I don't know why this restaurant only has 3 stars.... I think it deserves better. The doro wat and kik alica I had for lunch on 10/7/25 was really good, as was the injara. My coke was ice cold and in a bottle. Prices seemed very fair, and the menu was impressively large. The decor spoke of pride and celebration of place. The service was gracious --- eating Ethiopian food for over 40 years and at my advanced age.... I bashfully ask for a fork these days and the wait staff was kind. The host seemed sincerely pleased to welcome me into the restaurant and to a booth. I will definitely keep this place in my Ethiopian restaurant rotation. My friends and I was amazing with how beautiful the place is, super traditionally decorated. It reminded me of restaurant back home. The food was really good. This was my very first time eating Ethiopian food and I think it's now fair to say that I'm not a huge fan. Now if you LOVE Ethiopian food in general this review may not be as helpful. Summary = If I were to visit again, it would definitely be for the environmental experience and not so much the food. FOOD: To me (and my dad), everything was either spicy, sour or an "interesting" combination of them both. We ordered both the Veggie combo and a chicken dish. I enjoyed bits and pieces of the veggie combo but the chicken dish (whose name currently escapes me) was ENTIRELY too spicy to truly enjoy. The Ethiopian bread itself is another interesting texture that resembles a spongy pancake. I enjoyed the soft, spongy texture of it but found myself wishing it was sweet instead of having a flavor similar to sourdough bread. ATMOSPHERE: Wow such a beautiful restaurant! So much to catch the eye and at a certain time during the night (~10pm?) they turn down the lights and start some live entertainment which is just so enjoyable! I loved the music and the lights and just the overall culturally relevant atmosphere. We were very excited to try this place that was highly recommended by our Ethiopian friend that we think the world of. I was VERY disappointed with the staff. They were very rude and took 50 minutes just to get the appetizer which was sambussa which was quickly tossed on the table without giving me the opportunity to ask for the green dipping sauce. I had to flag down a worker to ask for it and he rudely said it does not come with it. Say WHA? I clearly saw on Yelp pics that it does. And if it it traditionally does not come with it, provide it. I WILL PAY EXTRA for dipping sauce. By the time our mains came (Awaze Tibs and Kilkil) we were just ready to leave. The food was good, the decor cute, but the rudeness of the staff members killed it for us. I would hate to think it was because I am not Ethiopian. Highlight: if you want to feel like you traveled to another country for a brief lunch, then this is the place to go! The decor inside this place was celestial and very ethnic. We ordered the chicken and the Piasso special beef. Every order came with lots and lots of injera (see explanation below). They love playing 90s and 80s romantic instrumentals and have a live band overnight. The stews are good and the meat must be eaten hot to preserve tenderness and juice. I give them a 3.5/5 for this matter bc the food did lose its taste if it got a little cold. Injera- a sourdough crepe served with EVERY dish in an Ethiopian restaurant. It starts out looking like a crepe but then develops a unique porous and slightly spongy texture. The thin batter is poured onto the cooking surface, traditionally a clay plate over a fire though now more commonly a specialized electric injera stove, and the bottom remains smooth while the top develops lots of pores which makes it ideal for scooping up stews and sauces. It is used for EVERYthing including plate, napkin, bread, etc. injera fills you up- so I recommend going slowly or you will feel very heavy later on in the meal despite its light sour taste The chicken we had was a thick heavily dark red spiced oily gravy with 1 chicken drum stick stewed and flavored for hours and a hard boiled egg. It looks like a heavily stewed spice and maybe vegetable base that tastes mildly like chili with a layer of oil on top. Your Injera will hold onto the stews well but the pores can only last so long, so this is a dipping dish. The Piassa Beef was almost like a grilled beef chunks. Must be eaten hot- when it is cold- it becomes mildly stringy and tough to chew and loses its juices and flavors. I recommend wrapping it inside the Injera. It is not too spicy or too salty. It is chargrilled with peppers. They like playing romantic 80s and 90s classical soft rock instrumental in the back, the interior is quite celestial- felt like I entered another world! If you're trying to do an anthro project on Ethiopian culture, this is the place to go for sure- very authentic and very fun for the eyes, palate, and for the company. read more

The server was amazing the first time I went in early March 2020 and Goden Tibs beef prime rib was amazing and fresh. There was even live music The first experience of Piassa was a 5/5 Second time I went was in July of 2020 the Goden Tibs was not as good the meat was mostly fat, and very hard and chewy not soft and fresh. It was old meat that has been in the freezer for months. Since things are slower because of the pandemic I understand why there was a decline in quality. Yes, this place is tucked into a ratchet strip mall that has had better days. You also have to walk through a market and hops you get pointed in the right direction towards the restaurant (walk through a needed curtain on right ). Don't let any of that disuade you, this place is as authentic as it gets. We got the Combo Tibs- these are meats (lamb, goat, steak) gthey were overlooked and tough as others stated. They weren't bad but they are better at other places. The veggie combo- it was pretty good. It had an assortment of salad, lentils, beats, & potatoes all cooked into stews. Everything comes with injiera which is a spongy/doughy wrap in which you put your food in like a taco. FYI- forks are optional , this food is meant to be eaten with your fingers. Overall the prices are cheap and the portions are HUGE . We got 2 plates for 3 people and still took 3 to-go boxes. I'll be back but I'll try the fish rather than the tibs and see how it goes. Piassa is an Ethiopian restaurant located in Scottsdale. I originally went here for their Ethiopian New Years event and really enjoyed myself. However on this visit I didn't try their food. On my second visit i went because I was craving Goden Tibs (friend rib tips). The service was lacking, our waitress was barely around to be seen and we had to bother another server on multiple occasions. Our waitress also forgot our order so we only had one entree come out and we sat there waiting another 15-20 mins for our original order to come out. Once we got the food, it was extremely disappointing. The meat was really tough and hard to chew which made the experience that much worse. Apart from that I will give them points for the authentic decor, and Ethiopian history displayed all throughout the restaurant. I would go back again a third time just to give them a fair chance but based on my experience the second time, I would give them two and a half stars. read more

My friend order so phyllo beef wrapped but it was burnt and over-cooked in the dryer where we just about broke our teeth biting into it. I got the beef soup and it was a very thin broth and very little beef and it was very veiny. Entree: we got the big platter. And I was very disappointed BC I was expecting a veggie and meat combo...and it was about 75% raw. Now I am a fan of the KITFO, which is the typical steak tatare served rare. But it was really rare and it didn't taste fresh. Then...there chunks of raw meat on the dish and it wasn't the best quality of meat as it was very veiny. My friend freaked out and I kept apologizing that it's typically not like this. But we ate about 30% of it and took the rest of home. Had dinner here yesterday. When you first enter it seems to be a food and meat mart go through the curtain on the right and you walk right into an eclecticly decorated dining room with many Ethiopian pieces of art and an overall mixed yet quirky decor. My friends and I ordered a variety of dishes the first being fish gulash, the veggie combo and lastly Derek tibs. The fish gulash is made up of tilapia fish cubes sauteed with onions and tomatoes and cooked in a mild chili and spice blend called berbere and finally topped with some jalapeño peppers. The gulash was good it had a burnt taste at times and some what of a fishy taste. But an OK dish nonetheless. The veggie combo was comprised of a variety of vegetarian Ethiopian dishes like shiro (chick pea sauce ), dinich wot (potato stew), gomen (collard greens), key sir (beets), misir (lentils) and a salad. Warning it is a huge platter and can be shared with 2 if not 3 people. It was just average in comparison to home made Ethiopian food or other restaurants versions like Desta. The last dish was Derek tibs which is cyber beef cooked with onions and spices served on a sizzling small platter. The presentation was great but I wish they had taken it away after serving cause the meat continued to cook and the smell just permeated through everything. My friends enjoyed it though and doubled up on hot spice mitmita which made it taste even better. Overall a good experience. read more

A hidden treat unearthed thanks to Scoutmob and Yelp...I'd probably never find this place otherwise as it's tucked into an unassuming strip mall. When we first walked into Piassa (you have to enter through the mart), I was a touch skeptical since a heavy cloud of incense permeated the place, and strong smells aren't okay in my book. However, I decided to give Piassa a chance, and luckily for me, the intense incense subsided. The waitresses were just so warm and friendly. From my seat in our booth, I could read the words "Feel Like Home" above the private table. Very homey indeed. Like it's been mentioned, the menu doesn't have any appetizers listed and basically is just mains and drinks. We ended up ordering three entrees which was too much for two people, but or does it mean that the portions are just that big? Hmm, something to ponder. We ended up sharing the veggie combo, yebeg tibs (lamb), and kitfo normal which they kindly cooked completely for us. The veggies reminded me of a clock, as there were practically twelve treats to try, laid out on a huge circle of injera. Everything was delicious. Lamb was a tad dry but the taste made up for that. And they kept the injera coming as needed. You can tell that the restaurant and adjoining mart cater to an Ethiopian clientele. In the mart, the spices and lentils were not labeled, and the butcher sign had nary a word of English. It's not too far from the Dekalb Farmers Market, so you could swing by Piassa either before of after your food shopping needs. read more

They are so slow executing food. Be prepared to wait and wait and wait. Once you get past the somewhat cryptic menu the food is great. Don't expect a simple division of appetizers, soups, etc. The menu does not seem to follow any sort of organization at all... maybe by sauce, but even then, not quite. They don't have some of the specialties we have come to expect at some other area Ethiopian eateries - Sambusas and Lentil soup, for example. We forged forward and ordered the "Biret Metad Tibs" and the Veggie Combo." The Tibs were mildly spiced and very nicely presented with a side salad. The Veggies were a real surprise though with a sampling of about 8 or 10 different veggies encircling a salad on a big piece of njira (that's the Ethiopian bread everything is eaten with). Since the menu described the Veggie Combo as containing just 3 veggies, we were very happily surprised to see such a wide assortment. Most were excellent, all were good, none were very spicy, which I missed. But, they did provide a little dish of hot sauce on the side which was wonderfully flavorful and allowed us to spice up the food to our taste. Overall we enjoyed eating here and I think we would come again. With the addition of some appetizers and a more user friendly menu, they could earn 5 stars. read more

On a cross country road trip, I found this thrift store on Highway 85 that boasts every American paraphernalia known to man. Entering Piassa was a similar experience: it's a shrine for Ethiopia (hoarding all manner of artifacts and galleries) under the guise of a restaurant. I had to start with this prelude as many reviewers mentioned that this was "authentic Ethiopian decor" it is not. It's a closterphobic mess. The only thing true to the restaurants in Ethiopia is the adjacent butcher shop & the speakeasy setup. The menu is not American friendly, like the decor, outdated and confusing. I hate seeing my ppl ruin their business endeavors like this. I'd recommend if you're an Ethiopian novice to ask your server for guidance - well actually demand assistance since they move at a glacial pace. I have ordered their veggie platter and meat dishes incl tibs, kitfo. The meat is very good! Clearly it's fresh as the butcher shop is in the same vicinity. I'm no fan of their veggie platter, it's too mushy. Kik, misir and dinich all baby food soft. Overall, the pack rat atmosphere is grounds for no return. As an Ethiopian, I'm embarrassed. I recently got a combo tibs platter of lamb and beef for takeout thought I was very tempted to enjoy their lush dining interior. The tibs were a generous portion, wonderfully moist and tender with a touch of spice. I usually take leftovers the next day and fry everything up with some eggs. They always have a good supply of home-crafted Tej to wash it all down.
