The desserts were perfect! Wedding cake was the perfect color to match our scheme and the taste......breath taking !

We ordered 26 custom cupcakes choosing 2 of almost every flavor. The order process was user friendly and kept me updated every step of the way. My husband and I chose Cake Works to make our wedding cake, and don't regret it in any way, shape, or form. The taste testing was pretty easy, though they didn't have all of the flavors that we were told we'd be able to sample. We tried a few that we weren't planning on trying, and wound up finding a winner that we didn't expect! We loved both the lilikoi and the pistachio, but went with lilikoi in the end. We had a super small gathering and the cake size that they recommended worked out well and was well within budget. We went with a semi-naked cake, decorated with ti leaf ish leaves and a few orchids, as well as a cake topper that I found elsewhere. The cake wasn't ready for pickup when we got there, but was ready very soon after. Everything looked perfect, and tasted wonderful. Overall a very good experience. read more

I hadn't been back to the location since it was a family owned business that I used to frequent and had closed. Imagine my surprise that it was open again for business and that it was another bakery! I had driven past it a couple of times and there were no parking spaces at those times, but put it in the back of my mind to come back. In going through the internet, I was pleasantly surprised that Cake Works was the name of the bakery and that it was indeed the same one that had opened at the old location. I found an array of goodies that they offered. I ordered their Queen Emma cake. It was delectable and beautifully executed. I ended up gifting it to a friend who I knew her family would really enjoy it. I had also purchased two of their Christmas yule logs - Pistachio and Chocolate Raspberry (one I had gifted to a girl friend). Their cup cakes are "to die for" and make great gifts. I also purchased and assortment of cookies and pastries. I don't know how the employees keep their figures with all those goodies around. They are helpful, courteous and give great customer service. I will be back, again. read more

Cake works was the best decision I ever made! The red velvet cupcakes are the best, they are fast and reasonably priced and have amazing customer service! I love cupcakes. I stopped and got some cupcakes. They didn't have any with butter cream frosting. I got the lilikoi and it was a good cupcake. The chocolate cupcake with chocolate fudge icing was too bitter. The top of the red velvet cupcake was crunchy and not soft. All in all the cupcakes were just ok and not soft and fresh. The frostings could use some updates. The cupcakes were very pretty. It's nice to have a bakery on the island with fresh baked goods. read more

Once again CAKE WORKS, does it up again!!! From our wedding to our daughters 1st birthday. And again, the guest loved it! My mother wishes they can ship to New York City. Sadly we're leaving in a month but I'll always recommend CAKE WORKS to anyone in Hawaii or visiting. Thank you again Kristen, you're the BEST!! I ordered the butter cake with strawberry guava filling, Minnie Mouse decorations and an edible image of the birthday girl. it was a hit! Everyone loves it! Didn't even want to cut the cut. It was a last minute order but CAKE WORKS pulled it through, just how I know they would. I didn't get the gentleman name that answered the phone and I forgot to ask when we picked up the cake but he's very professional and helpful. And if they're are any single ladies reading this post...stop by and order something to see him (if he's single that is) God bless and thank you so much Kristen and staff. read more

This is the first time I've ever encountered this place. We originally called over the phone for quotes and location. The girl who answered the phone was super nice and helpful. We discovered right away that they were a bit on the pricey side. We've never ordered custom cakes like this before so I'm really not sure what the going rates are. We don't mind paying for quality tho. When we did go in, the girl at the desk didn't seem to know too much of everything but she never left any question unanswered and seemed help where needed. She was really nice and friendly also. I was a bit disappointed at first because price didn't allow everything we wanted to do. The cake was ready for pick up when we arrived. The lady was super cheerful and friendly. Made sure I inspected it before I left. It was bigger than I anticipated and was the cutest thing I've seen. Exactly what we wanted. It did sit at room temp a few hours thru the party but it held up. It didn't melt or start slipping like others I've seen. Although I didn't get to taste it, those who did said it was absolutely great. We got the strawberry guava flavor. They did a great job, quality cake, and everyone was super friendly! Will definitely do business with them again! read more

Watermelon is my favorite summer fruit, so this year my husband bought me a watermelon cake from Cake Works. It was beautiful! It was so perfectly decorated, my friend stuck her finger on it thinking it was ceramic. Not a huge fan of fondant, however, the inside was watermelon color cake with chocolate chips in the shape of watermelon seeds. That detail was awesome and delicious! I went throw Cake Works to do my Wedding Cake. I carefully read all reviews and made a consultation with Abby the owner. The person I spoke with on the phone told me it was $20 for the consultation. I had a idea with what I had in mind. And my Husband and I met with Abby. There were very nice. And told me I can always change my mind until the lock out date (two weeks before event). I put in my order before I left and paid the $20 for the consultation as well as paid for half of the cost of the cake. I picked up a brochure in front the cash register. When I went home I Read the brochure and it said " consultation $20 only if NO ORDER AS BEEN PLACED. So basically they ripped me off. I looked on my receipt and they didn't credit me the money. I was willing to look pass it. I didn't want ant bad vibes from any of my wedding venues. Later my husband called to make a appointment of change a few things on our cake as well as making it Bigger and pay it off. We went in and waited for someone to finish up on another consultation. We were meet by Rachel and she helped us At the end of everything I asked for my Receipt and Rachel said NO. She wants to email it to me. I wanted to have everything on paper before I left while everything is still fresh in our minds. But Rachel NO CUSTORMER SEVICE. On the day of my wedding I seen my wedding cake it was beautiful But some things were left out that I would have caught only if I got a receipt. The day after the wedding I called to speak to Rachel just to inform her. All I wanted was Sorry. I left my number with some other person. Rachel calls me back and yells at me as I was answering her phone call. telling me I should have make a appointment cause this wouldn't have happened. I told her I did. she then go more mad and told me when I did make a appointment I was rude. I told her my husband make the appointment. I also told her she must be confusing me with someone else. Or lying! For over 15 minutes she yelled at me and kept putting me down. I was begging her to stop yelling at me and just listen to me. she did not want to give me a chance to talk. I Asked to speak to Abby she kept telling me she was in a meeting. I asked her if I can leave my phone number with her so Abby can call me back. when I hung up the phone I was in tears. crying to my mom and husband. They were listening the whole time in disbelieve. Abby called back later but I didn't want to go throw another 15 minutes being yelled at. so I didn't even listen to the voice mail. The hurtful part is I picked this cake venue to come back every year for a duplicate wedding cake for our anniversary. A Tradition my husband and I wants to do. Now were taking our business some were professional. I told all my engaged friends about this and they will never consider Cake Works. My sister also came to Cake Works for all the desserts for my surprise Bridal Shower. Uh, got my birthday cake here. 1) asked for a specific spelling of jesse (JE55E) it was written down but came out on the cake as just the plain ol' regular 'Jesse' 2) When ordering the devils food chocolate cake they asked if I wanted fudge between the layers, or butter cream. I said fudge. She wrote down fudge. I got buttercream. 3) They bake their cakes and freeze them, and then assemble later when orders are placed. I was assured though that they were never older then 2 days. I would prefer a freshly baked cake all- around because: 4) It didn't taste that good. Don't even feel like finishing it. read more

I gotta gripe about the business/customer service side of Cakeworks that's what the star is for. We had ordered and paid for our cake & caketopper two months before our wedding and were called two weeks before our wedding with a demand for payment. We had paid and was willing to bring in receipts (of which we did at a later date as we received no follow up from Cakeworks after being promised a call-back confirming payment). We had to call Cakeworks many times for follow up and we were even hung up on after someone forgot about us! Two weeks of this madness was too much. Then we were told they didn't order the caketopper (of which we had ordered and paid for two months before the wedding) until one week before the wedding. Cakeworks did take care of us in the end. The cake was yummy, the caketopper came in the DAY BEFORE and Cakeworks willingly and graciously painted the hair and even a goatee for us. But really, the stress, the frustration all of that could have been saved if they'd done simple bookkeeping and follow up. I mean it's just a caketopper but what's aggravating is that a wedding professional (in this case a bakery that touts custom cakes for weddings) gave us so much problems with their own bookkeeping and customer service. I am glad we kept our receipts in the end and did follow up on our own. read more

After 6 days of being sick and completely out of commission, I wanted a cupcake as my come back to life type of reward. I was tired of having soup and tasting all the metallic chemicals in my mouth from my many mixtures of prescriptions. I decided one morning that I would take a walk towards my usual nearby cupcake place. I don't know if the stars and the universe were not aligned that day but I've experienced horrible service from that place. So I took my business elsewhere. Throughout the day, I've had to run many errands and catch up from the week and decided I would make a cupcake run afterwards. Let me tell you, when you're searching for cupcakes towards the end of the day, the journey isn't so fun. Especially on a Saturday evening. It was starting to get late and I've noticed that I've scouted just about a lot of the areas. It's either they're sold out for the day and are near closing time. I've made visits to random bakeries I didn't know existed before but either didn't specialize in cupcakes or just didn't carry them. I didn't want to settle for grocery store cupcakes. At this point, all I had in my mind were. "I WANT MY CUPCAKE!!" Thanks to Yelp, we found Cake Works! Cake Works is located on the corner of S. King St., across from the Hawaiian Humane Society. At this point, it has become a mission and I refused to go home with at least one cupcake. I had made a phone call to inquire about cupcakes. I didn't want to waste a trip if they didn't have any at all. Thankfully, the lady that answered the phone at the bakery had stated "Yes, we have cupcakes!". Thankfully I was headed in that direction. The bakery is not very big but very welcoming. Their brick and mortar had a cottage feeling and it was quite lovely. The shop specializes in wedding/custom/special occassion cakes, breakfast pastries, gift items, french Macarons and of course cupcakes. Even though the shop is small, there are plenty of outdoor seatings with a couple of seats inside to enjoy. Since they're near closing at the time of my arrival, my selection was very limited. Thankfully, they had the peanut butter chocolate (full size and not mini) cupcake and red velvet with cream cheese icing cupcakes for $3. In addition with my Yelp check-in, I scored on a free Creamsicle french macaron with my purchase. My one disappointment was when I took my first bite of my two cupcakes, it was a little hard. I am thinking perhaps because it's towards the end of the day and I got a bad batch? I will have to come back again another day to try more of their desserts in the morning or mid day. Otherwise, customer service was good and I will come back again to try more of their other desserts. Parking is limited on their property. Street parking is a walk. read more

I'm disappointed in cake works:( My sister in law has a baby shower tomorrow morning and picked up her cake today and I was in shock looking at it. This is not something you'd expect with the price you pay. They texted me tonight asking me to please fix it. Fixing the verbiage isn't a hard task but if you don't have identical colors of the frosting it could mess up the whole vibe of the cake. I just can't believe they released the cake to be purchased this way. I would never let out a product that was any less than my best. My Aunty shouldn't have been charged full price for that cake. read more

Went in today for a wedding cake tasting and quite disappointed. For $20 you get 5 mini cupcakes and a slice of cake. They say you can bring people people with you but they only give you one bottle water and no cups. Really?? I've been to a different cake tasting and at least they give you mini bottle water. The lady who helped us was more concerned with our budget than anything else. First off, it isn't like we know everything about cakes. It would be helpful if they would explain some things. You shouldn't even have a hint of sarcasm if the customer doesn't understand building of the cake and pricing. I could understand if the customer was being mean or sassy but that wasn't the case with us. Are you just happy enough to make the $20 for the cake tasting? It doesn't seem as if you want to make the sale. I just couldn't help but think about how much business they must lose because of this. I thought it was a bit disorganized. We were there early and they sent us outside with a book to look over til the lady came out at 1. No reference really for us to look at as she explained. Why? Because she didn't really explain much. She had a paper but it seemed it to be mostly for her reference. It would have been nice to have a display of some sort but your consult is done outside. No general idea of price. Her attitude was more like how many people you want to serve and what's your range. If there was a chart/picture an inexperienced customer could choose a look as well as a price point that they are comfortable with. It would solve everyone's problems. Yes, we didn't have a budget set but we also not trying to go overboard nor are we trying to be super cheap. Your approach should be the experience of the wedding. Do you want it really fancy or pretty simple? Instead of focusing on a price limit. If you show us something and we love it, maybe you could sell it regardless of the price. If you state a price of 1k and the customer doesn't like it. Must you say with sarcasm, well then you do have a price range? After everything was done and it only took 20 mins, we had to pay for cake tasting. She disappeared and we were left to stand and wait for one cashier to help a bunch of people who are placing orders. Remember I told you we had to chose the cake samples from the mini cupcakes? She said we had to chose from what was out. There was about 6 cupcakes that were out, so we had to chose from the flavors that were left. What good is that? If it's out doesn't that mean they are the most popular and should be sampled? Here is the kicker, as we wait to pay we hear the cashier tell the customer that she had the flavors that were empty and she went in the fridge and grabbed it for them!!!! Yes! The very same one that told us we could only choose from what they had!!!! I would of gave only one star but i liked one of the flavors. read more

Cake Works was at the last Eat the Street, and they were selling macarons for $2 each. I bought a couple of macarons to try, but I wish I hadn't. I bit into the strawberry guava macaron and is was HARD AND CRUNCHY, like packaged Chips Ahoy cookies. All of the filling oozed out of the sides when I tried to bite into it so I ended up breaking off a piece with my fingers, and it was unimpressive and totally underwhelming. The haupia macaron was a little better, but it was far from being soft and velvety as macarons should be. They were so meh that my bf and I only took a couple of small bites of each and ended up tossing the rest. Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed and I wish I hadn't wasted $4 on Cake Work's crappy macarons. It's a shame because their cakes are pretty good. I've learned my lesson and I'm sticking with La Tour for my future macaron needs. I wouldn't purchase Cake Works' macarons again, but I wouldn't be a sad panda if I received them as a gift. read more

Free macaron with Yelp check-in! (Review based on macarons only) This really helped offset the cost of the lackluster macarons priced at $2 each (a little expensive in my opinion, as the most places on Oahu who sell macarons price theirs at under $2). The macaron cookie itself was very, almost too, chewy. The filling was also a little runny in consistency and easily got all over the place. Of the three flavors I tried, the espresso flavor was pretty prominent, but the red velvet and pistacio flavors were very slight. I know some people like this, but I prefer being able to at least somewhat taste the flavors that I choose. Call me picky with macarons. Located at that weird King St./Waialae Ave intersection near Market City, it was a little inconvenient to get to and park at. They do have a few stalls fronting their store, but if you're lucky there's also street parking on King St. Needless to say, I probably won't revisit. read more

I used Cake Works for my daughters 1st Birthday cake. I must say they were really easy to work with I literally emailed them a picture of what I was looking for and the date and time I'll pick it up and it was that simple. The reason I gave 3 stars is because although the cake was beautiful as soon as I opened the box I noticed all the fondant was bubbling and coming off the cake. It ended up looking like a sad droopy cake on the sides by the time the party started. I'm not too sure why it happened because we were at D&B and it was a air conditioned room so it was nice and cool no heat or humidity. This was a couple years ago so perhaps they got their fondant issues up to or now. read more

I had experiences 2 separate times and both were SUCH a disappointment. 1st time- ordered a cake for grandparents 50th anniversary. We ordered a small two tier round fondant cake with edible pearl like balls and wanted it to say happy anniversary on it. Once it was delivered it was plain and didn't even say happy anniversary on it! Wtf?!?! Contacted customer service which was absolutely horrible and useless and all that was given to compensate was a $50 gc. The cake was over $200. BS. 2nd time- got macaroons and the girl helping us touched everything with her DIRTY BARE HANDS. Again wtf?!?! All in all if I could give negative stars I would. For her recent nuptials, my friend decided she wanted her wedding cake from Cake Works. Since her reception was a small, private affair, the cake was quite small and was a simple concoction of traditional white cake with buttercream frosting. Very straightforward. The lady we worked with was very nice and easy to do business with. Our first impression of the cake was the price seemed incredibly high given the small size and simplicity. Next, we noticed that the fondant work (a basic ribbon around the sides and top) was sloppy. Definitely NOT up to par! The only other decoration was some silver dragees (small balls) placed evenly across the icing. Very basic. Honestly, it didn't look like a wedding cake! Thankfully, the cake itself tasted good. The cake was light and had good flavor, and the icing was good; not too sweet as is often the case with buttercream frosting. Everyone was happy with the flavor, at least! Taste = 4 stars, appearance/artistry = 2 stars, customer service = 4 stars, value for price = 2 stars. Cake Works is located on King St. at Wai'alae Ave. directly across from the Humane Society. We bought a lemon berry marscapone cake there to bring to our friend's house for dessert. It was friggin delicious - moist, not too sweet, nice fruit. We all wolfed it down, there was none left. I felt bad like I shoulda bought the big one. The little one was like 15-16 bucks. Great price. The whole foods cakes and tarts are more expensive, less tasty and not from locally owned small business. The only gripe I have about this place is how the heck to you drive to it. We turned left off of King, cut through 2 lanes of oncoming traffic, were terrified that we'd get killed. I'm sweating right now cuz I gotta buy dessert before I got to our friend's house for dinner and I don't know how I'ma get there without causing a car accident. read more

This review is for the experience of ordering a custom-made cake. I haven't yet tried the baked items they sell in-store, but I hope to one day soon! Cake request: I submitted a form online through the Cake Works website. The form is really easy to fill out because it asks logistical questions (i.e. estimated guest count, type of event, etc.) as well as a brief description of the design (i.e. 2D vs 3D, square/round, characters, colors, etc.) you have in mind. The form also asks for an estimated budget, which was the hardest question for me because the was the first custom cake I'd ever ordered. I suppose you have to be somewhat prepared before you complete the form. Knowing what design or theme you're looking for goes a long way. Getting a quote: The website says it will be at least 72 hours until Cake Works can give you a quote, but Leilani responded to my inquiry within a day, and I had a quote in 2 days. She was very helpful in providing more information about flavors, design ideas, color schemes and, finally, an estimated cost for what I wanted. I'm not the most visionary cake designer, so having an experienced artist help bring it all together was such a relief! Correspondences were over email so I was very happy that it wasn't a drawn-out process. Payment: The final cost was under $100 for a round, decorated birthday cake for 8 people. Leilani sent me the Cake Contract and credit card authorization forms, I filled them out and sent them back via email. The whole process was quick and easy. I coordinated a pick up time, and Leilani helped give me tips on how best to keep the cake fresh till the party. The Cake: I was sooo impressed by the cake when I picked it up! As I mentioned earlier, the cake was round (not 3D or 2D molded or anything super fancy). It was a nice off-white cream color with a cute gray border, "Happy Birthday" written in pink icing and a fondant cut-out of Pusheen (that animated cat character) eating ramen. Size-wise, I thought it was very generously portioned for 8 people. Based on the portions that people actually ate after dinner, the cake could've served 12-16 people, so there was a lot to take home. Taste-wise, lilikoi was a good choice and I'm glad Cake Works has a variety of flavors vs just boring vanilla or chocolate. Overall, I would recommend Cake Works if you're looking to order a custom cake for a special occasion. They're really helpful at every step of the process, their location is convenient for anyone living in town and they will produce a cake that is beautiful and tasty! read more

Gosh, I'm sad to say that I've been here a lot and each time I sort of expect not so great service or array of cakes, cupcakes and macaroons to choose from. Why do I continue to go here? Well, I only go here if my other go to places are closed- say, like a Sunday. I know, terrible. But I'm just being honest.... It all started when we ordered a first birthday cake for our daughter's first birthday. We asked for a Disney theme with Mickey and Minnie and what we got was a whole bunch of marshmallow characters that looked like a messy slew of characters. We were shocked and I still remember the staffs response-"it's the best we did". Wow. I've bought the strawberry cream cake which is pretty good and the macaroons- it's ok. I like the salted caramel macaroons. I also bought the dark chocolate cake and surprisingly didn't taste like genuine dark chocolate. The frosting tasted a little odd- the cake itself was fairly ordinary. I actually told my husband that I preferred a zippys dobash compared to that. Some final thoughts- I really believe that in any industry, service is key. Sadly I must say that I haven't experienced excellent service here. Seems like the staff aren't happy there and your bothering them. I'm sure I'm wrong- it's just the feeling I get. Really hoping they will improve in many areas. read more

I'm not sure if it works? I finally got to taste some of their macaroons at Eat the Streets! However, I was fairly disappointed because most of the macaroons were dry, hard, & flaky. I ordered about 8 macaroons for $15 which included mango, red velvet, chocolate, lilikoi, and ube flavors. Fairly disappointing for $2/piece. A few were delicious and had just the right texture and taste, but only a FEW so I don't think I would ever purchase macaroons here again because of the inconsistency. However, I have not tried their cakes or cupcakes, so if it works out then I will definitely do an update on this review. read more
