After looking over this cafe's website I gave it a try. Really nice inside and a really large and nice outdoor area. I had an Iced Latte my friend had the same and a piece of carrot cake. All good. Multiple flat screen TV's and seating options. Easy to park on Lincoln Avenue but you have to pay. We had a nice time. My friend thought it was expensive. I did not. Going up Lincoln Avenue amongst a bunch of crummy looking buildings is a similar looking building where you can get coffee, tea, and other hot drinks. It's also not good looking inside, so it's not the typical coffee shop to stay at a long time. Cafe Utjeha has been around quite a while yet many people don't know about it. Has pretty good products as far as coffee at affordable prices. The service was friendly at least from the barista, while the men are kind of just there it seems. A reason why many haven't known about this place is because of where it actually is. It's easy to miss it because there's not much going on. This is north of Lincoln Square, where there's a lot more hip stuff. Clean interior, at least as far as you can see because it's dimly lit. It's not that welcoming compared to a typical coffee shop. At least the female barista was friendly. The men who worked there didn't interact. As far as the coffee, it's good. It's about $3 for most things. Has some non dairy milks. There's some pastries like this flaky thing kind of like baklava, or you can get something healthier like an orange. Basic stuff in this small cafe. It's kind of like being in Turkey or some Eastern European type of place with music. There wasn't that much of a smoke smell as there had been previously. read more

They had amazing service and great people. The people were so nice and the lights were off so it was a really calming space. The food was really good and made right there. Very nice cafe, great coffee, super nice and friendly waitress. I was super happy to see the bathroom so clean and stocked with lotion LOL! However, I'm writing this review in disappointment as to how old the deserts were. I was very excited to try the "Kinder Cake". It looked very good but it definitely was far from being fresh. This place is...um...quite unusual. On the outside, it looks like this cafe would be a complete dive. But walk right in and...oh my. It's very fancily decorated and the atmosphere is sort of like coffee house meets nightclub meets...I don't know how to describe it. Words fail. And so did my iPhone camera (too dark). I ordered a latte and sat down to take advantage of the free wifi. It was a little unusual that the server actually took my phone and entered in the network password herself...okay...that's a little odd. But she was friendly and brought out the latte in record time. The latte wasn't a mind-altering experience but it was reasonably priced and perfectly fine. There appear to be many regulars here, and there is a very nice looking outdoor seating area which I will definitely take advantage of when the warmer is nicer. But I can't say this would be my go-to place if I wanted to read or quietly ponder life. Summing up: Cafe Utjeha is a good place for a quick cup of coffee and people watching. read more

So I ambled over to Cafe Utjeha for yet another stop on my cafe project. Offerings are very streamlined -- some tea, some strong coffee drinks, some dessert. Fair enough. Service was prompt, friendly, and welcoming. The patio is the real gem in Cafe Utjeha -- large, comfy tables with beautiful flowers in hanging baskets, plenty of room between patrons, and nice mood lighting. Hours are great too -- they are open until 11p every day, a full hour than most cafes in Lincoln Square. Alas, a few blemishes -- the dessert, while nicely presented, was a bit on the stale side, the music was a tinny bump ntz bump ntz bump ntz, and all the patrons were smoking like chimneys, which did detract from the overall experience. Stopped by after a recommendation from a friend. I'm a big coffee drinker and I must say... The best espresso in the area. While I was there I tried a couple items from the dessert menu... wow! The cakes were so moist and decadent, I ordered two more pieces for carry-out. They have baklava, tiramisu, cherry-cheesecake, and other Eastern-European assorted cakes (one of my faves is the Kinder Cake which has Nutella in it) The patio outside is a great addition in the warmer months. I was on my way to Lincoln square when I passed this café. I thought I would give it a try so I stopped in. I regret it, even though there was signs that said no smoking, almost everyone in there including the server was smoking. I ordered a slice of the cherry cheese cake and was very disappointed, the cake was rock hard. lets just say that I did not eat it. the coffee tasted ok. there was a nice patio but it was filled with a loud, rude and judgmental crowd, made up of mostly men. I took a closer look at the inside and was not totally shocked to see that it was dusty and not very clean. Definitely NOT coming back, honestly stay away from this place, dunkin donuts would be a better stop. read more
