I moved to Kansas City 38 years ago and the first breakfast place I was introduced to was First Watch. I loved it! Comfortable environment, friendly helpful servers and a diverse menu offering their own spins on traditional breakfast dishes. It's still my #1 breakfast goto. Went to the Metcalf location today, not the closest to my home but a long time favorite. I frequently order off of the seasonal special menu and I'm never disappointed. Today was no different. William was our server and he was excellent! The Honey Chipotle Chicken Hash was a really surprising melange of flavors. The coffee was (as always) hot and flavorful. Highly recommended. read more

We went to this restaurant for Sunday brunch and joined the waitlist ahead of time, knowing there would be about a 30-minute wait. Once we arrived, the host was very friendly, and we were pleasantly surprised to be seated within five minutes. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there. After being seated, we watched several servers walk past our table, but no one stopped to greet us or take our order. We waited 15 minutes before a server briefly came by and said she'd be "right with us" -- but then disappeared again. It was another 10 minutes before she returned. In that time, we saw at least two tables seated after us get their drink orders taken and receive attention from staff. By the time our server came back, we were ready to leave and take our business elsewhere. It was disappointing to have such a promising start turn into such a frustrating experience. read more

My husband and I went to this first watch for the first time for brunch. He ordered an Italian omelette that came with a side of potatoes and he ordered an English muffin. I ordered their two egg, choice of meat and it comes with potatoes and toast, and I had the pork sausage and gluten-free toast. We were seated immediately, she tried to sit us at a tiny table, and we asked to be switched to a booth, which she accommodated us. Our waitress came out quickly and took our order, and our food came out relatively quickly. The temperature of the food was fine, my husband liked his meal. My meal was fine, except that the gluten-free toast was overcooked and pretty much burnt. I think the service could've been better. She took our order and people from the kitchen delivered it and she really never came back to ask if we needed anything else and just dropped off the ticket. As far as "chain" breakfast restaurant goes, this is by far THE BEST in the area. You know it's good when you order the same thing over and over and over again and the food consistently tastes the same and hits the spot every single time. With that being said, I always order the Million Dollar Bacon and Salmon Frittata every single time. I highly recommend giving this combo a try! Service wise, I've always been greeted with a smile and less than a 10 min wait each time. They're quick to refill drinks and tend to your table in a timely manner! It's been years since I've been to First Watch so I decided to try it out again. We checked in online to cut the wait and that was definitely worth it because they were busy. The lobby area isn't very spacious so it gets crowded quick and it makes you feel like no matter where you stand, your in the way. So definitely put your name on the list ahead of time. We started with a couple of brunch cocktails that I was quite frankly surprised they had. My dining companion got the Bloody Mary and I got the Morning Glory. They came out in cute little carafes and the juice was really fresh. The Morning Glory consisted of New Amsterdam Gluten Free Vodka, orange, lemon, turmeric, organic ginger and agave nectar. You could really taste the turmeric and ginger. I got the Blt Benedict-Two poached cage-free eggs atop toasted ciabatta with bacon, vine-ripened tomato, avocado and lemon-dressed arugula and covered with hollandaise. The ciabatta made it awkward to eat and hard to cut but it was good. The bacon was tasty and the lemon really stood out. The eggs were also perfectly poached and all the produce was fresh. I did swap out the salad it came with for potatoes. Overall it was good and they have an extensive menu that works for everyone. read more

Dan the manager working Saturday was so accommodating. I had ordered the salmon frittata with the greens and a kids meal french toast, Turkey sausage, and orange juice. Oh how I love their oj. Heavy gym day and I need it. Placed my order online and when I got there it was ready. There are a few things I would like to clear up before proceeding. The kids cup have been replaced with just a small cup due to covid(kids cups were to expensive to keep in inventory so the just switched to adult small, now they do not fill it up bc technically it's supposed to be for a child so do not get upset if your kids juice isn't to the brim of the cup. Also they can no longer keep toothpicks and mints out due to this as well. I did not know this so upon arrival I seen a half of a cup of juice and was like umm no. But technically yes this is correct and he explained to me so nicely and still filled it up for me. If you place an order online and for any reason you want to receive a refund you will have to call a number and wait 3-5 business days, also they are closed on the weekends, gotta love what COVID has done to the world. Like most first watch it was a nice crowd, the restaurant was clean but I'm a firm believer of what sets these chains apart are the people. This is why they get a 5. I have been to this location twice. It is ok but not something that I would highly recommend. It does get busy so I would be ready for a wait or plan to come when it is not breakfast/lunch hour. By the time he brought it the waiter had just dropped one off (after I had reminded him I asked for it earlier). Now I know, its only a cup of ice, but when a pregnant woman needs ice for her water you get her that ice. Anyhoo, I got the trifecta this time with a multigrain pancake, overhard eggs, and extra crispy bacon. I think the cook didn't calculate how long it would take to fully cook the bacon and eggs before starting the pancake because it was only luke warm while the bacon and eggs were perfectly hot. First Watch always delivers a superb breakfast. We typically go to the one in Shawnee, but on this day we're headed out towards Lee's Summit, so the location on Metcalf made more sense. We utilized the online wait-list and boy am I glad. It said the wait was about 15-20 minutes but by the time we walked in, they were slammed. One of the downsides of this location is how small their wait area is. There were so many people waiting to be seated they were almost hovering around seated tables because there was nowhere else to stand. Our weight was pretty much exactly somewhere within the 15 to 20 minutes before we were seated. It did take a bit of time for the waitress to take our order, but it was understandable due to just how busy they were. We also didn't mind the wait because they kept us in fresh coffee the whole time. When it was our turn to order we both ordered off of their seasonal menu. I tried there pork green chile hash, which was amazing. The pork was tender and well-trimmed and was just an explosion of green chili pork flavor. It came with two eggs which I ordered over hard, two tortillas, lime crema, and pickled red onions. The hash itself was the pork, diced potatoes, and onion. I made little tacos with all the ingredients and it was perfect. My husband ordered the barbacoa Breakfast Burrito and like the pork the barbacoa was tender and well seasoned. We both finished our plates. We have yet to have a bad experience or dislike the food we've ordered from First Watch and that makes it our go to breakfast spot, no matter the location. read more

The husband and I generally like First Watch. They cook actual food, it's a nice atmosphere, and service is usually adequate. However, I've become a bit frustrated on our last several visits to this location. On one occasion, I ordered the BLTE sandwich with greens, but received the elevated egg sandwich with potatoes. Upon mentioning this to the server, she immediately admitted that she had put in the wrong item and would get it replaced. Now, I understand that mistakes happen, but I had to wait for my meal all over again, and the husband finished his in the meantime, which kind of defeats the purpose of going out to eat together. On another occasion, both of our meals were lukewarm at best. Additionally, it didn't look like the greens had ANY dressing on them whatsoever -- just dry, undressed salad greens on the plate. PLUS, in hindsight, I realized the the modern Croque Madame sandwich is described as having fresh tomato in the sandwich and fresh herbs on top (also pictured in the photo)...but neither of these were present on my plate. Since we were on a bit of a schedule, we didn't send anything back, but now I really wish we had. The server was very apologetic and brought us salad dressing, but for the premium prices that they're charging (and there was not even a modest discount offered on either occasion), it doesn't seem like too much to expect that they deliver HOT food that's actually been completed per their menu description. It shouldn't be on me to insist that they uphold the standards that they are setting with their menu and surroundings. I'd like to avoid having a third disappointing experience, so next time we go out for breakfast/brunch, I'll think twice before returning to First Watch. read more

Even in the midst of a pandemic First Watch remains loyal, professional & customer driven. This makes my heart smile. A recent visit during the busiest of times (Christmas) proved to be a most pleasant dining experience. The hostess had me at hello. She was sweet & hospitable & it was obvious that she had a winning personality. I was seated & acknowledged with care on a very crowded day. The waitress hustled to serve others & let me know she would be with me shortly (I seldom experience being acknowledged when it's not busy so this was a plus). My order was taken & breakfast (The Works omelette, fruit & toast) was served in a timely manner considering the crowd. It was very appetizing & an adequate portion...enough for two meals. Everyone that I encountered was exceptionally kind (it's just nice to be nice) & the restaurant had adequate staffing (many do not). We put ourselves on the waiting list on their app. When we arrived, we were seated immediately. Employees bussing the table next to us had their butts directly in our faces for the first 5 minutes or so. I say spatial awareness is key to working in a busy restaurant. I prefer ZERO butts in my face. I ordered the mushroom frittata, which I've tried previously and loved. Mom got pumpkin pancakes. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time. Maybe a little long, but a big group was there, so might have affected the timing. The ciabatta bread that comes with the frittata had a ton of seasoning salt on it. It was barely edible; so salty it took your breath away. It was an end piece that had been over toasted. You might have been able to kill a vampire with it. I'd have to read up on the "stake" requirements. The frittata also had heap of shallots in it that either were very undercooked or just overwhelming their quantity. Again, I've had this dish before so I was a little disappointed it wasn't quite as delicious as the first time. Mom liked her pancake fine. She said the bacon wasn't that exciting. Of First Watch, I can't say that I love the place: the prices are high with a flair for the "hipsterian sentiment." But if you're not wolfing down their criminally wonderful million-dollar bacon, you should be tearing through a pick two of exactly my design. I've tried a lot of stuff at First Watch - nearly everything they make. All trash as far as I'm concerned, when considered from the eyes of a frugal with a modicum of home-grown breakfast cooking talents; albeit, what they make is entirely edible, if for instance you've just wrapped a marathon, or have $63 spare to feed a family of 3 on. No folks, push the salmon Benedict aside, don't even try any of the dry pancakes they make, or try your hand at the mess of hash dishes they scrape together and toss into a bowl. The key to a solid First Watch day is a pick two, avocado chop salad with roasted pecans, and their Havarti and roast beef sandwich on Ciabatta with picked onion to wash it down, with a side of citrus chipotle dressing to dip your roast beef into thusly. Lubricate everything with a kale tonic, and I'd say you're doing pretty fine with a capital Y. It doesn't cost a whole hell of a lot, so you maximize your value to cost ratio exponentially, you get plenty full, and it's absolutely perfect together. The chipotle dressing makes the sandwich a firework, and the salad just polishes all the edges up real nice - a solid an sparky way to start any day. I've eaten more breakfast things than I care to admit at First Watch, and I must say, I've not had one plate of pancakes, home fries and eggs, or english muffin mess to nullify the consistent draping of abject sadness that washes over with all the bad decisions I've made in my life after returning to my vehicle with a half-belly full of food sans $20, and my underwear pressed into my pocket. But this pick two concoction...it's something special, flickering from within, and arcing on all cylinders. Trust me. We had a great anniversary breakfast here. Bloody Mary was full of robust tomato flavor. I had the salmon frittata. There was a large portion of salmon in it, the greens were lemon zesty and fresh. The fried potatoes my husband had as a side were perfect. I did not taste his biscuits and gravy but he liked it quite a bit. Service was great, they paid great attention to wearing masks appropriately and spacing out patrons. If businesses want the majority of folks to come back to eat, management and ownership must take the leadership role and ensure masking by employees. First Watch is doing it right! read more
