Besides my run-in with that nasty Jerusalem Cricket, I recently saw a white flash dart along the floor into the bathroom. I peeked my head in and there he was, Mickey's adorable and tiny cousin. He looked at me, I looked at him and we both screamed. Since he was so cute, I did not grab 2 shoes, a hangar and the vacuum cleaner but rather a brown paper bag so we could take that tiny baby to a field far, far away. He was a quick one though and managed to evade our capture, sliding (I kid you not) UNDER a closed door. At any rate, after much chase and wringing my hands, the little thing crawled into my dog's kong toy. Needless to say, the kong and it's new resident now lives in a field way up the street. I called California Exterminating Service because they offer detective services of sorts (they can usually tell how these animals are getting in the house). Kevin sent one of his guys over pretty quickly and they discovered a hole in a screen near the roof that DIRECT TV had cut in order to drop cable into the upstairs. With a very tall ladder, some glue-like substance and a smile, California Exterminating Service fixed the hole and I have not seen any new tiny creatures as of late (knock on wood). We had started getting bitten by what we thought were fleas last Monday. Put out water traps, sprinkles diatomaceous earth, vacuumed, etc. No sign of fleas. Thursday, my poor son got over a dozen bites overnight. Frantically called several exterminators. All wanted a free evaluation visit Monday. Way too long to wait when we were being eaten alive! Finally got a call from Kevin, and he instantly diagnosed the problem over the phone: rat mites. Most importantly, we got a next day appointment for immediate treatment! (we confirmed the mites after swiffering and finding two crawling pieces of what looked like dust). Kevin is such an amazing character! Friendly and informative. I enjoyed chatting with him after he rat proofed our roof, put out traps in the attic, and fogged the attic with nontoxic stuff to kill the mites. Friday and Saturday night we heard a large trapped rodent scurrying around. Sunday, it finally stopped. I can't believe I never wrote a review before. We've been using this company for over 10 years. Kevin and his team are thorough and knowledgeable. I first called them when I was getting bit by some unseen bugs for months and Kevin helped us figure out that we had rats in the attic that had mites! He helped us get rid of the rats which solved the mite issue. It was such a relief. Over the years I have had to call him for various things...more rats, fleas from raccoons. We live in the flats of Oakland but you'd think we live in the woods with all these random animals roaming around. Kevin and is team have been very helpful through each of these situations and have helped me even if it meant coming out multiple times. I've never been charged up front for a service so not sure some of the reviewers are talking about. He modernized his payment system so now you can also pay via credit card. It depends on whom you get. Kevin the owner is professional and punctual, as you would expect from the owner. On the other hand, we got Dino yesterday. He spent plenty of time telling us what he CAN'T do as opposed to what he CAN, however he did suggest a trick for checking for rats: cut an apple in half, screw it to a board, place it where you think the rats are coming from, and check it in a few days. Dino clearly doesn't care to be there, so see if you can set something up with Kevin. Too bad I left my pet snake in Albuquerque for good with a friend. Natural pest control. read more

We have used CES in the past two times with no issues. Then, we got what I thought were either drain flies or fruit flies.... Kevin sent over Bobby to drop off a canister of repellent; he who never went in to verify the type of pests, but said I could go online to Youtube to understand how to use the repellent. That canister and brief conversation was $65.00. I was told to spray it in the kitchen sink where the pests seemed to be coming from. We endured a terrible infestation, so I called back. Kevin told me in a frustrated manner that I needed to put the treatment into all of the sink drains of our house, and to call him back at the end of the week, but not in the afternoon! He was terse with me on the phone and I couldn't get any more questions in. The canister got clogged up, so I had to buy more (this time from the Internet). I administered it down all the drains for a week to give it a chance thinking I did it wrong the first time around. No change, flying insects everywhere in our kitchen: all over the window, in the sinks, on our refrigerator, inside of it, ugh. So, I called back last Thursday and left a message for Kevin through their answering service. Neither Kevin nor anyone from the company called me back. I ended up calling Orkin who came in the next day, diagnosed the issue as gnats, not fruit flies or drain flies, and began the treatments. It was clear this was the proper way to kill the buggers! Very disappointed in CES as I prefer to remain loyal to local companies and not the franchises. read more

So... For whatever reason, the two 30-something-year-old guys living next door who spend most of their at-home time drinking beer, shooting pool & playing loud video games have a half-dozen hummingbird feeders in their back yard. I've got nothing against hummingbird feeders, per se, but a half-dozen in a 64-square foot area seems a bit excessive, and to have been hung there by a couple of beer-swigging, pool-shooting, gaming 35-year-old guys is a bit incongruous. Whatever... Thing is, these hummingbird feeders attract more than just hummingbirds. Turns out that lots of paper wasps & yellow jackets show up to party, too. We hung traps, but they do only part of the job. The wife says yesterday, "There's a whole bunch of wasps hanging out on the wood eave outside the sliding glass door." I look, and they're not just hanging out; they're swarming. It's pretty clear they're building a nest -- quickly. These things can be pretty nasty, and there are a lot of them, so I decide against the do-it-yourself route & look for an expert. I call California Exterminating Service in the early-afternoon and explain the situation to the guy who answers the phone. He says, somewhat brusquely, "OK. Give me your information, and I'll pass along the message." Something about the way he's talking, I ask: "Oh, sorry. Are you in the office, or are you an answering service?" Not that it matters except I may have just wasted a lot of this guy's time explaining things he doesn't need to know. "Answering service," he replies. I give him my information & ask whether California Exterminating Service is open, meaning, "Are they doing business during the coronapocalypse?" Answering Service Guy says they are but admits he doesn't know what hours they keep or when they might return my call. Interesting... Under these circumstances, I get off the phone & decide I can't pin my hopes to California Exterminating Service; so, I call the other guys. Within a few hours, I get three phone calls & two voicemails from someone using a phone with blocked caller ID information. I don't answer calls like that; they're usually scams or pranks or some other bovine spit. Later, I listen to the messages, and they're from a young-sounding guy who talks real fast over a very bad connection; I decipher that he's with California Exterminating Service, and on the second message, he tells me to call the answering service again if I want to have him call me back. I don't, and I won't. Just for the record: I don't know whether or not California Exterminating Service could've done a good job with the wasps, and I'm never going to find out. I get it if you can't answer your phone while you're working on-site with customers or while you're out to lunch or whatever. I don't get it when your answering service acts like they'd rather be doing anything else besides answering the phone or when they don't know whether or not you're doing business or out to lunch or whatever. I can't imagine what benefit you get by calling prospective customers from a phone with a blocked caller ID number so they don't know who you are. To each his own, I guess. Terrible - no guarantee for mice problem. Initially had Kevin who put one mesh on a possible exterior entry point. Other than that, workers had no commitment to getting rid of the problem. Usually stayed for five minutes and just dropped off traps, claiming that was all they were there to do. Do yourself a favor, go with another exterminator for mice because this one will just be an expensive way to buy mouse traps. Plain and simple, it is now three months after we initiated services with California Exterminating Service and we're still left with the problem. read more

I would give minus stars if I could. Friends of mine contacted Kevin and told him the problem. They have a single story house in northern California. They have a rat problem and probably rat mites and also bird mites and have been going through a horrendous amount of work to combat them. I have gotten terrible bitten as well as several of their friends who stayed at their house. After explaining everything to Kevin--whom I believe sent someone out to investigate--they were given a price of $500 and a 6 month guarantee to do the work. But when he or someone was to come yesterday to do the work, suddenly Kevin decided to double the price! Talk about holding someone hostage! Back when i first moved here. They provided exterminating service to the house that I lived in. We had a lot of trees and we had these big juicy spiders that liked to bite my little one. They were great then. At my new home, I started having an ant issue which was unusual after living here for nearly 2 years. I called and Kevin answered. He answered with an irritated Hello?!? Didn't realize that businesses can answer with such an irritating tone when customers call. I should have realized that was a bad sign. Told Kevin my problem and he said he would come by in the morning. Told my neighbor to watch for him. Didn't come nor did he call. I called the next day and told him to give me a time frame. I left a sign on my door to see my neighbor and left my cell phone. Didn't even show up or call again. I ended up going home and using Raid. read more

I really liked the service from the get go. they were prompt in answering the phone and were able to come out that week to fit in with my work schedule. I was impressed by Kevin when he immediately knew where the rat was coming to the house and how to fix that. He also looked at the crawl space and fortified that as possible entrance. I also told him I had a gopher problem and he said he could fix, that. However, he looked in the yard and stated that right now it didn't seem to be a problem. The rat returned 2 times after that initial visit. I never saw Kevin again, he came and out and another guy, Gerardo out too, when I was not home, even though I specified when I would be home; they would call with the updates on the fixes. I usually interacted with the guys that came to check the traps and they weren't very knowledgeable and were not aware of the upgrades Kevin or Gerardo did. But after 2 months, they finally prevented the rat from coming in. The cost is definitely on the higher end, especially because I was dealing with one rat. $400. But I was willing to accept that for guaranteed service and good service. They guarantee their work for 6 months. However, I was put off off by the gopher issue. When the rain hit us and the gophers came back, we called their service back and he said he would have to charge us additional for that. Considering we had one rat and he had agreed to take care of the gopher before under the flat fee, I was a little unhappy that I would have to fork over even more money. read more

I cannot believe the service I received from this company. After finding what I thought was a bedbug, I panicked. I called lots of different places, and no one could come on my schedule. Kevin at California Exterminating Service called me back and told me to put the suspected bug in a folded piece of tape, and put it in an envelope on my front door. He called me later that day to tell me he had asked four experts at local extension offices and they had all pretty much agreed that it wasn't a bedbug. But they couldn't agree on what it was. So Kevin told me he was going to send the bug to Sacramento and have state entomologists analyze it. He called me a few days later to tell me that the bug was a book louse and it only ate decaying vegetation like old books. (I must admit I have a lot of those!) The most incredible part of all this is what they charged me. Exactly nothing. Please patronize this phenomenal business. read more

I opened the door to greet Kevin on the first visit and he said "wow, you're a baby." Off to a great start. He then walked my house perimeter and pointed out places that they'd seal. I said that we had rodent evidence in a utility closet inside the house and also in the crawlspace but he said that sealing the entry points from outside would take care of the issue. I called to have them come back several times during the 6 month warranty period and they did come back in a timely fashion, but never went in the crawlspace or inside to check the utility closet. We still had as many rodents as before. The company I eventually hired to fix the issue laughed when I said I had paid almost $500 for someone to seal the entry points. They found many, many additional entry points by actually going inside the crawlspace and attic. read more

I called 5 companies that I found on Yelp regarding rats. When I called California Exterminating Services, I spoke with a receptionist who said she would forward my info to a tech. About an hour later I received a call from Kevin. I explained my situation, what I had done so far to combat the situation, and my frustration with how I was still losing the battle. Kevin asked where I lived and he said he was very familiar with the area. Since I reside in a townhouse that is located in the middle of other units, Kevin gave me some feedback on what I could do, and if it didn't work to call him back in a week. I appreciated Kevin's professionalism, his quick response, and willingness to help. I seriously hope you never need an exterminator, but if you do, look no further. I called California Exterminating on behalf of my parents, who had a rat infestation. Michael came to the house on time and completed all the work in a neat, timely manner. He returned as promised a week later to check traps. A couple of weeks later, I called and spoke to Kevin because there was clearly a dead rat "somewhere". Before I'd called the exterminators, my parents and their caretaker had spread rat poison everywhere and one had died somewhere under the house. Kevin arrived at my parents' house a couple of hours after I called and checked it out for them, handling the situation. He didn't charge at all for the visit, just said it was part of the service.
