Café latte

I normally end up there on a busy Saturday lunch time and luckily always got a table. It's pretty full so and people are queuing to get in. The staff is very friendly. It's a small place, but the interior well organised. Breakfast, brunch and lunch choices are minimal, but still plenty for a quick bite. It's not so cheap, but guess prices will go up even further. I ordered a Latte and Eggs Royal. Both were good. The Eggs were particularly juicy and perfectly prepared. The Americano on the other hand was quite strong so. You also have cake choices. Will I be back? Yes. :-)

Cafe Grande is a bit of a Bruntsfield institution, having been around the block more than a lot of cafes, and lasted the distance. Their tried and tested formula of laid back eating and drinking, combined with a high quality of edible offerings, and a mix of local regulars, yummy mums (need to find a new way to say this, not keen on this expression for some reason) and of course, students, who are a continual feature of most decent cafes. Cafe Grande does that thing that I sometimes think is hard to attain with cafes, where there's a good cross over from day time establishment, to evening hang out. Some cafes get it really wrong, and end up looking more like a school canteen with the lights turned off, but with the ever helpful aid of candle light, Cafe Grande sets itself up nicely as a night time venue, with a simple, but tasty menu to match. It feels very European here at times, with the bustle, look and feel of the place, although if you're planning on arriving at a peak eating or drinking time, get here early, because space can be tight.

I was quite lucky in that I lived opposite Cafe Grande last year, but I was not so lucky as I didn't even know it was there! When I finally made it into the cafe it was towards the end of my time in Bruntsfield, I wish I had known about it sooner. The menu is great! Every option is mouth-watering and yummy. Their paninis are great, the bread they use always tastes fresh and tastes healthy (even if dripping in cheese). My brother said his chicken Balmoral was a bit dry, but the cheesecake was amazing. Furthermore, they have live jazz every weekend. They have a big board with all the details of their sessions and they are always busy. It's a great wee cafe!

I'd heard a lot of amazing things about this place from friends who live nearby, so I had high hopes when I finally got round to trying it out. I have to say though, I wasn't exactly blown away. Maybe I'd built it up too much, maybe the memories of how amazing my recent trip to nearby Gourmet Pasta had been were still too fresh, or maybe it was just bang-average. Either way, it was nothing special. Being in Brunstfield, it caters for the lunching-out types, and the food wasn't bad. It was just a bit boring, if I'm completely honest. There was nothing on the menu that I couldn't order in one of our student unions, and if I did I wouldn't be paying quite so much for it. The evening menu did look a bit more enticing, especially as they claim to only use locally sourced ingredients and the range of dishes to choose form isn't huge, so you know it'll always be fresh. But I just don't know if I could be bothered to go all the way over to Bruntsfield to take the risk. And if I were in this area, I can think of loads of other places nearby that would come above Café Grande on my list.

This great little cafe is a real find in the heart of Bruntsfield. I've been here only once, but really enjoyed it. I had a piece of cake and a glass of lemonade, and it was very pleasant. They certainly have a great range of food and drink - I was particularly taken with their cake cabinet, which displayed the range of cakes in all their glory. For someone like me that loves cake, this was great. I'm interested to see that previous reviews speak of occasionally ropey experiences of this place. My first impression was a very good one, and I think I'd need to visit a few more times to form a solid opinion.

Cafe Grande is more than just a cafe, it is a restaurant and bar as well. The Cafe is located in the centre of the Bruntsfield area of Edinburgh so it is a handy place to pop into for a bite of food. Cafe Grande serves breakfasts, as well as lunch and dinner and they have a menu specially tailored towards children. I ordered their cheese burger for my lunch which was tasty, and came with the standard fries and salad, but it was quite pricey at £7. Their lunch menu includes panini's, wraps and salads. Cafe Grande's evening menu is more impressive with dishes including King prawn Thai green curry and Cajun spiced salmon and prices ranging from £10 to £18. Cafe Grande, as the name suggests, specialise in coffees and they have a wide range of drinks available. They serve Illy coffee, which does not taste a treat - the milk in the lattes are burnt and there is almost no foam on their cappuccinos. Cafe Grande also serves 'Coffee Cocktails' which are priced at around £6 and include drinks such as Irish Coffee and Mississippi (Southern Comfort, apricot coffee and whipped cream) which I haven't been brave enough to try! Cafe Grande always has a lively atmosphere inside, especially on a Sunday evening when local Jazz artists perform in the Cafe.

We were able to be seated upstairs. This place is busy (much busier when we were finished for sure). So if you can, I'd suggest reserving a spot. It's a bit loud in here. Not out of the ordinary for a busy place. We started with the pressed pork belly app. Perfect crisp. Could've used more of the celeriac puree bed. The confit shallots were so good and nicely sweet. Black pudding cubes (small. More of these!). Candied pears. Mmm. Great start. Wife got the char grilled venison on a butternut squash purée and spicy daikon planks (I didn't find the heat, she did tho!). It was excellent and perfectly prepared. Not gamey at all. I got the 35 day aged hangar steak. This is hands down one of the best steaks I have had out in a very long time. So well seasoned! Which was such a pleasant surprise as it left me wanting for nothing to add flavor. The hand cut fries were good but did need some salt. No dessert as, well, our server was scattered a bit all night. We asked for the dessert menu. She brought us dinner menus and we didn't see her for 10 minutes. So we opted to leave, a bit disappointed at the end. We would come back tho. Thats for sure.

We ate a 7 course tasting menu and they DO NOT cater to dietary requirements. You CAN however book the entire place if you have 9 other like minded people who are happy to eat to your dietary restrictions. I think we ended up having 9 plates of food including a little amuse bouche at the start and petit fours at the end and also a mini pre dessert. The portions are well sized. I managed to finish every course and left full but not stuffed. Each plate is beautifully presented and they talk you through each plate before you eat it. As it's an open kitchen and there's only 10 seats, there is the chance to ask questions and speak to the chefs which I really liked. There were some interesting things like freeze dried powdered foie gras which my palate was a bit confused by, but as a whole dish, it did come together if at first I wasn't quite sure. This is not a place for the non food adventurous! I love that they're making fine dining casual, there was great banter between courses and throughout the evening. Other reviews have deemed it worthy of two Michelin stars, I've personally never eaten at a '2 star' establishment so I can't comment about that, but the food was definitely as good if not better than some of the '1 star' establishments that I've eaten at in town. It's also BYOB with no corkage fee, so you can spend as much or as little as you like on booze. They do have soft drinks/tea/coffee/sparkling water for sale as well but serve tap water as standard. This place definitely is not for everyone. But if you're a foodie and have the budget, try and get booked ASAP! (I've been debating between 4 and 5 stars as the food was excellent, and I totally understand with only two people cooking, it's very difficult to cater to dietary requirements & especially for coeliacs they can't guarantee no contamination but it seems unfair that so many people can't enjoy their food!)

The girl serving us was extremely knowledgeable and could explain drinks and dishes to the finest detail, including little enticing morsels of flavour explanations. They do offer a large range of classic cocktails made to measure and personal preferences. I was very pleased with my earl grey old fashioned (though I personally prefer the single large rock of ice) My biggest surprise was how reasonable the prices are compared to other places of similar quality (Kitchin, Scan & Scally et al) The food and service is certainly up to par. Sure these other places have won awards, but I did experience a similar (if not BETTER) experience in la Petit Mort - and as they are just starting out they may collect their rewards later on. Highly recommended and certainly worthy of revisiting often.

Rollo is a relaxed place with dim lighting, quite small with limited seating but the set up is great. So after sitting down with my wine of choice, I could have quite happily just sat and enjoyed the street view and the relaxing atmosphere, but alas I was also starving. My choice: roast pork with apple jus, with a side of roast potatoes and bok choy. For my partner: beef fillet with rocket and parmesan and house chips. For my friend: the sea bass. And oh my, there was nothing in each meal that any of us could fault. The menu is a bit confusing as I was under the impression that Rollo is a tapas and wine style establishment. There are tapas style starters (none of which I tried so no comment), followed by bowls, then mains and sides. You definitely will need a side to accompany your main unless you are only after a small piece of meat. And for dessert: salted caramel and chocolate tart which was to die for. Each item was quite small, however perfectly cooked and seasoned and you will not leave hungry. I think the pricing is very reasonable for the quality of food. We started with the smoked aubergine on toast and mull crab bon bons, followed by the portobello mushrooms and the monkfish Thai curry. Portions are small but priced accordingly, which works out well if you'd like to try several different things. The Thai curry was my favorite dish. The mushrooms were delicious if just a tad too oily. The starters were interesting, but not amazing. For dessert we split a ginger sticky toffee pudding, which was small and tasty (and came with a disproportionately large side of clotted cream). Overall a lovely evening out.

After grazing on so many delicious plates, it was difficult to choose a favourite, but if we had to pick 1, it would have to be the star of the show - the dessert - White chocolate & cranberry croissant butter pudding.
