Suya fries
Fiona T.

Ate here a week ago and still dreaming about the Suya fries! I actually learned of this spot from a non-related Yelp review that mentioned the restaurant - looked it up and it was 12 mins away from me! I've been looking for a new African restaurant to try close by, so it was really just my luck. We came for takeout on a slow Sunday - the wonderful waitress helped us order (didn't get her name). She even kindly brought our order to the car while we were waiting, very nice of her. We ordered Suya fries, Suya beef & jollof with goat and plantain. Truly blown away by the Suya fries as I've never had anything like it before - delicious. The flavors were THERE. Seasoning was on point and the mayo based sauce on top was so damn good. Beef was flavorful and juicy. Jollof and goat was spicy and also delicious. I can't speak for in-dining experience, however they do have a stage inside, so looks like they host various events throughout the week. I will absolutely be returning. So happy we found this tucked away gem!!!!!

Delicious E African fare in a dim, intimate setting. Wish we could have gone on a day there was a live performance! I've gone here twice and their stews and swallows don't disappoint. This time around we tried their jollof rice which was super flavorful - not too wet like I've had it in the past either. They also have vegetarian/vegan-friendly options which was perfect for my vegan friends. My chicken was great but my friends' beef was on the tougher side. Service was normal and they played music videos on the TVs lol. I got a drink - The Akwaaba- which was pretty delicious and a good blend of their house whisky and lemonade. Overall Cafe Songhai never disappoints when I'm craving fufu and other swallows!

Read my words very closely this is hands-down the best African food that I have had in Atlanta, the Egusi with chicken soup was amazing! Fufu pounded yam was good also!

U P D A T E Still a solid 4! This time I got the same thing, whole red snapper and it was delicious. I also opted for the parboiled Jollof rice. The rice was perfectly cooked (a bit al dente) and was quite dark in color. It was my first time trying Ghanaian jollof at a restaurant. Much darker than Nigerian jollof with a flavor profile I could not place. It was just as familiar as it was foreign. Being Nigerian, naturally I prefer the Nigerian version so I don't think I'll be getting this again. Personally, I think this meal goes PERFECTLY with tostones - so if you like those (fried smashes green plantain) make some at home or pick some up somewhere else nearby (*cough cough Tortugas!) with your to-go order. That's what I do!

The food was flavorful and the cocktails delicious! The service was friendly and efficient! Plus the steady background of AfroBeats created a lively atmosphere. We tried the jollof, gizzards, efo riro, egusi, tilapia, fried snapper, plantain, suya and more. Fantastic West African food experience for one and all. Go forth, dine in, and enjoy!

My besties dad (Nigerian) had his 70th birthday party at this spot! I arrived on a Saturday evening around 5:00 pm, for a 4:30pm surprise party- don't judge me! I am typically prompt, but had to stop and get a gift! When you walk through the entrance the hostess stand is immediately to your right. There were two young ladies standing there, and appeared a little confused. To help them out, I just pointed t the area where the party was located and said I am here for the event......first impression- ok??! After being in the resturant for about 15-20 min a wait staff finally appeared in the section we were seated. A few people placed orders. There was never really a Formal introduction of the wait staff, or an indication that it was time to place orders. As such, several people did not place their orders until after another 15-20 min had passed. Now this is the kicker, the food that was ordered during the second set of orders came out first!!! HOOOWWWW is that possible? Admittedly I am unfamiliar with African cuisine. I asked my bestie how to pronounce the name of a few Dishes and she had no clue. We decided to ask her dad, he too had never heard of the dishes.however, my bestie suggested the jollof rice with chicken. This is a spiced rice, served with plantains and a tomato based chicken. Collectively this dish was a win. The rice is a bit spicy, but when you eat it with the plantains it has a calming effect. My bestie shared with me that fufu is a popular African dish. Several of the patron of the party did indulge in this. It was a delight to witness the tradition of eating with your hands. Apparently two bowls of water are placed in front of you for washing your hands before and after eating. If I am in the area again it's highly likely that I will order some jollof to go. My rating is a result of the service, or lack there of. I say it time and time again, having a good product is not enough!

First time visiting Cafe Songhai did not disappoint. Our host/server Sapphire was pleasant from the time we walked in. She was well-versed in the food and drink menu. I ordered Efo Riro (one of her recommendations) with Red Snapper & Rice. I'm talking packed with flavor... kudos to the chef! I plan on returning on a Friday night when they have live music. Lastly... Sea Salted Caramel Buttercake with ice cream.Sapphire thanks for everything! You will be missed.

The service was exceptional and the food was ok. My only complaint is that when the waitress brought the check, she announced out loud everything we ordered and total of the check . I don't like that. I'm discrete and I realize they don't print tickets to save paper but as a visual person I have to look at my receipt. It's a horrible idea to announce what someone is spending.

I ordered Jollof rice & goat. This is my first time eating African food and it was amazing!! The service was great as well.

Jollof Rice w/ Sweet Plantains and salad

Came in around 8pm so it wasn't as busy, was seated in no time. Me and my wife chose a good night to come because they had a live band playing Afro-Jazz and they sounded amazing! We browsed the menu and ended up deciding to share some Jollof Rice with Fish, sweet plantains, and salad and it was pretty decent ! The rice was Super flavorful and the fish had a slight crunch to it, which took it over the top. Only downside to the dish is that the portion size for the fish and salad was smaller then I expected it to be. But with all that aside, I would definitely recommend checking out this spot on your own.

Horrible!! This is the second time I've come and gotten old tasting food! The first time I let it go but this time I called and asked to speak to the manager and couldn't get a hold of them! EVEN though I heard them talking to the lady who took my call in the background! Highly disappointing! I've spent a ton of money eating here and recommend several people here but not anymore! This place is already ridiculously high but when my dad is in Ghana and I'm craving some home cooked meals I take the 40 minute drive here because it WAS once worth it! My peanut butter soup was a deep dark brown and not that silky Carmel color I'm accustomed to that leaves an aroma of good eats! It smelled old! It instantaneously made me sick after a few bites! Most of my lamb was hard as rock and clearly old and overcooked! The lamb also had a TON of bones also! The only star is the bean stew which was great but is also is the cheapest (go figure)!! I'm so disappointed! And to not even have the courtesy of the managers concern when I complain or a give me a call back (yes I left my number) is more than enough sign needed to search elsewhere!! Good luck patrons and you've been warned!

Cafe Songhai absolutely brought the flavors! We had the Egusi with roasted chicken served with Fufu, which was great. But also harms the Palm Nut Soup with stewed goat, one of the best we've had this year...really good! Great spot for west African food.

Peanut soup (comes with fufu) Curry goat with rice and peas and plantains.

Curry goat with rice and peas and plantains. Peanut soup (with 2 balls of fufu). Recommended from a friend afar. It looked so delicious. I had to search locally to find a restaurant that had this delectable dish. I was not disappointed. Absolutely wonderful. Excuse the background. I was ready to dive in after that 1 hour drive back.

The pounded yam was smooth and not too thick. I had fun scooping up the Egusi in the Fufu with my hands. Both together was an enjoyable flavor and texture combo. The Beef Suya was good as well, a nice meat appetizer. The beef was cooked well done which some people may not like, but I enjoyed it since I grew up eating my steak that way. It paired very well with the spice blend and raw onions. I also had the Ghanaian Jollof Rice and that was not my most favorite dish due to the flavor. Not my cup of tea, but the rice was cooked well. I also liked the side plantains. The interior is nicely ornate and comfy. The service here was also super great and my assigned server was very personable. I genuinely enjoyed my conversation with her and she did well giving me recommendations and directions as a first timer for this type of food. Setting / Service: We had came in about 10-15 minutes after they had just opened, so it felt like we were the first customers by the way the wait staff was missing. The host had told us sit at any table and we would have a staff member come swing by. We waited about 5-10 minutes before our waitress had came by and asked us if we were ready to order. Mind you - we were not given a food menu or told about the QR code that looked like it was barely hanging on the table beforehand. Food order took a little longer than expected. Table that was sat after us got their full lunch order before our soup came out. Felt little weird about that. The occasional check-ins from the waitress was welcomed. Food: Hunter's Platter was a overcooked or charred. The beef was well done at minimum. Some of the other meat pieces that contained bone were so overcooked that it was tougher than jerky and the bones themselves began to break off into sharp ends / mistaken as meat due to how brittle they became. For it to be priced at 'Market Value' and not have a actual charge was a bit odd to me. It came out to be near $60 for those wondering. Sweet potato soup with plantain fufu was good. We had ordered the mixed meat version, but it only contain one piece of each meat. It was borderline room temp by the time it got to our table. We had also ordered a few other items that were pretty enjoyable. Pleasant additions to a couple first timers who wanted to taste the menu. Overall: I'd say that the experience here was pretty okay to the point we had gotten the meal tab. It was a bit peculiar that our waitress had dropped off the credit card machine to the table for us after handing her my card. It was then I noticed on the machine "Additional Tip". Puzzled, I looked back at the check and noticed she had applied auto-gratuity. Yes, I would have given a tip. I would have given more than the auto applied tip, but it was context that made the entire situation foul. She applied auto tip, dropped the machine off, and just 'disappeared' until we left the table at which she muttered words as she walked past us while looking down to the floor.

I later found out his drink was not an actual beer, but some kind of mixture of alcohol flavored with African herbs and fruits. We took a small taste of each other's drinks. Mine tasted like a standard lager, really. We reviewed the menu and I described what I had a taste for. My friend suggested that I get the Jollof Rice with Chicken, and that's what I ordered. He ordered the Pounded Yam with Egusi soup. My food came out quickly. My friend's order took longer than expected, but he told me to go ahead and start eating, so I did not wait. The food was very good, well seasoned, and had a nice spice kick. My friend's dish came out about 15 minutes later. It must have been a specialty item since it took so long. Once it arrived, he enjoyed it, even though I think he had ordered it before. The restaurant was a little empty, with just a few other patrons inside. While we enjoyed lunch, we listened to some good, authentic Afrobeats music in the background. I even Shazamed a couple of songs while we were sitting there. They also had an area set up with an Instagramable photo wall and a DJ booth. The restaurant itself was very clean and they also had a full bar. Piri-piri chicken, garlic bread, and zero self-control. Nando's is already one of our go-to spots, so it didn't take much convincing. A bold man with a questionable spice tolerance, but I respect the commitment. I ordered the chicken thigh skewers, medium, because I like to feel something without seeing my life flash before my eyes. Now let's talk about the real star of the show: the garlic bread. I don't know what they put in it, but I would trust it with my financial decisions. It's that good. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and exactly what we needed even though we didn't know we needed it. We met up with my sister and her kids, who ordered after us, but honestly the best part of the night was just hanging out, talking, and letting the table slowly turn into a graveyard of sauce-covered plates and crumbs.
