Had dinner at Calhoun Corners to celebrate my daughter's graduation from Clemson. The food was pretty good, especially for Clemson where there are few choices other than fast food and college bars. The table service was good too. We had an early reservation. The restaurant was half empty when we arrived at 5:30. And despite being half empty, they tried to seat us at the worst table in the restaurant. When I asked to be seated at a different table, the manager was rude telling us the other tables were reserved. I reminded him that we too had a reservation. After about five minutes of standing in the middle of the restaurant, we we're seated at a better table, but that is not a hassle I want to pay for. read more

Was looking forward to eating @ Calhoun Corner but up being seated at the least desirable table I asked the hostess for a booth due to back issues. She was curt & ill and told me the booths were reserved for other guest. I had made a reservation and thought I was a guest. A booth remained opened the entire time my son and I ate dinner. The hostess then handed us menus which were filthy. The menu need to be reprinted, daily. It was disgusting to look at crusted food and stains while trying to read a menu. The escargot was too salty, crab stuffed mushrooms were good. My son did not enjoy the Beef Wellington as most of the dish was onion. I tried it and was not impressed. The Filet Bardin with the goat cheese was over drenched in goat cheese. It was overwhelming and I LOVE goat cheese. Delicious mashed potatoes. Neither my son & I finished our meal. Server was friendly and we liked the ambiance of the restaurant. However the front of the house must greet customers kindly, with clean menus. And if charging fine dining prices the experience and food should reflect the pricing. Will not be coming back nor recommend. read more

Lovely place to eat while visiting our daughter who attends Clemson. Locally owned. Steaks had great flavor and recommend the risotto. Extensive menu. Loved the restored home from 1893. Hadn't eaten there is years but so glad we did. Had heard the Beef Wellington is really good but hadn't tried it before. All salad dressings are made in house. read more

We have been to this restaurant on several occasions, always with a positive experience - until this evening. Ten minutes before anyone came by, extremely slow before we got our drinks (15 minutes). Appetizers came out in a reasonable amount of time and were "okay ". Placed our dinner orders and then it was an hour later when half came out - cold. Ten minutes later the other half come out hot. Waitress offered that the first half had been sitting there "quite a while". Well, not the waitresses fault so we asked for a manager to express our displeasure over cold food and sub par experience. Now, there are only 4 tables still left in the restaurant and we were told the manager was busy and would eventually be by. Hard to believe it took about 10 more minutes for him to come by and explain that the early plates were correctly put "under a heat lamp" while the others waited. So, apparently we were wrong about our cold, late delivery food which was not the message we were hoping to hear. At the end of the day, he reluctantly took off the cold entrees from the bill. I know this is a family restaurant and want to give them some slack in these times, but they chose to treat our group like the family you can give a hard time to instead of as a valued repeat customer. Waitress compensated as she should be. There are always bad evenings in any business. It is how you respond that makes the difference. Tonight Calhoun Corners failed in a significant way. By far my favorite restaurant in Clemson! I've never had a bad meal and have been here several, several times. My husband finds it a bit dark inside however that has never bothered me. If the snickers pie is on the menu then order it!!! read more

First time visit here this evening with girlfriends celebrating Christmas. Have to say I was very disappointed. I got the fried shrimp and it was very tough and wasn't fit to eat. I ate one and thought ugh so I decided to try another one and it was just as bad. Will probably not return. read more

We have been to Calhoun Corners many times for dinner. It's a bit pricey and the food is inconsistent. Called earlier in the day to make a reservation for 5 PM. The grumpy owner answered the phone and seemed irritated that I was calling for a reservation. I told him we were celebrating my husband's birthday and I wanted to make it special. We decided to bring a special bottle of wine to celebrate. Upon arrival we were greeted by a host at the front desk who mentioned there was a $15 corkage fee and went to seat us. After waiting 10 minutes of being seated a waiter stopped by, again mentioning the corkage fee. He did uncork the bottle and pour our first glass of wine. We toasted each other as we waited for dinner to arrive. Once dinner arrived the waiter disappeared for long periods of time. When the check arrived we asked the waiter to remove the corkage fee. He stated he could not so we asked to speak to the owner. The owner abruptly came to our table and stated that he would not remove the fee. He was extremely rude and could have had a better delivery. I explained to him we were celebrating my husband's birthday and wanted to make it special and nothing about this had been special. I asked him to remove the corkage fee as a courtesy. He stated that people come in for birthdays all the time and there's nothing special about it. I have never met a business owner that was RUDE like this man. We will not be going back. read more

Adorable restaurant tucked behind a train overpass just off Old Greenville Hwy. We had a reservations for 12 at 5:30pm on Thursday 12/20. It was graduation day at Clemson so the restaurant was well-occupied. We were brought upstairs to a long table. The restaurant is an old house with a comfortable yet classy vibe. I loved the exposed brick on one of the walls. They also had a huge Christmas tree that filled the vaulted ceiling and was visible from the upstairs dining room. Our drinks orders were taken promptly.. beer and wine for the table, and water was brought quickly. We skipped appetizers and ordered entrees, learning from our mistake the night before. The menu was extensive - choices ranging from jambalaya, lobster tails, filet mignon, and vegetable pasta. I ordered the duck breast which was seared then roasted to perfection. We enjoyed our meal without feeling rushed and our waitress was a real trooper with our group which got progressively rowdier as she kept refilling our wine & beer glasses. After a slight mishap which included beer spilled down my sleeve, she was super apologetic and comped the replacement. After-dinner drinks and dessert were enjoyed by all. I had a Toasted Almond coffee which was tasty! We finished our dessert and drinks and were still able to sit comfortably at the table and chat. Great experience at Calhoun Corners and would love to return if I come to Clemson again! read more

Seemed like a very nice spot for a cozy dinner, although we showed up unannounced with a chatty professional group and found a place quite easily, too. They seemed very accommodating and helpful, and the food was excellent. I went with one of a number of filet options, and they did seem to have a definite thing for steak, but it looked like my dinner companions did okay with their seafood choices, too. The key lime pie for dessert? So worth it. Definitely worth a stop sometime. read more

Ordered the Scallops and Spinach salad . Spinach, tomatoes and 3 slices of a hard boiled egg. Before ordering I inquired how many scallops would come with the salad. The waiter said "five." When the salad arrived, I looked for the scallops and at first glance I thought they were croutons. How disappointing to pay $14.95 for this salad, which by the way was my dinner. My friends who had a side salad with dinner had a heartier salad than mine. The bread deserves 5 stars!!! Delicious!!! Will not return!!! Not my thing to write long reviews but this one will be different, for good reason. Clemson is our final stop after a week long fun road trip through the Southeast. We've had some wonderful meals. And very few underwhelming ones. This one was one. Being our last night before heading back to Chicago we wanted to enjoy what was described as a great restaurant with a long Clemson history. So after looking at the very broad menu offerings we decided on Calhoun Corners. We were promptly greeted and taken to our table and our server followed very soon to take our drink order and describe the menu. We ordered a Dirty Martini and a house special cocktail. I also ordered an appetizer and asked that it be delivered with our drinks while we decided on our dinner choices .... the drinks came pretty quickly and were well made - but no appetizer. Up to the drinks things were ok but as you'll see it ends there. We proceeded to enjoy our drinks and our waiter came back to take our dinner order. "Appetizer will be here soon", nope it wasn't. Finally after 3/4 of our drinks were gone (drinking slowly) the app shows up AND our She Crab soup pre at the same time. Not what we expected, slow serve then rush with courses over running each other. I asked the waiter to MAKE SURE our meal was not prepared too soon, so we could take time with the app and soup. Of course drinks were gone and then needed to add wine order. For dinner on recommendation from the waiter I ordered the Tuna and my wife order trout stuffed with shrimp ... and I asked that the tuna be rare. When dinner came it was obvious that the meal had been sitting under lights or in warming oven. The tuna was medium not rare and the accompanying sauce was so tart and salty it was not good. My wife's trout came split with shrimp on it and covered in sauce. The shrimp were tough and the trout was over cooked and the sauce was too much. In the end our drinks were good and the wine selections were good. Otherwise like many other reviews I see here, history seems to have caught up with this restaurant. It should be noted that the definition of FINE DINING has changed. Think fresh, creative, well prepared with care for detail. Oh and awesome flavor. None of this meets what we experienced tonight. read more

As fairly new residents of upstate South Carolina, our party of six was looking to dining at Calhoun Corners. We dined there last night and were VERY disappointed. The salmon was supposed to be served with risotto but was instead served with a bland white rice. The salmon had an excessive mustard coating which overpowered the dish. One of our party ordered pork tenderloin but the server wrote the order as beef tenderloin. The server was very inattentive. We ordered additional drinks but they were not delivered in a timely manner. The server never returned to refill water glasses and our entree plates were never removed from the table. The level of service was so poor we decided against ordering dessert. read more

Besides that, it was a great experience working with the team at Calhoun Corners. The atmosphere was charming, the food was delicious and the service was excellent. This is a review for those who choose to eat healthy and end up at this restaurant (and maybe everyone else too). I come to Clemson for a meeting 2-4 times a year. I've eaten here maybe 15-20 times because, unfortunately as it turns out, this is where the group goes each time for dinner together. Each and every time I order, saying, "I'm vegan. I know this isn't a vegan-type restaurant, but could we simply do some sautéed vegetables, very low oil, in a balsamic reduction?" That is an incredibly simple meal to cook; I'm trying to be low maintenance and reasonable; I try to limit oil for health reasons. Yet every single time I get the veggies with balsamic reduction covered in heavy oil. They simply can't do a meal that isn't smothered in oil (let alone one that is sautéed in vegetable broth / no oil). It's not friggin' rocket science, especially for what is supposed to be an upscale restaurant. I've had conversations numerous times with all levels of staff to no avail. Tonight I said yet again, "Couldn't you guys get just one, simple, healthy vegan dish in your pocket for times when people like me show up?" For years, hope sprung eternal for a different outcome each visit, but I'm talking to a rock. So tonight, after yet again being oiled and disappointed, I decided I will no longer be dining with the group at this restaurant. If this is how they respond to a long-time customer's repeated request, maybe your steak or seafood order will be OK, but maybe they will thumb their nose at you too. read more

I usually order the Sherry Cream Shrimp & Lobster Bake on Puff Pastry and I have to say it is phenomenal. My absolute favorite dish. We met friends for our first visit to Calhoun Corners. The restaurant had a great ambience & the building had an interesting history. We arrived early and took a seat at the bar and Davis, the bar tender, gave us the history of the building and the restaurant as he prepared our cosmopolitan and blue moon. Our friends joined us and even though our table was ready we were having such a good time at the bar, the staff allowed us to take our time which was very nice. Jeb, our waiter, took great care of us at our table and we started with the white cheese pizza and the almond Bree for our appetizers and they were both were both a very big hit. Our entrées consisted of the beef Wellington, the scallops and the prime rib special with almond encrusted shrimp. Our friends thought the beef Wellington and the scallops were very good. My wife and I had the prime rib and shrimp and the shrimp were delicious but the prime rib was just was OK. We did not have any dessert because we were all too full. Overall, we enjoyed our evening immensely and I look forward to a return visit. read more

Calhoun Corners is a great restaurant! I've been here only two times, but both times I've been blown away by the food. The first time was so long ago I can barely remember, but the second time more more recently. I went to dinner with my boyfriend on a Wednesday night, probably a little after the dinner rush ended. We waited at the front for a while to be seated, and also waited a while for our server after we were seated, but after that, the service was impeccable. The server apologized profusely for the (admittedly long) wait and was extremely attentive the rest of the night. We had stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer which were good, but the entrees were amazing. I had a salmon dish that tasted so fresh, I would've sworn I was on the coast. My boyfriend had a perfectly steak which was covered in a sauce so rich and delicious I could've eaten it by the spoonful. Pretty much everything you can get on the menu is on the pricey side (for Clemson, at least) but you don't go in expecting an inexpensive meal, and the quality is on par with the price. I have been here several times before but this was by far the worst as far as service. The hostess was very accommodating she was pleasant and sweet. Our server was just "OK". He brought out dirty wine glasses (which we waited so long for the replacement that we got up and got it ourselves from the bar). We ask for bread during our appetizers to go with our "She Crab Soup" that didn't come out til the dinner course. Lastly when I excused myself to the ladies room there was no toilet tissue in the stall. HOW EMBARRASSING! There were paper towels and mop strings all over the floor. I spoke with the manager about it, and he half heartedly apologized saying, "the bathrooms should been checked 3 times a shift". I assured him they had not. For the ambiance and price of this place I guess I hold them to a different standard than that of Applebee's. The entrees were good but the recommended duck breast was over cooked, I prefer medium rare. The risotto was also over cooked. The brownie dessert was disappointing the pecan pie was better. Just a couple of nicer restaurants in Clemson, rest are mainly targeted towards students. Calhoun Corners used to be excellent, not sure what happened but its lousy now. Go back periodically in hopes it's better but this time it was worse than ever. They really need a talented chef because whoever is preparing meals now is not one. Ordered stuffed chicken with pasta.....floating on a plate of greasy butter. Someone took the lid off the spice jar with the pasta....so much oregano that it was not edible. This place never has disappointed us. It's more of an upscale place to come set in an old huge historical-looking manor house. Huge trees surround it with plenty of parking. The staff has always been very attentive, professional and the food is always amazing. I hope that anyone who had a bad experience would let the managers know immediately. I used to run a large business and would have been mortified if I read some of these reviews without having a chance to make it right. I'll bet the owners would have wanted to know which server was so bad. This restaurant has been around for a while and has always been recommended to everyone in town. read more

We use to enjoy this restaurant more than any other in town. We invited a couple to dine with us for a birthday. We were not told that a salad is not included with your entree anymore. I have lived here for 40 years. We have never been disappointed until tonight. The she crab soup had very little crab in it and was not warm. The rib eye was very tough!! The Caesar salads were mushy(appeared to have been made for a while and floating in dressing). The ahi tuna was good. The bread was cold. We had to ask for refills on tea. It had no ice in it. I ask for a glass of just ice three times before getting it. Waiter told us that the ice in the tea melted very fast. Don't order the lobster bake!! It had about seven small pieces of lobster in cream sauce on top of puff pastry with 4 slices of carrots. It also was cold. Cream sauce was almost jelled. That entree was $28.95 with no sides!!!! Really?!?! Embarrassed with people from Greenville. Will not be back or recommend it as I had done in the past!!!! read more
