Long story short we did not go out of our way to The Levee, we ended up here because of the rain. The Levee seems like one of those neighborhood bars, it had an old homey feel to it. The crowd seemed like they were having fun singing along to their favorite tunes. They do not offer draft beer so we ordered two cans of Revolution A Little Crazy. Never knew this bar was as big as it was inside. I always pass it by and never really thought about going in until last weekend to attend a social event organized by a friend. I was quite impressed. Of course it's your typical neighborhood dive bar, a vintage one at that, with all the sights and smells that a neighborhood dive bar has. When you first enter through the door, you have the main bar. Towards the back and to the right is the private room where parties can be hosted. It contains another small bar inside, with a pool table and a basketball game. Very spacious and plenty of seating available. It's not my typical bar scene but will definitely come back if another event arises. read more

This might be the perfect place to wear the $8 coonskin cap I bought at a truck stop in Iowa back in March. I've long admired the bold and rugged spirit of the Great American Frontiersman, the type who moved west to the Rockies during an age when someone who wanted attention would simply shoot their pistol in the air- even in an indoor setting. Aside from using my plastic gold to buy a cowboy hat and a snap button shirt from Alcala (and later the aforementioned coonskin), I've never emulated anything close to, say, the 28-month trek of Lewis and Clark. But in this Age of the Short Attention Span and Even Shorter Walking Strides, going just a few blocks west of all the Logan Square madness to find a quieter place feels like a big adventure. Despite the westicity of the place, the ceiling is not riddled with bullet holes, and aside from a solidly blue collar clientele this is not what I'd call a dive. In fact it's truly classy- on par with the Clipper, even, if much forgotten in the decades since this was the property of a successful showbiz star. The highlight is the winding brass rail along the wildly curvaceous barfront. It's amazing how many rascals you can look in the eye (and everybody's a rascal here, though of the friendly kind) and converse with at this bar, the counterpoint of the antisocial American-style flat bar. And then there's the sprawling back room, adorned with farm implements and featuring a pool table and darts. If you look hard enough (or drink hard enough?), I swear you'll even find a full height basketball hoop inside what looks to be just a closet. Between farming, shooting pool, making eye contact with strangers, and playing some basketball, I can't think of anything else I could possibly want from a bar. read more

This bar is awesome and has 2 pool tables. I spent my St Patrick's day here in 2019, so much better than going downtown to some shit show. The owner is very warm and hospitable, they had green beer for St. Pat's but mainly this bar is a relaxed neighborhood calm place. I love it. Don't come here this is my place. read more

"How did you end up here with two such gorgeous women?" How can you not love a place where a man is capable of calling you gorgeous without being crass about it, even if the man in question is pushing seventy? After that charming introduction, he went on to regale us with tales of his wife (also a librarian like myself and my female friend, obviously this man has a type), his eleventy billion boats and his grandchildren. Typical bar conversation, to be sure, but the gorgeous deco bar and obvious history the place is steeped in elevated this simple interaction into a sort of tipsy poetry. Further, how could I not love a bar where the patrons continually make me laugh until I snort? ("Oh, that laugh! Marry me, please!" "Isn't one librarian wife enough?" "Yeah, you're probably right.") For a introverted misanthrope, there's nothing more hard to find or sought after than a refuge where I can think, for even a little while, that this whole human race thing ain't so bad. read more

I'm very happy to say The Levee is my neighborhood bar. I moved in a few blocks away in September and didn't make my first visit until December. Honestly, I should have gone in sooner. The Levee is truly a neighborhood bar. Warren (the owner) is friendly and available, ready to chat about the neighborhood, sports, politics, whatever. He's very involved in the community (even letting the Hermosa Neighborhood Association host meetings here) and even turns his back room into a polling place come election season. The Levee is no frills, to say the least. The beer is cheap, the selection is varied (they have domestics and 'fancier' hipster beers like Revolution and other local favorites) plus they have pretty inexpensive shots. I even saw someone drinking (and enjoying) cognac one time, so to say they don't have a wide variety of drinks is an understatement. There's no food, but people are welcome to bring in something to eat and sometimes there's pot luck style food on special occasions (like St. Patty's Day). There's ample seating at a wonderful bar from the days of yore. The whole bar wraps around the space and has brass rails, which reminds me of the 1920s. I imagine this place used to have a live band and people wore some fancy cocktail attire when they came to sip some cocktails. It's definitely a cool remnant of a different style of bar construction and makes the space seem more welcoming because you can see everyone. On Fridays, a lot of local teachers hang out in here as well as a lot of other blue collar-ers from the neighborhood. There's a lot of good conversation with friends and strangers and everyone is always eager to get to know your name. I'm definitely glad to call this my neighborhood hang out and, really, what else could you ask for in a good bar? read more

I had an awkward time here. I wanted to love this bar so badly. The ambience is perfectly kitsch. I love all the shiny glitter, lights, and nick-nacks. My problems were more practical in nature. The bartender seemed drunk and was bitter, ignorant of beer, and careless. There is no draught beer. The can of beer he managed to scrounge up for me, he couldn't describe the flavor of. The can was dirty or rusty when I received it. Revolution was the only beer they had in cans that was (IMHO) drinkable. It would be easy to stock up on some more rare and interesting brews. And then he was too present, lamenting the many types of flavored vodka on the market now, among other things. I don't want to be mean, but it was not fun and I will not be back. read more

We were early for a train from Healy station so we went to The Levee which is diagonally across the street from the train station. It was the best decision of the day. The bar tender was great, the drinks were great, the atmosphere was authentic, and the owner gave us a personal tour! I went to the Levee 10/15! My friend Erica's birthday, her boyfriends band was playing blues and they are AMAZING!.... At first glance I thought....I've seen this place a million times....never .thought to walk in ever. Will I be back HELL YES. Is it a Dive bar? ONLY THE BEST CLASSIC KIND! not in a cheap way but in a.....we've been here forever and we had a lot of stuff. They were decorated for Halloween and it was SPOOKTACULAR! (corny but true) THEY HAVE A BIG PARTY ROOM where I resent not having my birthday there....but it's PERFECT....and they have a jukebox. I definitely recommend this place! read more

My sister & I found this bar about 6 months ago, and I am not sure I've been to another since. It is a wonderful place where you will be taken care of, the drinks are cheap, and the games are fun! The owner Warren will make you feel right at home and a part of the family. They have great specials, fun events, and karaoke. All the bartenders are great and the locals are too. We went here for a friend's birthday party and had a GREAT time watching the live band, drinking cheap drinks, playing darts, and dancing. The place is large with a big main room with a full bar and then a side room with bar games, more tables, and live music. This is the perfect bar if you just want to relax and have a drink. The place is always filled with good people. The staff are very friendly. Tons of extra room in the back, perfect for having your birthday party. And last time I was there they just got a ping pong table. So it basically just keeps getting better. Loved the Levee. Went there the other night to celebrate a coworker's departure from the corporate world. It's as dive as you can get but has lots of charm. Warren, the owner loves and Cubs and his place shows it. He's made it part game room and karaoke. Yep! I said karaoke and Warren sings a mean My Way. If you're expecting awesome beer and cocktails, this place is not for you.
