 other out-of-town guests and they all enjoyed the dinner and encouraged me to write this review. I definitely recommend giving this place a try. It's about 2 or 3 blocks away from Times Square on W. 40th/8th. I don't want to name any other travel/review sites in particular, but if you do your research, you'll see that this place is highly recommended by more than just the Yelpers. I've also added more details about both the food and service quality below. Food: High quality brick oven pizza. The crust has an airy texture to it, yet is not burnt on the bottom. They use mozzarella cheese not provolone, which gives it a much better flavor. The Roma tomatoes are used instead of tomato paste. And they use roasted peppers and oregano, which are hanging in front of the oven where they pick them to use for every pizza pie. I recommend the Loaded pizza which has pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, garlic, peppers, and oregano. Also, the Sicilian eggplant pizza is phenomenal as well. The caprese salad is great and both the tiramisu and cannolis for dessert are amazing. Service: I don't know if it's because we were a big party or not, but the waiters were actually serving us slices and ensured that none of our plates were empty throughout the entire dinner. They refilled water regularly and did not try to rush us in any way. They didn't push us to expensive wine or recommend ordering more food than we needed. And as I stated earlier, Joeseppi adds some flair without going over the top. He takes pride in his job and made sure that we all had a great time. He got along with my father so much that he let him pose for photos in front of the brick oven with a Capizzi chef hat on (and we all can agree that any Kodak moment for us tourists adds a little something special to any experience). read more

Cute and simple Italian pizzeria on 9th in Hells Kitchen. Pizza was brilliant, but be warned that this is proper Italian wood-fired pizza, not NYC style. That means it needs to be eaten there and then, and it wouldn't be great for take away as it could go soggy. We had the pizza specials of the day, and the flavour combinations were great. Accompanied by some nice Montepulciano red and fantastic, polite, efficient service Finished it off with an amazing tiramisu. But beware the Sangria, it is delicious and seriously potent... This place is just about the opposite of what you would expect to find across the street from Port Authority. The pizza is crispy-crusted and prepared with authentic ingredients, the ambiance is unimpeachable, the waitstaff is friendly and accommodating... if you're willing to brave the unruly cast of neighborhood regulars prowling the sidewalks outside, Capizzi's is a true find. A few notes: The menu is concise and to the point. If you don't plan on ordering pizza, I wouldn't bother going. The air conditioning occasionally quits working. You can either embrace this (and drink more wine), or allow it to dampen your experience. The prices are a bit steep ($20+ per pie). But you get what you pay for. All in all, this is a terrific joint that I will continue to frequent as long as I live in the neighborhood. read more
