Yesterday the crew was here for the recent job of removing concrete landing step ( which started to fall apart during the winter) and replacing it with a granite step. I asked the day they finished as I wasn't home the day they installed and they said it wasn't necessary and would have to remove whole thing to do it, I'm not an A hole so I just agreed to pay the 3k because they were good people and I didn't want to inconvenience them but now knowing I'll have to remove everything just to replace that piece of wood is not sitting well with me. Overall it doesn't look great to me and I expected more for that price. I gave 2 stars instead of 0 because the 2 brothers were very professional and seemed like good guys. They were the most expensive quote and I decided to use based off reviews , photos and how great the owner was in person. I hate giving good people 2 stars but I have to be honest .

The same thing happened. Zine decided to return the third time and replace the problematic sections that were separating from the foundation. It is now the middle of October and I continue to have the same issue. He said he'll return and has not yet. He has suggested that I need to paint | seal the stucco. I want to do that but first need to know that it does not separate from the foundation so I don't waste my effort. Update on Oct 24. Zine came out to meet with me today. I now understand we had a miscommunication. He said he is a man of his word and I believe him. I will post photos of the new work and results. It might be in the Spring since the weather is getting too cold for stucco work.

After some gusty days, I found our chimney's rain cap in my backyard, which was the push I needed…read moreto look into finding a contractor for long overdue work on our chimney and front steps. See the before pictures for the chimney, I don't have one handy for the steps, but the mortar was missing from between a lot of the bricks, and the limestone slabs were wobbly and not adhered to the step anymore. Chris responded to the request quickly and came out for an assessment, providing estimates both for a repair and a full rebuild of the front steps, and a repair of the chimney. Both very reasonable and in line with estimates from other businesses. We spoke last Friday, Chris had the formal contracts to me by Sunday, and the team was here first thing Tuesday morning working on the steps. They worked quickly but thoroughly, and were on to the work on the chimney by mid-day Wednesday. Once they were up there, they noticed some issues that weren't visible from the ground view, and Chris walked me through it with the photos and quickly got a revised estimate for what it would look like to do a rebuild of the chimney versus the repair, while also indicating that they COULD still do just the repair, but recommended rebuilding, since he knew we'd be looking to also redo the roof soon. They managed to do the full take down of the chimney to just a few bricks below the roof line and rebuild it back up by the end of the day Thursday, and came back Friday just to install the rain cap and clean up the the materials from the demolished chimney and stairs. Our new steps and chimney look great, and I'll definitely be keeping Kings' contact on file for paving/masonry/foundation work we might need in the future!

Working with Masonworks has been a roller coaster. They are very, very good at the masonry aspect,…read morebut we had a negative experience with everything outside of the excellent stone walls and patio they built for us. They have built beautiful flat stone walls for us in our front and back yards. We were very impressed with them after the first job they did for us in our front yard a few years ago, so we did not even look at other companies when we wanted to spruce up our backyard this year. The garden walls they built in the backyard were once again beautiful. However, as a gardener, I was disappointed and frustrated by the following things: - Our contract included 50/50 loam compost for the new garden beds. During the job, we caught them filling the beds with the grass they had pulled up from our old lawn and asked them to stop doing that. - When I went to start planting, I found that the garden beds had only a layer of new soil but that my shovel quickly hit a lot of big rocks and uncovered old soil, debris, and trash. - They completely trampled and destroyed my established perennial garden, which was located in a garden bed above where the new beds were built. They also broke several pavers in a little garden path I had and removed them without replacing them. - They recommended microclover for my lawn and seeded it for us as part of the contract, but it grew in quite spotty despite us maintaining it properly with daily waterings. I contacted them about the first issue and their initial response was to tell me that the stones I was finding were part of the wall construction - this was not the case. They had someone come out to take a look and concluded that the soil did need to be replaced, which they finally did. It is much better now, though I still have found some large stones in it. However, in the process of solving that issue, they caused the second one - many of the perennials that my mother and I had worked to plant over the past four years were totally destroyed. They offered me a credit to compensate for the loss, or the option to have them reinstall new flowers, but by that point I just didn't want them near my garden anymore so accepted the credit. I didn't bother contacting them about the spotty lawn - I threw down some grass seeds yesterday to try and fill in the gaps. While I appreciated that they did eventually take steps to resolve the issues, I found it quite frustrating to have to keep reaching out just to get them to do what they really should have done in the first place. They never did a final walkthrough as I've seen other contractors do. No apology for destroying my garden. They have a Benjamin Franklin quote, "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten" - I definitely felt some of that bitterness throughout this process. My conclusion is that they are really excellent masons but do not understand or respect gardens. If you hire them, be prepared to have to deal with that.

Gulp! James's crew worked for days in the heat and did what appears to be a fine and handsome job. Not being a mason I can't really evaluate their work, although it has poured since, and all is well, not the case before. Nice guys and dependable as to schedule. Everything on handshake; I will ask for at least some minimal paperwork and guarantee.

While I asked multiple times for a new quote, I never received one and we were going to deal with billing at the end (not something I preferred, but my chimney was coming down). During the rebuild, they broke our skylight to which our main POC didn't answer his phone. We went out to buy the tarp to cover it up. The patio work was done poorly and the "rebuild" of the chimney (no new flashing) was another $2,500 (a made up number given quotes we received from other chimney / masonry services + that was the quote we got to fix the skylight with a new custom window (which they broke)). James was just trying to get out of the deal after breaking the skylight and rushed through the job as he was going to lose money. They aren't trustworthy and don't get scammed by them as I was; not a good hire.
