I came here for a special celebration work dinner and didn't even realize this was a dedicated private dining experience venue. I had seen it on the corner before during the day but never saw anyone inside. We had about 16 people for our dinner, which they were able to accommodate with a u-shaped setup. They had various wines for us, including a sparkling wine, a gewürztraminer, a Pinot, and a St. Emilion. We started with passed appetizers: caprese skewers, smoked salmon and cucumber, and spicy shrimp. We each had 3 courses with 3 choices on each course. - Roasted beet and asparagus salad with feta: great flavor on the beets - Ribeye with caramelized onions: a fatty cut and a bit tougher to an expected, but it was good with the Bordeaux. Those who got the salmon and risotto options really liked their mains - Orange olive oil cake with berries: great olive oil flavor, not too sweet Staff were attentive and tried hard. What can be said for the best dining experience I've ever had for hosting a work event?! From day one, chef Winston was timely, responsive, kind and the most helpful professional I've ever encountered in the service industry. He crafted the appropriate menus that could appeal to our several various dietary restrictions and even provided us a digital survey to make my life easier for collecting all 28 colleagues' appetizer, entree, and dessert selections. Everything was done with such intention to help take any headache off my plate (no pun intended). Cut to the evening dining "experience" because that's truly what it was. We were able to reserve the entire restaurant for just our group. They surprised us with bountiful family style appetizers, the food felt endless, one new beautiful and delicious dish after the next. My entree was the salmon with potato pairings and some accouterments, but I looked at the steak as well as the vegetarian dish and I knew there was no wrong. Each dish was so fresh you could tell they don't freeze or reheat anything. In fact, they consciously purchased and prepped for our group alone that evening. I have nothing but positive things to say about this hidden secret gem. It's very rare these days to find somewhere intimate with such high quality food where the chef is the owner and personally ensures you're enjoying your meal. Came by for dinner the other night and it was a decent experience. As the restaurant was away from the main University Ave strip, street parking was plentiful. Was able to be seated upon arrival as the restaurant seemed pretty quiet on a weeknight. Service was decent, although there was a slight communication barrier... Started off with the prawn appetizer which was tasty and flavorful. The prawns were on the smaller side. The sauce was perfect for dipping the bread. The lamb chop entree came out medium rare as expected but was a touch bland. The sauce and the side of vegetables were decent. The folks here are sooo nice. I brought my mom here for mother's day dinner and we had a great experience. The dining space is very intimate and small, maybe fits 30 people maximum. A reservation is a must; there's no way you can walk in and get seated unless there's a no-show or last minute cancellation. You're served fresh bread with vinegar and olive oil to start. Available menu items depend on what they got from the market that day. According to our server, they don't have a freezer nor a microwave on site. It's purely farm to table. The appetizer selection is fantastic. The scallops and grilled avocado were perfect. Our salmon main plate was a tad salty, but the chiffon cake with vegan chocolates we had for desert made up for it. Highly recommend for small-party occasions. Went for a birthday dinner with 9 folks (probably took up 1/3 of this intimate space) and really enjoyed our evening. Started off with a bunch of appetizers including the beet salad olives and ham and a really incredible grilled avocado. I had the open face steak sandwich which was really good the kids had a kind of cheesy pasta and a number of folks had salmon and the risotto all to positive comments. We didn't wind up staying for dessert, but it did look like the menu was pretty amazing. Service was overall good if a little mistimed and the restaurant got a bit hot by the end of the evening. Found this restaurant thanks to other Yelpers. The experience was awesome. We had early reservation and happened to be the only ones there - which was a perfect way to finish off crazy week and start the weekend off right. Both Kat and the chef (didn't catch his name) spent time with us - talking about the restaurant and the wine selection. Liked the personal touch. Enjoyed the salmon and risotto. Flavors were great and the right portions. As they say - they are Fresh to Table - which just adds to the experience. We had nice conversation while waiting for our food - the music was a perfect complement - smooth jazz and not too loud. This is a great place for quiet conversation and delicious food. Haven't wrote a restaurant review in a while, despite meaning to do so, but this place felt different. Despite commanding a premium-ish price and having a short curated menu, this place is refreshingly devoid of overwrought lighting and decoration. It's well-lit and simple, and you almost feel that you don't need to care a bunch about your attire or your table manners here. Yet the food was high-quality and surprisingly generous in serving size. The seared scallops appetizer paired the lightly flavored scallops well with the sweetness of bell peppers and onion and the richness of (roasted?) cherry tomatoes; it also came with four pieces of scallops. The open-faced ribeye sandwich only topped that with a stupefyingly generous serving of intensely flavored and delightfully tender ribeye steak, atop a good amount of mushroom medley and bread soaked in the flavorful sauce. The food was good, and I could have enough of it. Somehow I feel that this simply joy, of having enough of delicately created food, is getting harder to come by. I went to Bird Dog the previous evening. The food was good, but no better than this, yet the serving size was tiny. I wish I could have more, but more than three dishes for one person seemed ridiculous. I was left dangling, almost, but ended up with a larger bill than this dinner at Thyme. Chef Winston and front of the house manager Maurice serves up a solid menu with five star service and new American food that has body, depth, and dare I say a bit of southern twang. DH ordered the tiger prawns appetizer that was the size of an entree. The sauce on that dish was sweet with a bit of spicy - so good with the ample supply of the soft bread they gave. I ordered the special of the evening, mussels with garlic and herbs. Plump and packed with garlicky flavor this dish is also an appetizer labeled entree. The mussel sauce on bread was a close second to DH's dish as it was less viscous and didn't have as much depth of flavor. We ended up canceling the rest of our order because it was so much food! A word of advice here is come Wednesday to Friday because by the time Saturday rolls around they are out of a lot of things in the kitchen. They are closed Sunday and Monday. We were staying about a block away (at the Cowper Inn B&B, also highly recommend) so were happy to find such an amazing restaurant for dinner. The chef happily split the steak dinner in the back for a perfect-portion-sized meal for our kids to share (ages 16 and 12). They cleaned their plates--even the vegetables! Parents agreed it was delicious steak, well seasoned. We also had the grilled avocado appetizer--a little smaller than expected given the price for it, but delicious and fresh. Other entrees include the crab cakes--again, nothing left over, yummy, a lot of crab and not too much filler--and the mushroom and asparagus risotto. The risotto tasted just like spring! While conducting flight training we stopped in Palo Alto for fuel and food. One of our guys found Thyme online and we headed over from the airport. What an awesome experience. Winston and our server, Kat, really took care of us. They were the most genuine people which added to the amazing experience we had. Food was out of this world. We ordered the pan-fried tiger prawns with chili and garlic and the pan-fried salmon with spiced lentils and wilted spinach. Had a rare night out with my partner and decided to visit Thyme. Walked in and was told reservations were full and that we probably couldn't get a table but as we were leaving, the lead waiter said someone had canceled and we could have one of the open tables. We sat down, excited to eat at a well reviewed Palo Alto restaurant. Things started out reasonably well. The waiter came over and greeted us and took our drink order, and returned promptly with drinks and some oil/vinegar and bread. After giving us a few minutes to digest the menu, he came over and took our order. This is where it all went downhill. We sat at the table waiting for our appetizer to arrive for what felt like an hour. I'm not sure exactly when we sat down, but based on a text message I received while seated, I know it took at least 45 minutes to deliver the starter course. We had the seared scallops, which were passable (though not worth the $20 price tag). After we finished the starter, the waiter came and cleared our plates and we waited eagerly for our main courses....which did not arrive to the table for a whopping additional 40 minutes! And to top things off, the waiter delivered my entree to one of the other customers, who had it for a minute and did god knows what to it before the waiter realized his mistake, picked up the plate from the other customer, and walked over and placed it in front of me. He assured me the other customer hadn't touched it, but still...WTF. I had the rack of lamb, ordered medium rare. It came out more on the medium side, and looked NOTHING like the professional photos found here on yelp. Not to say that's an issue, but for a $35 entree, I expect it to look like something I would have been challenged to make in my own kitchen. The lamb was tender, but very under-seasoned. In fact the whole plate was dying for some salt. My partner was equally underwhelmed by her main. Needless to say, we did not stay for dessert, but got the hell out of there after nearly two hours of "fine dining". Based on excellent Yelp reviews, I was very excited to patronize Thyme. I found the small and seasonal menu intriguing. I understand that they are currently in their soft opening, and of course, all restaurants have small issues in the beginning. I made a lunch reservation and the phone interaction was great. The server was friendly and professional. We even pushed our reservation slightly when we were running a few minutes late and they were understanding and courteous. However, unfortunately, that was likely the highlight of our meal. Upon first being seated, we discovered that one water glass and one spoon were noticeably dirty- the water glass had lipstick stains and the spoon had congealed food stuck on it. This is a small issue and I was willing to overlook it. However, when quietly pointed out to the server, the server did not apologize and also forgot to bring us a clean spoon. We were forced to steal a clean spoon from a spare table setting. Strike one. The restaurant only had one server, who was doing their best. Unfortunately, it was obvious that they were frazzled and service was disjointed and slow. Again, I am willing to overlook this during a soft opening as these hitches are not acceptable but understandable. We waited 40 minutes until our entrees arrived at the table. For a working lunch, this timing is really not acceptable. Strike two. I was really hoping the outstanding food would make up for the poor experience. We ordered the roast chicken, salmon cakes, and steak sandwich. All dishes came with a side of field greens. All of these dishes had issues. The chicken was so over cooked as to be almost inedible. It was incredibly dry and the outside was so hard, I thought it was a bone. I saw one table leave it untouched and another table refused to pay for the chicken. In retrospect I should have done the same. Strike three. The salmon cakes were supposed to come with aioli, but this was forgotten. The salmon cake otherwise was quite good, I enjoyed the generous chunks of salmon and the minimal breading. The steak sandwich was also fine, though it would have been nice for the bread to have been toasted. Overall, I would also say all of the entrees lacked salt. The side of greens, were not uniformly dressed. Typically, at nicer restaurants, the greens are tossed in a bowl with the dressing before plating. The greens at Thyme, were plated, then the dressing was drizzled only in the center. The greens were so minimally dressed, that we were forced to use the oil and vinegar on the table to dress them ourselves. Overall, while I appreciate the concept and I really hope they can iron out the details in the future, I found our experience to be very disappointing. We had walked past a few times and thought it was time to change the habit and walk in.......we had made a booking just in case! Tucked away from the mainstream part of the Palo Alto village this place offers a comfortable destination. Chef Winston came out and gave us the 'insights' on the menu...lovely man with a good fun attitude. Four of us settled in for the night; three of us started with pan fried tiger prawns and the other the chicken and cherry tomato soup. For mains, two had the rack of lamb.....tasty fresh New Zealand lamb nearly perfectly cooked, another the the pan fried salmon and fourth had the grilled hand made sausages with mashed potato....the latter two dishes did not match up to the dizzy heights of the lamb however they were ok. The salmon just a little over done and the sausages perhaps a little too plain. Two deserts were selected, the apple and cinnamon tart, and the warm goats cheese.....the later was just right with an compelling taste. We enjoyed a Brassfield Serenity Reserve blend which good fruity flavours. In all a good night although I do think some of the dishes are a little on the expensive side. I went here again last night and am so happy that it was just as great as the first time. This time I brought along a visiting friend of mine who I know to be extremely particular about his food in so many ways. He not only wants everything to be organic, but it must be local and sustainable and humane and so on. He's been here all week and we've been trying to find new places for him to eat besides Flea Street Cafe and a very few others. My friend loved everything he ate, so it was a great night for all of us. The soup was delicate and wonderful, the salads beautiful, and our main courses were all super fresh and perfectly executed. Just realize that it's all about the food here. This is not a trendy, fun, hip local hangout. You almost feel like you're in someone's home. It's a small, cozy, simply decorated place with the kitchen barely separated from the dining area. The service is just as simple, but the staff are all friendly, welcoming, and genuinely happy to see you. The owner and chef Winston is passionate about serving the freshest, most alive local food. I was severely disappointed by Thyme after reading these reviews. A few colleagues and I went to dinner here on a Tuesday night. We made a reservation in advance which was unnecessary considering how empty the restaurant was. Two children sat at the bar (perhaps the owner's?) which I wouldn't have minded except they were watching videos on their phones with the audio on. More importantly, we were dissatisfied with the service and value at this meal. Regarding the service, we were waited on by a gentleman who seemed confused and bothered by every question and request. When I asked if he could add meat or fish to the salad, he rolled his eyes at me, told me he would check with the chef, and never did. He rolled his eyes again when I asked for no mushrooms on the steak sandwich. When that steak sandwich came out, meanwhile, it was just okay. The meat was well seasoned and cooked, but it was on a mediocre open faced piece of bread with a small arugula salad on the side. For $35, I was expecting something more substantial and better plated. My colleague ordered the crab cakes which looked equally as plain and were not very filling. In total, we ordered 2 appetizers (the beet and asparagus salad was my highlight), 3 glasses of wine, and 3 entrees. It came out to almost $240 (!) or $80 per person for a good (not great) meal. We loved our food and experience at Thyme. The food is as described - very fresh. We had the scallops and the beet and asparagus appetizers. The scallops were very fresh, you get 3 large ones, along with some roasted veggies. Small app, but good. The beet and asparagus salad was very fresh and delectable. An ample portion to split. We loved it. We both had the fresh salmon for an entree. It was very fresh and yummy, and the pickled mango and leeks on top was a nice contrast of flavors. It's hard to rave about spinach, but it was so fresh and delicious, you'd think they just picked it out back. We topped our dining experience with an apple tart with fresh coconut and custard, which was plenty to share and a nice ending to a great meal. We left full and satisfied in a good, healthy way. Took my girlfriend for her birthday's dinner - what a great and cosy place to do so. We started with a great French Pinot Noir bottle, prawns appetizer, and continued with shared (yes - the chef put half of each dish on both plates!) rack of lamb and risotto main course dishes. We completed the meal with a shared apple tart (with a birthday candle on it!) and two glasses of complimentary white wine to help us celebrate! We had a reservation for a table for 7 on a Friday night; the table was set for our arrival. That was a coup, based on some other postings. Cheery server who explained nothing. We ordered one of each appetizer for the table -turned into a challenge as to how to divide mini/micro portions which were just OK. Main courses: Dungeness crab cakes were more filler with herbs that detracted from crab flavor; ribeye steak sandwich was ridiculous in texture and portion size. Rack of lamb seemed like the way to go, based on our internal review. Apple tart dessert had little apple, overwhelmingly sweet, and could be completely eaten in three forksful. If I hadn't seen the menu and I was not paying for the food, I would say most of it was tasty. But the fact is, I did see the menu and noticed that they didn't put all the ingredients they listed and they over charged us. They never came over to check on us and when we did wave the server down, she seemed to have no clue. There was only 1 server for the entire place (+ 1 person filling water glasses). Mushroom toast with wild mushroom, avocado and ricotta cheese $15: It was served with one toast topped with wild mushrooms and ricotta cheese and a salad on the side. The salad was refreshing and had a nice dressing. The mushrooms were tasty and the toast was crisp. It was missing the avocado. Half-way done with this appetizer, the server's helper drops off a small plate with a little bit of avocado but doesn't say a word. Apparently they had forgotten to give the avocado on both appetizers we ordered. Asparagus with roasted beets, avocado, honey herbed goat cheese and pistachio vinaigrette $12: Essentially the same salad as mentioned above but with the beets, small cut asparagus and a different cheese. It was missing the avocado till they brought it out after we had already eaten half of it. The goat cheese was plain (no honey or herb) but when we asked about it, our server had no clue. Rack of lamb with cannellini beans and heirloom baby carrots $28: This was the best of the two main dishes we ordered. The lamb was cooked rare (we asked for med-rare but prefer it under cooked than over cooked). It was super soft and we liked it. Open-faced grilled rib-eye steak sandwich with wild mushrooms and caramelized red onions $32: Major failure!!! First of all, before ordering, I asked the server how big the steak was. The fact that it was a sandwich made me wary but the server assured me it was a full size steak and said I could get it without the bread and have it bone-in. She clarified the steak wasn't huge but it was full size. She had me with bone-in so I ordered it med-rare. She returned a few minutes later to say the Chef already de-boned it but I kept my order. When it arrived, I was surprised to see a small thin piece of meat (it was half the width of a typical steak and it was 1/2" thick). Worst part was it had no seasoning. The 2nd disappointment was the salad & mushroom was the same salad & mushroom that came with my appetizer and they forgot the caramelized red onions!!! I felt like I was eating a continuation of my appetizer except they switched the toast for a thin piece of meat. When you have only 9 dishes on your menu (4 appetizers & 5 main), you should repeat the ingredients. Major bummer. To make it worse, the bottle of Margaux 2010 Chateau Kirwan was listed for $60 on the menu but after we got home and looked at the receipt, we were charged $75. We will try to contact them and remedy the over charge. With all these discrepancies and redundant flavors/ingredients, I have no desire to return. Overrated. $20 for half a grilled avocado and handful of grapefruit slices appetizer. Ordered medium lamb chops, they arrived 90% rare and dark pink. Salmon dish was mediocre and arrived with cold mashed potatoes. Wine (Pinot noir and a rose) tasted vinegary and not fresh, for $15 a glass. I used to work in Palo Alto for 2 years so I know people will just flush money on anything - but this place was like a charicature out of the show Silicon Valley. Servers were nice though. read more

The couple that runs the joint is friendly and helpful. As an appetizer we tried the scallops. They are pan-seared and served with roasted bell peppers, some arugula, and drizzling of chapagne vinaigrette. At $18, the price was high, but it was worth it. They were good. Next we tried the risotto at $25. The risotto is a vegetarian-friendly dish that has wild-mushrooms, asparagus and shaved Parmesan. There was also a large helping of sauteed onions in the mix. Small and awesome! Our server and the chef was beyond welcoming. My girlfriend and I were very impressed on how they can be so welcoming the moment we walked into the door. We had the crab cake and their lamb. The food was just as good as their customer service. Our server was able to explain how their business works and how they obtain their food. Many (if not all) of their ingredients are fresh, which they explained that everything is made the minute it is ordered, which is something you do not get everywhere. I will definitely return!!! We had a lovely dinner at this neighborhood gem last night. Chef Winston was very accommodating to my food sensitivities and changed up a few ingredients without any fuss. The mood in this small intimate restaurant was relaxed and felt light years away from the hustle of Silicon Valley. My spouse and two friends all ordered variations on the steak sandwich (it can be ordered as steak or as an open face sandwich) and all said the meat was delicious, it came with vegies and mashed potatoes. I ordered two appetizers as my meal, the grilled avocado salad and the spicy shrimp. Both were delicious. If I had one suggestion it would be to remove the peel on the avocado, it is served as a half in its 'shell' and probably holds together better that way when grilling, so it's a small thing, otherwise the salad was very tasty. If you don't mind the waiting, we waited for one hour after we ordered. Other tables are complaining too. And the waitress Kat/Cat is arrogant and rude, since she was the only one who takes order, she thinks she is the queen, terrible experience there, the worst restaurant I've been to in Bay Area, it couldn't be worse( I am always a nice person/yelp, but I was too disappointed); my gf was so mad, wants to talk to someone, but can't find anyone to talk to, the server was like, sorry I can't help with the speed of chef cooking, there is only 1 chef in the kitchen! Their food was not high quality either, not tasty; the lamb chop doesn't look like the pic on yelp, I guess it's because the chef changes the way he made it as he wants(free will), it's a big piece instead of small pieces, not easy to share with friends (group of 3) We will never come back again!!! read more

Best crab cakes in the Bay Area! I'm from Seattle and have eaten many crab cakes; these were so good with large lumps of fresh crab. The apple tart was also so fresh and delicious. The food does take a while to cook, but Cat (who is great) did let me know that ahead of time. It's the kind of place you take someone/people you like talking to and enjoy a long delicious dinner. This is definitely a more European style eating experience. If you want to chow down and rush, you wont be happy with the experience. If you want to enjoy good food with good friends, then you're in for a treat. Kat was great answering questions and making suggestions. As designated driver, I had the pineapple ginger juice. Very refreshing and delicious. For dinner we were a bit torn. We definitely wanted room for dessert. We ended up ordering all of the appetizers and one main dish. Three of us shared the food quite easily and each dish was perfectly prepared. We did save room for dessert and the pane cotta was sublime. Small and intimate, I brought a group of customers to Thyme for a professional dinner. The food pairings were incredible and the service so excellent, we all felt like we were the only table there. On top of that, the reservation and payment were all mobile friendly making it easy in and out. The chef and owner personally came out to check our order and ask what they could do to give us the best experience! I would highly recommend this place, and WILL be going back. read more

This is the worst restaurant I've been to in easily 5 years. While the people are lovely and friendly, the food, the atmosphere, and the service are truly, spectacularly awful. There is not an ounce of warmness or welcome in the cold, overly bright, oddly quiet and smell free dining room. It made my skin crawl with coldness. I think I've felt more warmth and softness in an emergency waiting room. Most importantly, the service is horrible. The timing is WAY OFF and they do NOTHING to ease the pain of the wait. They don't bring more bread, they don't apologize, they don't try to push more alcohol on you, NOTHING. They make you sit and wait like you are waiting for a medical exam. Except most hospitals and doctor's office at least give you softer lighting, comfortable chairs, and other homey touches. This place was more like a warehouse feel - cold, too bright, and zero service. The saddest thing about Thyme is, however, the food. If you are going to take an animal's life, you should honor it by cooking it with love and flavor and make sure you eat every last bit. Thyme should not be killing animals and serving them. It's just wrong since they clearly do not know what they are doing. The food is odd, greasy, tasteless, and boring. I was thankful the portions were insanely small because the food was so disgusting. Everything tasted old and nothing was fresh. We ordered the salmon, the scallops, the lamb, and the highly, highly misguided quail. All around, we hated everything. The salmon was bland with overly wilted spinach and mushy lentils. The scallops were is a bed of bland, bleached out veggie stock with zero flavor, the lamb tasted of burnt plastic and carrots tasted like they were out of a can. The quail was truly spectacularly awful, greasy, taking like it was cooked three days ago and reheated in a microwave served on top of disgusting mashed sweet potatoes flecked with cilantro (who the hell puts cilantro in mashed sweet potatoes? Someone unclear on the concept of taste, obviously) swimming in a brown, greasy gravy that definitely came out of a box, and a side "salad" of, I kid you not, three leaves of Costco spring mix. After my honest assessment of cilantro in sweet potatoes, they did remove that cost from the bill. Which was nice given it was about $30!!! They bill themselves as a farm to table restaurant. And I guess technically the food from Costco does originate at a farm at some point. But the idea of fresh food is BEYOND a joke at Thyme. They need to just close their doors and stop torturing the public with their truly terrible food and obscene lack of hospitality and comfort. read more
