Cal's Bake Shop was such a fun pop in and absolutely knocked my socks off with their Cronut which I've been dying to try! Specifically, I tried the Maple Glazed Cronut and it was amazing!!!! They somehow managed to take everything I love about a croissant, perfectly crispy yet soft and flaky layers, and turn it into this incredible doughnut situation. The maple glaze on top was the perfect finishing touch and made the whole thing feel extra indulgent. I also tried the Brioche Berry Lemon Doughnut, which was very tasty. It had plenty of filling with a great balance of berry and lemon, and the outside was pillowy soft with a sugar coating that made every bite even better. Both were delicious in completely different ways, and I already know I will be back to try more. Cal's is definitely a spot worth checking out if you love creative pastries and really well made doughnuts. I suggest getting there earlier if possible to get the best selection as the cashier told me they usually sell out very quickly. I stopped in midday, and there were only a few of the days selections left. There in the old Rocco's building so seating is limited. I really wanted to like this place so much. Very clean cute decor. 3 cronuts and 2 small cold brews plus 15% tip well over $30 I actually ordered 4 donuts but maybe was unheard? Weird. Didn't realize til getting home, so someone had to go without. Tried to ask questions but seemed like I was just 'bothering' staff. Curt responses and no further explanation about anything for me. Also charged $1 extra separately for 'filling' ??? that was inside two of the cronuts or something? Still not sure. They were already filled. Is that common nowadays? This is such a cute bake shop! I'm not usually over this way, but I had an appointment in the area and decided to treat myself to a post-appointment coffee and pastry. It's a cute and casual vibe in here. I didn't realize it was mostly/all vegan pastries but honestly, you couldn't tell the difference or at least I couldn't. We got a smattering of the doughnut croissants, and I paired it with an ube latte. I was surprised there weren't more traditional donuts. It seems like they work in pretty small batches but the flavors here were definitely unique. I just wouldn't recommend going in expecting it to be kind of like your mom and pop donut shop. I feel a little late to the game...but, today I finally went in to Cal's and....it was OUTSTANDING! They are located in the old Rocco's pizza/wing spot on Broadway. The parking is easy with lots of spaces. I've heard such fantastic things about their baked goods, specially, their cronuts, so I decided to try the July flavor. Absolutely, delicious! I've had cronuts in the past but nothing like Cal's, light, airy flavorful, and perfect frosting. They do sell out almost daily, so going early is a must. Also, they sell local coffee, and make various drinks. I tried the horchata latte, and it was just perfect! Can't wait to head back in to this fun spot for more! read more

If you're looking for tasty pastries, Cal's Bakeshop is definitely a good place to stop in the morning. They have a monthly rotating menu (be sure to check out their Instagram for the offerings) as well as some standards that they always stock. We unfortunately weren't able to try some of their monthly specials because they weren't in the display case, but chose 4 pastries to take home and were overall satisfied. Our favorites were the Nutella brioche (so fluffy on the outside and filled with that delicious chocolate hazelnut filling - good balance, they don't skimp on the filling but it doesn't oversell the entire donut) and the strawberry crunch cronut (flaky cronut texture with a delicious strawberry icing). The maple glazed cronut and glazed brioche were pretty good too but did not quite shine like the other two. My husband also grabbed an ube latte which he initially felt tasted not quite authentic ube but grew on him as he had more of it. We'll be back to try more of their pastries - the rotating monthly menu is so intriguing! read more

I've never had cronuts or brioche donuts before visiting Cal's and they are absolutely delicious. Cal's carries such unique flavors and mostly all options are vegan too!! My faves so far are their maple Cronut and chocolate dipped conchas. The Ube Latte is one of the better Ube lattes I've had, and I also enjoy the horchata latte too. The vanilla latte was not sweet enough for my taste personally, but if that's your thing then I still recommend (: don't forget to double check their store hours! Visited Cal's Bakeshop via a Yelp event! Had a fabulous time! From the minute you walk in the decor makes you feel like you're walking in to a small time diner that sells pastries! I had three donuts, and they were amazing! The fact that the donuts are vegan was a nice surprise! I'm not vegan but these tasted really good! They do have non vegan but mostly all donuts are vegan. I had the brioche pineapple cheesecake donut...for someone who doesn't like donut fillings...this was yummy!! Also, had a traditional Concha and a cronut blackberry/lime cronut (seasonal). All good! I even bought some donuts to take home! The owner was at the event and he shared his story! Great story, and he and his staff were welcoming! I've been wanting to check out Cal's Bake Shop for a while and finally stopped by -- and it did not disappoint. I ordered a concha, a raspberry cookie donut, and a latte, and everything was so good. The concha was soft, fresh, and had that perfect lightly sweet crumb on top. The raspberry cookie donut was honestly my favorite -- super unique with great flavor and the perfect texture. And the latte paired perfectly with the pastries. The shop itself felt really cozy and welcoming, and you can tell everything is made with care. But what they had was really good and there were vegan options too. They gave out a small bundle of beautiful flowers or lavender from Thistle to the moms, which was a really thoughtful touch. Stopped I to this spot on a Sunday morning and it was such a vibe! Incredibly friendly and patient staff! The pastries were really flavorful, fresh and featured a bunch of unique options to choose from! They had a steady stream of customers and you could tell people come regularly! Great pastries, though a bit on the pricey side. When I went, there was a line before opening but the owner was out there controlling the line and chatted with everyone as we waited, which was a nice welcoming touch. Not sure if they always do but when I went they limit how many pastries you can buy per visit. Seating inside is limited, but there's more available outside and now that the weather is cooler, it's actually pretty comfortable out there. The chocolate-dipped conchas were delicious and I really enjoyed the cronuts and the ube latte as well. Overall, it's definitely worth trying at least once but I wouldn't necessarily consider it a regular go to spot. read more

I stopped in recently to catch the June flavors before they switch and was super impressed ! I have been a follower on instagram but this was my first time in. I love that they took over the old Rocco's Pizza spot keeping the sign out front but revamping it with Cal's logo and giving the whole place a fresh vibe. The parking lot is great and a decent size. The interior is sleek and cool. I love the glass pastry case right as you walk in and the art wall in the back. Theres some seating indoors and a closed in patio on the side as well. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Got a chance to meet Cal himself , super nice guy! And OMG the doughnuts.. so good and sweet and just overall delicious and Vegan!!! I got the two June cronuts (mango tajin & blackberry lime ) both slap AND I even ate the glazed brioche the next day and it was still amazing. My husband and I have enjoyed donuts from Cal's for years. Initially from pop up events, then I'd go to Cuppa GoGo to pick up Cronuts, and then the store. What a wonderful dream now realized. On Broadway, in the former Location of Rocco's Pizza, Cal's Bakeshop is located. There is a selection of coffees make to order. I've enjoyed the Ube latte that they offer. It's pretty tasty. However, on my last visit on Saturday, they had a Kermit( the frog) special and had was mango purée with sparkling seltzer drink,that was so unexpected and delicious. A big reason I enjoyed cow bake shop is because they offered cronut where it's not available. Very many places in Tucson. When I first started getting cronuts, I expected pastry cream inside and flaky layers of croissant. However, his is his own thing and often is just the flaky layers with a glaze or a topping. The menu consists of conchas, filled donuts, and Cronuts. Please checkout his instagram page because there is a significant media presence. In addition to being a bakery often times in the evening, they host a night market in the parking lot so it's nice not to just only be a bake house but offer fun things to enjoy in addition. Check the website for hours because I believe Fridays and Saturdays they have evening hours in addition to their typical morning hours. They dont have any regular donuts to easily compare them to other donut shops in town, but I did get a simple glazed brioche donut and a few others. Four donuts and a coffee cost over $30, and then the cashier prompts for a 20% tip, so its not exactly budget friendly. A good standard donut is usually light and fluffy, their brioche version is heavy and very doughy. It was tasty, but I personally was not a big fan of the heavy dough style. Also got a few specialty that were mostly just ok. Their niche seems to be using non standard doughs to make donughts, like croissant or brioche. They were interesting, but mostly just felt like a gimmick that while worth experiencing, wouldn't bring me back for more. The interior was bright, clean, and well decorated, but the seating layout was poorly executed. There were only three couples in the dining area, but it didnt feel like there was any place left to sit unless we wanted to make new friends with strangers. Also, the cashier is very close to the entrance door which means if there are more than three people in line, you have to stand outside in the heat until you can step inside. The worst part of the experience was the way they pack their donuts. Even though we were eating there, each donut went into its own individual single use plastic container. These are not recyclable in Tucson and I would have much preferred to carry my donuts to my table on even just a napkin if it had been a choice. The paperboard containers used by every other donut shop in existence are at least compostable and they only use one container for all your donuts. In conclusion, they make tasty and unique style donuts in a nicely renovated but poorly organized building that are overpriced while showing little regard for the enviorment. read more

Today was Cal's Donuts Bakeshop grand opening. Oh boy was it grand! The line went on forever and they ran out of pastries at 11:15 am. I was not fortunate to taste their pastries today, but what I did see that was just as sweet. The two owners personally came out thanking the individuals in back of the line and apologized for running out. They both had great personalities were soft spoken and hand shook all who were there. I asked them to stand in front of their sign for me. They honored my request, and boom I got the first shot. Maybe it was an off day ... but my first experience was meh. Tried the cherry chocolate cronut and the blueberry cinnamon roll. The cronut was very disappointing. It was super oily and even the icing which by itself could be pretty good couldn't cover the greasiness. The blueberry cinnamon rolls looked good and I appreciate the generous portion of blueberries... but again it didn't hit the spot... but it was better than the cronut which I could not finish. Donuts were good but definitely pricey on average $6.50 per donut . Coffee was okay and also pricey, plus the cup wasn't filled all the way. The guy working Husky was rude and short both times I came in--zero friendliness. Rude when asked how the point system worked. I asked how it work "don't know I'm not on that side." In a town full of donut stores and bakeries Cal's Bakeshop stands out for their creative flavors and high quality execution on so many levels. We've enjoyed their baked goods from their food truck for years, but we're so excited for their brick and mortar store. Our family stopped by the Sunday soft opening a few weeks back. We got there 30 mins before opening and there was already a line. The staff were kind enough to hand out bottles of water to keep us cool and hydrated while we waited. They have indoor and outdoor seating with fun donut themed art throughout. There were too many choices, so we went with a pumpkin cheesecake brioche donut, the chocolate caramel cronut and a Salvadoran quesadilla. The flaky layers on the cronut were surperb and the pumpkin cheesecake hit those autumn vibes big time. The Salvadoran quesadilla was similar to cornbread, but so much better. It was tender, buttery and so tasty. It was my favorite by far. I hear it's Cal's mom's recipe. If the bake shop is closed or if I'm not nearby I know I can get my Cal's fix and the various Bisbee Breakfast Clubs around town. read more

I came back on Wednesday, the first day open after the weekend grand opening, and opted for the Ube latte with a cronut. Both were delicious of course, but I was especially happy that Tucson coffee cricket's Ube latte has found a home at Cal's bakeshop.
