The credit card machine frequently doesn't work, then it would only accept exact change of a five dollar bill, which is never received well by the machine. The amount of times that my family has driven here to try and go to the park only to have to return home because we could not gain entrance. Currently there are FIVE CARS all in line at the entrance trying to get it! The drivers are all out of their vehicles and very frustrated. Also, while there are a porta potties in many places, the only proper bathroom is at the entrance. The women's room door is broken, so you really just go to the restroom with the door wide open! All that to say, this is an amazing park that needs much better maintenance.

You can use if for $5 a day as a non-resident if you ever feel the need to go play some b-ball, volley ball, hit up some racket ball or work out for those days you're feeling extra out of shape. Cheaper if you are a resident. They also have monthly and yearly rates as well, which are reasonable. I think the husband and I paid a little more than $50 for unlimited use of the place for one months time. This was before the wedding, so it didn't last long. We haven't been back since, but again, we're pretty lazy people. Plus he's like, underweight so I'd rather he pig out at Jack in the Box anyway. But back to the Center. They have a pool even, and lots of classes you can sign up for (kids classes too). You can even take a course to get your concealed weapons licenses, and it's a no-fail class. They work with you until pass and I believe it's only $110. Rad deal if you ask me. If you're ever in the area, I high suggest hitting this place up for some good, healthy fun and exercise. It's worth it and good for you. Who doesn't want that? And by the way, the gym is totally not crowded like most other gyms, so ladies... if you want some alone time with that treadmill or stair climber, this is the place to go.

We have not had a chance to walk the trails yet, so I will have to update my review once we do. In regards to the playgrounds, one is a small little structure near the baseball fields and the other is a large, spread out structure that can be accessed through the second entrance into the park (NOT S Field Dr.). The playground has a small fence that runs nearly fully around it, with openings for entering and exiting. There is plenty to do, including lots of "spinney things" that my kids love. The design of the structure itself is top notch. Bark bottom. Benches are situated within the fence, circling the playground or parents can sit under the covered pavilion behind the playground. The park is beautiful and the playground is fun, but there are two negatives: 1. Lack of shade 2. Bathrooms far away from playground The play structure has limited shade covering the slide areas, which probably help to keep the equipment from getting burning hot, but there is no shade otherwise. I hope the trees they planted around the playground will grow into massive shade trees, but for now they aren't doing a thing. The bathroom is far from the playground. It's a long walk for little legs, and some parents might not feel comfortable leaving their little kids on the playground for a quick run to the bathroom, because it's not really that quick. Also, when I went, there were allllllll kinds of cicadas in the bathroom: swimming in the toilet and crawling all over the sinks. LOTS. I haven't lived in Texas long and am new to Cicadas, so I can't say if this is a sign of poor sanitation or just par for the course, but I thought it was worth noting.

I really love the small town feel that Roanoke has to offer with the most quaint and unique places to eat like Babes. Lots of one of a kind for sure with down to earth hospitality. I even met a wonderful retired Filipina woman with her awesome family, and we even managed to practice my Tagalog that she expressed; "your tone is amazingly good for growing up in San Francisco." I am grateful everyday I wake up, thankful for being alive and that I have the best of both world, but more importantly; I feel blessed that I have this awesome opportunity to continue my journey to discover our very own homeland, USA! If I were rating this based on the ball fields, it would more than likely be five stars. But, being a mom of kids not yet in sports, I came for the playground, and that is how I'll rate the park. It's an okay playground. A little small. It was big enough for my 5 kids because they were the only ones there, but I imagine on a day where sports are going on at the fields, the playground would quickly become uncomfortably crowded. My kids loved the woodsy theme - log slides, large mushrooms to climb on, doors in trees - and it was fun to watch their imaginations run wild. It's a great start for pretend play. Unfortunately, the playground has NO SHADE. No shade over the play structure, no shade over the benches. With the Texas sun and a metal slide, this is not a good combination! I'm no arborist, so I couldn't tell you if the small trees around the perimeter of the playground will one day be huge shade trees or not, but I'd venture to guess my kids will be long grown before that happens. There is a shaded seating area outside of the playground where parents of older kids could sit, but it's a little too far away for most to feel comfortable leaving a toddler, I would think. The bathrooms are clean and nicer than what the typical park has to offer. All in all, North Park doesn't stand out against the other playgrounds in the area. Bicentennial Park is just around the corner and is a much better destination for kids to burn energy and moms to catch a break.

I'm pretty terrible at reading trail maps, but I believe we took the Bluebird trail and followed the signs to Grapevine Lake. The trail leads you right down to the water, where there is a nice little shore to throw rocks and splash around in. Someone even hung a tree swing a few hundred feet up from the lake. So fun! I can't speak for all the trails, but this particular trail was not entirely stroller friendly. I have a pretty nice jogger and a strong man to push it, so we did ok on the trail to Grapevine Lake, but the trail is very narrow in parts and most strollers will be too wide. You need one that is pretty much built for off-roading. The nature center might have a bathroom inside, but all I saw was a porta potty behind a privacy wall. Now is the time to get out and enjoy some outdoor exercise. The weather is crisp and nature is calling. Make your way to Bob Jones Nature Center and take advantage of the beautiful trails and gorgeous lake views.
