Our grandchildren love to come here for a treat and know how to handle a china cup and saucer very well. The buttermilk scones with cream and jam are their favourites and often go home with treats for later. They always look forward to the next occasion and we spend a leisurely time talking about their latest escapades. My mom and I came in to have some tea as I'd seen the Taste of the Tri-Cities scone/tea promo ($10 for choice of tea, 2 buttermilk scones, clotted cream and strawberry jam) on their Instagram. The service was super friendly, coming by to check in how the food was and refilling our tea. We shared one combo (there was a variety of tea to choose from and we opted for the Cherry Blossom Green tea which was light and floral) and also tried their feature cupcake of the month (Strawberry Matcha, while not very matcha-y, the strawberry buttercream was delightful). I loved the Royal Albert plates and teacups they used as well as the cozy interior with Parisian decor elements. In February I ordered a 40 person vanilla sheet cake for a surprise 70th birthday party with a motorcycle theme (I asked for an Indian motorcycle). It had chocolate buttercream filling (I think it was anyway) and possibly vanilla buttercream icing on the outside. Didn't taste like buttercream so I'm not sure. When I got the cake, the motorcycle was a photo on fondant, which is okay I guess, but then it had a huge "Indian Motorcycles" across the top. It looked like an advert for Indian motorcycles. So I had to take that off. The decoration was minimal and boring, but what really got me was the taste. Oh I'm sorry, WHAT taste? The cake was dry and so was the buttercream filling. I didn't realize it was possible to have dry icing. I was soooo disappointed. Plus I couldn't believe this cake cost me $235. Never again. read more

We are visiting from California and wanted something fun to do during our holiday stay with family - I found the holiday tea here and we really enjoyed it! The savory and sweets were all delicious, each one in our party chose their own tea and had their own pot, and the server was so sweet! My 8 year old is a finicky eater and they brought out a few extra shrimp for her which was perfect. Back in 2019 we went for High Tea at Cakes n Sweets in Coquitlam. All of us loved it back then and when we found ourselves wanting to go for High Tea again recently, we could think of no better place to go than to Cakes n Sweets. We were a party of five and two of us (our daughter and myself) had a Vegetarian High Tea while the other three had the regular High Tea. I was pleased to learn that they could offer a Vegetarian menu as there's no mention of it on their website.Over the years, High Tea has become extraordinarily expensive. When we went to Cakes n Sweets back in 2019, it was the only place where we could get High Tea for less then $30 per person. The price has gone up slightly from what it was previously. It's now $33 per person; however, that's still a lot less than what most other places charge. For High Tea, it's still the best deal I know of.  Most of us had tea; however, there was one person in our group who doesn't like tea and so she opted for hot chocolate instead. What a delight it was to see that they served the hot chocolate in a teapot just like the rest of us who were having tea. The food was superb, just as it was the last time we came; however, there was one item that had changed and that was the egg salad sandwich. When we came back in 2019, they served us egg salad sandwiches inside mini croissants. This time they used regular sandwich bread. Our daughter and I would have much preferred them to have used the mini croissants again. I'm giving them 4 stars instead of 5 since they now use regular sandwich bread instead of the mini croissants. Other than that, the food was wonderful. Parking is plentiful and free, and the service was excellent. The lady who served our table was delightfully bubbly and cheerful! The store itself is fairly small, but there seemed to be lots of people grabbing take-out or ordering to-go, so the place is good. My friends and I went here on Saturday for high tea. This was the first experience we've ever had at cakes n sweets. It's a really cute place. The staff are great as well and we really enjoyed the high tea. I also ended up going home with a carrot flavoured cupcake and the mini vanilla bean cheesecake. Omg they were so delicious! This place is a HIDDEN GEM for high tea and just pastries in general. Their high tea is great value and they give a 10% discount for take out orders as well. The pastries and savouries are delicious, and their scones are the biggest and tastiest I have had (and I have tried several more expensive ones in the greater Vancouver area). The menu rotates seasonally so every high tea will most likely rotate out some treats for new ones. I have been here in person multiple times and the service has been out of this world. I'd definitely recommend their raspberry honey tea, and their thumbprint jam cookies. read more

I ordered a customized birthday cake for my little one and it was not to my expectation. I was devastated, disappointed, and embarrassed with the birthday cake that my husband brought home the night before the birthday party. I had no choice but to serve my guests the sad looking birthday cake. The owner of the store did not explain to me what my child's birthday cake request entailed. She had poor communication skills. She just said, "well, we thought you understood as i had mentioned multiple times in our email conversation". Firstly there was no sincere apology for the misunderstanding, secondly, she should no assume anything. A better method to communicate would have been "so the cake would be....which means...would you like to go ahead and order". She basically blamed it on her customer, that it was the customer's mistake for not reading the e mail properly, not the customer service that you would expect from any sales personnel. Her tone of voice and volume increased as the phone conversation went along and I had to end the conversation promptly before she escalated. According to cakes n sweets, the customer is not always right, they do not support their customers and give clear description of the customized cake. read more

I enjoyed one of the more affordable high tea options in the Lower Mainland. At $21.95, you get a number of savoury and sweet delectables. Once you arrive, you get to choose from a small selection of teas and macaron flavours. The teapots could be better presented but it did the job. The cheese scones were huge and each person got two. I really appreciated that real Devonshire cream was served. The egg croissant and cucumber sandwiches were a classic hit. The desserts were nice although I found the macarons to be smaller than average. The mango mousse was my favourite. My suggestion for improvement is that they offered one cheese and one other scone flavour. Also, a nicer teapot would be great at improving the experience. Otherwise, it is worth a visit if you was a reasonably priced high tea experience. There are two tables that can seat four people and one table that can seat up to six people. The ambiance is not the fanciest as it is mainly a bakery. Lastly, there is plenty of plaza parking available. read more

We went today for my friends high tea birthday, and we glad such a great time! Our waitress was so sweet, and both our tea and food came out very quickly. All the food was delicious, my favourites being the scones and macaroons! The price is very reasonable for what you get for high tea. My coworkers an I work in the area, and we didn't event realize this place was here for the longest time! To be honest we just thought it was a bakery, but they also serve high tea! So we made our reservations and had a blast today! One high tea serving ($21.95, which is reasonable) you get 2 scones, which were super moist and delicious, two small cucumber sandwiches, one quiche, one mini croissant sandwich, one macaroon, one chocolate dipped strawberry, one mini cupcake and a one chocolate ganache cup. Love this little shop. I've had high tea at several other locations and the cost and the food portions and quality are far superior here in Coquitlam. Love the Devonshire cream for the scones and you can buy it and the scones to take home, if you are early enough, because they sell out quickly. Ordered the cake a day in advance requesting that happy birthday is written on top. The buttercream was quite sweet and the cake was a little bit dry. The first slice was pretty good but we ended up scrapping off a lot of the buttercream to finish the cake. We went to Cakes n Sweets for the afternoon tea. The location is small but cute. The service was excellent and our waiter and waitress were very attentive. The high tea itself was fairly simple but very tasty; it came with two of every savory for each person - scones, finger sandwiches, mini croissants and mini quiches. The sweets were fabulous - the red velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting was so delicious that I ended up buying two full size ones to take home. While there is nothing new or particularly creative in this afternoon tea serving, it was very good and I feel like it would be a safe bet for many palates. From adding vibrant flowers to pouting chocolate and adding cookies they have the perfect cake for whatever you're looking for. Not to mention cupcakes!!! And much more. The staff are so awesome to deal with and came up with excellent suggestions for decorating the cupcakes, our guests raved about them! I decided to go in to look at their various cake ideas and find out what they could do with the one cake I had in mind. The owner is very courteous and was very helpful with my idea. And let me tell you... The cake was PHENOMENAL! I can't wait for the next big birthday to come around to place my order! While there, I saw they had "High Tea" service during various times of the day and I thought this would be something fun for my 12 yr old daughter & I! We ended up extending this invite to other friends & their daughters, and made a girls day out of it a couple weeks later. This experience was also great! My niece got her wedding cake from this bakery last November and I was impressed with her multi-layered red velvet and taro cake with a beautiful ombre icing. So I decided to order our cake here for our Christmas Eve gathering. Cakes N Sweets is conveniently located close to home in a corner of a shopping strip on Barnet near Coquitlam Centre. When I ordered my cake a week before our party, I came in 1 hour before closing on a dark, cold and rainy afternoon. The guy behind the counter looked like he had a long day and wasn't very talkative - but he wasn't rude. I saw in their website that one of their signature cakes was an "ube"/taro cake and that's what I wanted to bring to our Filipino Christmas dinner. I ordered and paid for the medium sized cake without asking too many questions. (I normally ask tons of questions but I still had some Christmas shopping to do.) When I picked up my cake on a sunny, cool afternoon, the same fella was behind the counter and it seemed the sun lifted his spirits. He was offering a lot more info and was more animated. He told me how to properly store my cake before serving (just leave it on the counter so the butter won't seize up) and even wished me a Merry Christmas. My family was very happy with the cake when it was served and some even mentioned that it had that distinct Filipino taste to it (?) Unfortunately I wasn't a big fan of it as it had this uber sweet and slimy coconut (in Filipino, it's macapuno) in between the cake so I ate around it. (The coconut was not in the description on their website.) The actual cake was moist and had a mild taro flavour. The butter icing was smooth and creamy and not too sweet. Also, I wasn't fond of the cheap plastic "Merry Christmas" decoration on top of the cake. (I wasn't asked if the cake was for Christmas.) I think I'll give them another chance as I like supporting promising small business in my neighbourhood. They also have afternoon tea so I may just book a table one of these days. read more

We used CakesnSweets for my Engagement party at the end of July. Overall the cake appearance was beautiful however the quality of cake was extremely disappointing. The icing tasted like pure butter and when the cake was cut it crumbled everywhere. I was extremely discouraged to hear that when the Bridal party contacted the store regarding their cake, they had another disheartening experience. The only solution that was given was a $50 store credit, when in turn the cake was close to $200. I would not recommend CakesnSweets for any Wedding or Bridal needs. read more

I love the food at cakes n sweets! I was in the store when the above woman was "complaining" about her "High Tea" for 1 (yes, for 1) to go! First of all, she was so rude to the staff. I felt that the young woman behind the counter handled her self very professionally. The "customer" kept demanding that Cakes n Sweets were misleading in their advertising. She kept insisting that she should have gotten what was on the "picture". The picture was that of a high tea presentation for 4 people, in the store! And then stated that she got better value at H Mart. I suggest she should go back to H Mart for their high tea selection of treats lady, keep Cakes n Sweets for the people that enjoy wonderful high quality food! I ordered high tea to take out. Not only their ad on the website and store are very misleading, but the front desk occasion young woman was very rude and the owner only cared about money. The size of the sandwiches were not like what the pictures showed, only finger size. I didn't even get the dessert that were posted on the website. I opened the box without touching anything, and I wasn't happy about what I paid for, so I wanted a refund, but was refused. The owner and the front desk woman both argued with me for about half hour. Not only they didn't care about their customer's satisfaction, but also the front desk young woman insulted me with my comprehension ability of ad and me tricking her touching the food that I wanted to return. She also said every picture on the ad is bigger than what you get. I won't get a big A &W burger as what was posted. I knew I coudn't get my money back. Then I told them that I didn't get the dessert that was included. The owner said to give two macroons. While I was deciding what flavour I wanted, the young woman said it doesn't matter, and handed two macaroons to the owner on a piece of napkin. I asked her if that's how they sell their macron, she said yes. After I got home, I open the box, the food are all smashed, and I even found piece of hair on their sandwich. The whole experience grossed me out. It was a nightmare. I am feeling sick about how they treated me, and their food. read more
