a tea pot and a cup on a table
    Josephine M.

Back in 2019 we went for High Tea at Cakes n Sweets in Coquitlam. All of us loved it back then and when we found ourselves wanting to go for High Tea again recently, we could think of no better place to go than to Cakes n Sweets. We were a party of five and two of us (our daughter and myself) had a Vegetarian High Tea while the other three had the regular High Tea. I was pleased to learn that they could offer a Vegetarian menu as there's no mention of it on their website.Over the years, High Tea has become extraordinarily expensive. When we went to Cakes n Sweets back in 2019, it was the only place where we could get High Tea for less then $30 per person. The price has gone up slightly from what it was previously. It's now $33 per person; however, that's still a lot less than what most other places charge. For High Tea, it's still the best deal I know of.  Most of us had tea; however, there was one person in our group who doesn't like tea and so she opted for hot chocolate instead. What a delight it was to see that they served the hot chocolate in a teapot just like the rest of us who were having tea. The food was superb, just as it was the last time we came; however, there was one item that had changed and that was the egg salad sandwich. When we came back in 2019, they served us egg salad sandwiches inside mini croissants. This time they used regular sandwich bread. Our daughter and I would have much preferred them to have used the mini croissants again. I'm giving them 4 stars instead of 5 since they now use regular sandwich bread instead of the mini croissants. Other than that, the food was wonderful. Parking is plentiful and free, and the service was excellent. The lady who served our table was delightfully bubbly and cheerful! I would highly recommend coming to Cakes n Sweets for High Tea!

High tea set (disclaimer: This was a takeout high tea - we paired some homemade pastries with this and it is my own set up)

This place is a HIDDEN GEM for high tea and just pastries in general. Their high tea is great value and they give a 10% discount for take out orders as well. The pastries and savouries are delicious, and their scones are the biggest and tastiest I have had (and I have tried several more expensive ones in the greater Vancouver area). The menu rotates seasonally so every high tea will most likely rotate out some treats for new ones. I have been here in person multiple times and the service has been out of this world. I'd definitely recommend their raspberry honey tea, and their thumbprint jam cookies.

I enjoyed one of the more affordable high tea options in the Lower Mainland. At $21.95, you get a number of savoury and sweet delectables. Once you arrive, you get to choose from a small selection of teas and macaron flavours. The teapots could be better presented but it did the job. The cheese scones were huge and each person got two. I really appreciated that real Devonshire cream was served. The egg croissant and cucumber sandwiches were a classic hit. The desserts were nice although I found the macarons to be smaller than average. The mango mousse was my favourite. My suggestion for improvement is that they offered one cheese and one other scone flavour. Also, a nicer teapot would be great at improving the experience. Otherwise, it is worth a visit if you was a reasonably priced high tea experience. There are two tables that can seat four people and one table that can seat up to six people. The ambiance is not the fanciest as it is mainly a bakery. Lastly, there is plenty of plaza parking available.

My coworkers an I work in the area, and we didn't event realize this place was here for the longest time! To be honest we just thought it was a bakery, but they also serve high tea! So we made our reservations and had a blast today! One high tea serving ($21.95, which is reasonable) you get 2 scones, which were super moist and delicious, two small cucumber sandwiches, one quiche, one mini croissant sandwich, one macaroon, one chocolate dipped strawberry, one mini cupcake and a one chocolate ganache cup. Oh and of course a personal pot of tea! For the price, it was awesome! We can't wait to go back in a few months and check out the seasonal high tea menu then!

    Mocha cake

Ordered the cake a day in advance requesting that happy birthday is written on top. The buttercream was quite sweet and the cake was a little bit dry. The first slice was pretty good but we ended up scrapping off a lot of the buttercream to finish the cake. I would come back as the service was really good but I would not get the cake again.

While their pastries/cakes are on the pricier side, the quality was really good. The dark chocolate raspberry mousse ($8.25) was decadent and rich without being overly sweet and honestly their canele tasted pretty much like the one I had in France! The matcha latte here (~$5.50) also was better (less milky and had a stronger matcha flavour) than some other cafes in the area. Overall, a pretty solid cafe in the Coquitlam area though you might need to check ahead for pastry availability.

I also liked Mochi mochi bread which had very chewy texture like mochi, but this time, I felt the one I had in the past tasted better. However, Rich bread was very good. The dough is similar to brioche with very rich, buttery flavor. This one is definitely better than before. Overall, I really liked their products. The staff wasn't helpful at all. "They're all good." She also said the bread is Korean style bread that is popular in Korea. Then I asked why use the Japanese word for salt, i.e. "shio". She then responded that the bread is Japanese style. Like, which is it? Korean or Japanese? After consulting Gemini AI, the two styles are fundamentally the same but the texture is different. Regardless of Japanese or Korean style, I got the original and black (squid ink). I honestly don't see what the hype is. It's essentially just butter roll with salt sprinkled on top. Lol.

One suggestion I told the serving clerk to perhaps put a sign to separate freshly baked ( such) cookies from days old products. I went there on a Tuesday morning around 10 am and I bought a pack of shortbread cookies. I took it to the car and my husband tried one right away and found the supposedly crisp cookies were quite soft. He said these were not freshly baked. So I went right back to the bakery and told them what my husband said. The manager agreed to give me back the refund and the serving clerk told me the fresh cookies will be ready in late afternoon and the one I bought was baked over the weekend. I believe it is important for the bakery to separate the daily baked fresh products from the rest.

Unfortunately, its quite hard to find marzipan in the lower mainland. So you can imagine that I was quite excited when I saw they had one on the menu. At first glance the chocolate drizzle on top looked too little, but it was just the right amount. The all butter croissant was perfectly flaky. I heated mine up in the toaster oven for a few mins. The amount of filling that was inside amazed me. However, it would have been more enjoyable if it was more spread out, instead of a "log" of filling. Also, after warming up the pastry, the bottom was extremely oily. So oily that it was literally dripping. The meringue on the Lemon Meringue Bar was a bit deflated and dry. The lemon flavor wasn't overly powerful. The Mango Bar, mango flavor was very mild. I would have liked to taste something a bit more prominent. Also, I didnt like thay they added so much sugar to the Graham Cracker crust. The Spumoni Bar tasted mostly of coconut, but the bar was super flavorful and tasty. The Cheesy Bar cheesecake texture was nice and light. The Fruity Bar was very tasty. Although I wouldn't say that it tasted like strawberry. I liked the crunchy texture from the white chocolate covered rice krispies. I liked the Matcha it could have used a touch more matcha, but I know not everyone likes a super strong matcha flavor. My top picks would be SpumoniBar, Matcha, and Fruity Bar. However, I feel that all of the bars could use more flavor. Additionally, I would like to note the fantastic customer service that I received. I had a dog with me and she has major separation anxiety. One of the staff members noticed us and was kind enough to offer to watch the dog while I quickly ordered inside. I would rate the croissants 4.5 stars, the bars 3.8 stars and the customer service 5 stars.
