I visited Cafe Villa Clara for a quick Cuban coffee and Cuban toast. I grabbed a seat at their small bar area, which seemed to have taken them by surprise, but the person who took my order was kind, just busy. The space overall is not very big, and they have what looked like a sushi bar on the other end of the restaurant (I didn't have time to go check-it out). My order included a Tostada Cubana, requested to be extra toasted. Traditionally, it would come flattened, and in a crisply pressed appearance. Regrettably, I sliced it in half before remembering to snap a photo. But from the image, it's evident that the toast wasn't as thoroughly toasted or flattened as I had hoped. As for the cafe con leche, I only tasted it and it was fine. I have a slight sensitivity to cow's milk so I can't drink too much of it, which is why I always order my coffees with an alternative to cows milk. It's worth noting that Cafe Villa Clara doesn't offer alternative milk options. So for anyone with lactose intolerance, milk allergies, or a sensitivity to cow's milk, you might need to look elsewhere for your coffee fix. Although my visit was brief, I left with thoughts on how the experience could have been enhanced. Receiving my toast as specifically ordered would have been ideal, and the availability of at least one milk alternative could greatly benefit a diverse clientele, especially those who enjoy a quick stop at the "ventanita" for a coffee that may need to be tailored to their dietary needs. Curiously the menu does not have any price. There is a small line saying that all items are market placed. We ordered two breakfasts plus a pastelito and empanada, and the bill came to $40. Cafe Villa Clara is my local go-to ventanita. They have a restaurant with a full menu, but I usually just pick something up at the window. Their cafe con leche is great, but they tend to make it with a lot of sugar so ask for it a bit less sweet if you don't want so much sugar. I've been coming here in and off for maybe 4 years now, i live walking distance from here, so it's convenient. One thing i had an issue with, was how loud the music was, especially when you're trying to enjoy a meal. So i used to tell the girls to please lower it. Which they would gladly lower once they saw me entering, as i would come and eat EVERYDAY here. None of the girls attending had an issue, except for one that goes by Mari. When she used to see me walk in, she would intentionally turn up the music, then make a face when i ask to lower it. I order the same thing daily, so they don't even ask me what i want. They know. Everything seemed well. Until today, when i walk inside, i immediately feel like im at club space in 2008. Music is blasting for absolutely no reason. I ask to please lower it, and once again, am given attitude because apparently as customers, we must conform to the environment. Mind you, i am paying $14 daily, 7 days a week. Fair to say this will be my last time coming here, unless they get rid of the staff or re train them. Funny thing ... Although I have frequented this place over the years and have consumed countless coffees and empanadas from here, I never actually knew the name of this business until recently. I simply referred to this place as "the coffee stand across from the post office" ... OR ... "the walk-up window across the street from the college" ... OR ... "the Latin cafeteria on the north side of the Hungry Bear building." I believe the building was recently painted and a new sign was installed which finally revealed their business name. Lol. This review will be based solely on their outdoor walk-up window because, although I have been here many times, it has only been to the walk-up window. Service can be hit or miss. The rating on service fluctuates between 1-star (on a bad day) to 3-stars (on a good day). When I first started coming here a few years ago, 1-star service was the norm. I guess it really depends on WHO is working ... AND what kind of MOOD they are in. Since I am not hispanic, I rarely receive the same level of service as other Miamians do. Unfortunately, it is a noticeable difference. Cafe con leche is consistently very good. I appreciate when they ask whether you prefer your coffee light or dark. Empanadas and tequeños are also very good. They are often out of these yummy items by the time I show up later in the afternoon. However ... during a recent visit when their pastry trays were empty, a nicer, newer employee offered to go in the back and prepare one for me. That was "a good day!" This is your usual inexpensive Latin cafe. Prices are good. The food is decent for the price. I get my colada, empanadas, and croquetas here for breakfast if I am nearby. If you are at MDC Kendall campus, I would walk across the street to get food from here rather than stop by the school's coffee house. They have daily specials for lunch. You gotta get there early because they will run out of your favorites by the end of the day. I like their Piccadillo and vaca frita. Service people are nice. I work right across the street from this restaurant & have never had an issue until this Thursday morning. The hours are from 7am-10pm. The girls inside usually turn off online ordering options until 10:30am, not sure if this is done purposely with reason or just laziness but it makes it difficult to order food to pick up because it forces me to call. The girl who takes the orders on the phone is either new or just straight up mentally slow. You can speak to her in slow mo clear Spanish and she still will not take the order correctly. She gave me an issue by saying I could not place the order of food I wanted on the phone that I had to place it at the window once I arrived. I explained to her this can't be done because it's for my work employees and we're understaffed we can not be waiting 10+minutes when we can simply order it for pick up and arrive and pay once it's done. But NO she was PERSISTENT that I order at the window and HUNG UP didn't even give me the chance to tell her no. I called again and immediately cut her off and let her know that's not possible and she can easily take the order through the phone call and someone from my job will arrive within the next couple minutes since we work across the street. She sighed and took my order and couldn't even get it right even though I repeated it 7 times in a calm and clear tone. She didn't even know what sides comes with her dishes cause she kept saying my burrito comes with a tostada when it doesn't!!!! And I simply wanted to order a tostada as well as the burrito breakfast. My employee arrives to be told she CAN NOT PICK UP & PAY FOR FOOD AT THE WINDOW!??!!! How does that make sense!! THERE WAS NO ONE INSIDE THE RESTAURANT BUT THE EMPLOYEES. She walks in and the lady speaking to my employee was rude attitude, just straight up problematic. She did not greet or dismiss my employee with professionalism or manners. The cashier at Clara villa shouldn't be a cashier she should be a correctional officer with that stank ass attitude. It's a shame she acted this way when we gave her cordial respect.
