It may not have a real mascot, or overall theme, but it's down home charm makes up for it. The staff at Caleb's are always warm and inviting, exactly what I expect from a brunch only spot, you want the friendliness from the waitress that gives you the comfort of a Sunday morning after church out to brunch with the family, and that is spot on to the vibe of Caleb's. The breakfast plates are priced affordably and everything I have tasted time and time again has been seasoned and cooked really well. Sometimes, at brunch only establishments I can find the food a tad bit overly salty but, I have never had that happen at Caleb's even though the dishes are very rich and large and in charge. Once I found out about Caleb's I think I went back two more times within that month and recommended it to family and friends. The eggs benedicts have to take my top draft pick. If you are a fan of yolky hollandaise in a thick creamy blanket mixing with a perfectly poached egg, the yolk spilling out, then choosing one of the two benedicts is a must! They are also nicely priced at under $10?! Like come on...you cannot beat that value especially for a classic benedict like the one I had the last time. The thick fresh tomatoes, the nice bed of spinach protecting the toasted English muffin from any sort of sogginess, as well as the salty Canadian bacon all layered and stacked to create a bountiful benedict. The other benedict Caleb's offers is one that includes corn beef hash and is just as savory and delicious, and yes I have ordered that one as well, just call me a traditionalist because I prefer the classic one here. Another notable mention, one that's price really makes it part of the starting lineup at Caleb's, is the biscuit breakfast sandwiches. The one that I prefer is the one with spicy chorizo. These bad boys are made on a homemade square lightly colored, soft, chewy cloud of a biscuit that is massive! The biscuit is halved and the sandwich essentials are stuffed inside, it truly is the perfect vessel for a breakfast sandwich. And here's the kicker... Caleb's sells these for $6.99 to $7.99, what a deal. Everything on the menu is affordable, the price point is pretty much all under thirteen dollars for full plates of food that will definitely fill you up without emptying out your wallet. If you are looking for a new go-to local brunch restaurant to try out in the South Kansas City/ Grandview area then look no further than Caleb's. They offer a wide range of price conscious breakfast and lunch options that do not skimp out on the portion sizes or on the flavor. The waiter ("Joe") is interesting. I'm about to eat so I'll wait to finish this review. So, today was our first day eating here and though most of the food tasted great, the service was horrible. A warm body was our server and I so wish that more people would take more stock in giving excellent service. The hostess also lacked great service. Maybe they are both very shy, and I get it if they are but it's tough to stick to a place where you won't be treated like their job and tip depends how well they treat customers. So, I'll start by saying this review is really a 3.5 - Caleb's is clean and friendly with plenty of variety on their menu to make even the pickiest of eaters happy. Breakfast is sort of my jam, so I was excited to see a new place (new to me anyway) while driving over to visit my mother in South KC before the Coronavirus put a kibosh on my regular, weekend, dining out breakfast routine (and pretty much everything else for the foreseeable future). I had a hard time making a choice with so many great options on the menu. As proof, I ordered the Cowboy Skillet with my eggs basted instead of scrambled, and just out of pure indecisiveness, I also added a side biscuits and gravy. Let's not judge people - I always have to try the b&g. My 80+ mother selected the Kitchen Sink omelette and spent the next few minutes talking about how the price seemed a little high. Now, to be fair, I think the prices are pretty on par with most breakfast joints in town. It should also be noted that the last time my mom actually PAID for breakfast was probably 1995. So, there's that. As my mom was going through her weekly rundown of who she saw at church, the grocery store and Sam's Club, our food arrived to save the day. Mom's omelette looked great, and despite a few more comments about how much it was, she seemed to enjoy it. My skillet was tasty with my eggs perched on top of shredded hash browns, bacon, red peppers and cheesy goodness. It was a tad on the greasy side, but still good overall. The biscuits and gravy made a decent showing as well with fluffy biscuits baked to perfection. The gravy had plenty of sausage and a savory taste, but it was a little too thick and pasty for my liking. I felt it needed a little more milk. You know how when you go to DQ and they always turn the Blizzard upside down when they hand it to you to prove how thick it is? Yeah, I imagined my waitress being able to do that with my bowl of gravy. But, don't be fooled, I still ate every bite. Like I said, all in, Caleb's is good. This first visit just didn't have me doing the white man overbite dance at my table. However, I saw French toast on the menu, so Caleb will be on my dance card for at least one more jam. read more

When we walked in one of the waiters was arguing with hostess about not sitting people in his section, saying "how the f am I supposed to make any money". This was definitely not a great first impression. We were seated in the same waiters section and he did a good job serving us. My husband and I both got scramblers, which were ok but too dry for my liking - to each their own. My husband's English muffin looked perfect, though mine was pretty dark and had black edges - had to eat around it. The cokes were A+. South KC is starting to lay claim to some solid restaurants and for that I am thrilled. Caleb's is only a few minutes from where we live and I LOVE brunch. Let me start off by saying that the food is good, tasty even. No complaints when it comes to the food. It was the service that was ... well ... weird. As soon as our server came over, he immediately told us not to ask him questions about the food because everything should be answered on the menu. When he came back to take our order, he proved that he definitely mean that statement: My mother-in-law asked if he could recommend / narrow down the omelette selections for her. His response: "No, no no, I don't give recommendations, ever. I don't know what you like. I don't know your preferences. I don't know what you've had to eat today. I don't do recommendations." Um, okay? I really wanted fruit, but I'm allergic to a few. I asked him what was in the fruit bowl. A blank stare and "A fruit medley" was the response. Are there bananas? "No." Are there kiwis? "No" End of discussion. He moved on to taking the next person's order. It ended up coming with pineapple, grapes, honeydew, and cantaloupe which was fine. But, come on. "Fruit Medley" is different everywhere! Chic-Fil-A serves theirs with strawberries, apples, mandarin oranges, and blueberries. Little things were forgotten throughout the course of the meal: creamer for the coffee, straws for our water, the toast that came with my meal, and any sort of acknowledgment whenever we would say "thank you" for bringing us what we needed. We'll probably come back because of the convenient location, but hopefully get someone who is a bit more seasoned as a server. read more

Tried out Caleb's for a late breakfast/early lunch today. It was not busy at all (Tuesday around 11:15) and we were seated promptly. Wow! What a great place! We stopped on for late breakfast/early lunch. Mom had crepes and I had the Triple Crown sandwich. Everything was simply delicious! We loved the cozy restaurant. I went there for the second time today. I was underwhelmed by the food. Nice, clean environment, but I really dislike when restaurants attempt to rush you out by offering boxes and attempting to bus the table when I'm still eating. I am a slow eater and usually eat out to not only get nutrition, but to visit with family or friends. I realize they are a busy establishment , but they still had empty tables and booths when we left. The food. Blueberry pancake had about 6 blueberries and part of one side was missing. Coffee was good, I was surprised that the coffee in the carafe was cold when I poured a second cup. The bathroom was nice and clean. Stopped in on a Sunday morning to get some take out breakfast. Still not ready to eat in person in a restaurant without a mask on, but it's clear that Calebs has taken the necessary steps to keep their staff and customers safe. We did order once we arrived, food came out relatively quickly and we were able to go to the car and eat. The food was given just as ordered and overall good. The bread was definitely high quality which makes for great toast. The potatoes were rather salty, almost to the point of too salty so didn't eat more than a few bites. I visited this establishment this morning . Waited almost 10 minutes before I even got a cup of coffee . Observed other guests coming in and were quickly greeted and waited on . After I place my order and received my food , it was cold and undercooked . The manager eventually did come over . Made an excuse about their food always comes out hot.
