We chose California Grill & Bar for my mom's memorial reception on 04/25/2028 because it was conveniently located across the street from the mortuary. The manager, Mr. Rolando, has the biggest heart. He was truly a blessing to us, an angel sent from heaven. We only inquired about the venue five days before the event since we had to wait for the memorial date and time to be finalized. Mr. Rolando went above and beyond to accommodate us. He even canceled a music event they had already organized for that Saturday and gave us the entire patio for our private gathering. The food was amazing. We ordered the grilled salmon, London broil beef, rice pilaf, salad, bread, and strawberry lemonade for $35 per person for 80 pax. The staff were top-notch and made sure there was always enough food for everyone. Everything went smoothly. The ambiance was beautiful, and having our own private access and space made it even more special. Highly recommended! read more

If you are in a pinch for a big group, this is a good spot to try for brunch. We came here after a sound bath event at Penn Park and we got a table 7 quickly. It wasn't too crowded and we got our food within 15 to 20 minutes so we also did not wait long. The food was typical diner menu and I got the breakfast sandwich which was good and perfectly filling. The service was good and the waitress brought us our food in a timely manner. read more

My mom and I have lunch here often, especially after going to the movies, and today we brought our grandson with us. The food is always top-notch, the service is usually excellent, and the atmosphere is upbeat and welcoming. Unfortunately, today's visit was not a great experience. I won't mention names because this isn't about calling anyone out--it's about providing constructive feedback. Our server lacked attentiveness throughout our meal. We waited about 12 minutes for drink refills, and he never once checked in to see how we were doing or if we needed anything. We were each given only one napkin, and I ended up giving mine to my grandson after his fell off his lap. It was also clear that our server was struggling. When he finally brought our refills, he had several drinks on a tray. He set ours down, delivered one drink to the table next to us, and then stopped to take another table's order--all while leaving two iced teas sitting on his tray that belonged to another guest. I watched that guest eventually get up, take the drinks off the tray, and bring them back to their own table. So it wasn't just our table that experienced a lack of attention. In situations like this, it's okay to ask for help. A food runner or a shift leader could have stepped in to help keep guests taken care of. By the time we left, our table still had six glasses and three empty plates sitting on it. There had been no pre-busing throughout the meal. I wanted to share this because we genuinely enjoy dining here and will continue to come back. Feedback is priceless, and I hope this helps ensure future guests receive the level of service we've come to expect from this restaurant. read more

I come here often with my family since it's close to home, and we always have a good time. The newporter is my mom's favorite. I love the sandwiches, pasta, and brunch! Their sweet potato fries are soooo good! With their honey mustard, YUM! The service is great and it's pretty inside. Always a great time here and it's in a cute area to walk around after read more

Stopped by after a morning run and it hit the spot. I ordered the extra omelette with avocado, and they were not stingy with it. It came with sourdough bread and house potatoes, really good and super filling. The fresh squeezed orange juice was also fresh and refreshing. The menu is pretty diverse, from breakfast to sandwiches and salads so you can't go wrong. What stood out the most was the service, friendly, welcoming, and the space was clean. A soiled go to place with small or big groups. read more

I discovered this place at a Yelp event in Long Beach and thought that their pasta they served was absolutely phenomenal, so I looked through my bag of goodies and found a coupon there for $10 off and went. When I got there, I ordered the jalapeño tequila pasta I had at the Yelp event again and it was just as I remembered it. It had that nice kick from the jalapeños that blended perfectly with the creamy sauce and was absolutely irresistible. Definitely worth the drive from Los Angeles for that alone. They served us free and warm bread at the beginning, which was nice. Their tequila sampler included premium brands like Casamigos, Don Julio, Cassadores and more, and was only $34 for 4 two ounce shots. Quite a deal as that came out to about $8.50 a shot. The California skins, which are the potato skins with cheese, bacon and tomato on top were under $6 and absolutely a delight. It's almost impossible to find a place that makes twice baked potatoes, but these were so rich and creamy and I loved them as well. My friend got an ultimate burger, which was stacked with a burger patty and pastrami, which was really good as well. If I ate it alone, I would've said that it was a top quality burger, however when compared to the pasta and other dishes, it didn't hold up to the spotlight of those dishes. The sweet potato fries tasted exactly as you would expect for them to. This place has a fish tank at the front which is very calming and relaxing to watch. The staff is super attentive and nice. I'm so happy I got to eat one of the best pastas I ever ate again and I'm looking forward to coming back here often. Even though it's close to an hour drive from La, I love it! read more

First of all the food was good and I think the menu is well thought out. The service was awful. If you are having a party on the patio hire more staff. This is truly on management. One guy there with a cast on his wrist was doing everything! The 2 young women were barely managing their tables. These two older guys stood there. I was grateful that one of them got me my "to go" boxes but they just stood there while everyone else was scurrying around. The kitchen definitely seemed to be on task. But management has no business having patio parties if they don't have the wait staff. Also, this may sound cheap but don't expect to get more than 15% tip if you ignore people. read more

Amazing Breakfast!! Everything we ordered was delicious. The French toast was perfectly cooked, soft on the inside with just the right amount of sweetness. The Mediterranean skillet was packed with fresh ingredients, well-seasoned, and full of flavor. It was a hearty, satisfying breakfast. The coffee was also excellent and paired perfectly with the meal. The service was friendly, and the atmosphere made it a great spot to relax and enjoy breakfast. We'll definitely be back to try more of the menu. Highly recommend if you're looking for a tasty breakfast! read more

Nice ambiance , quick service, but most importantly to a customer, the FOOD. I ordered Chicken Marsala . The serving had a few thinly sliced chicken pieces & some mushrooms. When you have to keep moving around your pasta in hopes of getting something on your fork other than just pasta, it's disappointing. Driving home I didn't want to sound unappreciative for having dinner out, so I wasn't going to mention anything. BUT, when my husband said, BOY! did my sandwich suck. I was expecting a good sandwich, it hardly had any meat in it. My suggestion California Grill, is that you start being more generous with your ingredients. Can't say we'll be back soon. read more

I was here about 7 years ago and the food was just ordinary BUT my recent visit a few days ago was EXCELLENT. I was very impressed with the food presentation, service and how delicious my meal was. Our server Titus provided us with amazing and attentive service. He was also very knowledgeable about the menu which helped us in our choices. I also noticed that the restaurant ambience was much nicer than I remembered. It felt more open and bright. Overall an excellent dining experience! read more

I wish I had pictures but I was too busy enjoying the yummy breakfast! I got the garden omelette and it had zuccini, carrots, and some fresh veggies with cheese. What a great little spot! They have a full bar and a great menu. I ordered the Chicken Marsala, which was delicious! It was a healthy portion for a lunch order and came with some cheese toast. My friend ordered the Newporter Chicken Sandwich and she liked it. The only thing that would have made her meal better would have been crunchier fries. Our server was very friendly and attentive. I would definitely recommend this place and I would go back. They have their own parking, though it's a small lot. There is street parking nearby. read more

As a Whittier local this has always been a place I'd visit. The service is always great, the selection of menu items is awesome. This place is always busy and gets a little loud but I don't mind. This place has gone down significantly from food to service. Horrible service! They run the business like it was their opening day. Booked a Mother's Day reservation and was given a 45 minute to an hour wait time but the person behind me was sat right away because they were a party of 3 and we were 5. We've been coming here for years despite all the changes and the manager who doubled as the bar tender gave every excuse despite me calling the evening prior and gave service as poor as the host. read more

The food service is horrible the lady that was serving me and she didn't even know what she was doing. She had to take three rounds walking around to make sure she actually got the food, right we asked for water for everybody and she forgot and she didn't get a served for like 1 hour the Ambiance whole mood was horrible she was spilling everything we ask for straws and we had to ask 2 times for her to give us straws if I would give 0 stars I would also the water glass was dirty the plate dirty read more

Overall, as always everything went well. However, the Chicken Marcella was lacking in that the chicken was tough compared to tender. For the most part you will get more compliments from this if the chicken is tender so it was really disappointing to get it tough! Other than that, all went well. Arnold PS For a come back; it was disappointing indeed; maybe next time! Oh, Valerie passed away 2 years ago, but I was there with my two daughters; we will try again. read more

Had a long outdated reunion with my HS teacher here on a Saturday for lunch. Apparently, he's a regular there who loves their food and service. Waitstaff were gracious and did not rush us to order as we notified them that we were going to be hanging out there for a while so they often came around to refill their coffees. Although it was busy, it was not loud so we were able to catch up easily. I ordered the CA omelet with home fries, sour dough bread and salsa. It had spinach, tomato, feta and it actually tasted healthy and not drenched in oil as other places like to do with their breakfast foods. I enjoyed it. They have American breakfast all day and also American lunch entrees. Free private lot parking. Right across from Whittier College. It was a very relaxed and nice restaurant to meet up with old friends so I highly recommend it. read more

Don't go here. There's way better restaurants in Whittier. They've gone so down hill. This restaurant was a family favorite for over 30 years until today. We made Mother's Day reservations for 6 a week in advance but that didn't matter. We still waited 55 minutes for our table. When they finally did seat us, they literally seated our party of 6 in separate booths.. 3 and 3. What the heck. I made a stink considering it's our last Mother's Day together as a family for a while as my Mom moves to NC this year. They then seated us in the patio together where we then waited 35 minutes to order our food. We then literally waited an hour and 25 minutes for our food to come out. My poor Mom who's diabetic and so patient needed some kind of sustenance in her. I asked for something to hold her over and the waiter did bring a blueberry muffin. When the food finally came, my poor starving niece had a hair in her pancakes and grossly undercooked bacon. The rest of our food was lukewarm and not as good as usual. Good.. but not as good as usual. We asked for the manager multiple times, who apparently also doubled as the bartender.. she never came and our waiter finally told us if we wanted to speak to her we'd have to go see her inside. Our waiter was nice throughout, and I did feel bad for much of the staff including the hostess who bore the brunt of so many frustrated patrons due to the absolutely horrible planning on the manager's part. This restaurant has been here so long, how do they not have it together?? Especially on Mother's Day? We won't be back. It's a family memory now. read more

This place was amazing from front to back. The restaurant is cute, it reminds me of like a chilis/applebees kind of restaurant but with a homier feeling. All the food in these picture cost 77 dollars portions sizes were HUGE. I was with one other person and we didn't even finish half of what was shown lol. Service was great, Our server, Maritza, was great, food came out no more than 15ish minutes after ordering. Everything tasted fresh and well seasoned. California food-themed, family-friendly spot in Downtown Whittier. Place is popular so parking is limited. Pretty big on the inside and the menu is large, with so many options. Reminds me a bit of the Cheesecake Factory's menu. Very well-staffed crew that's attentive and helpful. Everything they serve here is generous; the portions are humongous. Ordered the following: - Country Club sandwich - 7.5/10: Large turkey club sandwich stuffed with fresh tomatoes and lettuce, with generous portions of turkey. Big plate of food. - Fries - 6.5/10: seasoned a bit, but lacked a little crunch and was a bit uninspiring. As stated, there's a lot of menu items to explore, so given the amount of food you get and the price point, I think it definitely merits a return. read more

Been wanting to come here for awhile and I finally went last night. The food here is really good, atmosphere was nice, and they had live music outside, only thing I didn't care for was the service, the service was not good. Waitress never once came to check on us, only time we interacted with her is when she took our order and brought us our our check. She was no where to be found and it wasn't even that busy. We had been done eating for about 10-15 min and we had to ask someone else to call our waitress. Once she finally came over she didn't offer us dessert or any refills. So if you don't mind slow service then I recommend this place because the food is pretty good. read more

The food a California grill is not only generously portioned, but also absolutely delicious! Whenever I am in the Whittier area, I always hit this place up and end up staying for appetizers, my meal, and their desserts! The ambience is upbeat and lively, and when you enter, they have this cute photo mirror thing that you can take pictures at. They recently renovated it, and it looks spectacular! Purchased tix for California Grill's 4-course meal and Blanton's whiskey tasting event. For $75/person, we figured that was a great price since Blanton's is such a great whiskey. Oh boy was it a great price! The staff treated us like royalty with their amazing service and what seemed to be non-stop food. The whiskey rep kept bringing around whiskey to taste and the staff also brought us an amazing cocktail. The waitresses made sure we had everything we wanted and the owner Nick took time to speak with everybody. At the end of the event, they gave each couple a bottle of whiskey to take home. I can't wait for their next tasting event! Word is that it's going to be a tequila tasting. read more

This place was a family favorite, they have tried to make it a more upscale place, it was warm and cozy, now cold and featureless. The food selection has been pared down. I would've never have eaten here if it wasn't for Yelp! This restaurant was at many yelp events and one time they served their Tequila jalapeño pasta, which is AMAZING! Especially with their garlic cheese bread! I've also had the Smokey mountain high sandwich with avocado, cheddar cheese, mayo & mustard on garlic cheese sourdough bread. It's super delicious! It just has a little too much meat. But ever since that night I first tried the pasta.....I WAS HOOKED!!! I have been taking all my friends and family here, and I myself have dined in multiple times. I have also ordered to go, and even had food delivered through Uber Eats which have been ALL bad experiences unfortunately... I'm not sure what it is but Every time I order through Uber Eats, the person taking my order at the restaurant NEVER LISTENS to my requests that I can't ask for on uber eats! So I have to call & ask for them to remove stuff. Something always goes wrong.... 3 times I ordered Uber Eats & 3 times my order was wrong. So i haven't ordered since! The first time my order was wrong, the manager was nice & told me to come back for new food. The 2nd time it was wrong, this woman who claimed to be the manager was plain rude & said she couldn't do anything for me & that she WOULDN'T do anything for me. & the 3rd time... I was asked why I couldn't go over there to get my food remade because that was all they could do! & that was the last straw on ordering uber eats for me! Especially cause it was too expensive anyways! I was being charged CRAZY DELIVERY FEES since the driver had to pickup the food in whittier and deliver the food in Anaheim! So for me to get my order wrong & the fact, that they didn't even care & gave me THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE is just wrong! I paid TOO much for that nonsense for them to treat me with such disrespect. To be honest I feel like giving 0 stars for the horrible treatment... but I'm better than that. 3 stars for the good food. And the food ALONE. cause the service here SUCKS. they truly lack customer service. The environment is the worst. read more
