I saw this place that had great reviews for breakfast and I decided to go and grab a bite. Everything seemed good, took a seat and I took a couple sips of my coffee and the rude lady asked me to leave. Her reasoning was that she needed to make "space". Being a person of color, I feel that I was discriminated and I was the only one asked to leave. The place wasn't even busy but yet she felt that I needed to go. I wanted to write something, because i see many comments with low ratings based on service. I am sure the service and demeanor of staff is shocking to people, who are mostly not local frequenters of this establishment. Their prices are very competitive and their food is tasty, so I recommend to order ahead for take out and be very clear with your order. We stopped by on the way to an event to grab something healthy after a weekend of bad bad eating. The salads here are delicious! I don't usually get a Caesar salad cuz it's usually drenched and not as healthy as I would like it to be. If I'm eating a salad I want to make it count you know what I mean? Anyway rest easy this Caesar Is just lightly dressed. Also definitely add in the chicken - it is worth it! Grilled perfectly juicy and for chicken breast it's sooo tender. The yellowtail salad is also not to be missed! I usually don't order a whole lot of cooked fish due to it being dry or not seasoned well (sashimi fan here) but this one was good! This review is for takeout lox and bagels and the breakfast potatoes. Great proportions on the lox and bagel, not to much onion etc... the side of potatoes are spectacular. I don't know why it's so hard to find great breakfast potatoes but these are them. The owners are so nice and have the most amazing memory of what you like after only going there a couple of times. We come to Café Vahik at least twice a year during our San Diego/La Jolla vacations It's a MUST STOP for our coffee! Even if we dont stay in La Jolla, we will drive up here just for the coffee, at least once during our stay, or I wont feel complete. Then, I crave their coffee everyday until we visit SD again months later These people are seriously magicians. Starbucks has NOTHING on this couple. I had a poppyseed muffin and my friend got the blueberry muffin as well, both were delicious btw. This time around they had amazing Thermos' and both my friend and I got one. They made the perfect souvenirs bc I am seriously OBSESSED w how tasty the coffee is here. I was looking everywhere for a hat / cap and was sad to be leaving without something SD. But everything worked out bc I couldnt be happier to have one of my fav things (a good coffee thermos) coupled w the one place I, no matter what, will always visit in La Jolla lol so perfect! Little synchronicities like that make me so happy! Not to mention, it works great bc it kept our hot coffee hot ON OUR ENTIRE DRIVE HOME back to Phx! Located just outside of La Jolla main area on the way to Birds Neck. Seemed busy and only the owner and one helper but they moved it along quite well. Got two ham egg and cheese bagels. Only 3 bagel choices which are plain , sesame and everything. Bagels were toasted just right with a crunch on the outside and chewy on the inside. Price is reasonable. read more

The people who work here are really nice. I've come on busy days and not so busy days, and always they treat me so nicely. I once came in totally on a call, and they were really nice about it.. and I felt bad that I was one of "those" people. I love their chai tea -- I don't know what they put in it, but it's SUPER rich. They use extremely high quality ingredients in their sandwiches, and they don't skimp on either cheese or meat (like a lot of the chains do). Café Vahik is a total hidden gem. We visited today for lunch after finding it on Yelp of course. I had driven past Café Vahik numerous times and wondered about it but had never taken the time to look them up. I'm very glad I did today! Café Vahik has a solid menu with numerous bfast bagels, paninis and salads. They also have specialty items like ceviche. Atmosphere: Smaller place with tables inside and a few tables outside. They have a quiet vibe even though it was very busy. You order at the counter and they bring food out to you. You also pay after you are done eating- which is always a good sign of hospitality. Food: We ordered the ceviche which was very good. It was served in a big bowl and topped with avocado with chips on the side (pls see photo below)it's made with parsley instead of cilantro which is different but it worked - my bf liked it bc it wasn't too zesty, I had the half chicken sandwich with a Caesar salad- the salad was my favorite part of the meal as the lettuce was nice and crunchy and the dressing wasn't too overpowering. My bf had the California bagel which he enjoyed. Service: The owner takes the orders and seems like he makes the cold orders. He was very nice and friendly happy to answer our questions. There was one cook as well, who brought out our food and was very nice as well :-) The price was right - as our three items came up to $22. We definitely plan to come back to Café Vahik. read more
