We pulled into this little spot coming back from a long week of camping in Telluride. The food was great, the patio shady, the servers friendly. More than that though, this place has a super fan in me now because I left my shirt there. Except. I didn't realize it till north of Fairplay, and I live in Denver. Ruh roh. I called them and expected them to laugh at me when I asked if there was any way they could send it to me. Tried this tonight based on Yelp review. When we got there we were about to turn around and leave because there was a 30-minute wait. I talked to people waiting for a table. They were locals and said it was definitely worth the wait. They were right! Everything was terrific, from the hostess to the servers. The atmosphere and the food. We sat in the bar waiting for our table. The bartender was friendly, funny, and full of good suggestions . He is also the owner. We talked to several locals, all of whom were regulars. All said they have never had bad meal here. We had the pistachio chicken stuffed avocado salad and the Asian chicken salad. Both fabulous. After a 6hr+ hike, I called in an order to-go so I cannot speak for the in-person service, although the hostess taking my order was amiable. I think that Camp Robber generally serves pretty solid food. I was, however, disappointed with my Sonoran Steak Salad. Given the other high ratings, I was expecting a little more oomph to my salad, but it was literally greens, a sprinkling of Gorgonzola, 4 baby tomatoes, and some red onion. I will admit that the steak was cooked well and the dressing (orange-basil vinaigrette) was tasty, however, it's always a little bit of a letdown to think, "I could have made this myself," which is what I thought whilst consuming my food. The key lime pie seemed to be more of a pie-ice cream hybrid as it seemed to melt as I ate my salad. It was, however, light, fluffy, and not overpoweringly limey. This is one of the better restaurants in Montrose, though it's not a field crowded with serious contenders, to be clear. Stylistically, the restaurant is unsure what it's about. There are occasional touches of what might be considered a western aesthetic, but much of the interior descends to the level of the diner, with linoleum in the tables, a cheap short-rug floor, and non-descript, mostly blank walls that not only continue the bland feel of the exterior, but similarly blow a fine opportunity to create meaningful design and ambience. The booth lighting should be considered by anyone contemplating a career in interrogation. The salmon, as one might expect so far inland, was perhaps a bit overcooked (and no options were given), but was topped with a nice pesto and chipotle sauce. A side of vegetables was waxy and tasteless. The hominy, which the menu calls posole, was stripped-down in taste but not bad to my palate; my gourmet mother thought the texture unpleasant and suggested some sauce or cheese to add real flavor. I used to live in Montrose, and I have eaten here several times. The food is good but on the pricey side. There aren't a lot of options for vegetarians, but I have had them "vegetarian-ize" things for me before without problem or complaint. The bar is great - my friends and I wanted a specialty drink that wasn't on the menu and they made it perfectly and gave us a great price! When my parents came out to visit a few years ago, we went here. My dad complains about every place we ever eat. Seriously, he will find SOMETHING to complain about everywhere - the napkin isn't big enough, or there is too much food, or he didn't like that the salad didn't have baby spinach in it. It drives me nuts! This is the ONLY place we have EVER gone where he didn't complain about one thing. NOT ONE THING. So that was amazing in itself right there. read more

Nothing to write home about. The service was very good however. I asked the server about the BBQ cooker that was outside and how often they cook ribs. She didn't have an answer but said the ribs were really good. Ok...so I ordered them. They had no flavor except for the BBQ sauce that was brushed on top before serving. The vegetable side dish was yellow and green beans which came out luke warm as so did the ribs. Overall taste of everything was just average. A little pricey for average tasting food. I dined on an early Saturday night around 5:30pm and it was about half full with senior citizens. That usually tells me that food served has no flavor and is bland. This was definitely the case. The place did fill up with some younger people. I had the ginger rice as a side dish and didn't even taste any ginger in it. It was very dry too. Two bites and I was done with it. read more

Sunday brunch at The Camp Robber in Montrose was a first come first to be seated affair. Upon arrival, the line was out the door and along the sidewalk about 30 people deep. The doors opened and the line began to move. The expected chaos never happened as people were seated very quickly and the efficient and organized staff sprung into action. Water appeared menus were on the table, and drink orders were taken. Wait staff tag teamed the tables and an empty restaurant at 858am turned into a full restaurant at 906am and the staff did not miss a beat. There was no chaos and no cries of "we are really busy." Bread and butter on the table, a recitation of the champagne specials, and easy going smiles all around. Without even noticing there was water, coffee, and mimosas on the table and the food order had been taken. Too many people have a Mel's Diner mentality and think food should appear within 4 minutes with a cheerful side of "kiss my grits!" People need to calm down and understand that well prepared food with good presentation takes some time. This is especially true when the kitchen staff is required to go from 0 to 100 and not miss a beat. Relax, drink your coffee and mimosa, the food will arrive in due time. This is Sunday brunch and not a stop at the Quicky Mart. The pancakes were the size of dinner plates, light and fluffy, as they should be. The crab benedict was aromatic and flavorful and the eggs were cooked as requested. The side of fruit had kiwi and blackberries, which is downright civilized. I love Camp Robber. I travel to Montrose to work quite frequently and eat here nearly every time. The food really is wonderful. I haven't eaten everything on the menu and really enjoy the basil salmon (comes with a baked potato, which means I can splurge on a yummy dessert). The ahi tuna salad is also super good as well as the queso dip. Kind of a diverse menu, which I love because I know I'll get really great service no matter what I'm in the mood for. Their wine selection is wonderful. I have had the opportunity to speak with Kim several times, who is one of the owners. She always recognizes me and welcomes me back, which means a lot to someone who is hyper-focused on client service. Last time I was in Montrose, I was running late from work and called to see if it was too late to order take-out. The kitchen was closed and instead of making me feel like "that guy", the hostess asked me if I could hold while she checked to see if the chef could whip something up for me. This was an interesting stop for us. We were heading through Montrose and were needed a place to eat, but I also needed a place to do some work, so wifi was a must. After doing a quick search on the yelp app, Camp Robber came up as an option. We called to verify the wifi, and off we went. We over shot our entrance the first time, as it is a little tricky to get into, but once were were there we were pleasantly surprised by all. The menu is HUGE, its like reading a Dickens Novel. If there isn't something on it that looks good, you are on some form of starvation protest diet. They have everything from mexican to italian. They have a decent wine list and a decent beer list. The atmosphere is difficult to capture in words, but it felt like a fancy midwestern diner to me. Very cozy and booth focused, without feeling cheap. The wifi signal was great, and allowed me to get a lot of work done, and the food was also great. Very yummy green chili. I had pork loin, my wife had fish and shrimp. Both were very tasty. We aren't in Montrose a ton, but it is safe to say we are fans of Camp Robber and will stop in again when we are. read more

Travelling with a dog, it's hard to find good places to eat with patios that allow dogs. This place looked interesting, and turned out great for us. The staff was very nice, allowed us to bring our dog through a back gate to the patio. There was only one other family dining there, maybe because there was live music playing inside, where most people were sitting. Anyway, there were lots of intriguing choices for vege-fish eaters on the menu, and we chose beer battered shrimp and a black bean tostada salad. The food was very good, it's basically New Mexico style southwest cuisine, and lots of it. The portions were large and the prices reasonable. The patio was very nice, it's fenced in so no street view, with a little grass area. There is a parking lot out back. Overall, I think I'd go back if I was in the area again. read more

After getting two very enthusiastic recommendations for this place, I had to try it during a brief visit to Montrose. This place has a great menu. There are so many choices that it was difficult to decide what to try. My favorite part of the meal was the appetizer--fried poblano pepper strips with a yummy queso/salsa. What a treat! They had just the right amount of spice. For dinner, I had spinach and black bean enchiladas, which were very tasty. Both the green and red chile were good. The rice was made with lots of ginger--what an interesting twist. I wish that I'd saved room for a house made dessert. They have a ton of options. There was live music in the bar too. read more

Montrose is a 6 hour drive from home for us. We visited Camp Robber in 2018, and were so impressed that we returned last week while traveling. It was a Friday evening, they were busy, but we were seated immediately. Everyone from the hostess to our server was beyond friendly and accommodating. The food was fabulous (a shrimp quesadilla for me, Thai peanut pasta with chicken for my husband). We had a chance to chat with the manager (I believe, she's been there for 13 years), who we met and chatted with last year. It was a perfect experience in every way. Passing through Montrose, CO? We were in town for a wedding and needed to grab lunch before the ceremonies later in the afternoon; the hotel recommended Camp Robber and we're glad they did. We went in on a Thursday at lunch time and the place was busy, but we were seated quickly and had our drinks delivered just as quick. The menu has something for everyone, our party had an entree' salad, shrimp quesadilla and fish & chips; all of us enjoyed our food. The food was well prepared and quite flavorful, perfect portions; not too much, not too little! The staff was friendly and efficient! I was ordering food for six people during a training session. The staff was very helpful as I had never eaten here before. For food we settled on steak and chicken enchiladas and quesadillas as well. For sides we chose rice and the cheesy rice (I can't remember the name). The food was al delicious and everyone was very glad that we ordered from Camp Robber. Even the trainer who is visiting from Canada was glad. He had been there previously and was very pleased with the service for their dinner menu as well. I'll definitely be going back. We went to visit the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and figured we probably wouldn't have any food options out here but we were stoked to find this place! We ordered a vegan salad and vegan jackfruit tamales and both were delicious. The tamales weren't on the menu but they offered them to us when we called. The server seemed to actually understand what vegan was and even offered suggestions. We called the order in and it was ready within 15 minutes. On the way to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, and chose this place for lunch with help from Yelp. My wife ordered the green chile chicken salad and raved about how good it tasted. I ordered the Turkey Herder sandwich with cole slaw as the side. This sandwich was very good, but I scraped off the Fireball-grilled onions. I just didn't like the flavor. The cole slaw, however, was creamy and tasted quite good. I wanted the key lime cheesecake, but had no room for it, maybe next time in Montrose. read more

This is the best restaurant in Montrose. We come a few times a month and have never been disappointed. Their Sunday brunch is fantastic. They provide a big basket of delicious quick breads for an appetizer, have a great special quiche each week, and even have some good lunch options if you aren't a huge bfast fan. Other meals are great too. The pistachio shrimp is excellent. The prices are reasonable. Only complaint is that sometimes service is a bit slow, but all things considered, blows the other restaurants in town out of the water. read more

I had the green chile pistachio pork tenderloin, which was phenomenal. The low stars aren't coming from my meal, but from my companions and the service. One of my diners had the chile relleno, and it came out cold. Not luke warm, but cold. Another has the Cajun pasta, and it showed up luke warm. Pasta should arrive with a little steam on it, especially in such a thick cream sauce. Trying to flag down our waitress to get it remedied was an exercise in futility. She was nice once we did get her attention, but there were just not enough waitstaff in the restaurant.
