Its convenient that you can order food at the neighbor place and have it delivered to your place and it is easy to hang out. The cocktail menu is constantly changing and makes it interesting, and the personnel are not unfriendly and reserved. It is a good place to have casual encounters or a casual night out. To that, service is sometimes a little spotty and the seating is limited particularly during rush times. The atmosphere is pleasant in general, although some additional detail could be used and make the experience truly high. Worth going to see, should you happen to be passing by. read more

Stopped by here on a Friday evening with another couple for a drink. We were able to sit right away! Nighthawk has a cute, cozy atmosphere and wasn't very loud which we appreciated. The drinks here are unique and well made!! Especially the Witch, Please which tasted like a blueberry muffin. Our server's name I believe was Danny? Nighthawk is located just across the street from the Kimball Brown Line station. Makes it easy to not worry about driving drunk. The drinks are pretty cheap and interesting. All this has is alcohol. It does have Hot Dog Station next to it. This place seems like a dingy dive but there's a lot more going on. Claustrophobic feeling people can sit outside at the patio, which is cool. What I like about the inside is that it's almost like hanging out with drunk and high friends in a basement or a garage. Cool drinks. They have a few crazy ones. Get a Goatsucker. It's $5 for a shot each of whiskey and pickle juice. The pickle juice helps soothe the burn of whiskey. Rest of drinks are cheap. They also have coffee, and open in morning. Fun place to slam a few shots, both alcohol and pickle juice. It's open both in the mornings and late. There's no food here, but this is next to Hot Dog Station. read more

I've been here late afternoon on my visits, and every time, the staff has been top-notch. They have a great drink selection, and on my most recent visit, I met a gal pal for some deserved libations and awesome conversation. We tried some of the beers, and my friend started with the adorable (and tasty) Irish coffee. The close proximity to the Brown Line means that it is easily accessible for those relying on public transportation, with free parking on nearby streets for drivers (we successfully dodged students on our quest to park, as classes were just letting out). My favorite local bar. Outdoor patio that is dog friendly. Food is available next door which they happily bring to you at the bar or outside. Ever changing cocktails depending on the season. The bar tender is an easy to talk to guy who actually helped me make my his/her cocktails for my wedding so I'm forever grateful. Staff are easy to talk to, welcoming, friendly, and bring that neighborhood hospitality. They even hold events every now and then teaming up with other restaurants/establishments/charities for a good cause. If you don't know what you have a taste for this bartender can help you based on what you tell him you like. The only improvement I could say would be to get more seating in the establishment so more people can enjoy it. If you're in the area or looking for a local Chicago bar with flair try them out. Nighthawk is an excellent neighborhood bar with a large patio right next to the Kimball Brown Line station. This bar and Surge are my two favorite spots in the Albany Park area. They have a creative and regularly update drink menu with a diverse and eclectic crowd. In the winter, Nighthawk is extremely cozy (date worthy!), but they also have a wonderful outdoor patio with plentiful and spacious seating. I feel that the patio is a bit of a hidden gem. Nighthawk is wonderful. It's the cozy coffee shop around the corner and its the perfect little place to work out of, read, or just hangout. It's both a bar and a coffee shop (dangerously good). They serve la Colombe and make a great latte. The inside of the place is my favorite, it makes you feel like you're in a diner, but it's also charming and comfortable. My friend and I came to this place on a whim and with some direction. I absolutely loved the atmosphere and was in awe of the graceful grunge of the place; the bar was pretty, the ceiling and lighting was beautiful. I would describe this place as vintage metal. The barista was very nice and helpful; she recommended a drink and even did her best to do some coffee art. It was very chill and quiet in the place. We didn't try any alcoholic drinks, but heard they were good! Prices weren't too bad, but a little on the higher end, but the craftsmanship and care, was worth it. Thousands of dollars racked up from operating without a liquor license. Today, they are appealing to their fans and neighbors to help them out of the bind they've fallen into. Before Albany park started racking up cool drink spots, this was one to be experienced and in the running as first on the scene. Just an unsuspecting coffee shop that doubled as a speakeasy. Not as big as most bars, just a casual kinda joint that served up tasty java and libations. A neighborhood gem and an asterisk among the urban, ethnic landscape. My spot is usually perched at the bar. It's a small place so most open spaces (behind the bar - within view) are utilized for holding or storing bar and drink components. It's nice actually. Different from bars that have televisions running constantly. Your eyes can wander the bar and pickup on the many offerings they have available. With seeing all of their "wares", you may decide on ordering something different the next time around. The place is tiny. Max capacity is probably around 20 ppl, maybe. I haven't gone for drinks, only was there in the day time for a post lunch drink and I was excited to see they carried Circle City Kombucha-I'm not a coffee drinker so, when places have some more novel non-coffee options, I perk up, but sadly it was out. I had a green tea instead which was just fine for the cold day. My friend got an Americano and watching the barista make the coffee it looked like it was good. The place reminded me of one of my fave spots in Hong Kong, where it was mostly coffee and pastries in the day time and then a bar by night. There weren't too many others there so the barista and I had a friendly chat before letting me and my buddy catch up. The place seems like it's used as an extended living room for locals, two people were there doing what seemed to be a career coaching session and Nighthawk's calendar is filled with events that definitely was beyond your average coffee house stuff: film noir screenings, painting, a cut above your local musicians and trivia nights (not knocking it, they have that too.) This has been a dry area for as long as anyone can remember... meaning, if a drink was desired you were sadly limited to cheap, lukewarm Barefoot wine hastily purchased from a distant Jewel or whatever canned offerings happen to be available at a 7-11. And this is your little place, conveniently just across the street from the Kimball brown line train station. It isn't a dive, it isn't a pickup bar. Neighbors are here, friends and they are treated charmingly. This is a wonderful place and a welcome spot. Small but with great pride in quality, creative craftsmanship and attentive, warm friendliness. I'm up north side of Chicago on most Sundays. We had lunch and some of the people I was with wanted to chill at a cafe and grab coffee. Some others (me) wanted to grab a drink so I found Nighthawk Chicago, a bar/cafe that serves both coffee and alcohol. What a great concept. We should do this more yeah??? Anyways this bar/cafe is a very laid back chill place. It's not loud. You got a TV playing a game, and people coming in to read a book, hang out with friends or do work. I really enjoyed this spot and the concept. Unfortunately I'm rarely in the area but if you're craving a decent cocktail or coffee, check it out. I can't speak on behalf of what it's like during the evening but it's a very good spot for an afternoon of relaxation and casual hangouts. read more

Such a bummer. I always loved this place, but I had a terrible customer service experience today. While visiting on a weekday daytime, I bought a muffin and small iced coffee. The barista informed me there would be a free refill with my purchase. When I asked for my refill less than an hour later, another employee working told me "We don't do that." "Oh, sorry -- the other barista who rang me up, she's the one who told me." I motioned toward her, and he informed me: "I'm sure someone told you that, but I'm the Coffee Manager here. We don't do that." I wouldn't have purchased the iced coffee if it didn't come with the refill, since it was pricey to begin with. When I asked the barista if I could have a refill anyway this time -- because that's what I had been promised by his staff -- he lectured me about "our cold brew is too expensive to just be giving it away." The man continued to inform me that "we're a small family business" and "how do you expect me to pay people fairly" and so on. Ironically, I had chosen to patronize this business today for that exact fact. As a freelancer, I work exclusively for small, locally-owned businesses and nonprofits. However, I found his response condescending and rude. I regretted going out of my way to visit a small business when I have consistently received friendlier service from corporate and semi-corporate (aka Dollop-owned) coffee shops around Chicago. Honestly, I will still likely return because I *do* appreciate small businesses, and I've never had an issue when visiting Nighthawk as a bar at night. All of the female staff have always treated me kindly. I'll just skip out on coming during the day when I might encounter the Coffee Manager. Yeeeesh. read more

So we went here for a night cap after a funeral and repast just to catch up with my family before we left the next day and it was a cool place to chill out if you aren't ready to go home. So the only reason it didn't get 5 stars, was because the table we sat at was wob-wob-wobblin haha, we were trying to push the table to the wall to try and mitigate the shaking ("don't shake the table unless you wanna get shook!" if you know, you know lol) . I don't remember the exact drink, but I know that it tasted good because I was going to get another one, but we had an early flight to catch back home. The service was pretty good, and it is a very laid back bar. I really like the character of the walls and ceiling - it was a mixture of modern art with almost 20's style ceiling moldings. In my view, this is basically the archetype of the neighborhood bar--only a lot more stylish than most neighborhood bars are. Everyone is friendly (including the other patrons), the drinks are good, and there are lots of events--for instance, on alternating Wednesdays, Bob Ross Night. It feels a little bit like when you were 20 and visited your girl/boyfriend at another school and went to a college party where you knew no one but everyone else knew each other: they treated you warmly and it was honestly sort of fun just to be in the room with them all as they got buzzed and had fun. read more

Fabulous addition to the neighborhood! I visited last weekend for some late morning coffee and ended up coming back that evening for late night cocktails. This bar/cafe is absolutely adorable with really friendly staff, and their drink menu honors the diversity of our neighborhood. My morning visit consisted of a mocha latte with almond milk (me and lactose are not friends) with a slice of lemon pound cake. Both were delicious. My husband ordered an Americano and was very pleased as well. Breakfast food is limited to pastries, but no worries. My understanding is that the place is BYOF (bring your own food), so stop by one of the many restaurants to grab some heartier fare in the area on your way! The coffee was delicious, but the cocktails really stole the show for me. Not to mention that their prices are pretty reasonable. I visited during Albany Park World Fest and stopped in with a few friends. Among us we tried the Bloody Mary with accompanying beer back, the Hotel Nacional, the Hawaiian punch (boozy punch), a pisco sour, and a couple of other drinks whose names I can't recall.... for obvious reasons :) All of the drinks were tasty, but the Pisco Sour and Hotel Nacional were outstanding.
