This is my ABQ Beer Passport review for Calavida Cantina. Straight up, they are still growing. They supposedly offer 4 beers they brew. One is an IPA, so no bueno for me. They were out of their Dunkel Nico, which I really wanted to try. Their Mexican style lager is basic and not something I'd order with the other options. That left the Kellerbeir Keller style Pilsner which was ok. So, there will have to be another trip to determine if their beer is worth the trip. They do offer other local beers on tap, but that's not the point of this review. My street tacos were good, similar to Tap 'n Tacos. There was an obvious effort put into the menu and I really want to like it. But, my son has gotten sick both times we've eaten there. My opinion is that their food is super heavy on the seasonings. My own experience was that the Calavida loaded fries were extremely good but I had 2 bone chips in the carnitas. The fried cheese curds are the superstar for appetizers. Service was exceptional with the bartender on it. The patio is one of the best in Rio Rancho and the music was modern. there was a local musician setting up to play. This will be our go-to spot for jumping on the bike trail & finishing with a beer or tacos!

The food was goos but the service was so bad. We saw a waitress one time in over an hour of sitting at our table.

Parking can get quite scarce and cramped during busy dinner hours, on weekend nights, and when major sports events are happening, as the restaurant tends to fill up. Service was initially just okay. We waited about 5 minutes before anyone came to acknowledge our table. After that, servers poured multiple rounds waters and offered a few baskets of tortilla chips. Wildly different while still being so freaking amazing. There's a certain spice or something that they use in the Birria that hits just right. That's the only true way I can explain it. I can't tell if the 'consume' is chili or what from here? At Los Pookies it seems to be like a broth, but here is a thicker & spicier sauce which compliments the tacos so well. (please let me know!). It gets quite busy in here especially with it being setup as more of a sports bar, with the TV's and such. They have a shaded patio which I believe also may have a TV* (don't quote me on this part) . All the servers I have had have shown great hospitality. I will continue to return. -- Follow up before I post.. Last time I was here and it was really busy (like 30 min wait busy cuz of whatever game), I was feeling dizzy and they gave me water and a chair & made sure I was okay.. I feel especially this day and age is not something you see ever or expect. So thank you.

Float of kraken if you must, but use some Caribbean rum in there! Service was great, atmosphere left room for improvement. Great for a casual few drinks with your meal. Solid spot! It's a different location, but the food was just as good. We were greeted when we walked in an opted to sit outside. It was a little breezy, but felt good. I was feeling a salad so I ordered the BLT chopped salad with additional fried chicken. You can't go wrong with bacon! AND, the answer to avocado is always yes! It came with a champagne vinaigrette, which didn't really seem like enough, so I ordered a side of ranch. My partner didn't eat the pinon that came with her meal, so I threw those on my salad as well. My partner ordered the Pesto Pasta with grilled chicken. She also got a side of the sauteed balsamic mushroom. Whoa! Those mushrooms were delicious! For drinks she ordered the bourbon mule, and I got my typical IPA. The meal and drinks hit the spot. I can always count on Tula's to quench my thirst and fuel my appetite. The host and server were very polite. The place wasn't packed, so the ambiance was chill. On the way out we noticed they have a nice fire pit in the corner where you could chill, have a drink, and maybe some appetizers. It was a nice meal.

They do have a very nice patio but I was eating inside in lieu of out in the 95 degree heat and flies. I mentioned it to my very sweet server and she got me a battery fan to put on my table to shoo flies! (See pic) I ordered their wonderful Reuben w Caesar side and ate it with the fan shooing the flies while I ate inside. Seriously!! I did let her know the homemade croutons were stale and tough and not very edible. Service, food and drinks here are always very good and polite. I'll be back but not when the outside summer flies are taking over.

Because of those experiences, this review is disappointing to write. Our recent dine-in experience was completely different. The employee who took our order came across as impatient from the start. Before I had finished ordering, he gave me the total after I mentioned my sandwich. I had to stop him to add two drinks, he sighed, asked how many, and immediately gave me another total. When I added a Goo Ball, he grabbed it, set it on the counter, rang up the new total, and again acted as though I was finished ordering before I had the chance to ask for anything else. We had actually planned to order more, but the interaction made us feel like we were inconveniencing him simply by ordering. I work in the restaurant industry myself, so I understand that everyone has bad days. Had that been the only issue, I wouldn't have taken the time to leave a review. The reason I'm writing this is what happened after we sat down. A woman who appeared to be the employee's girlfriend came into the restaurant, and his demeanor changed immediately. While he was still on the clock, she stood at the front counter by the register, and for much of the time we were there they were engaged in prolonged, intimate kissing and embracing. My girlfriend and I were seated in the booth closest to the register, only a few feet away, and she was facing them the entire time. It made her genuinely uncomfortable, and there was no way to avoid it while we were eating. At one point, a DoorDash driver came in to pick up an order. The employee briefly pointed toward the back of the restaurant, said, "Over there, man," without even looking at the driver, and then immediately went back to his girlfriend. That interaction made it clear he was still actively working while all of this was happening. To be clear, this isn't about an employee greeting their significant other. A quick hug or kiss wouldn't have bothered us. This was prolonged, intimate behavior at the front register while customers were dining, and it felt completely inappropriate for the workplace. I do want to recognize the rest of the staff because they deserve it. Everyone else was working, and the bartender was friendly, professional, and provided excellent customer service throughout our visit. We'll continue ordering DoorDash because the food has always been consistently good, but we won't be dining in at this location again. We'd rather drive the extra 20 minutes to the Menaul location where we've always had positive experiences. I'm not looking for compensation or anything in return. I simply hope management is made aware of what happened because one employee's conduct turned what should have been an enjoyable lunch into an uncomfortable experience.
