I have adopted four dogs from AZ Mastiff Rescue. The first 2 were a pair of 4.5 yo bonded litter mate Cane Corso siblings...male & female. I had lost 2 dogs within 3 mo of each other (a Presa Canario & a Pit/Mastiff mix) & was wanting to adopt 2. I know how hard it is to get 2 dogs adopted together of any size, let alone two giants, so it made sense to meet them first. I expected to pay 2 adoption fees, but as they wanted these 2 be kept together, they graciously only charged me one, which was appreciated. I was also so very grateful that they would not separate he pair even though there were people interested in one or the other. What a tremendous difference it made in the lives of dogs together since birth. They were incredibly close & who knows what separating them would have done to their personalities. Both were some of the easiest dogs I have ever transitioned into my home...well mannered, loving, loved humans & other dogs. Still receiving AMR new dog arrival updates, about 1 yr after adopting my Corsos, a 1 yo Presa that reminded me of both the dogs I lost before them came into rescue. I wasn't looking to adopt a 3rd, didn't need a 3rd giant dog, & had a trip out of town a month later, so I did nothing, telling myself this Presa would surely be gone by the time I came back. But he was there when I returned...tho again I still did nothing. Until one day, as I had marked him as a favorite, I got an email update...& when I got updates in the past, it was always because they had been adopted. When I saw there was an update on him, I screamed out loud..."oh-no!" when my reaction should have been "oh-good he was adopted"! Crazy as it sounds, it felt like someone had gotten MY dog! Well, he hadn't been adopted, they had just updated his pictures! My reaction told me I needed to go meet him, so my 2 Corsos & I did just that. Not uncommon, he didn't show his true personality at that visit. He was polite, but clearly scared & didn't present enthused to be adopted. He had clearly been thru something & AMR was his safe space. Nevertheless, I adopted him, & he was the best little brother my Corsos could have had. There was not one fight ever! His spirit exudes pure joy. He was incredibly close with the Corsos, but it was when they were in their own final days (they passed 4 mo apart) that I saw how intently & lovingly he looked after them. Clearly depressed when they were gone, he needed a new sibling. Always friendly to big & little dogs alike early on, but after covid my dogs rarely interacted with other dogs, & he acted weird with every one we introduced him to. So I did a foster to adopt, picking a dog who had been there a long time. Long story short, it was quickly clear they weren't a good match (but that dog did get her perfect forever home soon after). Darlene had a very good sense of my Presa's personality & his issues, & recommended a 10 mo old female who had come from a horrible abuse/neglect situation. Again did a foster to adopt. This new little girl we immediately discovered had also gotten some bad medical interventions before she got to AMR, & needed help fast. Darlene was in continuous communication with me as we determined what was needed, & she quickly found a way to get her the care she would have died without. I transported her to a wonderful volunteer who drove her a significant distance to a fabulous vet who performed surgery & looked after her for a week assuring she was ok & Darlene herself devoted an entire day driving to retrieve her so I could get her back. While it wasn't love at first sight, in just a few days they were playing. Were I making a selection just for me, I could find dozens of dogs dozens of places but it was critical that I find a good match for my Presa. And she truly found us the right dog for him! These breeds hold a special place in my heart, & they are not only powerful dogs, but they have special & powerful personalities...& it is clear that this rescue has the unique experience to get the right dogs into the right homes from literally doing this devoted work for decades! When I read the critical reviews, I felt it imperative to share my personal experience. To hear people complain about the adoption fees makes me crazy! I know they had my first three for months before I adopted them & I know what that costs in food & medical care (some they care for, for years). My youngest had surgery that far exceeded her adoption fee. These amazing people save hundreds of these giant breeds every year & do so fueled on the efforts of amazing volunteers, donations, & events. They don't do what is easiest, they do what is in the best interest of each individual dog, as they should. This is truly a labor of love! And I am forever grateful to them for my dog family!

You can contact Animal Control, there's an active case with "ANUBIS" AND THIS RESCUE! So after the dog I adopted attacked my husband, putting 8 stitches in his arms (it was unknown to this group he was "resource guarding").. They kindly picked him up, and "re-trained" him.. However, never responding to us with reguard to a refund, or allowing us to have the dog back after re-training, they've now adopted him out again, and made another $600 in the process. SCAM!!! They may say "it's in the contract, we don't do refunds" HOWEVER, it's also clear that the owner has first choice in taking a dog back in cases like this or various other ways to make it right. I expressed on multiple occasions I'd like to see how the training went, and even offered to pay for the training, and NO RESPONSE! They just adopted him out again and got $$$ again. What a racket!

Denzo "A Gift From God"

My husband and I just adopted Denzo who is a year old English Mastiff We originally went to meet a specific Cane Corso but we soon realized he wasn't the dog we were able to handle, but the patient volunteers showed us multiple dogs that fit our needs (cats, small dog) the best and we met the dog we needed and wanted! We've had him 3 days now, he's learning boundaries, the new house and new tricks. He is still a puppy at 120lbs but with patience and training he will learn how to be a dapper dog fitting of his new castle. Thank you Pam and Bobby you ladies gave us exactly what we wanted and needed he is such a sweetheart I can't wait to send updates and new photos your way

Zelda. Loved, but was not vetted properly and placed in the wrong home.

Long review, but good insight, please read if you are not feeling great about AZ mastiff rescue. Well, there is a lot to say here but I will just give you the facts of our experience. I am a husband, a father, a firefighter and a dog owner my entire life. I've had breeds that ranged from a weiner dog, multiple labradors, Rottweiler, and multiple mastiff breeds. We have adopted two dogs from AZ mastiff rescue. First, was Lily. She was a very sweet bullmastiff. But her medical records did not show that she had severe hip dysplasia to the point where she couldn't walk about 6 months after receiving her. She was 2 years old. We took care of her, had her on medications until she passed away at age 6. The second dog we adopted from AZ mastiff rescue was Zelda. This was in November 2021. We had an application in for 6 months waiting for the right dog for our home, and finally we thought we found her, a 4-5 year old cane corso, Zelda. We needed her to be good with kids, cats and dogs, a unicorn dog. I flew down to Arizona, met her, adopted her, rented a car and drove back home 13 hours to Reno, Nevada. Right after swiping my credit card I was handed her medical records that showed she had filed down teeth, multiple mammary tumors, and scars on her face from a "rough past". Taking her home she was scared at first, which was fine, but we quickly realized she was not good with other dogs. She is dog aggressive. But we are people that are committed to our dogs so that is something we were willing to train on and deal with/accept. Zelda became protective over one of our children, and unprovoked bit our other child (age 7) in the face. Luckily her teeth were worn down and it did not scar our child, but did leave a large bruise. We had her quarantined for 10 days per dog bite laws in our county, and I reached out to AZ mastiff rescue for help. I was met with short replies, no empathy, no ownership over a dog that was clearly not vetted properly. After 12 days I was advised that we could drive back to Phoenix, pay a fee to have Zelda put down and that was it. We are not naive, our house is clearly not the right environment for Zelda, and unfortunately we are going to have to put her down due to her now biting a child unprovoked. But the lack of communication prior to adopting and after this incident is a problem that needs to be fixed. I will not go to this rescue again. Tread with caution, ask a lot of questions, and trust your gut. If it doesn't feel right, it is not right. We will miss you Zelda, we gave you probably the best 6 months of your life. You loved lounging in the yard, sleeping on the couch, drooling, and doing the "mastiff lean" on humans for all the pets. I am sorry we could not keep you safe and give you the environment you needed.

From the minute you sign up to drive, you become part of a team. Communication is excellent, and safety for both kitties and drivers is VERY important. In order to drive one must be approved and show proof of insurance. A coordinator takes charge of arrangements and is always available. There are backup drivers in case of an emergency. Everything is covered, from the minute you leave the house to the time you return home. I'm not sure why anyone would leave a negative comment about this all volunteer group. You do NOT have to donate money in order to drive EVER! Some complain about wait times. That's because it takes time to make sure that the kitties are vetted, ok to travel and MOST IMPORTANTLY going to safe and good homes. I can't wait to drive again!

A love train…read more URRKN stands for Underground Railroad Rescue Kitty Network and was started by Tina LaBlanc in Oct of 2011. It's a way of transporting kitties from shelters, foster homes and temporary homes to their "forever homes". It's basically a series of wonderful volunteers that are willing to transport cats from one place to another. One long trips each volunteer will drive whatever distance they feel comfortable and then meet another volunteer at a prearranged location. On a long trip it might be many volunteers that selflessly give their time and transportation to help the kitty get to it's finally destination. A person waiting for the kitty can actually keep track on the progress as the cat travels on it's "love train". We recently adopted a kitty from Florida that had to be transported to Rhode Island. We contacted URRKN and volunteers were quickly arranged so our kitty, Gersemi, arrived to us quickly and in great health and spirits. There is no charge for this incredible service but of course donations are accepted. It all depends on the kindness and generosity of strangers who anonymously do good without asking for anything but a simple thank you. The volunteers of the URRKN along with Tina LaBlanc, are doing great deeds in a quiet way. Such acts of kindness for no other reason but to be kind are wonderful and rare things that should never be taken for granted. https://www.facebook.com/groups/URRKN/

Clearly what the original architect had in mind many years ago never came to fruition as it really hasn't changed in years. Is appears to be a small artist community but we didn't see anything going on at the moment so couldn't tell if it id still active or they make everything south in Scottsdale at Cosanti. There is a gift shop where you can watch a brief video on the history and learn about their wind chime creations. Personally I've received many of the wind chimes over the last 20 years for housewarmings or Christmas gifts. Each is unique. The greeter in the gift shop was friendly and stated there is a tour available as well. We didn't have time for the tour but purchased a couple of small gifts. He suggested visiting the Scottsdale location as well which is called Cosanti. I had no idea it was located in Scott's well. Will check it out.

70s vision for communal living by architect Paolo Soleri, this is on the way from Phoenix to Sedona…read moreand worth a stop if you are into architecture and ecology, you'll see Soleri's unique "arcology" vision here which is a fusion of both. We signed up for the tour and yes the dirt road is rough leading to Arcosanti, our tour guide mentioned a future expansion in the living area but in order to keep building the road has to be paved, hopefully it's better in the future. The behind the scenes tour participants was twice as large as they normally have so at times it was hard to see and hear though our guide tried their best. We loved hearing about the different spaces and seeing what was hand made by volunteers though we enjoyed the more intimate feel of Cosanti more. The gift shop is one staircase above the cafe and it's where the tour meets. There is better bell selection at Cosanti If that's what you are shopping for but Arcosanti has more hand-made knick knacks by residents, there is also a nice selection of books about Soleri and Arcosanti. You can stay the night here and get a good view of the stars and a more intimate experience, we would do this next time. The architecture and vibe would make it worth it!
