DO NOT Patron this establishment. This afternoon I witnessed a manager or someone of authority berating a woman with young children and a service dog. Said they would not serve them. I find this unacceptable and cannot believe someone would be denied service because of having a service dog. The woman should be given the same treatment as anyone without disabilities. I beg you not to give money to the Cloverdale Avenue Resturant. ADA should go in and educate the staff and management. read more

Difficult to gauge the ambiance but the restaurant was very clean but does show some wear as it was EXTREMELY busy. We were still seated immediately. Our waitress was very prompt with great timing and customer service. This was the BEST eggs Benedict I've ever had bc they were not stingy with the Hollandaise. Is it just me, or is Winston just loaded with great, local diners with excellent breakfast and lunch fare, broad menu choices, reasonable pricing, & friendly, efficient service? This one is right in there with The Lighthouse, Rancho, Olde Orchard Diner, Cloverdale, and a hand full more - perhaps even at the top of that list. This one is a little more ambitious perhaps, since it is one of a 4 location mini-chain - with other restaurants in Midway, Lexington, and Kernersville. The basic menus are the same, with some differences due to the location's layoff and facilities - for example the Kernersville location offers pizza. All locations serve breakfast all day long, with specials limited after 11AM. They offer a few appetizers, soups and salads (with combos), sandwiches (including a great Fried Flounder Sub), burgers, and subs, a variety of pasta entrees, Fried & Broiled Seafood, a couple of nice Greek choices, a large number of menu entrees (steaks, chops, chicken, liver, etc), Daily Specials, and around 20 or so side dishes. There are a few beers available, and several inexpensive wine choices. The Country Fried Steak ($8.25) is simply outstanding - a decent cut of breaded beef with a nice taste. The White Gravy would allow you to eat wallboard if it were liberally applied. The Pintos and Fried Okra are good, not great - rather underseasoned in both cases. The cornbread was just not good - dry and leathery on the outside, rather tasteless inside. The Friday Flounder Special ($7.95) was also exceptional, in flavor and in size. You get 2 very large pieces of filet, perfectly fried - this fish is nearly as good as that at Walkertown Seafood Shack, and that's saying something. The FF are the breaded kind, and were delicious; the Hush Puppies were good as well - nice little taste of onion, not too much; and the slaw was also good, with a little carrot in it. The service is excellent, and this is a busy place - there is a swarm of nice wait ladies in colorful Cagney's T-shirts making it work well - the kitchen is fast, wait time is very reasonable. Because it is busy, it can get a little loud. My only complaint is that this location offers no hot dog - seems almost un-American. We'll be back - either here, or one of the other locations. read more

Lasagna-gate 2024...until addressed we'll never come back here. This is a vast change from the previous owner who was very nice, engaging, & professional (May 2022). I hate he left...our experience follows. So I had to share this experience and my recommendation to NOT patronize this Cagneys Kitchen off Cloverdale Ave location. Please comment, especially on their SM pages, and share, share, share! We have never had an issue here, but things have clearly changed since the owner left and returned to Boston. Long story short, 2 of us ordered, Lasagna. Now mind you, they have Baked Spaghetti too. I'm not sure if the server misheard the order. I ordered "Lasagna" 1st (the word baked was used) and another person in our party ordered lasagna but said "baked lasagna" and we went on about our business. We finally get our food and I'm looking...like what is this because it's not what I ordered. We alert the server to take it back for the lasagna we ordered. It takes a minute and then we hear another server saying something about making changes and not getting in trouble. Why did the other server had to tell us and not the original server, idk. She proceeds to tell us that the "cook" said they if we reordered, we'd have ro pay for both dishes. We refused and had them remove the 2 erroneous dishes. So we pretty much didn't eat. The "cook" or manager didn't even come out to address us. I didn't want ANYTHING from that kitchen after that anyway. So I implore you all to NOT spend your hard earned money at a place that will not respect or appreciate it's customers. read more

Stopped into Cagney's on a Sunday hoping to beat the church crowd but found the place packed instead. I only had to wait a few minutes for a small booth but I know it took others much longer to be seated. My server was busy. I never felt unattended too but did think some things took a couple of minutes longer than they should have necessarily. I got a bacon, cheese, and sausage omelet with shredded hashbrowns and a biscuit. The omelet was a good size and had plenty of filling. Hashbrowns were nice and crispy but unseasoned. The biscuit was just ok. I had heard folks rave about their biscuits but didn't find it to be out of this world. Overall, it's a good spot with all of your breakfast favorites. I just wasn't wowed by anything. Cagney's will definitely be in my breakfast rotation and I'm curious to try their lunch/dinner menu. read more

Heard good things from friends so we had to try it. Three of us went but I'm only reviewing my dish. I'll let others do their own Yelping. We arrived for a late breakfast at 930 and it was slammed. Fortunately a guy was pulling out and I was about to get a parking spot. The inside is well-lit, clean and neat. Was told to sit where I wanted. Sever was friendly and efficient. Prices are reasonable across the board. They have daily breakfast specials so make sure you check them out before you order. THEY HAVE CORNED BEEF HASH. I make a special mention because you don't find that at many breakfast places. I ordered the corned beef hash omelette with gravy and a biscuit. I could have ordered grits or hash browns but I wanted gravy. Ticket time was reasonable. Our server was attentive to refilling drinks and checking on our table. The omelette was one of the best I've ever had. The eggs were perfectly cooked, tender and not dried out. The hash was plentiful and delicious. The biscuits appear to be homemade and were also wonderful. Three breakfasts came to $24 plus tip. Well worth the price for plenty of delicious food. They have three locations but I can only speak to the one on Cloverdale. We will definitely be back. read more

I love big fat breakfasts and this has been a good spot for me. Although they have special deals often I have to have their fried pork tenderloin with eggs biscuit and gravy. This will definitely stick with you for a long day. With coffee and tax this runs slightly over 8 bucks. To be clear the biscuits I've had were fantastic. My visits have only been during peak breakfast hours and I can't say that later shifts are equal. I've had nothing but excellent prompt service. If you need to get out quick I'm sure you can, but I tend to enjoy lingering and enjoying my full-fat high-sugar treats. This is very close to Winston Salem's huge Baptist Hospital and is a super place to indulge while waiting for friends and family to be attended there, or take them along once released and able :-) read more

How do I love my eggs? Let me count the ways... I came here already experiencing Cagney's near 150 and it was completely different. No problem. Let's get some breakfast at 11:30 on a Saturday like a normal person. I ordered two eggs, scrambled with sausage and gravy. I expected the sausage and gravy to be the star of the meal but how wrong I was when I took my first bite of scrambled eggs. They use butter and it's a good thing. Those eggs are so damn good I asked for it to go box. Now, I know this is a very limited review on just eggs, but, the rest of the menu looked like some good ol Country cooking and that makes my heart swell because, well, we're in the south and diners are best. read more

We have been coming here for years, but really worked it into our routine as of late. Reasons behind this include consistently good grits (well seasoned, not too watery), the option of both chunky AND shredded hashbrowns (ordered extra crispy of course), and the availability of spinach as a breakfast side (it is surprisingly hard to incorporate veggies into southern breakfasts). Don't be expecting anything too fancy here. The menu is simple, straightforward and inexpensive. I have never gone here for lunch or dinner and probably never will. They do solid, diner-style breakfasts and know how to cook the heck out of an egg. They handle my somewhat finicky order (sunny side up, white done completely, slightly crispy on the bottom, yolk runny), flawlessly, every time. Also a big fan of their salsa, which is actually super tasty on eggs. The service is friendly, but can be slow at times. No they don't have the perks of stoneground grits, avocado or veggie sausage (all of which are personal breakfast favs), but they do serve very consistent, tasty food, which will have us coming back! read more

Wow the pancakes were so big. Our server suggested to get Blueberry's on inside and not on top. There were so many it was great. I liked that they give you a choice on the hash browns. this afternoon I was refused service due to my medical alert service dog. when I first came in I was seated and my service dog went under the table and against the wall. shortly after I was told to leave and when questioned why I was told the management refused service to those with animals. I took my children outside with a family friend to watch them and went back in to ask for more information as they have a sign posted on the door that service animals are allowed and my service animal was wearing a vest clearly marked service animal. at this point I was lead outside by the management and yelled at while being humiliated for asking clarification as to why I was refused service despite the law requiring equal service and the sign stating I was allowed service on the door. this establishment discriminates, humiliates, and belittles customers without a care. other locations are accommodating and accepting, however this location shouldn't be under current management. the insults, language, tone, and actions of the management were not professional but rather hateful and spiteful. I would recommend no longer supporting this location due to how openly they discriminate disabled patrons despite being across from the hospital as well as how little care is put in to make sure this is a safe environment for families. read more

This was close to our hotel I checked Yelp and it had good ratings. Pictures of menu intrigued me because the prices were so good. They are open early. Even short staffed we were given coffee and water promptly and our order taken. We had the special 2eggs 4 bacon (your way, they ask) toast or biscuit and grits (in a bowl or on the plate they ask) all for $4.25. I don't know where else you can get this good a breakfast for this price. In Portland Oregon one plate would be $11. We'll be back tomorrow morning. The ladies were nice and there must be two because the owner called and said someone ordered a to go at the wrong one. They were nice about it. read more

Unfortunately, I was not a big fan. We went on a Sunday morning which I realize is probably one of their busiest days but it took over an hour to get breakfast and the service was pretty sporadic as well. I ordered eggs over medium and when they got to the table the egg yolk was already broken. To me you shouldn't serve someone an over medium egg when you accidentally broke the yoke before it got to the table. My boyfriend ordered the chicken parm sandwich and he enjoyed it, but he isn't too picky. I also noticed other tables trying to flag down the waitress without much luck. I think they were just overwhelmed, another waitress on staff that morning probably would have helped them out a lot. They are one of the few places I have found in the area who serve corn beef hash and even though it was out of a can they still get points for that in my book. read more

Another decent NC dive. Good service with a diverse menu. The food is good and reasonably priced. Nothing was great but good. The chicken fried steak is okay. The sides were decent. I got the prime rib special, which was about what you would expect from a dive joint. Just okay but priced right at $12. So if you are in the Ardmore area, close to Cloverdale, and need a decently priced dive for breakfast, lunch or dinner, then I can recommend. I wouldn't drive out of your way though. read more

As long as you are not expecting a mind blowing experience and not looking for this place to be featured on Dive, Diners and Drive-in's you will be just fine with a few suggestions and warnings. I have been here on several occasions and typically selected the club sandwich and a side. I wish I had stuck to my routine because the club is fantastic. Today however, I went with their Monday special, the Chicken Pot Pie. Their specials do come with 2 sides and I selected the the fries and cucumber salad. The not so good started and ended with the chicken pot pie. It was served like warm and oddly enough it was yellow. Yes.....yellow. Similar shade of yellow as a lemon meringue pie. I don't dare to begin to guess why it was yellow, it just was. No mistaking it.....yellow. It also lacked flavor and much chicken although what chicken I did have was very tender. The sides were good and fresh and no odd color noted. The service was great and friendly and the waitress kept the water and coffee full. The place is a VERY popular spot and tends to be crowded. The prices are fare and service is quick. It is a typical diner atmosphere, friendly staff and good food although I just can't recommend the chicken pot pie. read more

I was told that I would be charged for the meatloaf meal in addition to whatever I changed the meatloaf for. The meatloaf had no flavor and burnt on one side. Cagney's did not do it for me. I stopped in for breakfast after staying with my mom in the hospital since it was basically across the street. I was tired of eating the sub-par, super expensive hospital food and their breakfast plates were really good prices. We ordered 2 Pancakes, A Smoked Sausage Plate, A Country Ham plate and a side of Bacon. The breakfast meats and grits were really good. But I have 3 complaints with the last being the reason I will never return... 1. The pancakes were very thick and heavy. I prefer my pancakes light & fluffy.Maybe just a little bit more liquid would have helped these pancakes, as they tasted decent. 2. The eggs were processed eggs. Ot atleast they tasted/looked like it. I ordered egg whites and my mom ordered regular eggs. When we picked them up to trash them they were very thick and heavy. They looked like 2 big pieces of meat. 3. I watched the cashier, with my own eyes, take cash from paying customers, then go to the kitchen area and with her BARE hands grab my bread, butter and toast it and wrap it in foil. Yes that's right, there was no washing of the hands and no gloves involved. Next time i'll drive a little further to find another breakfast spot. It's unfortunate though. Cagneys is one of our go-to diners. The food is consistent, fairly priced, and there is something for everyone. This is not a high end restaurant, but if you want southern home cooked food, you can't go wrong. They also have breakfast all day which is good. My youngest loves their spaghetti, oldest loves the manicotti, I love the salads and veggies, beef strips are good too, and hubby changes up what he gets. Overall, everything we have gotten has been yummy. But you need to come with the expectation that this is more diner food, not a high end restaurant. read more

Great brealast as usual. Always a short wait for a seat. A most economical quality meal anytime of day. We ordered a two egg breakfast special with link sausage and an extra side of grits and also the Mediterranean omelet with shredded hash browns. Oh my the spinach, gyro meat, onions and feta cheese was delicious! The omelet was cooked just right. The waffle was perfect, crunchy on the outside and fluffy inside. The coffee was fresh and hot. Breakfast all day, need not say anything else.. Had Corned Beef hash, eggs over easy ( perfectly cooked ) Grits ( nice and creamy ) and a beautiful homemade biscuit. Wash that down with a Beck's beer ( hey , it was well past noon.. ) and the meal was complete! Like to see a better variety of brews, there is a beer revolution going on these days guys, get on that train. Other than that no criticism, not regrets.. Simple fare , for simple folk..
