    Baked winter squash toast
    Sharon H.

I'm always looking for tapas places, and will definitely add this spot into our mix! It's located on the side of the Springline complex, right across the street from Son and Garden. They have outdoor and "lounge" seating. In terms of the indoor seating, there are a few tables, but it's largely lounge seating, which I guess works okay for tapas food. It has a pretty bar and nice decor, but the ambience/vibe definitely feels more hotel lobby than swanky restaurant. I enjoyed my red wine, which these days is the most important part of my meal! Prices are pretty typical of tapas, dishes ranges from 10s-20s and are very shareable. Baked Winter Squash and Comte Toast- not much winter squash on it, but very cheesy. The cheese is a bit strong for me, but my husband loved it Vine Ripe Tomato Pulp Toast- a classic that we often ordered, and the tomato topping was fresh, lightly flavored, delicious Artichoke and Cheddar Croquettes- we pretty much always order croquettes, and I liked the slight twist on their version. These disappeared from our table pretty quickly.... Roasted Bone Marrow- bone marrow is another dish where when I see it, I gotta get it! Comes with 2 huge pieces of bone marrow, and they top it off with a lot of shredded beef, it it's a heartier version than most bone marrow spreads Garlic Shrimp- also pretty good, we enjoyed it. Tortilla Espanola- another classic my husband always has to get- comes with two slices of this egg/potato omellete dish. Overall we enjoyed our meal here!

Yum! We loved both the food and beverages here. The wine on tap was delicious and reasonably priced. Service was great and none of our dishes disappointed. Ambience was a bit quiet but it worked for our late 30s / early 40s group. It was unusual seeing the apartment complex residents walk through with their dogs to go outside, but that didn't really bother us. For us, the highlights were the churros (delicious chocolate sauce!), potatoes, and tomato toast. The steak was also well-cooked great for the price.

This place has small unique plated finger foods. In a really nice location and attached to condos. I was visiting a friend, stopped here for a bite and a drink. I had a delicious anchovy tappa and one of their signature mixed drinks.

4.5 stars Canteen is a modern Spanish-inspired restaurant attached to the new Springline residential/office/retail development in Menlo Park. Every dish was beautifully plated and had a creative flair, and my favorite was the Mixed Mushrooms a la Ganbarra, made of sautéed wild and foraged mushrooms mixed with greens and served with a creamy "egg yolk jam". The mushrooms had plenty of meaty, umami flavor, and the unctuous egg yolk jam brought everything together. The Bomba Rice + Seafood Socarrat was a creative take on paella, made of a generous portion of crispy rice mixed with chorizo, topped with mussels, squid, and greens. The best part of the dish was the rice, which had nicely crispy socarrat bits throughout. The Slow Cooked Spanish Octopus came with chopped tentacle chunks mixed with Gigante beans, citrus, and basil pistou. The octopus was tender and the basil pistou was flavorful and herbaceous, but the Gigantes were slightly undercooked. Finally, the Crispy Twice Cooked Chicken were two crispy chicken leg quarters served over a Basque piperade (cooked bell peppers, tomatoes, and onions) mixed with golden raisins and green olives. Overall, everything here was creative and delicious, and the service and atmosphere were on point as well. The menu prices were expensive for the portion sizes but nothing crazy for a nice restaurant like this!

This is a really nice spot to hang out with some friends and get some nice bites to eat. I don't believe there is a Happy Hour but the food and drinks are really nice. It's not crowded either so perfect to stop by on a weeknight.

Maine lobster "steam rolls" - so delicious! We get these every time

As pescatarians, who love seafood options, but don't eat meat--Canteen is one of our favorite dinner spots in the area. We love ordering a bunch of the snacks, tapas and pintxos because you can try a bunch of different tasty items. Our faves are the Maine Lobster "steam rolls" (at some times in the year, these are prepared as Dungeness crab rolls), Garlicky Tomato Pulp toast (their version of pan con tomate) with the add-on option of SF Bay anchovies, deviled eggs, shishito peppers, and especially the gazpacho soup, and mussels on toast they had earlier this summer. We also always enjoy the charred sugar snap peas and the wild mushrooms from the "From the Farm" section and the yellowfin crudo, the snapper, and the sole from the "From the Sea" main courses section. For dessert, we get these custard toast with seasonal fruit, which is like an extra gooey French toast. The service is great. They have been cool about making dietary substitutions. For example, tonight the snapper dish had chorizo sauce tonight, but we asked our server for a non-meat substitution on the sauce and she and the kitchen happily complied. For cocktails, I get the Brightside (gin, lemon, honey, jalepeño), but ask to get it made with tequila, instead of gin. My husband gets the Private Jet (their take on a Paper Plane, with bourbon, aperol, and amaro). The bartender is on-point. The drinks are always exceptional. The ambiance is also chill and casual with low velvet swivel chairs. We love this place!

Conveniently located in menlo park, right across from caltrain (where farmhouse thai is located). Restaurant is attached with luxury residential building. There is both indoor and outdoor. There are many small plates - tapas/pintxos like. Wine selection was alright, mostly new world. I grabbed a rioja and enjoyed small plates and split a salad with my friend. Total came tomorrow approx $60/person. Tad pricey but pretty normal for menlo park. Parking is also easy peasy. Service is friendly also!

Food was delish - we were party of 8 and ended getting lots of dishes - most of the snacks and pintxos were smaller we got 2 of each - we also got the Crispy, Twice Cooked Basque Chicken, Roasted Creekstone Hanger Steak, and the Slow Cooked Spanish Octopus entrees and they delicious! We ate them before I could get pictures - Of the pintxos, the croquettas were especially tasty, as well as the Rock Cod + Green Garlic 'Bacalao' Dip! Service was excellent, and the restaurant was modern, great vibes and I can imagine if I was living in the neighborhood to come by for drinks and snacks!

I came alone with my two kids age 9 and 6 and chose lounge seating when I reserved although I was unsure what that was. They have a mix of outdoor tables, indoor, and the lounge area consists of comfy chairs and sofas surrounding a large low table. It was perfect for us and the kids who were tired after soccer to relax while our food came. They also allow dogs indoors! Always nice to know we can bring our dog along if we want to. The food was tasty and kids especially loved the corn croquettes, tomato toast, and ribeye. I've had better chickpea fries (not crispy enough on the outside and kind of thick). Also liked the deviled eggs and the quail was good, but a little small (I guess it is a small bird, but still). Slow service to start but food came out quickly even it seemed pretty busy. Would love to come back!

The menu looked somewhat disappointing but once we got the food, we were really happy. Not too unique but they were tasty. Great place to get together with friends and family to have a great time.

This restaurant is such an awesome gem in Menlo Park. It's located off of Oak Grove & Merrill, inside the lobby of Springline Apartments. Parking is easy, you can park right out front or in the Springline parking lot. Some items get switched out weekly so there's always something new to experience on the menu. The ambiance is cozy, fun, yet relaxing. Lots of seating options inside and outside, especially if you have pets. Greg and his staff create a warm and welcoming environment for a wonderful night out with friends and family. Alberto is very knowledgeable about the menu and he offers great recommendations when you let him know what you like. Overall a very cool spot if you're in the mood for just a drink, hanging out by yourself or with friends.

The Basque country is a special place to me. I have friends there and it is one of the most special places to eat in the world. So for a place to bring the spirit of pintxos bars and txikiteo to the area was long awaited. Txakoli and seafood is a great pairing. As is rioja and txuleton. . Damn i love Euskadi cuisine. Ill let the food pics speak for themselves

Came here for dinner and drinks, had a phenomenal time. The waitstaff are extremely attentive, and made sure to check in on us throughout the meal. Since they just opened, we got a complimentary order of seared peppers with our first course, which were truly delicious. The other highlight was the beef cheeks, which were incredibly tender, crispy on the outside, with tons of flavor. There are some rough edges since it opened so recently, like decorations that aren't quite done and some dishes that feel like they're still being iterated on. However, overall we had a fanatic time and spent more than 3 hours enjoying their menu.

I was the Designated Driver so I ordered an Iced Tea while others in the group ordered expensive double whiskeys and top shelf cocktails, The owner of the bar comes up to me and says, and I quote, " I paid 1.5 million dollars for this bar, you can't come in here and order iced tea, It's not a coffee shop, you need to order something more expensive" Despite a lifetime of experience of ordering food and drink, apparently I ,the customer, ordered wrong. Not having Iced Tea at a bar is like not having vanilla at Baskin Robbins. There are non-alcoholic drinks here which I was well aware of, but mocktails are usually full of sugar or zero-proof alcohols which often taste like salted donkey anus, So that's not happening with me. After taking a second to process, I put 2 & 2 together and thought this was a money issue, So I said "I don't care, charge me whatever, but I would like an iced tea" and the response from the owner was " I don't care, GO FUCK YOURSELF, GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY BAR" as he pulled all of the entire groups drinks back over the bar and started gesticulating wildly. At which point further "Pleasantries" were exchanged across the bar and at the end of it all no additions to police records were incurred and we parted ways. This gatekeeping and aggressively inappropriate behavior seemed wildly incongruent with the mantra of "What would Jerry do" ( Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead ). Regardless, I am never going there again, nor their sister restaurant Bistro Vida. This pretentious, overpriced, clown show of a venue can collapse in on itself as far as I care. The bars decor of cosplaying as a secretive 1920's speakeasy burnishes the venue's lack of differentiation which is in direct conflict with the bars new money aspirations of being elite or exclusive. The ridiculous idea that the owner spent X dollars necessitates you ,the customer, spending Y dollars breaks all social conventions that I have known throughout my entire life. There is no reason for a host/owner to behave like a foul mouthed spoiled child when asked for the basest of requests. The kicker is that this is not new behaviour from the owner and has been a long running aspect of the business https://yelp.to/rVUTLHQ53y ( review from 9 months from my encounter ) I refuse to support businesses that don't respect their customers. As a speakeasy enthusiast myself I definitely agree to the fact that it is "hidden" but also it does kinda give corporate vibes a little bit - maybe we can say they "gentrified" the speakeasy experience which is honestly so funny for Palo Alto. But anyways I don't think a classification should stop you from visiting it. The food is actually surprisingly really good. We came with a pescatarian and honestly while the offerings for snacks were a bit slim, every option was really good. I feel like this was the first time where I understood the price even the the quantity is no where close to be desired. One shrimp is like $6 and I was like whoah. Service is definitely more laid back and it's overall just like a more chill atmosphere. I'm fortunate to work nearby so I'll definitely visit this place a few times after work to blow off some steam... And the drinks! Yes they are good! They are also quite strong! Would come back again but also if you're conscious of budget then I'm not sure if you'll find the same value proposition.

Using that language sets up an expectation that neither the ambiance nor the vibe is able to live up to. I can only assume that those reviews that commend this place as a speakeasy have never actually been to a real speakeasy and are more accustomed to box restaurants and bars. I sat at the bar and ordered a bourbon neat with a water back. There were three staff members behind the bar, none of them were particularly friendly or outgoing, which as someone who worked in the industry for years is surprising as a new establishment. Even though it was happy hour time, it was a Wednesday the place was less than half full and good servers /bartenders normally add to the experience and help creat a customer base of regulars to sustain business after the "come see" crowd is over. I ordered d' nuts as a snack and they weren't very special, even a bit overcooked / burnt. Maybe this place is exciting for a Palo Alto crowd that doesn't get out much, especially on the stretch of California given the lack of competition. My guess is that after a few months they will be hard-pressed to find a steady crowd.

I got 2 quesobirria tacos and 2 tacos al pastor, and visually everything looked on point -- the plating was clean, tacos looked well-stuffed, and the birria tortillas had that nice golden crisp. But once we started eating, we all felt the same thing: the salsas were lacking flavor. And with tacos like these, good salsa takes everything to the next level. Here, it kind of held them back. They only gave me two tiny lime pieces, and I couldn't even get enough juice out of them to brighten up the tacos. Something so simple, but it makes a huge difference. We also asked for chips and salsa (they're not free), and they never came. Honest mistake -- they were cool about it and took it off the bill -- but still, it added to the overall experience. Another thing: the nopales weren't well cooked or prepped. They had that slightly tough, raw texture instead of the tender, seasoned bite they should have. Flavor-wise, the pastor and birria were decent, but with weak salsa and barely any lime, it felt incomplete. All four of us agreed on the same thing: This place could be great if they tighten up their salsas and the little details. I'd give them another shot someday because the base is there -- they just need that extra punch of flavor to really elevate their tacos.

The restaurant is beautiful and vibrant. We went in the fall, but I can only imagine how fun and full of energy it must feel in the summer. Food-wise: we tried the carne asada, shrimp, and birria tacos. The shrimp tacos were the standout for both of us. Absolutely amazing! The carne asada was our least favorite; the portion of meat was small, the tortillas were tiny for the fillings, and the burnt/melted cheese inside threw off the flavor. We also shared the guacamole + salsa combo, which I enjoyed, but just a heads-up: it leans on the spicier side.

I asked for outside seating on a sunny weekday afternoon because I had my pup with me. Although we were the only ones outside, I saw that people walking by noticed us, and within 20 minutes, at least 5 more tables were seated--3 also had dogs. I ordered the sausage pizza and cacio e pepe fries. Server was ok. I had asked for the pizza without the Calabrian chili flakes. It arrived with a small dusting of them. Perhaps they forgot then tried to remove most of them? Crust was good and there were some leopard spots. The cacio e pepe fries were greasy and flabby--not at all crisp. Obviously under fried. I stopped the manager and asked if they could be cooked more. She graciously agreed they were not cooked correctly and apologized. A new, crisp order arrived shortly. Much better but in all these are more like regular fries. The cacio e pepe seasoning should be a little heavier. Overall, I had a relaxing lunch on the patio and enjoyed the great weather. The food was good, and I'll give them another try. Extra points for being dog friendly.

Decently busy for a week night. Our waiter was really nice and attentive. The man who gave us our table was really nice too. They have a children's menu - with crayons. Nice touch. Food was food. We got a children's cheese pizza, fungi with sausage, and a Cesar salad. The Cesar salad was great - I wanted to have the whole thing myself. Plenty of restrooms - stalls. Do plan to return.

Though it was Saturday noon, we found free covered parking at Menlo Center Plaza off Santa Cruz Avenue. True to online postings, this restaurant had vibrant & faux flowery decor. Our large group of 8 was seated in the main dining hall with another large group. The menus of specials and cocktails with colorful F&D photos reminded me of touristy European restaurants. I had the hot Japanese sencha while my wife got the Thai Iced tea served with a crushed iced ball on top. Roti Mataba, Crispy Egg Rolls, Farmhouse Wings and Crispy Calamari were our starters for this gang of eclectic diners. I shared with my wife the Panang Neua (braised beef in curry sauce) and Pad See You which came gorgeously plated with generous servings. We were able to sample the Crab Fried Rice and Tom Kha from our dinnermates. Ruk Na (love you) Platter was the underwhelming dessert combo of Thai Vacation, Sticky Rice (no mango), Chocolate Cake with fresh fruits and a macaron. To be described as IG worthy in the menu wasn't accurate IMO. It must've been an off-day in the kitchen when they were prepping this "leave the choice up to us" plate of sweets. Food was way flavorful than regular Thai restaurants we've been to. The common complaint is the very pricy food. The staff was nice though. They even acknowledged our request for photos. Even with the setbacks, this was a nice lunch with this group.

The drinks/cocktails are great with an extensive selection in addition to their willingness to make things not on the menu as long as they have the ingredients. We only had "bar food" (french fries, onion rings, and my friends had wings) but the menu looked really interesting. Next time I will go back for some pizza or other things on the menu. The most unexpected part of the evening happened when they brought out a "cake" made of brownies and candle in it! My friend sneakily told them it was my birthday. The brownie cake was delicious and enough for many more than the 3 of us. Such a great place and I will be back soon!

Really good portion too. We also had a couple martinis and cognac neat. The bartender/server was very personable and very knowledgeable about liquor. Especially tequila. A nice spot to hang. Would stop by again if in the area.

It is my pleasure to say my reservation this past weekend was nothing short of phenomenal! Sofia, our server and Sam, the GM made our visit very memorable with their kind, attentive, and energetic service. Their recommendations for cocktails, wine, and food were all fabulous and demonstrated great attention to detail on their end when prompted with what we all liked. I was touched by Sam's gesture of surprising me with a hand-crafted lychee cocktail, on the house. He remembered that this was my most favorite fruit and reminded me of my home back in Hawaii. Overall, the drinks and food arrived extremely quickly and were presented beautifully. Everything tasted even better than I remembered! The short rib was tender and everything on the plate went well together. I loved the Yorkshire pudding! It was soft and had an eggy flavor. The truffle pasta had a very mushroomy flavor that I loved. It gave it an earthy taste. The pasta itself held the sauce well and it was perfectly cooked. I was not a fan of the lobster roll because the lobster did not taste fresh and fell out of the New England roll. Over all, I enjoyed most of the food and hope to go back to give it a second try.
