I am not sure if there is a single Yelp entry for the system, Capital Bikeshare. I write to explain…read moremy experience. It is positive to date. I recommend this. The background. I am in my late 50s. I do not live in Washington, D.C. My elderly father does though. So I am in and out all the time, checking up on him (he still lives on his own). I am experienced riding a bicycle in the city. I have owned an e bike (it stopped working, the Van Moof; I loved it when it ran, but build quality was an issue). I also rented regularly in San Francisco when I lived there, and do so intermittently in New York City where I reside now. I have had good experiences and bad, including an issue where part of a bike belonging to the defunct Uber system fell out in an intersection, and the customer service agent told me I was lucky I didn't die and offered me a $2 refund, which I thought was rather rude, prompting me to interact with the General Counsel's office to no avail -- moral of the story is you won't get much by complaining, even if you are in the right and quite polite. All told, I am confident I have taken at least three dozen rides, maybe four dozen rides, with at least three other companies, in two major metropolitan areas besides DC. I also support mass transit and alternative transit. I regularly ride the bus, and I am irked by people who assume I would not do that, because they are projecting their sense of privilege (it is apparent from their disdain they would not ride the bus) on me. I also run commute as much as I can, and I previously did that on a regular basis (three days a week, 4.5 miles, just one way; then MUNI back). That is not to brag about virtue. Don't trust anybody who touts their own morality. In any event, Capital Bikeshare seems to have worked out the problems with this service. They have lots of bikes. That have lots of locations (including one about a quarter mile from where we stay and another on the side of the train station where I need to go). They have an acceptable number of e bikes in the fleet. The maintenance is much better than pre-pandemic with their rivals. (I am opposed to the dockless networks. Those result in the inevitable problem of bikes scattered willy nilly on sidewalks and where they pose a hazard.) The annual fee is reasonable. I am planning three trips in the next two weeks, early in the morning before Metro starts running, to Union Station. If I do as I intend, the amount saved over a motor vehicle ride share will offset the cost. I figure at 4am, the traffic will not be a great hazard (though the drivers out will include a disproportionate number of people who, given the late/early hour, probably pose a risk).

Once I get the chance to experience the full monty, so to speak, I will most likely have a higher rating. From what i have seen, these bikes get used nearly every day. The people using them seem very pleased. This coming Saturday 13th or Sunday the 14th should be a good day to ride a bike.(Weather permitting of course)

The bikes were in excellent condition, and the store employee took extra time and care to ensure we were comfortable with the bikes' operation, including providing bike locks and adjusting seats as needed. The location of the store was perfect for our group as a connector bike path was directly in front the store and only a block from the W&OD trail. Picking up the bikes about 11:00 am and returning around 4:30 (just under 6 hours) gave us the flexibility we needed. We only had one suggestion to remember to inform us that the bikes needed to be reset with a button under the back taillight to turn the power on again after being idle during our lunch hour. However, a quick call to the store quickly fixed this and we were back on our way, no problems.

Not only did they provide me with some complimentary grease, their veteran team of mechanics were not only extremely patient and friendly with all the customers but were professional and efficient in their skills to complete the task as well as offer explanations on anticipating future issues such as tightening the handbrake cables after a few rides. Despite being around since 1957 and having the business passed down a generation now with over 10 locations in the area, it's nice to see they are not resting on their laurels since the staff very much had a mom/pop sensibility with good mix of older and younger staff and they seem to be very familiar with regular customers chatting with them in a first name basis and asking about other family members, like a neighborhood bartender and his/her regular patrons. I highly recommend Robert, who is sharp as a tack and has even made several YouTube videos posted on troubleshooting bicycle issues at home when he worked with a previous company. Highly recommended for all your biking needs.

I had been less than enthusiastic since our last tandem bike jaunt in DC left me ragged and looking forward to the end. We rented a tandem bike from a known rental in DC; the bike was rickety and took effort even on the completely flat route we were on. My GF found Pedego and opted for the tandem electric bike. This was a 180 degree experience from the other rental company jn DC. The owner was friendly, attentive, enthusiastic and really made us feel welcome. He knows his bikes gave us a quick run down that made us feel comfortable. The bikes are impeccabley maintained and he's thought of everything including helmets, storage pouch, bike lock, flat tire kit etc. He was even extremely well versed on the route to Mt. Vernon. Every pointer he gave us was spot on. We made it to Mt. Vernon and enjoyed food, history, and culture. The way back was fun since the bike did all the work, electric is the way to go for tandem bike long hauls. I plan on coming back to buy some accessories for my own fat tire e-bikes. This was a memorable experience that was easy and affordable.

Immediate Attention Required - Customer Treatment at Fairfax Location…read more I'm reaching out to bring a serious issue to your attention regarding your Fairfax location. I recently visited the store at the start of the spring season--typically a great time for cycling and community engagement. My intent was simple: get air in my bike tires. My initial interaction with a staff member was excellent--welcoming, helpful, and exactly what you'd expect from a community-focused business. That experience changed completely when your service manager became involved. The interaction quickly escalated into behavior that was demeaning, hostile, and completely unprofessional. I was spoken to in a way that was both disrespectful and humiliating--something I can honestly say I have never experienced in my 64 years. More concerning, I was told I was not welcome in the store. Let me be direct: that is not a customer service issue--that is a leadership issue. This individual represents your brand in the local community, and based on this interaction, does so in the worst possible way. Behavior like this doesn't just impact one customer--it erodes trust, damages your reputation, and pushes business away from what should be a community anchor. I also want to highlight the contrast: your frontline employee created a positive, welcoming experience. That tells me the culture at the ground level has potential--but it is being undermined by management behavior that is completely out of alignment. I am asking for two things: A review of this incident and the conduct of the service manager Clear confirmation of how you intend to address this moving forward I would strongly encourage you to take this seriously. Experiences like this don't stay isolated--they get shared, and they influence where people choose to spend their money. I look forward to your response. --Mark E
