I have been coming here for approximately 8 years now. At first it was just Cupcake, My pure bred Maltese. Cupcake loves being groomed but did not like being in a cage or being blow dried and Bonnie, the owner of Canine Designs, made sure to give Cupcake the extra love and attention he needs. Fast forward five years later and Cupcake has a girlfriend. Her name is Waffles. And she is a pure bred shih tzu. She is full of energy and very lovable. She has completely different fur than cupcake. Cupcake has hair where Waffles definitely has more of a fur. Waffles loves going there as much as Cupcake does. They get to see other dogs. Get pampered by Bonnie and the ladies. Then one day we took Waffles to get fixed and oops, too late she was pregnant. Waffles delivered five beautiful Malshi puppies! Four boys and one girl. And my entire life changed. Nothing gave me so much pleasure than to come home and have all these little faces looking up at me. I showed up at Bonnies with my two dogs and the whole puppy family for their first baths. Bonnie and her ladies Andrea and the rest of the gang were in love! They were so gentle with Waffles Babies. Washing each one. Fluffing them up. And getting ready for their new forever homes. She was VERY REASONABLE in price when I needed it the most! Seven dog grooming could leave anyone broke! I kept two puppies. Big Fluff and Groucho. I couldn't decide which one to keep and kept two. I spend a huge portion of my life being a mother to four dogs and living up to the expectation that brings. Big fluff and Groucho are Malshi and they have the best traits of their parents with a mix of fur type. Again Bonnie works with me because she knows it's expensive for Four dogs to get groomed. Bonnie, Andrea, and the rest of the ladies at Canine Designs are my extended family for my dogs. They know Groucho has sensitive ears that have to get cleaned often and cupcake has skin allergies and they live my dogs like I love them. You would be insane not To use their services for your pets. read more

Champ and Trixie love this place and they do an excellent job. Both get washed and cut and always come out all pretty. They even clean off Trixie's eye stains. Came in to get my dog groomed. Some Lady was nice and took my dog in. There is this other older lady named Bonnie who had the audacity to talk about myself my wife and son while we were i the establishment to a fellow coworker. Never will I ever bring my dog there again. If Bonnie can talk bad about Customers imagine how she treats the pets. Such a shame to the establishment. read more

LOVE! Bonnie the owner and master dog groomer. She Is extremely talented I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from her. For now I'm just bathing. I'm hoping that being a hairdresser will give me a slight Edge. So far so good, I just want to say how remarkable when she finishes her scissor work. The dog comes out absolutely perfect. My dog was getting a bit too fluffy.... dog owners know what I'm talking about... where your dog is giving you signs where he/she clearly cannot see anymore and they paw their fur in front of their face as a sign saying, "hey human...it's time for me to get a haircut!" So (last minute) I decide to call all the usual places in NJ (didn't want to travel all the way to NYC on a Saturday afternoon) that my dog, Momo has been to for grooming before.. i.e. any Petsmart in NJ. Do you think there were any available appointments? NOPE! Thanks to Yelp however, I did a search for dog grooming close to where I live and found mom and pop groomers that might give me better luck. Low and behold, I stumble upon Canine Designs......read the available reviews and decided to give a call and see their availability. They were able to take Momo in an hour which was PERFECT! Very conveniently located on the corner of Bloomfield Ave and Rockland Terrace, which makes parking a breeze (if you know Bloomfield Ave, street parking can be a pain in the arse!) Upon entering the salon, I saw groomers steadily working on dogs and dogs running around at the feet of the groomers. Just like others have said in their reviews, they are cage free, which I was a bit iffy about, but they make sure the dogs behave. Momo entered and was accepted right away by the "pack". I told Bonnie, who I later found out was the owner, that I wanted her body short like a pup cut. She asked how I wanted her legs. I thought to myself, "There's an option for that?" She suggested to give my dog "legs" which means keeping them a bit long and not shaved. I agreed and she told me that, they would call me in about 2 hours, it's cash/check only, and it would be about $60. When they called in exactly 2 hours, the woman reiterated their payment policy and told me it was exactly $60 (no tax). Upon arrival, Momo was perfectly cut and looked so happy to not be in a cage! The "leg" suggestion was such a great decision and I would recommend that for anyone who brings their small dogs in for a pup cut. Definitely recommend this place to anyone! Bonnie was excellent and caring and I definitely will be bringing my dog here for grooming on the regular. read more

I really wanted to like this place due to its proximity to home and its support of rescue animals, but it wasn't meant to be. This review only pertains to nail clipping. It is possible that the full grooming services are better. I called one morning to see if I needed an appointment for nail clipping - they said to just drop by in the afternoon. I went in the afternoon and waited about 5 minutes for someone to address me. It's a one-room establishment so every groomer can clearly see someone come in, but no one said hi. Eventually a groomer got off the phone and spoke with me. One of my dogs can get finicky and squirmy with his nail clipping. I mentioned that he would need to be held by one person while another trims his nails. At the previous grooming salon I went to, this was never a problem and they always sent two people to take care of my dog. Here, the woman made a face and immediately asked, "Does your dog bite?" It's a legitimate question, but I wish her mannerism had been more professional or at least didn't equate an anxious dog immediately with a violent dog. While a coworker of hers was checking her cell phone, the woman than asked me to pick up my dogs "off the floor" while she trimmed the nails. My dogs aren't Great Danes, but one is nearing 50 lbs - at no point did she take into consideration that I may not be able to lift my dogs off the floor. We started with my more finicky dog who was moving about and squirming, and the whole time none of the other idle staff paid any attention. She, for her part, didn't try to calm or soothe my dog. Even a couple of words of comfort or "good dog" - nothing. The whole point in bringing my dogs into a professional groomer was then completely erased when she then clipped into my dog's quick, causing him to bleed. That was the last straw. What's the point in bringing my dog in to a professional if the professional A) didn't act professionally and made a face when I shared my dog need some extra love & care; B) didn't provide extra assistance (when it's readily available) to help me calm and restrain my dog for the clipping; and C) cut into my dog's quick? Lastly, as a "cash and check only" establishment, it is the establishment's responsibility to ensure that it has enough change for customers. Using $20 for $10 is not unreasonable, but yet I still got the "do you have anything less" and when I said no, a sour expression and change back in singles and quarters. I thought based on the website and pricing this would be a great place to bring my dogs. I learned that a glossy website and a bargain price don't make up for professional and competent service. Like I said, grooming may be ok, but based on this lackluster experience I'd rather attempt to do this at home myself or drive half an hour back to my previous salon where the experience was stellar. read more

All around a really nice experience for my dog ( who is 12 and not always the easiest to groom) He actually loves going there ! No cages , so the dogs feel more like they are on a play date. All the groomers are friendly and groom to your specifications, and the prices are very fare. I highly recommend Canine Designs . read more

My 15 year old Dachshund is treated with such care. They always remember that she has a fear of the dryer and that she doesn't prefer to be caged. Whenever I pick her up she is happily out and about with other dogs. My dog was a rescue who was an owner surrender at 13 so leaving her anywhere is traumatic for her especially if she is placed in a cage. She comes home smelling wonderful and soft as silk!! read more

I was so worried that I would not find a groomer who would cut my little girl the way she was cut before (we had a great groomer in Hoboken where we used to live), but Angela at Canine Designs did possibly the BEST job I have ever seen on a dog before. Penny was fluffy but still short, tame, and Angela made her face even cuter (if that was even possible) than before. Penny had no cuts, she did not look irritated or stressed by the process. They do not use leashes, cages, or neck restraints here and do a nice job of separating the larger pups from the smaller ones. If you are looking for a groomer who truly cares about animals and will love your pup the way she would love her own, Angela is the groomer for you. Make sure you ask for her because I can tell you for sure we will 100% be coming back here specifically for her to groom our precious little pup. read more

We just moved to the area from Colorado and swear this was the best haircut our little Sharkie has ever had. The staff is great, Shark was really comfortable there, loved the team and loved that he didn't have to be locked up in a crate. His haircut was perfect, I didn't even have to describe what we liked, they picked a cut that was good for his breed and shape and it turned out adorable! Will never go anywhere else. read more

I heard about this place from everyone at the dog park. Everyone's dogs looked great so I asked where they did their grooming. Bonnie was the best. No cages and the service was the best. My Khloe came out looking and smelling brand new. The only reason why I didn't give it five stars is because they don't accept credit cards but other than that they are great. I have to say, initially my thoughts on this establishment were good. I called the day of asking for some bows, a nail clipping and a general "youthful" touch up on a toy poodle who was to be adopted the next day. I was happy that they could accommodate me within hours. When I got there they were nice to us, but the one groomer seemed very annoyed that my dog was not standing still. She didn't come out looking any different then when I brought her in, except she had bows in her hair and nails clipped. Up until now I would have still given 3 stars because they were accommodating me at the last minute. The payment issue was what blew me away. I saw the sign that it was cash or check only, so I walked up a block to the bank to grab cash. When I went to pay, I was told they had "no change"... for a TWENTY! They sent me next door to the nail salon to find change- who refused. I ended up walking into a few more establishments, dog in tow, trying to break A TWENTY. Granted, it seemed like the stylists were mad about something else- perhaps getting some dogs out in time, so the blunt statement of "no change" was possibly related to that. But when you have a business that accepts only cash or check, then maybe carry change for a $20. I do have to add though, that all of the other dogs being groomed looked beautiful. Their grooming abilities are clearly excellent. Customer service, at least for me today, was not even good. read more

Highly recommend NOT taking your dog(s) here. Aside from the fact that every time I dropped my pups off the price of their haircuts would vary - their time spent at this place would also vary. I have two 13 pound dogs who would sometimes take as long as 6 hours!!!! That's an absurd amount of time. My last straw however was how rude everyone was every time I walked in. So happy to have found Pupcake Groomers right down the street instead !!!! read more

I am so glad I did, our little Shih Tzu was all matted, poor Sushi. But they were so kind to her and they said she just sat there and was such a good little girl. My poor long hair cat was so matted we couldn't even brush him. The entire staff was so friendly and caring. Captain Bligh never looked so good!
