My home has close to 30 windows, so the cost of replacing them would have been very high if I had chosen a more reputable window replacement company. But as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. This company offers low prices, but it's clear the owner has never even held a hammer. He couldn't measure the windows correctly, and for two of the installations, his team had to return the windows after finally taking the correct measurements. They replaced about 17 in total at my home. I wish they hadn't. As for his team, they don't even work for him directly. One had a heavy Eastern European accent and told me he works for another company but helps this guy after hours or on his days off. The crew, consisting of two workers (the other also being a weekend warrior), both had terrible attitudes. One of the windows was installed so poorly that I experienced water damage in the bedroom after heavy rain. The owner was no help at all. He was in Vegas, trying to contact his crew, but they never returned his calls. He even yelled at me for putting pressure on him, saying it wasn't his fault that his crew wasn't responding. This guy is a joke. Why am I posting this after so many years? I recently discovered that the reason wasps are getting into my master shower is because his so-called 'weekend warrior' didn't even bother to seal the window. I submitted requests to multiple companies for quotes. Mike was the only one to call me back promptly and come out for an estimate same day. His price was reasonable and he seemed pretty knowledgeable. He was good about determining which side to slide to improve airflow. We signed the deal same day. It was a little annoying he usually only takes cash so I had to pay the credit card fee but I was happy to get started. One of the things we discussed was that I was ordering blinds that were going to be set induce the frame so I needed at least 2 inches of frame/will to mount the blinds. Mike said no problem and assured me I could order the blinds. I waited weeks for the windows and finally called to check. I was told they were coming and I was scheduled for that Saturday. No one had checked prior to see if that was ok. I was going out of town but figured I could make it work. That morning they told me they couldn't do it. They didn't come back until Tuesday. One guy on his own. Remy was nice and friendly. I got home and saw the windows had been set so far into the frames that the blinds stuck out. I paid $3000 for the blinds and was not happy that they would now look funny. Mike and Remy suggested they could re-frame the windows with a thicker trim to offset the overlap. They would also need to install new window sills since there wasn't much room to even put a small plant. Remy installed all 7 windows in one day and came back the next day to finish the trim. He informed me one of my screens was missing and he would have to get me another one. It has been 3 months and I still don't have that screen. Multiple times Remy said he would come out but another job airways interfered or was cancelled and he apparently couldn't be bothered to waste a trip just to bring my screen. I have spoken to Mike a couple times about it but still no screen. When the install was complete Remy expected cash payment. I told him that Mike and I already discussed using a card. Mike called me the next day to arrange payment. Multiple times I confirmed the amount with him, it was in writing, and yet he charged my card $200 more than we agreed upon. I told him to hold it for now because I was going to have them do the sills. Since they have been so flaky about the screen, I decided I didn't want them to do the sills/frames. I have called Mike multiple to ask for my refund and inquire about my screen. 5 months later I am still waiting for my refund and my screen. I also sent both him and Remy messages showing how the trim had already started peeling away but neither responded. Based on service alone I say 1 start but the windows are good so I gave 2 them 2 stars. I would suggest not paying for the job until it is completely done. NO STARS...Do NOT USE !!! This guy is truly a salesman who CANNOT back his work. My windows are leaking. Floor damage to original hardwood floors and ceiling damage to the unit below. He had his man use foam to secure the window and didn't use wood leaving big gaps. My General Contractor went behind him to finish the inside of the windows framing them out THEN he added the trim wood. Also, could not pass the City of Oakland permit process until I hired another General Contractor to put window locks on my 2-bay windows (child-proofing) required by the City. These are things a professional window person would know. A few days after filing with the BBB the original contractor Emmy came back to finish the job. It was a half-ass attempt and the job was poorly done. Now I am here more than a year later and am about to pay someone to come back and undo some of the shoddy work done and have it done right. Looking back I realize that Cal is very good at his job, which is to say he is a good snake oil salesman. He convinced me he was the person for the job but his employee did not share his enthusiasm. The windows they installed are fine but all of the additional work he upsold me look awful and the amount of regret I feel because of it is worse than the money I spent on it. This is my home and every time I look at the trim, the windowsills, and the crap job they did in installing them, the angrier I get. We approached Mike Calhoun in early May to provide us with a quote for replacing two large sliding doors and two windows in the back of our home. Mike's quote for the work was fully 40% lower than Home Depot and Sears, which concerned me enough to request several references from him for consultation. All four of the references that I contacted from Mike had GLOWING appraisals of his work, professionalism and installation quality. All were recent jobs in the East Bay. As a result, I gave the contract to Mike in early June. My experience with his installation crew and foreman was exemplary! Immediately (same day) after giving Mike the order, his foreman showed up at the house and re-measured the windows to make sure that we had a perfect fit. 10 days after the order was placed, they called me to let me know that they had the windows in and were ready to install. We had them come out 3 days later. The crew showed up promptly at 8am and immediately went to work. The installation went off without a hitch. They sealed the windows and doors up completely and the workmanship is awesome. The windows and doors look great! MIke suggest that we consider a bay window in the kitchen, which we went with and are so glad we did. It opened up the kitchen to the back yard - adding strong appeal to the entire back of the house! I would recommend mike to anyone! We will have him install the remaining windows in the house next year. I would not worry about the negative reviews that appear in Yelp on his company - - these are likely competitors who are tired of getting their butts kicked by Mike! read more

I'm a happy customer. Pros: - Quick estimate. Mike was the first one to get back to me out of the four contractors I reached out to. - Price. Mike's price was lowest of all the bids I received. - Eye for detail and design. Mike spent a good amount of time in my home discussing design ideas and window options. We made a few changes that turned out great. - Flexibility. I spent months deciding over options. Mike was flexible and was able to work with each of the changes I requested. - Experience. Mike has been doing this for a long time. He knows what he's doing. - Family business feel. I think Mike's dad started the company. Certainly feels like a small family run business. This is a good thing. Mike is the owner and he will know you by name. - Installation. The installers were excellent. Emmy and his assistant TJ (who apparently is his father... again, family business) were quick, considerate, and professional. They have a combined 35 years of experience installing windows. True tradesmen. Cons: - Communication could be better. Although I appreciate the old school way of doing things (Mike took my order with just a verbal go-ahead over the phone), the lack of formalities could make some feel a little uneasy. - Mike estimated that he could install in roughly 2 weeks. In truth installation happened about a month after I placed my order. Not a problem for me, but again for others that may be a concern. All in all I am very happy with the service and final product. I contacted Mike from Cal Enterprises for an estimate on new double paned windows for my mobile home, I need a sound barrier from the very noisy street I live on. Mike had the best price and excellent sales pitch, I felt I could trust him. First of all his crew was 5 hrs. late. Second the window frame's were improperly measured but that did not matter to them because they never took out the old windowsill's or aluminum frames, they set the ill fitting window's in the old frame's which left about a quarter in. space all the way around each window, then proceeded to cover all the frames with vinyl strips and caulking so no one can see the spaces. Because these windows Do Not Fit Snug into the Window Frames I have just as much Noise as before. Also the window in the bathroom was installed in such a Faulty Manner that the Alignment is CROOKED. Bottom line I can hear my neighbor talking to her husband outside my window's, and I'm worried they will leak water sense none of the existing leakage issues that I talked with Mike about at the signing of the contract were addressed. read more

Sold on the idea of new double-paned windows since I had the original windows from 1982. The quality of the product is definitely outstanding. But customer service lacked and installation quality of the workers was messy. I understand that the workers will need to be inside and outside the house, but have the courtesy to ask if shoes are to be removed or lay down covers on the floor. The man just walked straight into my house without asking about his shoes seeing that my shoes were removed and all my kids' shoes were off, too. They had to come back 3 times and each time was a mess. I dreaded each time they came because I knew I had to wipe the floors again. Just wanted them to be done and gone. They also do not wipe down the windows which I was not aware of. So my top window had all their fingerprints on them. I had to find a window cleaner off Groupon to do my windows after Calhoun was done. I agree with both reviews dated 7/19/2015. read more

In August of this year, I found a window and door company called Cal Enterprises in Danville. They installed three French doors and fourteen windows in 1904 Berkeley brown shingle. I'd gotten four previous bids, and theirs was the lowest. I chose them, I think just because I felt more comfortable with their owner, Mike Calhoun. What was an added bonus was that he helped us a lot with design issues, something I hadn't even thought about . After no response from Mike regarding my service needs, I filed a service request through the Simonton website and received a follow-up call from them within a few days letting me know that they had ordered the necessary parts and someone would be contacting me to schedule the repair service. Within one week Garth Forster called and scheduled my service call for the following week. As it turns out, he's a licensed contractor who has represented Simonton for 20 years or so, and sells, installs and services them as well. He was a very nice professional guy who also lives in Danville. So, if you want a bid from him, he can be contacted at 925 858-5343. He invited me to contact him anytime should I have a service need.....despite the fact that he didn't profit from selling me my windows, however Mike did, and not there when I needed him. I contracted Cal Enterprises and Mike to replace 13 windows, 2 french sliding doors, and a garden window. Mike came out to my home and it was very obvious after 30 minutes that he really knew his stuff. With his construction expertise and suggestions we made several non routine changes. The windows that we chose were by Simonton and were installed perfectly. At no time did we feel pressured into making a hasty decision. We proceeded to get two more bids of which both were substantially higher in price, and we did not feel as comfortable with the salesman that came out. Mike, as owner obviously had the flexibility to do whatever we wanted to do. My wife and I talked over all the possibilities that the three of us came up with and made a decision within a week. We were relieved to hear that there was no deposit required thus easing any concerns. It's been over 6 months since the windows have been put in, and we've been through a summer and winter and they're fantastic. While we're in a very cold winter currently we're amazed at how well the new windows are performing. Mike had represented that they would be very good and I would honestly say that they've exceeded both our expectations. Cal Enterprises was hired by my landlord to replace my windows. I initially talked to Mike and he gave me a date for when they would come to do it. I didn't hear anything from them until about a week and a half later, when they scheduled to come in that Tuesday. They called that morning to cancel, and told me they would call me back later that afternoon to reschedule. I didn't receive a call that day. Thursday morning they knocked on my door, without having called, and said they were there to replace my windows. I expressed my dissatisfaction, and they apologized and told me about how professional they were (which didn't really make sense considering the delays and them showing up unannounced). When I came back to lock up my apartment after they were finished, they again bragged about how professional they were and how great of a job they did. They said they vacuumed my apartment, but suggested I do it again just in case there were any glass shards. And there were plenty- covering my table, in various storage containers, on furniture, and even on the windowsills. Apparently they didn't do a great job of vacuuming either, because while I was doing it again I got a piece of glass stuck in my foot (very painful and bloody). They also left marks on my table and moved furniture without making any attempt to move it back where they found it. Although the windows seem to be fine so far, it has been a pain (figuratively and literally) cleaning up after their mess. Being a company that specializes in replacing windows, one would think that they would be more respectful and have more efficient ways of preventing a mess and keeping glass shards from ending up all over and in their customers' items. read more

Mike is a good salesman but ordered wrong sizes of sliders. and wanted me to pay to reorder of the correct sizes. He assured me these would fit ok, with a little trimming. The installers had to take 2 inches off top and a couple on each side, and floor to put them in. This of course, was a dirty dusty job, still cleaning dust. Too boot, one slider pulls the wrong way. I must say the crew who did the windows was wonderful, but they wouldn't put these sliders in because of size differences. Had to wait till Mike could find another crew of 2, who would do it. Extremely disappointed with the lack of professionalism experienced with this company and Mike Calhoun in particular. He blew off first appointment which was scheduled a week in advance. Then rescheduled for another time and he arrived almost an hour late. However, we were impressed with his extensive knowledge and recommendations. We decided to listen to the glowing reviews and ignored the bad ones and awarded him the business. Well lesson learned, do not ignore the bad reviews! After more than 2 weeks of trying to get a hold of Mike via phone, texts and emails, to confirm job and install date. Absolutely no response from him in 2 weeks, he finally responded with "we decided to pass on the job". He provided some lame excuse that he couldn't install Anderson windows because something always goes wrong with them. Why would he spend almost 2 hours at our home convincing us that this was the way to go, to later tell us Anderson is a bad choice. I think Cal Enterprises was the bad choice. read more

We hired Mike to repair our windows. At first seemed like Mike is very professional and will stick to his words...that's a BIG MISTAKE. We WOULD NOT recommend his company for any work. His contractor Luis did not do a good job, one of our windows leaked during the little rain. After making 9-10 appointments with them, no response. None of them came to repair our windows even after 3 months of going back and forth. On top of this un-professional attitude, they have the attitude as if they are doing a favor. I've seen estimates for $12k for a similar product where Mike and Cal Enterprises Construction comes in at $7500... Virtually the same product and Low-e glass for $4500 less!? Plus the best warranty hands down makes Cal Enterprises the best choice by far. They have a low overhead and don't do a ton of advertising which makes the bottom line so sweet. Five Stars/Five Stars and consider yourself lucky to find such an awesome company. I worked with Mike years ago, full disclosue but everything I say is true, cross my heart. Mike won't let you down. He's not an internet guy but if he were there would be nothing but 5 star reviews because, construction will always have it's issues but what really matters is how the company responds and Mike will fix any issue that may arise and he backs it up with a 10 year installation warranty and the lifetime manufactures warranty. I never had a single unresolved issue. Not one. Mike is the real deal! CEC has an A+ BBB RATING for a reason. Peace! We first met Mike C. of Cal Enterprises over a year and a half ago. My husband and I were quite impressed with his presentation, friendliness, and the bid he submitted. However, due to other projects that precluded us being able to replace our windows, we put the project on hold. Mike contacted us again about 6 months ago. He had not forgotten us and just wanted to know how we were and if we had ever replaced our windows. We had not yet. It was a very pleasant phone call with no pressure from Mike. We were impressed with his follow-up and in February 2016, decided it was the right time to resume the project of replacing our windows. Mike came over again to discuss the details of the project, had the original bid in hand so we could review, and in the end, committed to the project of replacing all the windows in our home on just a handshake. A few weeks later, Mike W. came over to commence the project. He and his crew were done in 2 and a half days. Mike W. did come back a couple of weeks later to finish a few finishing touches that we had requested. We now have absolutely gorgeous new windows, a new garden window, and new sliding glass door with beautiful trim! I had 11 windows and 3 sliding glass doors(Simonton Daylight Max) installed by Cal Enterprises earlier this month. My experience with Mike Calhoun and his crew was positive from start to finish(slightly over 2 weeks from contract to completion.) Mike not only quoted the lowest price of about 8 quotes, it was his first quote. Others seemed to negotiate their prices. I was particularly impressed by his suggestions for styling the windows in ways to get best advantage of the views and at no extra cost. No other salesman made those suggestions and I love the results. He and his crew were conscientious throughout the installation. They even made a few repairs to my balcony without additional charge. I must say I almost didn't hire this company because of the negative reviews on Yelp, but I liked Mike and when I checked his references they were all excellent. I had my first and second floors of my townhouse replaced by another company several years ago. Called the company back to complete the final 5 windows, two large picture windows two large sliders and a small slider. They provided an estimate that was outrageous. I called Mike at Cal Enterprises and he (the owner) showed up very quickly. I realized we had met years ago when a had a leak in my townhouse and the HOA said it was my window. Mike showed up then and said its not your window its your roof. He could have sold me new windows but was honest. So he shows up this spring and gives a fair competitive price. Now the installers did it in three separate visits due to weather, roof replacement... I spent over 28 years in the FBI dealing with dishonest folks and can tell you it was a pleasure to deal with Mike Calhoun. When you call him, even on Easter weekend he answers.
