The food is well prepared. The menu is large. The building space is very good. I have eaten here a number of times. But nothing stands out to me. Still, Clemson has so few choices for well prepared meals that I can recommend it to try. read more

First off I want to say we love the space and ambiance. The menu has a nice variety as does the beer and wine sections. This past Friday was our third visit in the last five months, each time I've felt the service and food quality has declined to the point we probably won't go back anytime soon. We had a Scallops Provencal - Seared scallops crusted in Herbes de Provence, drizzled with parsley lemon butter and served with grilled asparagus and steamed rice pilaf and Baked Seafood Trio Shrimp, scallops, and crabmeat baked over rice in a Parmesan and roasted red pepper Chardonnay butter topped with broiled Havarti. Absolutely amazing and well worth the price tag. My fiance and I went on dinner date at Calhoun Corners today and we both loved it. They give you plenty. They give you a freshly baked amazingly buttery bread to start off with then your appetizer comes fresh and hot while you wait for your main meal to finish cooking. The staff were all friendly and we loved our waiter. He still did his job amazingly even with a big college test weighing on his mind. We gave him a generous tip in hopes of easing his worry. We will definitely be going back when we can. You should give them a try too. read more

Not very impressed. Decent food, but expect to wait an excessively long time for it. 47 minutes from sit down to being served for a party of 3 ordering standard fare off the menu. Waited another 15 minutes for a second glass of wine to be brought to the table. 13 minutes between the time we asked for a check and they ran our card. I ordered the salmon special; fish was fine, but there was a lot of oil on the plate... killed the dish with all the oil. Ick. The pre-dinner bread was dripping with butter. Double ick. Other ordered dishes were ok. No management observed walking around; they sat at front desk the whole time we were there. The restaurant did not look excessively busy and there was several wait staff working the room; we noticed the other diners were being served slowly too. I think more active management presence would hopefully notice and address these issues before they became problems for customers. read more

Billed in the better dining experiences around the area, the ambiance imparted by their vintage 1893 brick building is a high point. The history in these old bricks and wood floors makes for an elevated evening of dining. The place is simply handsome. Tastefully decorated. Quiet and orderly. Nice seating. White cloth everywhere. Nothing left wanting in the appearance of the place. So far, so good. They use the phrase "fine dining" and charge accordingly. When you do that you have to impress. Unfortunately, first experiences are hard to erase and this first experience saw execution fall short of expectation. Our waitress was extremely polite and well mannered so it's hard to find fault with her. We ordered two glasses of wine, a mojito and a beer. The beer arrived in a bottle with no glass. That just doesn't feel right. It's not right. I get a frosty glass anywhere I eat that's at least indoors. This was a foreshadowing of things to come... One of us ordered crab cakes after being assured that the cakes were mostly large chunks of crab meat and that the sauce would be on the side. They arrived covered in sauce and were returned as our waitress apologized profusely for the error. The replacement cakes eventually materialized with sauce on the side. They were not lump crab meat but rather some sort of rather stringy crab like product... no doubt real, similar to something you can find in the frozen food section, not anything near the meal promised and certainly not anything one would expect to find inside this fine old building... So one of four meals was a total fail. (The crab cakes were removed from the bill... at least there was some justice served in the place of food) Two of us had the shrimp and grits which we were assured was a staple at the establishment. this dish did not disappoint. It was flavorful with just a hint of bite from the andouille sausage. Rich but not overdone. Filling but not too so... All considered, it was about as good as shrimp and grits get. ...and I have to confess that I have eaten a shameful quantity of shrimp and grits in my tome on this planet. Score the place ahead 2 to 1 thus far. Not good but better than even. Lastly, my wife ordered duck. She ranks it as "I didn't feel that it was that good." The presentation wasn't that great, the duck was just not that appetizing. All this is great news for our dachshund who will be tasting the duck tomorrow... I will let you know if he doesn't like it. (if that proved to be the case I may have to cut the ranking a bit more.) I'm going to score the place 50/50 thus far in the review. So here we are with one of us underwhelmed and one still undernourished at the end of the meal. As we urged her to order something to eat, our still smiling and charming waitress asked if anyone would like a dessert. Ah! Some calories and enjoyment for our crab cake starved companion!... she took advantage of the opportunity to go home without an empty stomach and ordered the Key Lime pie. She took a bite and offered one to my wife who had to ask what it was. I am going to leave that as a serious indictment of the pie and draw into question the entire desert menu without any other information... Guilt by association. Seriously, Key Lime is so distinctive; to serve a version that is unrecognizable has to be some sort of gastronomical barbarism... Yay! Yay! Meh. and Eek! What a mixed review. You pick what you think it should get. I'm gong to have to come down a bit harshly on them. 2 stars - "Meh. I've experienced better" certainly for the price and fanfare, I have to say I am underwhelmed. I would be willing to overlook any one of these faults, maybe even two and give them 4 stars... I just can't support more than two with the poor showing. My ultimate test... will I return? Not unless I get a coupon in the mail. read more

Really good food at a really cool place. It looks like this used to be a residential home that's been converted. It's an old, southern plantation style house that's beautifully decorated with ornate finishes and interesting artwork. The food was absolutely delicious, it might be the best scallop dish I've ever gotten at a restaurant. They were cooked perfectly and the medley of garlic, cream, and cheese is sublime. read more

Sorry to say, big disappointment. *ATMOSPHERE: GREAT, not too loud, great brick walls really liked it. *Service: Stared great, ended lackluster. *Drinks: water and sweet tea, great tea., *Appetizer: Crabcake,. It was ok, little mushy not hot, *Bread: Great hot loaf with butter, best part of the meal. Could use a little garlic. *Salads: Ceaser and Spinach, small but meh, nothing special * Entree 1: Prime Rib/baked potato. Arrived before we finished our salad grrr. The prime rib was cold, potato great. Sent prime rib back, same plate returned to table having been put in the oven my medium rare prime now medium well, tough had decent seasoning but aus jues cold, no horseradish. Really sad presentation. *Entree 2: Wife had ribeye with shrimp, found out later she didn't want to complain but it was tough, undercooked, shrimp and pasta ok. Really sad that she had to endure this because my prime rib was bad. *Dessert: had the 3 layer cheesecake, was ok, enjoyed it. Ordered coffee, had to send it back coffee was old and cold. I feel bad really wanted to find our go to place, but no. The kicker was $140 that included the $20 tip and stop at the bathroom on the way out. OMG the seat in the mens room commode was stained, loose looked 20 years old. Bathroom was dirty all the way through. I can't make this stuff up folks. Bad. For a restaurant claiming to be upscale and formal BUY A NEW TOILET SEAT, CLEAN THE BATHROOM. Wife said the ladies room was better. read more

I was in Clemson for a conference, and for the big dinner that signified the near end of the conference our group went to Calhoun's Corner Restaurant for a really nice meal. We arrived shortly before dusk, so we were able to see our way, and we were presented with the hundred year old architecture of a building that had once served well with the railroad line located closeby. The old bricks and wood building presented a beautiful background for white tablecloth service and fine dining. Our group was soon seated upstairs, where we could spread out a bit and not interfere with smaller groups and couples that were seated down on the ground floor, which suited us just fine. We were handled by three wait staff, who took our drink orders quickly and efficiently. Soon we ordered some appetizers for various tables. At our table we had an order of the cheese platter along with a couple of the cajun shrimp skewers... we all loved the shrimp skewers, and comined the sweet buttered bread that they bring to every table with the cheese platter to create some interesting appetizers. For my main dish, I ordered the rib eye steak. Now, it is at this point that I have to give credit to the wait staff on being really good at upselling other items on the menu, because it was at this point where she asked me "and what would you like for your second course?" Not "do you want any sides with that" or anything else, but the mere suggestion of a second course. It was beautifully done, and I took her up on that option by ordering one. However, she did get tripped up when I asked her where the lamb actually came from that was on the menu. This sounds innocuous, but it has two purposes... first is to see just how knowledgable the wait staff is (she didn't know, but offered to go to the kitchen and ask, which is also acceptable) and the second is because I actually do want to know... the region that lamb comes from (typically US, New Zealand, or Australia for the US) will tell you just how gamey the lamb will tend to be... there are different flavor profiles for each. Anyway, enough of the food lessons. The food was enjoyable, and the atmosphere we ate in was fabulous. We all enjoyed our night out, and Calhoun's Corner Restaurant was a big part in making that happen. I came to Clemson for my daughters orientation. We wanted to eat at a nice restaurant. There were only two tables beside ourselves eating there. The seafood was tough, the food was not good at best. We observed the waiter at the other table handing the wine bottle to the guest to open it ( he was not able to do it). We got sick that night and let's just say the orientation was not enjoyable!!! Server needs more training, drinks came out very slowly and to be honest not made very well. Bread was ok but when asking for butter the waiter said it was already on the bread. Unfortunately it was MARGARINE melted over the top of it!... Who serves margarine in a nice restaurant? (and I use the term NICE loosely) They even serve it for baked potatoes!! Chinsy to say the least!! Makes you wonder what other short cuts they are using in the kitchen. Well, let me tell you one other one. I made it a point to ask the waiter if they make the hollandaise sauce from scratch (egg yolks, clarified butter, lemon juice, ect...) and he enthusiastically said absolutely. Well what came out of the kitchen was not even close.... They served mayonnaise with lemon juice mixed in it.... yuck!! In my opinion this business is trying to fake it to make it. While in town for work, was looking for a good meal while staying in Clemson and found myself here on a Wednesday night. The place looked very nice from the outside and was fairly dark, cozy, and comfortable inside. I sat at the bar and was greeted by a friendly female bartender who made a great Dirty Martini. There was no one else at the bar but there were many tables with large groups of people (aged 50 and over) sitting around. I had the Escargot for an appetizer and although a bit too salty for me, it had good flavor. I liked the tiny pieces of prosciutto in it. I ordered the Filet Imperial- medium rare for my entree. This steak had jumbo lump crabmeat on top with a berenaise sauce. The steak was cooked to perfection but I've had better (fresher) jumbo lump crabmeat and I would have liked more berenaise sauce (really couldn't find it on my steak). I opted out of dessert so can't comment on that... Appetizer, Entree, and one drink came to about $45 without tip. Not bad. I was just glad to find pretty good food in a nice, fairly upscale atmosphere as it seems Clemson is pretty much full of fast food, college-type joints. I'll most likely go back to Calhoun Corners the next time I'm in Clemson to try something else on the menu. read more

Great experience! This is a classic type of restaurant that has a very good atmosphere, excellent service (Alyse was very attentive and helpful yet not obtrusive) and the food was scrumptious! This was our first time and we are used to upscale dining literally worldwide and Calhoun Corners definitely falls in the upper 10%. A decent wine list with reasonable prices, a large menu, and delicious quality food made for a great dining experience. Some of the negative reviews are baffling as our experience was the total opposite giving us pause about the plausibility of some of the reviewers. We dined on the 3 special dishes for the evening starting with a watermelon salad that was not only tasty but light so as to not overeat prior to the main courses. Those were the evenings broiled salmon dusted with crushed pecans and a succotash that was much better than most. And a pan seared filet with madeira sauce and crispy fried potatoes and shallots. Again, yum! Freshly baked bread (a real rarity these days) and a nice Chianti Riserva finished off a very tasty dinner with no room for dessert (maybe next time). We moved to the area a few months ago. Have been dying to try this place for awhile. Decided to finally take my entire family tonight for my birthday. ABSOLUTE DISASTER!! Made reservations for 7pm. We did get seated at 7pm. Solid start. It then took almost 10mins to be greeted by a waitress for drink orders. Another 15mins waiting for the drinks (1x water/ 4x sweet tea). We then ordered appetizers (naan pizza: delicious!/ 1/4lb shrimp/ 2 cups of she-crab soup). It took nearly 15mins to receive the appetizers!! 2 tables had been sat and began eating main courses by the time we had we received our first apps! The she-crab soup was overwhelmingly sherry infused. I sent it back immediately. It should be more milk/ crème based.... Not so much sherry based. The server took it back with no issues citing it wouldn't be a problem. We then ordered dinner. The couple behind us who arrived after us, ordered an appetizer, and was now having their food boxed up by their server were preparing to leave when we finally received our food. At this time, it had been nearly 50mins at the table with drinks and apps. Myself, my wife, and our 3 boys. (16,13,3) That is ridiculous!!! The entrees were delicious when they finally got to us! 1000% tasty and fantastic, but absolutely not worth the terrible service and overall disappointment I felt for Calhoun Corners! When I received the bill, I was charged for the 2 cups of she-crab soup that had barely been touched! A $200 bill for my wife and 3 sons. A lackluster, inattentive server and just a bad experience overall. Our server never offered to box our leftovers like her peer servers. We were never acknowledged by the manager even though I asked to speak to him/ her on numerous occasions throughout my experience. This was my birthday dinner! I left in a bad mood. That's not how it should've been. Overall, I want to give the establishment another opportunity, but I want to feel like a valued customer next time. Two of our guests ordered pita bread "pizza" and they were served hard, burnt and overdone. Our daughter's steak arrived well done instead of medium rare. We're from out of state and was disappointed with the meals. Our server was very sweet but management should address the kitchen prep/chefs lack of attention for preparing the food properly. The Grecian had no different flavor than the regular filet.. other than the blue cheese topping.. the potatoes and veggies on all latex were cold as well. The best thing about this restaurant is the bread and honestly it's what might let us return. Went with a group of 6. I do believe their bartender needs some training as none of us liked our beverages. All of the steak came cold and was severely under seasoned. I very seldom complain. I don't go out to eat much. I'm a doctoral student and spend a lot of time engaged in that endeavor -and My mom is a gourmet and excellent chef. I live in Clemson but don't go to C. C. often. I have general rule when I eat out. 1 bad thing I just suck it up and go on- 2 mis-steps I might say something to server- 3? Gonna report to Yelp or the mgt. food tonight was marginal. I understand living in a college town that moving product and finding help when students are gone can be challenging, but my salad consisted mostly of the inedible stem from the head.- how does that happen? Don't your just throw that part away? When my entree arrived all of the half dozen or so shrimps were deveined and de-tailed - except for one. Unlucky me- I didn't notice and I bit down on the tail on shrimp and the spike at the end of the tail nailed me in the roof of my mouth. Ouch! I mentioned something about my salad and the shrimp to the server but she seemed terribly uninterested. When the desserts arrived with no forks or way to eat them I lamented that at each step along the way: salad- entree-dessert there was a mishap. It just wasn't that enjoyable tonight and I though to myself if I'm going to drop $223 bucks for 4 people for this: I might as well stay home. I can do better myself. read more

We go to Calhoun's when we come in town because it's always been a good consistent place to eat. Last couple times it has been off. Thinking it would get better we tried again. Disappointment is an understatement. First our appetizer - four stuffed mushrooms the size of a quarter and they had no flavor. We order a regular salad - again such poor presentation - lettuce, a tomato - yes once slice of a tomato -that looked to be very old ; and one slice of a cucumber. We ordered a bottle of wine - seriously if you are charging these prices who would send out a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc warm - I told them it was warm and they brought back a wine chiller with ice to get it cold which it didn't even get close to cold and our meal came. The entree was good but not great. Plates were not cleared after we finished - they were left until after we paid and got up. We had a server that had been there two weeks and I understand she was new but they should have put someone with her. I'm in this business and hate to complain but for a $150 tab I expect a little more. My final time going here was tonight. I should have given a one star review but was nice in the two star. read more

Very cozy restaurant with lots of charm. Food was mostly good though a bit overcooked. Service however was lacking.

Poor service. The waitress grabbed my glass to refill water, wrapping her gloved hand around the rim of the glass! Seriously! Pick it up by holding the lower half of the glass if you must touch my glass at all. I have no way of knowing if that glove had contacted the glasses of other patrons in similar fashion.
