Excellent quality of work.
Poor communication with customers and competency of running a business.
This review is a little late because my car was at Shattuck Auto Collision Center during the summer of 2016 (and yes, the entire 3 months). Luckily I kept a record of each of my conversations with Shattuck because this is a long one.
The story started the third weekend of May 2016 when I was out of town for the weekend and left my Subaru parked on a residential street in Temescal. On Monday morning, I noticed that it had been hit (no note) - the front bumper wasn't flush with the side panel, the grill had been smashed, the hood had been pushed downward and wouldn't open, and the front license plate was bent. My insurance company recommended Shattuck Auto, and after doing my own research I decided they sounded like a quality option.
I dropped my car off at the shop on May 27. Unfortunately, after opening the car up, they found internal damage and gave me an estimated completion date of June 21.
On June 18, I called to check on the status and found out my car wouldn't be available until the 24th.
On the 22nd, I called and was promised I'd have my car by July 5.
On July 5, I had heard nothing from Shattuck, so I called them and was told that their metal guy had gone on vacation and the car wouldn't be ready until July 21.
Around this time (either July 12 or 13), my insurance company (Kemper, who were great throughout) become so disillusioned with the length of time the repair was taking that they sent an employee unannounced to Shattuck one morning to literally knock on their door, see what was going on, and light a fire under their asses (well, to my knowledge, that last part isn't literal :)). It was only then that Shattuck told Kemper that they had found a frame rail had been bent, meaning they would have to remove the engine in order to repair it, and estimated that the car was totaled because the repairs would exceed the allowable percentage of the total value of the vehicle. Why would Shattuck have not told either me or Kemper that immediately?!
Kemper did their own estimation and ended up valuing the car quite a bit more than the auto center (meaning it was not considered totaled). My insurance claim agent was completely aghast at everything that Shattuck had put me through at this point, and said it was unprecedented based on her years of experience.
When they started working on the car again, Jim (the manager) took over as my main point of contact from Edgar, and estimated completion by August 15. Jim also offered to pay for my rental car for the duration of the repairs because my insurance only covers it for 30 days. Fortunately for them, I had borrowed friends' cars for the first month, so they ended up only having to reimburse me for the final four weeks, which still cost them almost $500.
When I called on Aug 15, Jim estimated the car would be ready on the 18th or 19th.
A couple days later, he pushed the completion date back a week.
On the 25th, he told me "early next week" (the 29th-31st).
Finally, on September 1, I picked up my car (shinny from a complementary wash & buff) and drove it home!
When I took the car back to them a month later for the standard checkup, they gave me another free wash and buff.
In their defense:
- Because my repair necessitated taking out the engine and other internal parts, my car had to be shuttled between the mechanic (an entirely separate business) and Shattuck. The mechanic had his own delays, which were completely out of the control of Shattuck.
- Shattuck had a technician unexpectedly move to a new job and another take vacation in July, leaving them severely understaffed.
- Shattuck has a finite number of stalls, so when my car would arrive back from the mechanic, it would sit and wait until a stall opened, and only then would the repairs again commence.
Positives:
- The quality of work was great. I had my trusted mechanic fully inspect everything when I took the car in for routine oil/tire rotation/filters/etc and he said it looked good.
- Two free buffs and they'll "help me out whenever I need it in the future"
- Shattuck paid for the portion of my rental car that insurance didn't cover ($500)
- They covered half my out of pocket deductible ($250)
I debated between 2 and 3 stars and eventually decided on 3 because I think Edgar and Jim truly felt bad about my experience by the end. However, it wasn't until a conversation in late July where I got quite angry and accused them of running an incompetent and disorganized business that they actually started being proactive in communicating with me and trying to make it right. Before that, all I heard was "we're sorry, but this has never happened before in 30 years" (which based on most of the other reviews, may be true). In the end, I'd say that you'll be happy with the quality of work on the day that you pick up your car, but be warned you don't know exactly when that day will come. read more
