Ceppo Riace
Brian W.

My dad was raving about this restaurant and was excited to bring me here. He had only been here once, and brought me on the second time. The waitress Nancy recognized him immediately and was so warm and welcoming. She sat us in an area to accommodate my dad who needed to be out of the sun and in a quieter area of the plaza. We ordered three dishes - the lasagna, the ceppo riace, and the scallops (one of the specials of the day). Every one of them - so delicious. The scallops came with polenta, baby carrots, and a creamy garlic sauce. The lasagna was saucey and perfectly baked. The ceppo riace was loaded with sausage and mushrooms, and probably my favorite of the meal. Nancy checked on us several times and brought us an appetizer on the house too - the arancini. Something I want to point out are the portion sizes - this isn't a restaurant where you'll leave still feeling a little hungry. Each dish is a large, healthy serving that leaves you something to take home to enjoy at home. If you're looking for value for your meal (especially in the 2025 economy), Caffe Riace is definitely the place for you to eat. Would highly recommend anyone reading this review to give this place a try!

We just recently discovered this place and went here for the first time last night. My first impression and overall take on the place is that it feels like a little oasis that is really cute. It's located about a full block from the California Ave (old town) Palo Alto downtown. So it really feels like a somewhat separate place with a lot of privacy. The entryway gives the sense that you are entering a restaurant out of the woods. We both reflected at we left that it felt like we were having dinner in the middle of Italy. The outdoor space, which is where we sat, affords a lot of privacy for your dining experience, between the background white noise of the water fountain and the spacious area with enough space between tables that it feels like you can have a private conversation; which we appreciated a lot. The indoor space was really cute and homey as well; we just didn't have a chance to explore it much this time around since we ate outside. Now for the food: it was really good! The complementary bread they brought us was warm, soft, and came with an olive-flavored spread. I got the seafood risotto. They were out of mussels last night, but compensated with more clams, which were delicious, as well as the shrimp, pasta, and tomato-based sauce. As someone who loves things with a bit of a kick, I recommend asking for some red crushed peppers to mix in if you order the seafood risotto. We also ordered the lasagna, which was very cheesy and delicious. Both of our dishes were a good size, filling, and flavorful. By the end of the dinner I was tempted by dessert but couldn't eat any more. As far as service, everyone was really kind and helpful, especially our server Nicholas, who I'd like to give a shout out to here for his excellent customer service. He mentioned the restaurant has been around for 27 years, but that they aren't getting as many customers recently because it's kind of off the beaten path and the general public isn't always aware they are there. So, that gave me one more reason I wanted to write a detailed review and give a shout out to this restaurant. If you are looking for a mid-priced dining experience in a cute, private outdoor space that may transparent you to Italy for the night, I would highly recommend checking out Caffe Riace for dinner sometime. Thanks again, Nicholas! Now we just gotta go to Italy sometime

I went to this place for lunch last weekend and ate inside. The place looks classy and cozy at the same time. I got the seafood pasta and it was really good and full of flavor. I wanted to try something else too but I think they changed the menu and it's not available anymore. Kinda bummed but the food was still great overall. The service was also really good. Our server was great and helpful. Not sure if he was talking to us in Italian or English sometimes, but it made the whole experience feel even more authentic.

If you're looking for Sicilian food, you have to come to @caffe.riace. With lovely outdoor dining area with the beautiful fountain, we feel like we were transported to Sicily! This restaurant is absolutely gorgeous and the food, omg, they were undeniably delicious. Hands down to the one of the best pastas we have ever tried! We had: *Caprese *Arancine *Penne Norma *Carrettiera *Affogato *Pistachio cannoli I love their Arancine. It is hard to find a good and flavorful arancine in Bay Area. I'm so glad we bumped into this place and they make the best Arancine we ever tried. Second favorite was their Carrettiera. Simple dish yet flavored with wholesome ingredients that yields delicious pasta! I love the combination of red pepper and parsley and parmigiana. Truly chef's kiss

Pasta all Bolognese - a favorite!

Love this spot and last night was perfect weather for the beautiful patio. Our group had the Bolognese, the Tutto Mare, and the Scallops special - everyone enjoyed their entree and the portions were big enough that we each took half of our meal home. We always receive very friendly, attentive service at Caffe Riace. On previous visits we have also tried the lasagna, pesto gnocchi, Cannelloni, and the Antipasto Riace appetizer assortment - all delicious! Easy, close parking because it's set well away from the California avenue area.

Delicious food and great portion sizes for the price! Our waitress, Nancy, was so friendly and attentive.

We passed through this restaurant a few times, and always were attracted by its outdoor setting. We finally had a chance to go there for lunch today, and it was really a pleasantly surprise that the genuine Italian dishes were so delicious, and the price was very reasonable. The restaurant has many beautiful paintings and the settings were clean and comfortable. The outdoor area has many beautiful sculptures, make me feel like dining in Europe. The waitress was friendly and polite. We will dine there more often. I would highly recommend this restaurant to you.

We booked this spot for the location and the great vibe of the dining area. Everything started out fine, but once the main dishes came--especially the pasta--it was way too salty. My husband, who usually clears his plate, couldn't even keep eating. Such a waste of a lovely dining space. A little improvement or adjustment in the kitchen could make a huge difference.

I and my wife went for a weekday anniversary lunch. It was easy to find street side parking on the neighboring street. There were enough empty tables available and we were promptly seated. The inside was quite quaint and charming. We ordered the Melenzane al'aceto as our appetizer with the Linguine Tutto Mare and Ceppe Riace as our main course of pasta. The eggplant item was a slight letdown for us mainlu because we weren't really expecting a sweet sauce on the eggplant, but that's how the dish is traditionally made, I suppose, so nothing against the food/restaurant. However, the pasta dishes were exquisite. All of the seafood chunks in the Linguine were succulent, fresh and delicious. The same goes for the sausages in the other pasta. The sauce and cheese were perfectly portioned and made a great pasta dish. Overall, this is a great place to try out Italian dishes. Last but not the least the owner made our anniversary special by providing complementary tiramisu and cheesecake slice - much appreciated.

Both were good, but for a party of 7 there wasn't as much crostini bread. Also the Frittura Mista only came with 4 shrimp. A handful of calamari and sardines though. Nonetheless, they were a good starter. We then ordered 2 pizzas. They came with about 6 medium slices. The bottom of the pizza didn't hold so I had to be a true Italian and eat it with a knife and fork. Of the 2, the San Daniele was the better one. I ordered the Sangria Bianca. Didn't taste the alcohol but I guess that's what gets you. For our personal entrees, I got the risotto special which was seafood. Pretty good. Dessert time. We ordered 2 of the pistachio cakes for the birthday celebrants. For the table, we ordered the Bomboloni. Fried doughnuts with Nutella inside. I got the tartufo. Not the same as tartufo I've tried it Italy but still good. The place itself was decently sized. Parking at the nearby parking garage behind the building is free. Less than a 5 minute walk. Inside, there's 2 sides. The place was busy. They also have a bar but I didn't see anyone sit there. All in all, good food. It's pricey, but worth it.

Given the holiday, there restaurant was pretty busy when we had arrived, but we were promptly seated at an indoor table. They had some outdoor seating as well, but it was pretty chilly that evening. Now the interior is quite small almost to the point of being cramped. The spacing between tables felt like you had elbow space and then some, and the given the surface area on the tables is quite small. We had the complimentary bread & dip appetizer to share, and when our appetizer came out, the waiter tried moving around our dishes to set it down. Unfortunately that meant spilling the dip onto the ground given the crampedness of it all, and some of it did splash onto my dress and boots. Fortunately the quality of the food made up for the spill. They had a Valentine's Day-specific menu, which had some offerings not present on their regular menu. We shared the Arancini di Riso to start. He got the Pollo Milanese and I got the Gnocchi Tartufati with a side of chicken (I love my gnocchi, but I find pasta alone is never enough to fill me). We then shared a Tiramisu for dessert. We really loved how fresh and flavorful all the dishes came out to be. I was absolutely in love with my gnocchi given how light and airy each bite came out to be. The sauce made it even more addicting, as I was consuming bite after bite. The prices were very competitive for Italian food as well. We'd love to come back to try their other dishes, and hopefully we either get a bigger table next time or we sit at one of the outdoor tables.

My dad is a regular at lunch but had never experienced dinner there, and this was exactly the right way to introduce it. Carina was exceptional from start to finish. We'd mentioned 19-20 guests ahead of time, and when I said we'd grown to 22, she had tables added and the room spread out without missing a beat. She made sure kids at the table had options from the main menu outside the prix fixe. She asked ahead about wine on the table. She anticipated everything. We brought our own cakes -- no issue, plates and everything provided. We stayed well past closing. Nobody rushed us, nobody hinted it was time to go. They just let the night be what it needed to be. For my dad, who's been a lunch regular for years, to experience that room and that level of care on his birthday -- that meant a lot to our whole family. Thank you, Carina. -- Anton

The location is perfect - nearby Stanford - and has a great patio for hosting larger parties like ours. Great table layout options, good amount of outdoor heaters to keep everyone warm from 6-8pm in early March. Beautiful upscale setting perfect for wining and dining the candidates. We always get one red and one white wine poured. For basic cheaper wines these are always solid - which is great considering the wine focus of the venue. For food, we get a selection of pizzas and charcuterie to start and then a full buffet dinner. The food seemed even more elevated this year and was fantastic. The caesar salad had whole anchovies on top (a very nice touch), the appetizer bites are bite sized and good variety, the pastas are yummy, and the desserts are delectable! The tiramisu was so so so great! Service was very friendly and as fast as possible with so many. The bartenders pouring wine were a bit distracted, but still did the job. For my entree I had the bolognese. My initial reaction when the entree was placed in front of me was that it reminded me of Chef Boyardee with larger noodles. The taste was much better than the canned stuff but as I progressed through the dish I felt like it needed something more so I don't get tired of eating it. For dessert I had vanilla gelato and the presentation was underwhelming since it was just a scoop of gelato in a white bowl. One never really knows when any restaurant will close, really, but this place just felt like such a Palo Alto institution that it couldn't close, but it did. I had been here at least once before, in the 1990s, when I was in college and my brother worked in Palo Alto. That era feels like the zenith of this upscale chain's cultural relevance, which made my most recent return that much more interesting. I expected things to have changed or at least to have felt different, but my experience in 2025 was eerily similar to my previous experience in 199x: I was expecting to be annoyed by pretentiousness but was instead wowed by the food and the service, which was excellent. But because it felt exactly the same, it didn't feel timeless; it felt dated in a way that I know rationally things are dated, but I'm a very nostalgic person by nature, so I love old things. But Il Fornaio felt too dated either to catch up with the times or to care that they were passing it by. Our large party was originally seated in a cramped area, but they were happy to re-seat us in the patio, which was covered and had heat lamps. That change made all the difference in our experience, because I know my mom, brother, and I would have been itching to get out of here as soon as possible if we had eaten inside. Instead, we enjoyed our leisurely meal, and even though my nephew (a Stanford student) had to bike back to campus, we took our time and relaxed. I can't say I'm sad Il Fornaio is gone. I didn't come here for almost thirty years, and it's not as if the entire chain is closing--at least I haven't heard that it is.
