This place isn't what it used to be. The food is poor quality these days while prices only go up. The people are rude, lazy, and we've even had a situation where one of the employees smelled awful like he hadn't taken a shower in a week. Completely unacceptable for a place that serves food. Even taking it to go, the employees left our food behind the counter and never called out our order causing it to be cold when we received it only AFTER we had to ask for it. The only thing this place has going for it is the ambiance which is very nice (with the exception of the smelly employee that was waiting tables.) with warm lighting and nice tall windows making up the walls of the restaurant. Unfortunately this will be the last time I will be going to this place. Shame that the owners let it get run down to a shadow of its former self. read more

***Take Out Only Review*** When that craving for kabobs hits, you have to answer, which lead me to Cafesano. I was able to walk right in, straight to the take out counter and order. Anytime they had you a pager, you know the wait will be long.... the wait was about 15 minutes for my order so pack ya patience and fully understand it will be a minute. After a quiet contemplating wait, my buzzer did not even light up because the same gentleman who took my order looked at me with his eyes and basically find me the bag he just placed on the counter was mine. The smell engulfed my vehicle as my mouth started to water off the smell alone. I rush to my desk to break open the bag and all the savory goodness greats me. The chicken was seasoned very well as the flavors popped off your taste buds. The rice was fluffy and feeling and the grilled veggies are the best I've had in a while. The real star of all of this was the tzatziki sauce!!!! It was so rich and creamy, it was amazing to say the least!!!! I would go back for this alone. They are also very very generous with the fresh warm pita they give you!!! I don't say this often but it was worth the $13 lol! Probably my favorite lunch choices in the area. Love the pizza, the wraps, everything is great quality. They hand you wireless beepers but always bring the food out so not clear why. I will say they can get kind of slow when they're busy so take that into consideration. Love the homemade lavas chips. read more

Apparently cafesano finds it acceptable to serve 1 soggy tiny piece of proscuitto cut in half for the proscuitto and mozzarella panini. We showed them and they were nice enough to make it a "double" portion for free. The double is more like a normal portion. It was not good at all even even after the fix . The panini had grill marks but was overall cold, if you don't believe that take a look at the mozz in the sandwich not even partially starting to melt a bit. Today, over a leisurely Sunday lunch, I will happily bring my previous 4 star rating up to a 5! :) All of the great things about this Cafesano location that I mention in my original review (read it for tips and recommendations) remain consistent and positive - no change there. Happy to say the "Room for Improvement" item (too long a wait after order is placed for the food to arrive) that I previously dinged this place the 5th star for was, today, a non issue! I do hope that management really listened and took the bull by the horns and permanently fixed the takes-way-too-long-to-get-your-food issue. Kudos to them if they did. KEEP GOING. This, imho, was truly the only thing standing in the way of a perfect 5 stars! Our 3 person lunch was pretty perfect. The bill came to $36+ which isn't fast-food-cheap but was decent value for what you get here, the quality and taste of the food, fresh healthy ingredients, juicy grilled chicken-on-a-skewer....and no tip required! :) We sat comfortably at a window booth with the beautiful Winter sun, and warmth it threw off, streaming into the huge open dining area. The Significant Other Foodie and I ordered two salads and two meat skewers for around $27. +Fresh ingredients +Seasoned Steak Skewer was cooked perfectly +Salad dressing was on a side container -The Seasoned Steak Skewer had sort of a gas/propane flavor -I saw a couple of pizzas just sitting under the lamp for more than 4-5 minutes. Our first visit to Cafesano. We were on vacay with fam in VA. This place was highly recommended. We were told this place is always packed during peak hours so we decided to have a very late lunch around 2pm. At that time the place had like 10 customers. We had the place to ourselves. We really like Cafesano! They have a wide range of options suitable for anyone, even the picky eaters of our family. They also have lovely outdoor seating and a beautiful indoor atmosphere. Occasionally there are small inconsistencies (chicken being slightly drier or bread being over cooked) but nothing major enough to stop us from coming. I had been wanting to try Cafesano for quite sometime. When they opened this one in Sterling, I figured that I would wait a while before going to give them time to get their act together (as is the case for all new restaurants). Then, a coupon arrived in the mail for one free meal when you buy one (in other words, BOGO). That made us more willing to give them a try. We were here on a Saturday around 5 p.m. At that time of day, it wasn't very busy. Before I go too far, I'd like to talk about the ordering procedure. When you enter, you see a line. There are signs with arrows pointing left for dining in and right for take out. On the wall, there is a large menu. There is also a stand with menus. I saw some people take a menu, grab a table and look over the menu before ordering. In other words---you have to go to the appropriate register to order your food. After you order, you are given a tray that has a wrapped set of silverware for each person, some extra napkins and if you are getting a fountain soda or a lemonade, a cup. A beeper thingie is put on your tray---that's how they find you after you take a table. The soda fountain is to the left of the register and behind a wall. I had to hunt for it. No one asks you if it is your first time here and no helpful info is offered up. So be sure to ask. Wine and beer is available. As they got more business, we saw people order a whole bottle of wine. Runners bring out your food, as well as the wine and the beer. The menu is huge and can be overwhelming. To make it easier, I suggest deciding beforehand if you want a wrap, pannini, salad or main course will help narrow things down. I ordered a prosciutto and mozzarella pannini. It consists of: "An Italian classic----Imported prosciutto de Parma, fresh mozzarella, tomato, fresh Basil and Italian vinaigrette". My husband ordered roasted turkey and havarti pannini, which consists of: "Thinly sliced breast with tomatoes, lettuce and havarti cheese dressed with Dijon-horseradish sauce". Each pannini comes with pita chips. We both noticed that the panninis were barely grilled at all. It looked like whoever made them just left them on the grill long enough to get grill marks on the top. The cheese on both of ours wasn't melted at all. I don't know if this is how Cafesano makes their panninis or whether the person making them didn't know what s/he was doing. If it is the latter, then the back of the house needs better supervision. We didn't mind it too much that they weren't properly grilled. What we did mind was that the dressing on the panninis wasn't properly distributed. On my sandwich, I only got a taste of basil in one bite and barely any Italian vinaigrette. My husband, also, only got the Dijon-horseradish in one bite---and it was really intense. Had the dressings been properly distributed, we both would have a far better dining experience. Otherwise, I thought that the prosciutto was good quality and added a nice bit of salt to the sandwich. The mozzarella was, indeed, fresh and the portion was generous. My husband, too, liked the ingredients in his sandwich. Despite, the bread not really being grilled, we both found it to be fresh and tasty. Neither of us was impressed with the pita chips. They looked like they had a good deal of seasoning on them, but looks are deceiving. If we tasted anything at all, it was some salt. The chips were fresh and crunchy but dry. With the coupon, dinner cost $15.02. We both got drinks from the soda fountain. If we do go again, it won't be anytime soon. They may need some more time to get it together. Mangers at this one we're standing around, didn't help customers or help run food. At Reston managers are all around and checking on customers. Been going to Cafe Sano for years. Today we stopped in the Sterling location for dinner take aways. The 8" pepperoni pizza had 6 pepperonis on it. I opened it before leaving to ensure it was correct and that's when I saw the sad, sad pepperonis. I asked the take out cashier if that was normal and he then asked someone nearby who was making salads. I was told 6 pepperonis for the 8" pizza and 12 for the 12". The told me they would add more "just this time". Nice of them to fix it this one time but $1.99 for 6 pepperonis? One pepperoni on each slice? It looked like a mistake so I was shocked to learn it was standard. Our other entrees were good but not in a hurry to go back, unfortunately. read more

I loved the Reston location so much before the Sterling location opened. I live in the middle of both and like them both, but I like the larger outdoor section in Sterling. At both, the pizzas and salads are delicious and a few other things I have tried are great as well. To-go orders got a little confusing at Reston but no big deal. Service is generally good for ordering at the counter, and getting the food delivered to your table based on a wooden number. my whole family loves the food and the atmosphere! read more

Really wanted to like this place but the food did not cut it for me. We ordered 2 steak kabob platters and everything was super bland. On top of the steak not having any seasoning, I could taste the gas from the grill (the veggies also tasted like gas). The rice was super dry and again no seasoning (like c'mon not even a pinch of salt). The only thing on my plate that I enjoyed was the pita bread. Anyone care for soggy pizza? Or a pesto pasta that is as flavorful as blended leaves? We tried this place as we like the one in Reston. But somehow the taste buds are not fascinated by what's served here. The pesto pasta lacked serious flavor, the Mac and cheese for toddler was unsalted. We returned the pizza only to get another soggy one! The tomato is oozing to the point that it making the crust wet. The salad was their highlight l, although they could serve it in a bowl, I just couldn't mix the dressing well on that small plate. And while I understand it is self-service, they don't make that part any easy. Absolutely no one to attend to your request and they keep everything behind the counter. Skip this one and go to the Reston one. read more

My family came here to celebrate my mom's birthday in early September. I was a bit skeptical of this place because this restaurant serves more than one kind of cuisine. The area was beautiful. There are plenty of places to sit and there is also outdoor sitting. We ordered a lot from the menu to share and/or to have for ourselves. The food was pricey for the 6 of us, but that was already a given. When we ordered our food, we were given a pager and we decided to sit outside since the weather was nice at the time. The food came out pretty quick than I expected. I was hoping to give some leeway between the appetizers and entrees, but they all ended up coming at once to our table. So our table was pretty full with food, but we managed to have some space. I ordered the Chicken Alfredo ($11.69). It all tasted okay. I didn't get much flavor from the dish. Everything was cooked perfectly, but the dish was lacking on flavor. I tried out the other foods and it tasted okay too. I wouldn't mind giving this place another try. Went for lunch at work... I was surprised that I just came here for the first time. The interior is nicely done and the food is affordable! I had Avocado, tomato, and mozzarella salad with side of chicken. I made a right choice. The food was about right portion! We had a really good time having lunch here. The staff was nice and most of the stuff are self-serving (like water, soda, stuff like that) but I didn't feel inconvenience at all.
