My family and I went in to look at bunk house travel trailers. We had to wait a while for the salesman to come out that had called me earlier. He showed us a few trailers. Stayed outside most of the time. No trailers came with tv's. You have to pay extra to get a tv with any trailer. The selection of rv's was good, but the required equipment we wanted was all extra. The kicker was that they wanted a $500 prep fee and a $1000 delivery fee for a trailer that is already there! We have been to 5 other RV dealerships and not one of them charged those fees. We bought a 32 foot travel trailer somewhere else and it came with a tv and other features and they did not charge any hidden fees. read more

We bought a new class b rv here in March 2,2018. It is a Winnebago 170XEra and we love it, but here is the problem. When we bought it the touch screen didn't work so we left it there for a month. When we came back to pick it up they had not fixed it . We live 2 hrs away so they ordered another screen and we went back when it came in and they replaced it. Low and behold we left after 6 hours of waiting and found out the radio didn't work!!! Took it back again waited another 6 hours service tech said it worked and as soon as we got on interstate we had no reception!!! Really!!! Now we are unable to get back there for several weeks!! This place is an absolute joke, I would advise you go somewhere else. Was on the road and had a blowout, decided to replace four tires, they said no problem, the had to run 10 min up the road to Roanoke and get them, and they'd get it done. Took them over four hours to get to it, and then they had the wrong tires. I've been here almost 7 hours now and they haven't even started. Service tech who ordered the wrong tires told me I was "fortunate" they could find my tires, and gave me a line about trailer tires being illegal on a motor home, rather than admit his mistake. To top it all off my dog, cat and disabled parents are with me, I would have taken them to a hotel or went somewhere else. Absolutely infuriating. I should have read the other reviews. read more

I was in Virginia visiting and stopped by Camping World to ask some questions about a 5th wheel camper as my local dealer ditched me when I told him that I was not buying, that I just had questions. I approached the sales guy at Camping World the same way and he was very helpful and spent a couple of hours answering questions. As a result of the time he spent with me I found out that I would not be able to pull a 5th wheel with the options and size I needed do to the fact my truck just was not big enough. As a result I did buy a new trailer. So far so good! During the finance part we where told that we also get an Elite membership with Good Sam's and 30 nights of camping which had to be used in the first year. Once we returned home we planned our first camping trip and selected a rv site that was a Good Sam's member. We were told by the place that Good Sam's had nothing on record as far as free nights go. So I called Good Sam's and was told that they had not been giving free nights for a couple years now. Thinking that I misunderstood that it was through Good Sam's I called Camping World to find out how to redeem the free nights. After talking with the Sales guy (he didn't know how to redeem them either) he said he would talk to the finance guy to find how to redeem them and that he would call me. After waiting a few days I called to follow up. I had to leave a message and to this day I still have not heard anything back. I seems to me that after the sale is made that you are no longer important to them. If they made a mistake simply admit it. If you are thinking about service work being done here, think again. You would think that people who only work on RV's would be professionals but that is not the case here. Had to order parts two weeks ahead of time (not a problem) but they did not order all the parts required to do the job. Charged me for more than twice the man hours it took to install the parts they did have. Charged me 4 hours labor that was not required, more than $400.00. This place has the absolute worst customer service i have ever experienced. For a place that makes so much money off their customers you would think that they would care about how they treat the people that buy things and services from them. I tried to get warranty work completed on my camper, just a few simple fixes that should have been caught on their so called $1,500 prep fee. The warranty that is offered on all new units is not a Gander RV warranty but a combination of several manufacturers' warranties. If there are issues with a new camper and the service department is required to repair it under warranty, they reach out to the manufacturer or component companies to claim the warranty. This causes significant delays in repair. Also, if there are any disputes from a manufacturer or component company, they proved unable or unwilling to resolve most disputes without intervention from the owner. Communication between service management, service personnel and service technicians was poor. Quality assurance is nearly non-existent. Service Management actively avoid conflict resolution. Service management did offer a few minor amenities (an extra sway bar and below standard repair to minor damage to camper at no additional charge), but this compensation fell significantly short of making things right. The manufacturer (Heartland) produces a product that is poorly constructed and designed while their warranty department goes above and beyond in their efforts to dispute valid repair claims. Gander RV continues to conduct business with this company despite reporting routine dissatisfaction of interaction with the company. DO NOT PURCHASE FROM THIS LOCATION!!! They DO NOT support the products they sell! We just purchased a brand new Heartland Pioneer 2019 and found out on our first trip that the AC does not work. Understanding that these things sometimes happen, we were willing to make the 2 hour trip to have it taken care of. The service department said they could not look at it until NEXT MONTH! Then they advised us we would need to return to drop it off once the parts came in which would likely take another FOUR WEEKS! We called the sales department hoping for a little assistance and even spoke to the general manager to no avail. This was hands down the WORST CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE of my life. Their only goal is to sell the most RVs. Please learn from our mistake! Drive 3 hours north to Winchester Camping World where the service manager is seeing us in only TWO DAYS! AND offered to give us a replacement AC from one in stock so we won't have to wait! UPDATE: Happy to report our AC is now fixed! In less than 30 minutes, the service department at Winchester Camping World was able to diagnose and repair the issue! Fantastic customer service. We are full timers in a 1987 C-Class RV and since it is older, we needed service when we rolled into town, which included black tank removal, grey tank replacement, AC service, hot water heater replacement, and an electrical check for a short in our remodeled bathroom. Since we full time, we couldn't afford to have it in the shop too long and after three days, all but the grey water tank was taken care of and the only reason the grey tank was not finished was because it was a special order. So we were able to take the RV and live in it while we wait for the grey tank to be delivered. I will update when all repairs are finished. But so far this is some of the best customer service I have ever encountered. read more

They even stated "that won't work, he'll be back" talking about their own repair. Couldn't find a leak because the floor had dried out while sitting there over a month but I found the hole where water infiltrated in. Our experience here was less than stellar. Check-in process seemed very lengthy. We took our vehicle here as our generator was not staying on. Our first thought was that the line needed to be cleared. We asked them to do that. After committing that the situation would be checked first thing in the morning, we didn't hear anything till mid-morning the following day. They told us that the error code showing was not something that they could handle. We needed to take it to a generator specialist. They offered to remove the generator and take it to the specialist as it would cost less then the specialist doing so. We chose to bring it to the specialist. The specialist isolated the problem to being a fuel source problem. So we spent hundreds of dollars confirming our original suspicion. We took it back to Camping World and asked if they had ever checked the line like we asked. They said they didn't check that because of the error code. I am not a technician, but it would have seemed awfully logical to check that before sending us on a goat rodeo. We will be looking for a more knowledgeable service provider the next go around. They lost us as a customer. read more

It took over a month for the service department to reseal the AC unit on our RV. We were told a big job came in that they had to take care of. When we got ours back, it was filthy inside...debris from removing the AC was everywhere. Used to depend on them for all our regular maintenance service. We'll find somewhere else to go. read more

Excellent Service Department! Started with the Service Receptionist Elizabeth, then the Service Adviser Brian. Both of these people were thorough and professional in their effort to help us define the problems with our coach. Then we met Michelle, the Shop Forman. I can't say enough good things about her. She tried her best to get our water flow and water heater issues resolved. She and Brian were able to correct the water flow issue in a very timely manner. Fortunately Michelle had James, a Service Tech, available to isolate and correct the heater problem. This is a good organization with a wonderful group of professionals who try their best to get you back on the road quickly. read more

Bob Bricker. We had a cooling hose to our Aqua Hot system split causing engine overheat. Towed to Camping World at Roanoke VA. Mike McCoy and his maintenance staff were terrific. Got there at closing and Mike stayed to get us electric and water for the night. First thing in the morning the mechanic found the break and ordered parts. Fixed and on the road home by 11:00. No parking for our 31' Class C and tow. Employees little help when looking for parts. I put the onus on management. It is their job to help their employees be resourcesful. They did not have the part we needed but instead of helping to brainsorm solutions, their answer was to show us a complete kit at 3 times the cost of the part. We drove 3 hours to Gander R V of Roanoke to trade in a camper and buy a new one. The first thing that happen was that we asked to see another camper on the lot that they had just got in. They were not happy... The salesmen lied to us saying we would have to pay the extra cost out of pocket because the paperwork was done. Funny because when they couldn't give us the money they promised for our old camper, they changed the paperwork no porblem!!! Wow! There were more inconsensitys but let's get to the big one. The finance department wanted us to get extra warranties for our camper. We told them we already put the camper on our insurance policy so no thanks. Well... our insurance wasn't good enough... so my husband gave in and said he would take the brozen package IF we could cancel it if we found out we were ok with our own insurance that we already have . We were told "oh yes!! You can cancel any time no problem! You'll get your money back depending on how long you use the camper before asking to close it." He never said how much it cost just that it would add about 2 dollars to our payment. We we got home and looked at the paperwork they had charged us 5,000.00 dollars in little add on. We went from paying 5000.00 down out of pocket plus 7200.00 for our trade in on a 23,000.00 dollar camp to still owing 19,500.00. We just as well not had a trade in. The real kicker??? I called them today and guess what a lot of that crap you can cancel any time??? Well no you can't. By the way they were supposed to deliver our camper Friday. Its not here.. they forgot to tell the driver. When I called the finance department today he told me I would have to drive all the we back to Roanoke to get only part of my money back. Not all of it like he had said mind you. He said we had already signed the paperwork so to bad... I don't know when we'll get our camper delivered. Watch the fiance department is all I can say.... So this place is ridiculous! Dropped my camper off on Dec 7,2017 for a repair of an awning and drive, to check and see what bathtub leaks and a couple other small thing! Was told it probably would be after Jan 1, I was ok with that since my next travel nurse contract didn't start until Jan 22. No communication from these people for a month, called and was told it was not ready they would call when ready. Another month no call, called again was told still waiting on parts. Finally received a call a couple weeks later was told wrong parts sent so it would be a couple off weeks! A month goes by no call! I call and they said still waiting on the stove element to be resent! 5 freakin months from the drop off date I call back and Larry from the service department say well they part has been sitting on the shelf for how long he had no idea, he said well I'm glad you called it's hard to tell how long that would have been sitting up there before we found it! No apologies nothing but excuses from these people! I live in this rig! I had to continue the payments and pay out of pocket for an entire 16 week contract! Oh and there was only a year warranty on the rig and they had the rig for 5.5 months, so now the warranty has ran out! Imagine that! I Lord willing will never have to darken their door step again, I would not recommend buying or having a camper serviced there to anyone!! read more

I just don't understand the lack of customer service at this store. It is dependably awful. I have tried to overlook it for the convenience of picking up some items locally, the prices are no better, or even higher than other stores. It just is not worth it anymore to go there and be subjected to the employees of this management team. Gander went bankrupt once, they will again unless RV sales are great enough to support the business.The sporting goods side of the operation almost seems to pride itself on truly awful service and mistreatment of customers. The most recent visit to the store had an employee treating me and other customers as nusances he just had to unfortunately deal with before he could leave. I stood waiting for this single employee to finish chatting for about 15 minutes. I finally walked over and stood in front of him. I witnessed him ask another customer who was looking at products, "do you want anything", the customer obviously did not enjoy being addressed like that and walked away. I was challeged with "what do you want?" When I told him the product i was interested in he responded with "what about it?". I told him I would like to purchase the product. He said, after looking at the register, that he stopped selling firearm products "now". He stated it was "store policy". "Actually nine minutes ago" was his follow up statement. Apparently making customers wait and then refusing to sell products is "store policy". He seemed really pleased with himself for frustrating a customer and declaring store policy. Really incredible behavior. This store is apparently not interested in serving customers at all. Lots of stores that are happy to take your money are available in the area. Avoid Gander, they are consistently the worst for customer service. It clearly comes from their management and "store policy". Several folks I know have had issues with a male manager there and will not be back. This was the last bad experience for me, lots of others say they have had poor experiences at the store, I should have listened. Gander, fire your management and do some customer service training with your staff. Try to meet customer service requests as valuable to business success. Roanoke has caught on to the store's poor treatment of customers. Bankruptcy part two may be in your future. read more

We had a really bad experience there earlier this year. We came to look at a specific camping trailer that we had seen at another dealership (online, about an hour and a half away). We knew the other dealership had it priced about $2000 cheaper than Gander but wanted to see it in person before deciding to drive out there. The salesman at Gander showed it to us, and without prompting, said they could match another dealership's price. We asked several questions about this and he confirmed they could price match. He even wrote the lower price on the brochure for the trailer. We went home to think it over for an hour and called him back to tell him we were ready to go for it. However in the meantime he said he'd talked to the dealership and said that their price online was not what they were actually selling it for. He tried to convince us they were selling it for $6000 more than it was showing online! My husband had talked to that dealership to see if there were any hidden fees and they said absolutely not, the advertised price is it, not including sales tax. I told the salesman he had promised us a certain price, and to go talk to his manager to see what he could do. He called back shortly thereafter with their "best" price, which was a little less than $2000 more than they'd originally said they'd sell it to us. When I pushed back saying that was too much, he said "Really, what's $2000?" I'll tell you what it is, it's $2000!! He thought he could do a bait and switch on us but it didn't work because we walked away. Later in the week, we sent an email to the manager asking for him to call or write us back to discuss our poor experience, and we never heard back. I can only assume that poor communication and not standing by your word are standard practice for this dealership, and would never shop there again. read more

When I explained that I was 60 miles away she made no effort to see it it was was indeed in stock after telling me the computer inventory was not to be trusted. Needless to say the sale was lost. Worst customer service ever! We needed an inspection prior to our first trip in our newly purchased used RV. First, my husband was told that he had an appointment at 8:30 AM one week from the day he called. He arrived at 8:20 only to be told that they don't make appointments, but that he would be seen shortly. By noon, they still hadn't touched our RV or any of the RVs of the 3 other people who arrived at about the same time. When he asked for his keys back--that he was leaving and to just forget the service, they said, "No, No, we're taking it back now to work on it." Someone got in the vehicle, drove it to the service area, and locked it. Nobody touched it for another 1.5 hours. Finally they started the "45-point inspection". That took more than 2 hours, and they fixed NOTHING! In fact, things were worse after they "worked" on it. They filled the system with water to test it out, and the faucet started spraying all over the interior. The tech said she couldn't fix it--no matching parts, but she never turned off the valve underneath the sink to stop the leak, and she didn't drain the remaining water out. The generator that was cutting off intermittently prior to the service, stopped working entirely after the service (It only has 3 hours on it, so it's practically new). Plus, they didn't even change out the split and worn wiper blades (part of the 45 point inspection and service.) For this waste of time and money, we paid $589. And that didn't include the "wash" which took more than an hour. We are now going back now and double checking fluid levels, etc., for ourselves because we don't trust that they did anything that they promised and that we paid for. The manager and staff seemed more interested in taking breaks, long lunches, and gabbing with their co-workers (sometimes in crude terms in front of the customers) than actually performing any work. The waiting room and men's bathroom were filthy, so the employees aren't spending their time cleaning, that's for sure. Very unprofessional in every possible way. DO NOT STOP HERE! We are local and wish that we could use this company. It would be convenient, but we'll never go back. We'll drive to NC rather than ever go to these people again. read more

Mike M. 4/30/18 We had purchased a new travel trailer last Feb 2017 from the Ashville, NC store and took it to Myrtle Beach in April. We had major water leak in the wall so we took it to Roanoke on the way back to get the warranty work done. In July we went to try to pick it up to make trip to New York that weekend. Trailer was still not repaired so like idiots we decided to trade up to a class A. 2/16/18 we went to the Roanoke store and bought a $1000 couch to go in place of the dinette. We paid for the couch and went to the service dept to schedule installation and to arrange for an extensive service as well as order a new awning. We planned to drop the RV April 7th 2018 and pick up April 21st 2018. we needed the number off the awning to order that day so we told them we would call back with it. (NOTE: we live 125 miles one way from Roanoke.) The service writer said no need that the two weeks would be plenty to get the awning in and installed. We dropped the RV off April 7 (we removed the dinette ourselves to ease install of the couch) $135.00 per hour labor racks up quick. Due to the previous service experience we decided to call and check on the work progress. Our service writer was off until the Wednesday before our pick up date. Five calls and no one to really give a straight answer we reached our service writer Wednesday and was informed the work had been completed early but the awning was on order with no delivery date. We went the 21st to pick up the RV for our long scheduled vacation to find out the awning wasn't even ordered until the 17th. I was furious so the operations manager came out to assist. What a joke. When I asked the why the RV had been there for 10 days before they ordered an awning they had know about since 2/16/18. The ops manager replied it wasn't a service issue it was a store issue since they order the parts. Of course the parts manager on duty blamed the pee-on who wasn't at work that day. We paid our $1400 for work done (I now question if all the work was really done)and would have to come back a week later. They call with the awning in the store the second day of vacation and we "SCHEDULED" the work for 8:30 am on the last day of vacation to prevent having to bring the RV back another 250 miles. We sat in the shop line all night to be there for our 8:30 apmnt. Surprise they check everyone in at 8;30 and do not work on appointment you sit and wait for the service manager to decide its your turn. Needless to say I left and will never darken the door of "ANY" Camping World nor would I refer even my worst enemy to them. I would not give a star at all if I had my way... Drove 4 1/2 hours to pick this particular camper up and one would think knowing that we are going to be arriving... One tie was dry rot and I am sure they would have left us drive off the lot with... Tire wheel cover was missing with exposed metal... Asked about the slide out that seemed to struggle just a bit when they brought it in... Because of course they had it all open when we got there ... Waited and waited to be told that it needed a capture plate after we even asked about it ... To drive home and pick up another day... Bring it home and shame on us did not look or check the rear stabilizers and the motor was shot and has been for a while more money spent that they would not fix ... And now the kicker my slide out that they said absolutely not one thing was wrong ... Took to a dealer to see what was wrong ... Yep someone rigged it just to work for now !!! Really ... No thanks camping world anywhere you will not get my business ever again... so went to a local dealer of coachman chaparrals and trades it !! And absolutely love it !! Camping World is AWESOME . They got us on the road for a family reunion camping trip. Thank you, Camping World, Roanoke!!!

On beginning my return trip from Virginia to California I decided to get an oil change and have the pressure checked on all my tires. Showed up on time for my appointment; had to wait about an hour before the work started. They finished quickly and informed me my right front tire required replacing. I asked if the work could be done today. After figuring out that I didn't know the specifics on the tire, the technician went and looked. I asked if they could get to the work today and they said yes no problem once they picked up the replacement tire. Estimate was for an hour to get the tire and then they would get right on it. That was two and a half hours ago; no news as to when they would start. Note: I had told them I could come back tomorrow to get the work done and they said today would be no problem. At this point I cannot get any good information on the progress - and my RV is still sitting in the parking lot. I told the associate that I could have gone to the movies if I had been given accurate information. Oh well, this Rock N Roll trip just keeps rocking! Redemption, the good folks at Camping World got the job done really fast after they started - about 20 minutes after I posted this review. read more
