My family loves all the different cupcake flavors at Camarillo Cupcake so I decided to order a custom cake for my daughter's birthday. I walked in with a design (and pictures) in mind but they couldn't do it and walked out ordering a plain vanilla 6 inch cake. I guess I was hoping for some ideas/suggestions on what they could do for me but all I got was, "you can order cake decorations on Amazon" which I ended up doing since all I got was a plain vanilla cake. Camarillo Cupcake made our wedding cake as well as wedding cupcakes! We had the Ube with coconut frosting for our cake and half of the cupcakes and lemon meringue for the other half of cupcakes. We were SO happy with the flavors. Gina is terrific to work with and all of our guests were so surprised by the non-traditional flavors. At first we had taste tested other bakeries but we felt a lot of the flavors were very limited and also way too sweet and grainy. My daughter is a vegan and wanted vegan cake for her birthday. After my wife and my daughter tried valiantly to bake a cake, we wanted to get something ready to go. I went to camarillo cupcakes and they were so friendly and helpful. We got a dozen - six vegan lemon raspberry, two snickerdoodle, two red velvet, and two lemon. Camarillo Cupcake has done a great job in remodeling and opened up a larger kitchen to support their growth. I requested a plain frosted style and added cake topper from Etsy and real flowers from our florist to decorate it. Oh My Gosh! Best cupcakes I have ever had in my entire life. Red Velvet: 5/5 classic red moist cake with cream cheese frosting and sprinkles! Perfectly sweet. Snickers: 4/5 this cupcake was very good as well, chocolate with snickers on top and filling of peanuts and caramel or nougat? This one was waaaay too sweet for me. Very good but very rich! If that's what you are going for, then this is perfect Lemon: 5/5 wow, this one was mind blowing! The cupcake was so perfectly baked and moist! The buttercream was cream cheese with hints of lemon zest and a lemon drop on top! This is the one you need to try if you are going to try any of them. I wish they had a vegan one! It seems like they had hundreds of flavors. Since I wasn't going to do a tasting I just had to pick a flavor. We choose a candy bar theme on our 3 layers. Bottom layer was m&m this was the layer we cut ourselves and gave each other a bite, right after we put it in our mouth we were like wow this is actually really good ! Layer 2 was snickers And I have no idea what it tasted like I didn't get a chance to eat it. Our top layer was almond joy. This layer was for us to save for our 1 year anniversary but since we loved the m&m layer so much we cut open the top layer and enjoyed most of it the day after the wedding. It was amazing (I still have a few slices for our 1 year anniversary) If you are out of town and you can't do a tasting let me tell you Camarillo cupcakes made the best wedding cake I've ever had. I bought a cupcake, and it seemed fresh and tasted moist, a bit sweet for me, but good. the price per cupcake seemed high at $4 per cupcake, and the selection was very limited. The part that really got me was the girl at the counter who used her hands with no gloves or tongs to put the cupcake in the box. From a hygiene standpoint, they should use some protection when serving the public, as I don't know if prior to me ordering, she touched her hair, money, etc... I ordered cupcakes for a baby shower and rented a display stand from Camarillo cupcake. The hardest part was deciding which flavors to order! We settled on a dozen each of chocolate and strawberry lemon. Everyone loved the cupcakes at the shower and commented the flavor and texture are better then the acclaimed Sprinkles cupcakes. The chocolate especially is so packed with chocolate flavor - definitely recommend! Not many bakeries in Camarillo to pick from for events like this so I'm glad we have Camarillo cupcake now. PRICING: Each = $3.50 Half dozen = $20 Dozen = $38 Tried the following 6 flavors, ranked in order of personal preference: LEMON = my favorite out of the bunch. Perfect sweetness level with lovely lemon flavor throughout. I would come back specifically for this one. RED VELVET = good flavor balance of chocolate cake (with plenty of chocolate chips in the batter!) and luscious, smooth cream cheese frosting CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER = this is for the Reese's lovers out there! The mini peanut butter cup garnish on top was unnecessary since the frosting was almost spot on for Reese's peanut butter cream, making this entire thing taste like a giant peanut butter cup. SALTED CARAMEL = enjoyed the touch of sea salt sprinkle on top, but the excessively sweet frosting combined with the caramel drizzle overpowered the cake. Speaking of salt, take my assessment with a grain of salt -- this cupcake was my husband's favorite. COOKIES & CREAM = cake was slightly dry, but I appreciated the chunks of cookie bits in the batter. Once again, frosting was overwhelmingly sweet. I love love love sweets and was surprised at how multiple flavors were just too saccharine for me. WHITE CHOCOLATE RASPBERRY = sorry, did not enjoy any aspect of this flavor except for the single raspberry fruit on top. The frosting was ABSURDLY SWEET, well beyond enjoyment, and the cake part was dry. After one bite, threw the rest away -- which I was not happy about since these cupcakes are not cheap. Service was friendly enough. Definitely not the exuberant or warm welcoming vibe with smiles that I expected during a grand opening week, but at least cordial. Admittedly, I'm a cupcake snob. Camarillo Cupcake falls short of my taste expectations. It's very tough for me to find a place that makes better recipes than me. (I do not sell cupcakes. Just a foodie/hobbyist baker.) Vanilla- uh oh. This one was under baked!!! The batter was still somewhat raw in the center. The flavor was just okay. The icing didn't wow me either. Strawberry- great real strawberry flavor...but it was dense. It would have been so much better if the cake was light and fluffy. I also would have preferred a lighter strawberry buttercream frosting. Lemon- heck no. This is one of the most talked about flavors I've seen people review. It tastes just like Trix cereal to me. Overly sweet. And the frosting is runny. Cookie butter- nope. Also dense. And this flavor seems completely out of place. It should be featured in the fall. Chocolate- the only option that I thought was decent. Fluffy, good frosting taste. BUT, not the best I've ever had. It's not a wow. Overall, not worth the calories. I'm rooting for this place though. Camarillo needs a cupcake shop. Work on the recipes, you can do better. read more
