Went for lunch at 12:45 on Sunday July 13. Grabbed menus, sat down and were greeted by a male server. Ordered a glass of wine and unsweetened tea. Waiter returned with drinks apologizing as they ran out of wine glasses. Had to wave him down to order our one appetizer and two meals. We also asked for silverware to which we were told we would receive it when we got our meal. 20 minutes later our meals arrived. We never got our appetizer. When I asked why, he look flustered and got mad saying I can't help it. I brought you your food as it came out. Besides the lousy service, he was mad at me for asking how you can serve a meal and then bring the starter afterwards. Never walked out of a restaurant for being treated badly in my life. I did today after paying for our wine and iced tea. Get out of the business if you don't want to serve people properly. I hope this real estate is filled by a restaurant that cares about its customers. read more

Any time you go to a town that has a lot of tourism, the local restaurants can be hit and miss. Many of these businesses don't need to rely on repeat business, because there's always new customers. On our recent visit to Custer, SD, near Mt Rushmore, we stopped for lunch at Calamity Jane Coffee Shop. I ordered the smoked salmon on everything bagel, and was shocked when they delivered it to me on just a plain bagel. Really wish they had told me they were out of everything bagels to give me a choice to order something else. It's not the same on a plain bagel. One of the children in our group ordered a grilled cheese, which took a long time and was the last person to get their order. My wife got the BLT, which had great bacon, but not much else and had a house made mayonnaise which was way different than expected. The help was friendly and overall the restaurant was clean. I probably wouldn't go back unless the full menu was available, which didn't seem to be the case. read more

I love this place! Their service is quick, lattes yummy and food is great! The sweet potato fries are some of the best I've ever had. They've remodeled and put in more booths and tables. They have a good selection of breakfast pastries which I haven't tried yet so can't vouch for their goodness. They are busy so to me that's a testament to their excellence. I almost forgot to mention their prices are VERY reasonable for a large portion. read more

Coffee is absolutely perfect- and I'm a bear about a perfect cup of coffee! The hot cocoa for my son was great as well. The fresh pastries were excellent. Cute place, good food but the service is terrible. Food was done fast but waitress left it so long it was cold when it came. (We could see it at the staff window when it was ready). This establishment is our go to place for breakfast before adventuring into custer state park. Always great food and service. Portions are large for breakfast, and one of the few coffee shops that has all the fixings. Appreciate that they are always open and not seasonal like a lot of the other places in town. My husband and I came to SD in November during off season but this place was open! It was delicious. He had the burger, I had the fish sandwich. Both very good and good portions. Great spot for a quick light breakfast in Custer. Bagel sandwich was very good as was the cinnamon roll. My daughter got a mango smoothie which she enjoyed and the coffee was pretty good. Stopped in for a quick coffee. It wasn't that busy, but the ladies behind the counter were preparing the orders ahead of us. Not a peep to welcome us, and one of them kept looking over her shoulder at us, like what are you doing here?!? She finished making the drink and flatly asked us if that was ours. I said we hadn't ordered yet and she turned away and started talking to her coworker. A few minutes later and not even a smile or welcome when we finally got the chance to order. We watched after our coffees arrived to see them doing much the same thing to the other patrons, except it was clear when they knew one. One of our drinks was also incorrectly prepared as well. Not sure why all the great reviews. We ordered a breakfast burrito, breakfast BLT, breakfast bagel, and an avocado toast, along with some coffees and iced tea. Person who took our order was curt, if not rude. The food was not bad, but the regular drip coffee was like being transported back to McDonalds in 1982. For those too young, that means it was essentially a cup of hot with maybe 3 drops of brown liquid to make it appear like coffee. I'd skip this place and try one of the other fine establishments in Custer. read more

Prices are very reasonable and you can tell it's a local place. The quality of their coffee is just okay. They use a sour bean so when you're drinking it black it has sour notes. They were out of a lot of things. A bit of a let down given the location. Has so much potential. read more

Stopped into this adorable café while visiting South Dakota and had the best burger I have had in ages! California burger with grilled onions and onion rings, was very delicious and also fried pickles I'm just sorry I didn't take pictures before it was half eaten lol also bought a couple bottles of wine from here. They have a a lot to choose from in the way of food, drink and bottles of local wine Service was great and she gave me wine testers to make sure I got the wine I wanted! Great place for coffee, wine or snacks. The owners are super nice and the staff really knows how to brew a cup of coffee or espresso. This used to be the old time photo business that was in Custer for over 20 years. I can remember getting pictures taken here when I was younger. They have lots of fun gifts like shirts and coffee mugs as well as a large selection of local wines. They do wine tasting in the back area. Its a really fun place to drop in and sit to enjoy a coffee and talk with locals. read more

We are spending our last day in Custer catching up with old friends and grabbing breakfast before we head home. While our server bri was absolutely lovely some of the other staff were absolutely rude. She ran our drinks while bri was helping someone else we asked for a water w lemon and she looked at us like we were stupid. My husband and I have eaten here multiple times. It is predominately a coffee shop. With that in mind, they serve food for both breakfast and lunch. Service varies depending on time of day and crowd. They only have room for 1 cook, and 1 assistant in rhe kitchen which desperately slows down food delivery. They are as quick as they can be with them lack of kitchen space & room to work. Delicious coffee, food, and a wonderful ambiance! We were greeted right away with a smile. I got the breve with caramel and my husband got the medium roast coffee (black) and we both enjoyed our coffees. We also shared the Sassy Cowgirl breakfast sandwich and OMG was it a delicious, creamy, mouthwatering delight to eat. The service was very friendly and quick. We stopped here one morning for breakfast to go while visiting Custer State Park. It has indoor seating. We ordered a Matcha and Mocha latte (cold) it was yum. We got the Western and the Sassy cowgirl breakfast bagel. They were excellent. We enjoyed eating them at Sylvan lake. Definitely recommend this place. read more
