I will start by saying I'm not a huge Mexican food lover, but I can find a burrito fixed my way in most. But, I will say, Cantina Del Sol was a really huge surprise while passing through Tupelo. They have a lunch buffet to rival any buffet anywhere. They have it all, from quesadillas to all kinds of meats, salads, fruits, deserts and much more. We had every kind of dish imaginable, with pork carnitas, steak, chicken, fajitas, amazing rice/beans, pork taquitos, enchiladas, quesadillas, chili rellenos, fresh chips, guacamole, various salsas including mango, sour cream, fresh churros, fresh fruits, hard Blue Bell ice cream and so much more! What a great experience and such a nice surprise. Great service, nice ambiance and clean bathrooms. It was a bit of work to get to from I-22 but GPS is accurate. Our first time here was in January of this year while we were visiting family. We came back for a birthday this weekend (October 17-19). We dined in on Friday night and came back for the buffet on Saturday. MARVELOUS both times. Servers at night are attentive and never let the tea glasses get below half. In a word - FABULOUS!!! Their food is so spot on delicious and authentic! Not only are the items you order off the menu spot on, but wow can they rock a buffet!!! Cantina Del Sol is our go to place in Tupelo! This is by no means your typical Tex-Mex joint!!! The restaurant is clean and so beautifully decorated. Staff greets you the moment you walk in and are super friendly and quick. We've been there several times (only now remembering to do my review). You simply can't go wrong ordering any of their street tacos with fresh onion, cilantro, cheese and salsas on the side (boyfriends fav). He recommends the barbacoa, el pasture and chorizo. My favorite - the carnitas. Everything is so full of flavor and the carnitas are so moist! Love the seasoned chips and assorted salsas. I'm not sure what they put in their refried beans but they are delightful! Most Mexican restaurants are about the same but this one is a step above the others. The restaurant itself is very clean and well maintained. They have a small bar, but many tables around for guests. 5-6 beers on draft at a great price. The food was spectacular, everything came out quickly and the vegetables were fresh. The chicken was well seasoned and the food portions were large. I thought that everything was priced fair for the quality and amounts of food you get. Service was great as well. Really great Mexican food. We had all of the dips and they were all very good. The guacamole was very fresh and extra thick. I would definitely get this again. The queso con carne was also very good. The fresh vegetables were firm, (firm enough to withstand being reheated when I eat the leftovers later). The salad was simply iceberg lettuce with a few toppings and certainly wasn't the highlight of the meal, but it added variety on the plate. I came again for the first time in a few months last night, and I was thoroughly disappointed. It was a steady Thursday night where the crowd was moving out by the time my friend and I came in. Our server was not great by any means necessary. It took her a bit to fully get us situated with chips, salsa, queso, and our drinks. After we got our food (which was disappointing in of itself) she checked up on us once and said she would get me a refill before disappearing for half an hour. Cantina wins major points with their complimentary seasoned tortilla chips and a trio of salsas (each person gets their own) that were delicious. My husband ordered the barbacoa tacos that looked delicious with fresh onion, cilantro, cheese and salsas on the side - he just said the beef needed more seasoning. I had the chicken chimichanga. The refried beans were a bit different, but ok. Rice was fine but could have used more flavor. And the chicken in my chimichanga definitely could have used more flavor. Having moved here from the left side of the country, we've had a hard time finding excellent Mexican cuisine. This place cured that problem. Starting with the SEASONED chips and THREE different styles of salsa they serve when you are seated to the hot, fresh and tasty food offered, you can't go wrong here. They do offer an all you can eat lunchtime buffet until 2:00PM, it's better than okay and worth the money but, again, the table served food is superior.
