I've been here on two separate occasions, once to get a couple of paninis and a second time to get an iced mocha. The paninis were just okay, although we did like sitting in the back patio during spring. The ambiance outside was nice and cozy. The iced mocha was not very good, the chocolate sauce hadn't melted at all so I ended up just drinking an iced latte, but even the iced latte wasn't good. I didn't end up finishing the whole drink. Unfortunately I probably won't be back. I really hope Cafe Sophia ups its game, otherwise I don't know how it would compete with the other coffee shops popping up all over downtown Hoboken. Free WiFi though with seats available so that's definitely a plus. read more

I came in and ordered an iced macchiato. The barista continued to anxiously say he didn't know how to make it while the owner sat on her phone behind me. I told him how to make it because he seemed new and I came to understand its not his fault he wasn't properly trained. The espresso tasted really burnt, then the owner came up and charged 6$ for this whole interaction. I don't blame the barista, I blame the owner. Won't be getting coffee here again. read more

Lovely and quaint SoHo-style cafe in the middle of West Hartford Center. Food is scrumptious and the coffee flavor options go for days. Yummy biscotti and apricot pastries. Try the omelets! They're a delight, and the veggies are free. The seating outside on a mild, sunny day is my favorite part of the atmosphere as locals drive by and wave hello. I have yet to try their food - it looks amazing - but I absolutely swear by their coffee. This place recently reopened with new owners and a new name and all of the changes I've seen have been for the better. They finally are open early (7 AM) so I can pick up a cup of coffee on my way to work. The old owners didn't open until 8 or so when I was already on my way and that just never made sense to me. It's a coffee shop! So that small change has made my mornings 20x better. Like I said, their coffee is wonderful. It is bold and strong and just hits the spot. It can be a little on the expensive side but, hey, it's Hoboken. I've never gotten a full meal here although they do have a pretty extensive and yummy looking menu, but I have picked up a couple of muffins and scones on my trips. Everything always tastes fresh and delicious. I had the mixed berry scone the other day and my boyfriend had the blueberry muffin. Both of us decided that our own pastry was the better one, but that may have just been a pride thing... They have a beautiful inside that looks like it would be great to go for lunch with a friend or even set up camp and get some work done. They have a few seats and tables outside to sit and enjoy a drink or meal when the weather is nice. Lastly, the owners and baristas are all very friendly and kind and service is fast. I went here on Saturday morning with my partner and our dog. Reviewing the menu on their bench, we quickly grabbed the single outdoor table once it freed up. We were left to clean the table ourselves, and while waiting on my order to be completed I brought used napkins, cutlery, and plates one by one into the cafe. We settled on breakfast sandwiches and coffee to start our day. Egg and Cheese Croissant: My partner ordered his with cheddar and bacon, while I chose provolone and added mushrooms and avocado. I found the croissants to be light and extremely flakey. My one complaint is that they were leaking oil from the base. The mushrooms were raw and thick cut - from the additional cost I expected them to be sauteed, seasoned, anything. Iced Mocha with Oat Milk: Although we were eating in, the drink was prepared in a plastic cup. I asked easy on the ice, but it was filled the brim. Chocolate syrup was poured over the milk and ice, proceeded to sink into the crevice of the plastic cup, and later stirring and shaking was no use to mix it. The coffee was poured in last, but ultimately a quarter of it splashed off the surface of the ice and on to the counter. In the end, the drink tasted like cold oat milk. Cappuccino with Oat Milk: This drink lacked the balance and complexity that makes a good cappuccino. It was overly acidic. Oatmeal Cookie: Great size for the price. Overly sweet and lacked the textural interest that I seek in a good oatmeal raisin cookie. As we were leaving, the owner hurried out grumbling, calling his two female staff bimbos. Not a great impression. Overall, for all of the choices in Hoboken for coffee and breakfast, I would not recommend Cafe Sophia. I also recommend looking at other places who are transitioning to environmentally friendly alternatives (e.g. biodegradable straws) or at the very least not using single use plastics for drinks to stay. read more

Great service on opening day and the sandwiches we got were outstanding. I ordered off menu (whoops) and got peppers and eggs on a long roll and it was great. My better half ordered "The Monroe" without the sriracha mayo which was also delicious. They serve Lavazza coffee and it's really nice to get coffee served in an actual coffee cup for a change. I spoke with the owner and his inspiration was all the little Italian coffee shops he remembered from growing up in Hoboken and they really did a great job of blending that feeling with the modern coffee shop. Stumbled on this small breakfast spot a few saturdays ago. It is a small corner cafe but also has a few tables to sit down and eat in if you want. The one issue off the bat was that it was kind of smokey in there. The kitchen it pretty much behind the counter so the smoke comes into the table area. Maybe they need to improve the vent. The other issue is there is one guy running the show so sometimes you have to wait for service. He takes orders, brings food to tables, and cashes people out. Probably need one more person to help out. As for the food it wasnt anything spectacular. The nutella croissant was stale and tasted a day old. The egg mozzarella cheese sandwich on a croissant was ok but not the best in town. I don't really have a crazy urge to come back but if I am in the area and dying from hunger I would come. Food is decent, staff is rude. I ordered to go and waited as numerous orders placed after mine were picked up. I saw a to go bag on the counter behind the woman at the register and asked if it was for me. She said it wasn't, walked out from behind the counter, and sat down to eat. A few minutes later I asked the guy manning the grill about the bag. It WAS my food. The woman seems to have completely different attitudes towards people who are regulars and people who aren't. I tend to give retail and restaurant staff a lot of latitude when it comes to attitude, it's a hard job and I wouldn't want to do it. But this was appalling. read more

We stopped in to try their latte here. Much better lattes elsewhere in town. I do like that they have milk alternatives and it's a cute little place to sit. They're only open till 4pm most days. The barista behind the counter was not very friendly. We also tried the croissant with Nutella. It was nothing special and didn't seem fresh. It was the end of the day so maybe that had something to do with it? The croissant was also way too expensive. The lattes were average priced. We will not be returning here. I stopped in here to get a breakfast sandwich and received the biggest attitude and extreme rudeness from The woman, aliyah, at the register. As someone who has worked in hospitality for many years, I know how easy it is to put on a smile and be kind and welcoming to patrons. Experience is everything and as a coffee shop with a ton of competition, it is a very bad choice to be rude to people giving you business. Super excited that this spot opened! I'm newish to the neighborhood and the place is two blocks away. Not much in this area to grab a quick bite / drink so I'm very grateful :). Boyfriend picked up the Fig&Pig and a The Pollo-amazing. Bread was toasted and crunchy, meat was fantastic and greens were fresh! He wasn't gone for very long and mentioned the service being great and clean. I hope they eventually come out with a Matcha/fancy teas for the non-coffee drinkers!! I decided to try this place out for the first time this morning. I had a big deadline for work and wanted a nice little coffee shop to work in. Unfortunately, while the food was fine, the atmosphere was terrible. The cafe is tiny, and the cook and the barista were arguing for a large duration of the hours that I spent there and it carried through the entire place. Decided to stop in at 7:05 (google maps said they open at 7), door was open, lights off, two people setting up for opening...so I politely asked "are you open?" To make sure I had the correct time. My husband and I each got a breakfast sandwich. I had the Sophia and he had the Monroe. The quality of the rolls/ bread here really made the sandwiches. We stopped by because it was the nearest cafe to my wife's new office (we were on a reconnaissance trip for her). Ordered the breakfast egg/cheese sandwich and coffees. Cafe Sophia is a great place to check out in the back of Hoboken, they not only do they have pastries and coffee, they recently opened it now to sandwiches for breakfast so ask for Mike he'll hook you up. It's a nice addition in the back of Hoboken since there isn't much to offer yet back in town. The coffee they have are lavazza either hot or cold brew. They have seating inside or outside and they take cash or credit. My suggestion is go for a latte and order the Monroe or if you're in the mood for lunch the pig fig is the way to go, parking is available on the street and so is bike parking, and if you're in the mood for pizza if you go down in 2nd toward Jackson you will find a pizza shop in a garage read more

I stopped in on an early Saturday afternoon and was able to get a seat right in the front window. I ordered the Monroe, which took a bit to come out, but was worth the wait. The flavors were perfect and the portion size was as well. I didn't find myself wishing I had a side to accompany the sandwich at all. I also found the service to be good, as the guy manning the cash register took the time to bring my meal over to my table, as well as check in before and after I received my food. This is a pretty small place and seating is limited so I would recommend coming with some expectations for a wait. read more

Terrible customer service but the food is good. Ordered online and arrived 10 minutes later when they told me my food would be ready and had to wait 15 minutes in the store. When my order came up the only other customer in the store had ordered the same thing and they couldn't decide who to give the sandwich too, then the order came out wrong. (For two customers) When I brought this to the attention of the cashier they asked if I was allergic or if I could take the unwanted toppings off. Overall disappointing experience, the cashier/ barista was sitting down at one of the tables and only gets up once someone is waiting at the counter. She was blasting music from videos and games on her phone making it impossible to work out of the cafe. I'm not sure why free wifi is offered when it's not a work friendly environment. Cute little cafe in Hoboken! They offer breakfast sandwiches, cold sandwiches made to order, and paninis as well as coffee and juices. Staff is super friendly! The inside is really cute, modern, and charming. Each time I've visited, it's been very clean. I had the Pig and Fig panini, with no prosciutto as I'm a vegetarian. It was delicious! I won't be returning. I just moved in nearby and have been trying out every coffee shop and cafe I could find. This place is actually the closest to me, so I tried it out first. I came in shortly after opening on a weekend. While I was waiting, the person working at the register kept saying "sir" and got mad when I wasn't responding - I'm cis and present very feminine, I don't respond to "sir". I got an iced latte and a croissant sandwich with egg, cheese, and onion. The total was about $9.50. The latte was just okay, but the egg sandwich was something I would eat again on a whim - not amazing, but we all have our mornings. It's important to note that I had prosciutto added to my sandwich, which I did not ask for and I was not charged for. I eat meat and like prosciutto, so it was fine, but this is a big concern for vegetarians. I felt really uncomfortable the entire time because one of the people at the register did not have a mask on at all. They occasionally took sips of a drink, so I tried to let it slide. The other employee had her mask on their chin the entire 15 minutes I was there. I could see their mouth and nose the whole time. There was no drink in sight, so it's clearly just how they wear their mask. A few days have passed and I'm in a total work/school crunch. It's 11:00 am and I haven't had breakfast ye, so I run over to Cafe Sophia to avoid dirtying my dishes. I order a hot latte and the same sandwich (no prosciutto). The same employee was there with the mask on the chin, so it is clear that this is a routine thing, not an off day. On top of this, the hot latte is $.25 cheaper than an iced latte, but my order was over a $1.00 more this time (over $10.50 for the total). At this point I'm stressed out from work and the plethora of unmasked people in one tiny space, so I say nothing because I'm trying to get out of there ASAP. Between the rude introduction on my first visit, the unmasked employees, and the price discrepancy, I will go out of my way to not return. It's also clear from another review on here from Sept 2020 that the maskless thing is normal for them. They may have gotten an extra dollar out of me on one order, but the trade off is that they won't be getting a penny out of me in the future. read more

I went in today for the first time since they opened - for a hot coffee. They had ran out of hot coffee. A 'cafe' that ran out of coffee... they've been opened for a few weeks now so no excuse for running an amateur operation. They did have cold brew, which I ended up taking. But they didn't offer to charge me the lower price of the hot coffee... instead charging me the full amount for the cold brew. I am so very disappointed in this family owned business. This is the third time that I have tried to come here but had to leave because the manager was not wearing a mask and today the customers inside at the counter ordering were not wearing masks. We order from Hot House and come to Sophia's all the time. I had called Hot House to let them know two weeks ago, but clearly nothing was done.
