I visited Cafe Petra Express for the first time for takeout. It was late and near closing, but the two gentlemen who served me were friendly and knowledgeable. The restaurant is part of a chain with only 8 locations. The restaurant is small, clean and very convenient to doctor's offices and Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and Baton Rouge General Hospital on Bluebonnet. There is ample outdoor seating when the weather permits. I got the chicken Shawarma and gyro salad and rice combination plate without the hummus. The gyro was equal to other Greek and Lebanese eateries, but I have had better seasoned chicken Shawarma locally, nonetheless both meats were hot and tender and along with the salad made great pita sandwiches. The rice was insipid. The menu featured other speciality items and desserts; which I look forward to trying in the future, especially for dining-in. Stopped by on a Monday afternoon for a quick lunch and Cafe Petra hit the spot! It was empty when we got there around 1:30pm. I ordered a gyro sandwich (it's a wrap), which comes with hummus, feta salad, pita bread and tzatziki as sides. The food was ready lightning fast. Everything tasted good. I do think they went a bit overboard with the raw purple onions in the wrap though. The to-go containers are plastic can be easily reused. There's also a drive-thru ordering option. Such a delight--more than your basic "Greek food" restaurant! Although they do have basic fare as well. We went on a non-busy Sunday night craving something filling but nutritious. The man who took our order was very nice and explained any items we asked about. We ordered the chicken Petra which I HIGHLY recommend. Cooked to order deliciously marinated chicken and a large amount of mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions sautéed in a mildly tomato, but mostly just very flavorful herbal sauce. Like a delicious Lebanese fajita? The side salad was topped with Tzatziki which was a refreshing favorite. They didn't overload everything with stinky feta which is usually my main complaint at Mediterranean restaurants. Our family had just arrived to Baton Rouge for thanksgiving and had no food at our hotel. We were desperate and about to pull into a gas station as almost everywhere was closed for the holiday. We stopped here seeing it was one of the few places open, but weren't expecting the food to be anything special. We were very pleasantly surprised. Most of us ordered the chicken shawarma on the recommendation of the cashier, which was solid. One person ordered the lamb gyro which was tasty as well. The spinach pie / spanakopita was perhaps our favorite: flaky, with creamy filling - very hearty and delicious. Had to order more to go! Service was kind and very attentive despite the to-go food environment. Staff made sure to check on us, bringing refills and sauce (the garlic spread was very yummy). We also ordered baclava on the way out, which the owner graciously gave to us on the house. Everyone in our group was very happy and full by the end of our meal and are even trying to plan another visit before we leave in a couple days. read more

Apparently I'm in the minority. It wasn't bad, but I wasn't wowed. I'm pretty sure the eggplant moussaka in my veggie plate was microwaved, meaning not cooked fresh, although in all fairness I suspect this happens at a lot of like places. The hummus was ok, as was the feta salad, falafel, and dolmas (grape leaves). It did not seem like a lot of food for the price. The service was pretty good, but it was not busy and the employees sort of seemed bored. The restaurant itself is really small and cute. Would I go back? Possibly, but not likely anytime soon given the competition. My daughter seemed pleased with her food, which is always a plus. Noticed it was new and ordered via Waitr. 1) the baklava is SO good. I had to fight my husband to get the last bite. 2) Veggie platter: came with a good amount of food. I ordered the eggplant moussaka, okra moussaka, fattoush salad, falafel, and grape leaves. The okra moussaka could've been it's own meal, came in its own container. I do wish baba ghanoush was an option to choose from, you can add it separately but I didn't do that. Does not come with its own pita. 3) my husband tried both the lamb shank and the chicken schwarma sandwich. I agreed with him that both meats were a bit bland for us. As an Albasha fan girl, this is really hard for me to say, but since I've been twice to Cafe Petra, I feel as though I can say it confidently. Their chicken shwarma MIGHT be as good if not better than Albasha. I can't believe I'm saying it, but the flavor of this shwarma is another level of good and I really enjoy it. Their gyro is good as well, still good flavor, but I think Albasha still has a slight edge there. I like Petra! I've been here twice--once for dine in and once for take out via door dash. The chicken schwarma is juicy and well seasoned. The gyro is fine, did not particularly stand out to me. Their hummus is really smooth and so yum. The customer service here is really nice and quick ish. The only reason I took off a star is because this place is pricey! Not sure how updating a review works since it doesn't show my original. First time I got two combo plates; one with fries instead of rice and the other with spanakopita instead of rice. The meats were the best we've had in the area. Updating to include my experience with the lamb shank. It came in a foil packet, like a mini pot roast. It was super tender and had good flavor. Night get it again, but will likely stick to the combo plate for most of my orders. I also purchased a 1/4lb of chicken for $5.44 after tax. I got it in case the lamb wasn't good and because my dog really likes it, too. Apparently a whole pound is around $15, so it's good that it's not $5.44*4. read more

It's all GREEK to me!!! This new Greek and Lebanese place that just opened is really good. It's not like the normal chain around town (not going to name names) Cafe Petra Express is a great place to get lunch on the go as they have a drive-thur & you can also order online. Service was great and the guy behind the register was very friendly and helped out with any questions we had. I ordered the gyro plate and it was enough to feed 2 people - The meat was tender not crispy or burnt. I've been seeing advertisements on Facebook and at another eating establishment we frequent and we love Greek and Lebanese food. It's super clean. The decor is modern. The staff is super nice. But it's the food, that's what we came for. It was wonderful! I had Kafka and Julie had chicken Shawarma. They bring it to you in divided little trays, dishwasher and microwave safe it says. Portions are nice sized. The rice is cover with olive oil and has some peas and carrots in it. My Kafka was spot on. Down home. Spiced just right. The baba ghounash had a layer of water on top so I'm assuming it have been thawed in the fridge. Hummus was missing something... maybe lemon or tahini. Both the hummus and the baba ghounash was soupy than creamy. I finished everything, that's how small it was. Surprisingly with portion they gave, it was filling but for the price of $14.95 I should have something to bring home. After 2 hours, the food didn't sit well in my stomach. The service was great. Especially the nice lady working the counter. The food on the other hand... I ordered Chicken Shawarma. The Petra Bites. The garlic was great but sadly the shawarma was way too salty. At first I thought it was because it was on top of a bed of fries but after brushing off the salt on the bottom of the shawarma it was still way too salty. I'm not sure what happened but it ruined the meal. I hope others don't encounter this problem and that the restaurant fixes this. Been eating horrible during hurricane ida evacuation and just wanted something quick but better than fries. The only perk was they have a drive thru option. Tried to use the rest room inside and it was covered in pee and I had to clean it with my two children in there. The food however was okay and the portions are pretty small for the price compared to other places. The gyro, hummus, and salad was delicious. My family was driving through on a road trip and we were looking for something fast, but we didnt want "fast food". This place was great! It has a drive though, but we dined in on the patio. It seemed a bit expensive at first, but when our food came, we saw that the portions were huge and the quality was great. Our kids each had the penne pasta with alfredo (one with chicken and one with shrimp). The sauce was very herby and flavorful, the shrimp were large and juicy and the chicken was a huge mound of shwarma. My 9 YO boys could have easily shared one dish and they are not light eaters. My husband and I both had the chicken shwarma sandwich and they were also quite large. They were stuffed full of well seasoned meat, fresh veggies and tzaziki. A fresh salad and hummus on the side again made this a meal with leftovers. The owner came out several time to check on us, answer any questions we had and he even refilled our drinks for us. Great service and personable employees. So, while this restaurant came up in my yelp search for fast food and they were definitely fast, I would classify it as casual, order at the counter dining with great people and a welcoming experience.
