*Submitted on behalf* I consider the day I called Bill Shelton at Capitol Tree Care to be one of the luckiest days in my life. Bill was gracious, charming and very understanding of my predicament. He set up a time to come and look at my very old and very, very dead Oak. My wonderful neighbor allowed Capitol Care Tree to drive a Bucket Truck and Shredder into his yard so the the crew could access the tree, as it was too dangerous for anyone to climb. The crew was so quiet, no music and no loud voices, Each man had a job to do and he made sure that he did it. When they were all finished, they cleaned up my neighbors yard. If there were not a big hole in the sky were my tree used to be, you would never know that anything had happened. I have worked with three different tree companies in the past. Responsive service and professional work. They removed a massive spruce that hit my house during a storm and did so promptly and with tremendous skill and care. When additional above grade stump and root structure was revealed after rain washed away the excess dirt pulled up by the stump, they returned and completed the job to perfection. read more

Wish I could actually give a review of the actual service of this company, but I first contacted them months ago regarding the simple removal of a tree in my front yard. Since then, I've been bounced around from numerous agents. Then, about a month ago, I randomly received an emailed estimate from them. Apparently, the estimator came to my house, looked at the tree, and then never rang the door to let me know they were there. That's a shame because I had numerous questions. I called and emailed the company saying I was interested in hiring them but had questions. This time, it took a week - but I did get a call from somebody. Now the story was that they're very busy, but they'll be in touch. Another month goes by, and I call again to be told "call the main office during the morning" and ask them but "we've been busy and a lot of projects have been falling through the cracks." Sigh. I'm literally begging to give these folks work. Unless you have a way to actually communicate with these folks that gets them to respond I'd say pass. Maybe they're great at tree removals. I can't say enough great things about Capitol Tree Care and the entire team. Dawn in the office is helpful and responsive, Bill Shelton came out quickly to assess our tree and advise on removal, they handled the permitting process, and the team removing the tree and then later grinding the stump were very skilled, efficient, and friendly. We are in DC and our tree was about 44in in diameter and in our backyard up against the fence on our alley. It was showing some problematic issues and sure enough the trunk was rotting out. After quickly taking the tree down, they were able to come back out (once we got a break in the rain) and lift the stump grinder up and into our fenced yard. The most impressive part is the stump was right against the fence and they didn't even scratch it. They protected it and were meticulous in how they were placing the grinder. If you need an opinion on your tree, and/or removal especially in DC where you need to navigate permits, you can rely on Capitol Tree Care. read more

We had a nuisance stump in our DC row house front yard that kept sprouting branches. It was a small job in multiple senses: one company I contacted said our yard was too small for their stump grinder! Thankfully I found Capitol Tree Care who were willing to take on the small space and small job. We weren't in a hurry to have it done so they fit us in as their schedule permitted, but one day I came home from work to find a nice fresh stump-less patch ready for landscaping. We had at least half a dozen tree companies come to estimate. Most said the back yard was impossible or cost prohibitive, many said we had to have the phone lines removed before they would come near it. One compnay we hired came and left the same day because they wanted to put their heavy machinery on our new flagstones and said they couldn't be responsible if it broke... Glad that brought us to Capitol Tree Care. They had the most reasonable quote, communicative staff on scheduling and then a really great team that stayed late worked around multiple issues presented that day! Highly recommend. read more

This review doesn't have to do with an appointment but rather the worst customer service I've seen in a while. I called two weeks ago and left a total of 4 messages. Finally got a call back (4 days later) and was told someone would come out to our house that Monday. A week later, 5 more calls and nothing. Bill Shelton is a certified arborist so he is not just some guy who tells his team to cut down trees. Aside from getting rid of a branch as big as a tree, he gave us important recommendations concerning the other trees that shows rotting. I had a 5 year old maple tree die in my front yard. I chopped it down and got it down to a stump. Then I spent four hours digging out and chopping at the stump with the best tools I had. I realized that I needed either better tools or professional help to get the stump out. The next day, my neighbor had Capitol Tree Care remove an overgrown pine tree from their front yard. I can't speak too much for that job except to say that they did a wonderful job bringing the tree down without making a mess or damaging any of my flower garden right next door (and largely underneath the tree). My neighbor seems happy with the job and mentioned it was way cheaper than other quotes. The reason I am bothering to yelp it up is that I happened to strike up a conversation with the crew of Capitol Tree Care as they were finishing up the job next door. I got some consultation on the best method to remove the stump. Then, to my surprise a guy from the crew grabbed a pick ax and said he'd work for five minutes on the stump in my yard. After about ten minutes of hard labor with two guys, the stump was out! They even took away the stump. I gave the guys some cash and thanked them profusely. If they worked this hard for a random dude next door to a client, they must do a great job on regular jobs. The crew was clearly a professional bunch and I'd hire them on a future job. read more

Bill was so helpful and gracious when we were required to enlist an arborist to oversee a Pepco dig at our DC house. We then had his company prune and care for the tree we were working to save. They were friendly, efficient and affordable. I've recommended the company to friends several times since. read more

Bill and his team were incredible! We had a large tree in our front yard that was rotting. Bill worked with me and with the DC Department of Urban Forestry to get the appropriate permits fast and from phone call to tree coming down took less than two weeks. We simply could not have done that without Bill's help navigating the DC process. The price he quoted was also very fair. On the appointed day, the team worked quickly and in a very thorough manner to get the tree down! They know the difficult DC permitting process and will make it happen. Called to see if they do work in my area, which the man answering said they would not come out as far as I am for the amount of work I have. That is fine. The issue was that I believe he gave me the names of two companies to try calling closer to my area but when I tried to verify the two names he would not repeat himself. I am partially deaf and had issues understanding the names he gave me in our quick conversation. When I tried asking him to repeat he would just say, have a nice day...take care...etc.. and he hung up. He was only willing to speak with me enough to determine if he could make money off of me. That's not the type of company I want to work with. read more

Great experience! They came out with in a day or two to give me an estimate, and were the only company out of three that was actually willing to do our complicated job. One of the other companies tried to talk me out of having our stump removed and the third just got me my estimate two days after the stump had been taken care of. The stump was on the property line and sandwiched between two portions of fencing and a deck. They did a wonderful (and fast) job and ground the stump down far enough so we could rebuild our fence and put in a new footer. They also cleaned up as best they could and carried away most of the remains of the tree. read more

Had lightning strike a very large white oak in our backyard in densely populated DC neighborhood. Tree didn't fall, but split and was in danger of destroying many houses nearby. Needed a quote for removal very quick -- Bill Shelton of Capitol Tree came in with the lowest one within 48 hours, and tree was gone within a week. Esp. impressive as the job demanded permitting and difficult positioning of a crane in alley. Great company -- do not hestitate to use! read more

Sadly, I cannot give a great review of this DC based company which is unfortunate because I live and work in DC so I try to do business with DC companies first. I found Capitol Tree Care on Yelp! and spoke with a man named Frank who educated me on trees and their root system. He referred me to DDOT Urban Forestry to confirm what can and cannot be removed from my front yard and once we got that squared away, he came out and marked where he would start removing the roots. Unfortunately, he could not perform the job as promised because at first he told me their big grinder was in the shop, so an appointment was made a week later since he was down to just one grinder. However, when I textd Frank to confirm our appointment for the next day, he responded that their other grinder was now in the shop. I even called him back and left him a message to look into renting a grinder at Home Depot but he never called me back which made me feel like I didn't even matter as a potential customer. His estimate of $600 seemed reasonable although I did not get alot of estimates so I don't know if this is fair or not. I'm sure he would have done a fine job had he had the proper tools, but I couldn't wait for his grinders to get out of the shop so I moved on. Which leads me to a wonderful experience I recently had with Lopez Tree Services of Falls Church (see my review for Mr. Lopez and his excellent crew!). Lopez Tree Services not only removed the hideous tree roots from my front yard but they also cut down a huge limestone boulder in my front yard which no longers protrudes through my grass and he laid down new sod all for a reasonable price (note: Mr. Lopez estimate for removing tree roots was $150 less than Capital Tree Care!). read more
